I've been on the hunt in San Antonio for the best Tortas Ahogadas, and darn it if this place isn't right up there with the more famous Ro-Ho's. At first glance, El Chivito doesn't look like anything more than a divey drive-thru only place. But park around the back and walk up, and you'll find a covered seating area that has around 9-10 tables. The floor's asphalt and still has the parking lot arrows on it, as if the place grew organically into the lot, but it's homey and comfortable enough to enjoy the setting. Service was fast and friendly, and I got both the Tortas Ahogadas and their famous Birria taco. Oh, wow...the birria here is bursting with flavor, I'd come back just for this. However, the star for me is the torta...great bread, delicious roast pork, and whatever they're making the red sauce from, it's divine. Definitely worth your time to visit this place, it's a hidden gem! This place scores a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. The birria is the best in the city, the torta ahogada was the best i have ever had. And the empanadas are super badass! This place wont break the bank either. Chivitos has been the OG for me since moving to San Antonio -- we come here at least once a month and have never been disappointed!! The jamón y queso empanadas are my favorite. Simple, but super yummy and great when you're on the go! I've stopped by to grab these on a lunch break and they're ready within 5 minutes. The tacos sauve are my fav... I always get the carnitas but have tried others and haven't been able to find flavor like that anywhere else. The birria is one of the show stoppers though. Let me start by saying this first. If you want spicy ask for the red salsa first. They keep that one in the back. Lol This place was a spot we stopped at because my oldest wanted some Birria tacos and my normal spot was closed. He and I both got the Birria tacos and they are good. Needed a little salt and salsa on both the tacos and consume but other than that they are good. My wife got the tacos with carnitas and potatoes and those are really good. The tacos have a nice crunch and the flavors are all there in ever bite. Didn't really care to much for the agua ti pineapple because it had a lot of pulp but it was fresh made and not powder so that's a plus. I would go back to try it again and try new things on the menu. The ambiance is very chill and relaxed and the seating has about 7 tables. The service was great and very attentive. The quesabirria was delicious. They even included some onions and cilantro on side as well as some tasty sauces. I personally thought the consome was bland and lacking in the flavor department. The mango aguas frescas was tasty and refreshing for the hot day, also the cup was HUGE. We pulled up to a small hut-looking building and were immediately hit with the aroma of deliciousness! We ordered at the window and our food was brought to us. Yes! Yes! Several times yes! THE BEST TACOS IVE EVER had in my life and the best in San Antonio (I've tried 3 different place and this one slaps on my mama!) I pulled up to this small little hut with outside seating area. I read on yelped that they have really good birria (and you know how the internet has been hyping up those) so I had to try them. The cashier was a knowledgeable and helpful young man (had glasses). He helped me order the birria, which is sold individually, and the buché taco with corn in a cup and I mixed the pineapple and mango agua freshca. As I waited for my food, a waitress came out and disinfected the picnic table that patrons just left! (Which mean they're clean and taking this Covid deal serious! Good!) So I brought my food back to my hotel and realized I forgot the consumé (I thought it came with it but it's sold separately. This cashier tried to explain that but I misunderstood) Ok to the part you've been waiting for, the food!!! I took one bite of my birria taco and said wow. Literally I stopped chewing and said WOW!!! This taco was bomb even without the consumé to dip it in. I devoured these tacos and they came with an abundance of cilantro, onions, and limes as well as a verde sauce (it had a kick too it and I'm not a fan of spicy but it had flavor too so if you like spicy you'll like it but I am a whimp) And this buché taco was delicious! They even took the time to explain what it was and showed me the meat before making the taco. It was so delicate and flavorful. The pineapple mango water was also very refreshing. I love this place so much I went back the next day because I wanted that experience again AND because I didn't get take photos before eating it. Wanted birria tacos. Searched it up on Yelp and saw good reviews for this place. Decided to give it a try. We went through the drive-thru and ordered the birria tacos and the quesabirria. While waiting in line, a lady came up to us and tried to sell us some handmade lucas candy. Got our order, parked in the parking lot. Food was pipping hot which means its fresh and not reheated so many times for the bacteria to dissipate right? The birria tacos were good in my opinion, the quesabirria tasted the same but with lots of cheese on top and it came with a cup of consome for you to dip it in. Got full and had leftovers which I was happy about because I can eat it later. Not 30 minutes has passed and my stomach is feeling very bloated and making noises. I had to use the bathroom asap. We ate this around noon and had to cancel our plans for the day. Basically I had a stomachache that wasn't going away. I was sad I had to throw away the leftovers. Visited this place for lunch and I have to say this is pretty authentic food and has an overall good flavor. The person taking the order is warm and friendly and made me feel welcomed. I asked for recommendations and she said the quesibirria tacos and the tortas. So I tried both. They both had good overall flavor and both the torta ans the tacos were a good size. The agua de Limón was also good and had good homemade flavor. Reason for the 4 stars was that the flavor was good but at times overwhelming with too much seasoning. Wanted to try something new. The entrance is not obvious, luckily an employee saw us and showed is the entrance. It's between the food truck and the building. Inside go to the ordering window, order your food, give a name and then find a seat! The lemonade was really good! We tried the mini tacos with asada meat, soft taco with carnitas (? Not too sure as the hubby asked for carnitas but the person suggested buche and he said okay sure), and the birria torta ahogada. We liked the mini tacos more than the soft tacos because the asado was more flavorful. Both were still tasty. We liked that the torta came with the tomato sauce on the side. It's good for people like hubby who didn't want any sauce on his sandwich. Got the birria empanada for our kiddo so don't know if it's good. Hubby was tempted to eat it though. read more

Shameful that I haven't left a review since I've eaten here and brought people here so many times. It's close to Black Friday deals which resells returned items from Amazon. The three things that I keep going back for are: the ahogada (aka drowned sandwich), birria tacos, birria ramen. Ideally, I'd go with someone and split the sandwich and the ramen and get a taco on my own. I'd dip the taco in the ramen instead of ordering the consume. The sandwich is crazy the bread has a crunch that rattles your brain; even when drenched in the tomato broth! The tacos I already talked about it's a religious experience that makes you see biblically accurate angels with so many eyes and time warping voices. The ramen... is just crazy ... just imagine the most beautiful person from São Paulo, part Japanese part Latinx sophisticated and professional but still fit and bronzed like they go to the beach every day. That is what this soup is like. It's gorgeous, it's mellow, it's spicy and just when you question if you can handle anymore it slaps you. Such a fantastic time! If you slurp your noodles then let them slide over a fork or through your chopsticks. You don't want a wild noodle smackin' your eyeball with this broth. This place is easily one of the best spots for Mexican food in SA. Before I get to the food, the service was amazing. The lady's name was Diana, and she took care of us and made sure we had everything we needed. Even though it was pretty busy we got our food really fast. My wife and I ordered 2 Tortas Ahogadas de Carnitas (Pork), 2 Quesabirria w/consome, 1 taco dorado and corn in the cup. The torta ahogada was amazing and the salsa they give you to pour all over it is very spicy!! Thankfully they put it on the side and not all over it like some other places do. The Birria was very tender and the consome to dip the Quesabirria in was sooo good. My wife really enjoyed her taco dorado and the corn in the cup was so good we might just go back for that. We ordered an agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus) and agua de mango which both were very refreshing. Parking lot is kinda small and so is the restaurant and it's outside seating only but it's covered with fans blowing when it's hot but they do have a drive thru.
