Great spot for tortillas, barbacoa, tamales, & menudo. The place is straight forward. Walk in, look at menu, they sling it over to you and you're out in less than 5 minutes. Let's start off with the highlight barbacoa was very good true all meat was maybe just a lil dry and that's why won't get 10/10 but it was a strong 9/10 then the menudo smelled amazing very good ratio of meat and hominy also plenty of meat but lacked just a lil bit of flavor nothing a few pinches of salt and limón and some salsa couldn't change 8/10 after mixed 7/10 before adding anything the salsa was good as well to add flavor nothing spicy at all just a lil watery tho no worries still good but the tamales is where the let down happend 3/10 super dry not a lot of flavor but good ratio of meat to masa so I'd give a 4/10 will be back for barbacoa for sure not sure about the others read more

I wanted to try a new barbacoa spot, so I stopped by Papi's this morning. I ordered the all meat barbacoa with salsa and corn tortillas. Barbacoa (3/5) The barbacoa here was a bit more dry than ones I have had in the past (Rio's, a few places in Laredo). The flavor was still solid and what I expect from good barbacoa, but it was noticeably less tender. Salsa and corn tortilla (2/5) The salsa was a bit too watery for me, and the corn tortillas were paper thin. The tortillas tasted like ones I would get from the store compared to corn tortillas I've had at other establishments (including taco joints). They still got the job done, but I've had better. Pricewise, the above costs about $18 after tax. I would personally stick to rios barbacoa for your barbacoa fix or try a different spot. It's possible maybe I came at too late a time or should have ordered menudo or tamales instead. However, even if it was as good as barbacoa places I've been to in the past, being a few dollars pricier for the same thing makes it not really worth it in my opinion. read more

I found this place through Yelp and wanted to give it a shot for the positive reviews it received. When I got there it was 8:30 AM on a Sunday and I did not expect a line out the door. There are only two people working so why it took a bit longer. Service was awesome! The owner was very welcoming and so delightful. I ordered the lengua and all meat barbacoa and I must say it was worth the wait!!! The lengua did not have an after taste and it was tender. The barbacoa wasn't greasy and on point! First time trying papis barbacoa. The barbacoa was perfect, just meat. My taco wasn't dripping out grease. I used to go here all the time when it was Arturo's. This was my first barbacoa I tried when I move to SA in 1998, and it was delicious! Guess what, it's almost even better now under new ownership! I got the all meat, which is seriously finely shredded, little fat, and amazing! Best. Barbacoa. My husband HATES when there's fat in the barbacoa. We found this gem and you can order regular barbacoa or the "all meat" one. The all meat one meets my picky eater's needs. It's the cheapest by the pound that I have found in San Antonio, also. The corn tortillas are awesome too, and at $1.65, I usually buy 2 packages so I can have at home for the week. The owner is always super nice and sweet and you can tell he is proud of what he makes, and he appreciates his customers. I've been buying barbacoa from Papi's for a very long time and shamefully never reviewed it until now. The owner greets us at every visit with a "How are you, my Friend?!" attitude. The barbacoa is clean. And by that I mean that it's not filled with grease as it's served to you, and, it doesn't taste like they saved it from last week and serving it to you today. You can feed your family breakfast for less than $20 if you get the Spurs Special. Other ala carte items are fresh corn or flour tortillas, avocados, charro beans, menudo, tamales, red and green salsa. There are at least ten varieties of sodas to choose from. Please note: I'm only reviewing the barbacoa because their other items contain pork, which I don't eat. Buying from Papi's is a great way to support local business. And bonus: all kids get a sample of barbacoa as soon as they walk in the door. read more

Tried Papi's for the first time on the recommendation of a friend. He had good reviews but nothing that stood out. I went there as soon as they opened, 0630, and purchased the Spur Special All Meat selection, a packet of flour tortillas and another pound of All Meat. The rice was higher than I expected compared to my usual establishment CMM. But not one to give judgement without trying, I paid the higher price, over $35. I found the All Meat to have much more grease than CMM. I do expect some grease but this was to the point when I pressed it with a fork, I would get excessive drainage. All in all, I was disappointed with my first visit but I will give them two more visits before making a final decision on further patronage. For the time being, I will continue to go down CULEBRA for a few blocks more and get my usual All MEAT Special at that particular MARKET. Strike One. read more

Hands down the BEST Barbacoa in San Antonio! I love their specials. Food taste so good. Corn tortillas are so soft! Tamales are on point! Not like some that have more masa & less meat! I'm sorry I didn't take a pic of the Barbacoa but it is NOT greasy at all!! When it says ALL meat, that's what you get!! The staff is friendly. This place use to be Arturo's Barbacoa. The former owner had a friendly staff & always took care of his customers. I'm feeling like this new owner is also taking care of his customers. I've never been disappointed!! I went this morning get the special and I tell the owner may I have tamales he said ok not ready but okay so as he was getting my food I ask may I have flour tortillas instead of corn he looks at says well you asked for the special I said I understand but I will pay for the difference he said well say that so I let that go then I said may I menudo no not ready til 8 am just like tamales. I said okay but yet sells me tamales cold and I think he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed . I've been to Papi's a handful of times to satisfy barbacoa/menudo cravings. On the owner's recommendation I got the all meat barbacoa and he did not steer me wrong - not overly greasy but incredibly tender and moist and flavorful. I also really like their menudo. I'm very picky but theirs has an awesome spice level that seems hard to find in San Antonio and they are incredibly generous with the meat and hominy. I do wish they made it with a pata so I could ask for it but that doesn't affect my enjoyment one bit. Their combos are a great deal if you're feeding a group or don't have all the fixings but I also love to get the soup and meat à la carte and dress it up just the way I like it at home.
