Went here on Saturday (9/30) in the late afternoon. Sat down at the bar and hung out with the best bartender in Austin, Kaitlyn. She rocks and made our day. Love ya girl!! Drinks - We had a bunch of drinks; including Bulleit whiskey, the classic (really good), and some homemade drinks by Kaitlyn. Many of the drinks are locally grown and infused at this bar, so try their recommendations. You will not be disappointed. Food - Started off with a dozen oysters. These were small in size, but big in taste. Great horseradish to go along with them. Stuffed pretzel was gouda-licious, but I wonder how they made those perfect gouda squares that melt into the pretzel. The one thing I did miss ordering was the burger. Maybe next time Service/Atmosphere - Much different place than the rest of 6th street. Service was awesome and they took care of us. The bar area was a little more relaxed than the back dining area, but we were there for fun and not sitting at a table. Perfect ambiance for a date night or to get away from the hustle of outside. I've been to Parkside several times and have always had a good experience, but this time around, I was not impressed. I brought a group from out of town to Parkside, and by the end of the dinner, I wished I had taken them elsewhere. I do have to commend our server for working with a guest with a dietary restrictions, but these things detracted from the experience: - We were not greeted or given water for at least 10 min after we were seated - We ordered a few apps, but did not have small plates to put them on - The crab fritters tasted very "fishy" - We were not given steak knives for our meat dishes - My steak was served cold (I did not order it rare) - We had to ask for water refills several times We were a larger party, so grat was included. If it wasn't, I would have suggested a lower tip. Our bill ended up being over $100/person, and with a price point like that, I would expect a better overall experience. read more

We ordered the grand seafood platter. It came out a dozen oysters, half a dozen shrimp, some "ceviche" and swear to god the lump crab salad was Starkist tuna there darn well was no crab in it. Nothing grand about that platter at all. For entree's I had the steak my wife the chicken. My NY strip steak was three slices of a mediocre steak on a bed of wilted greens with a fairly raw potato thingy next to it. All sitting in a bath of balsamic vinegar. I've always found that a large puddle of balsamic vinegar is a dead give away for when the foods gonna be seriously lacking. My wife's chicken was pretty good. The polenta crisps with it were so salty any flavor was lost. Our waitress was a rock star. I think she had 20+ tables to her self and was running like mad. The manager and the 3 hosts could have helped bail her outa little more, but they did look pretty. Was once a secret gem to eat some amazing food at but wow has it has fallen in service Upon entering got a hostess that slammed a menu in front of us and confirmed our reservation She was not wanting to be their that night and it showed. Taken to the table and told its 70 a person tonight it's a set menu is that ok with attitude. I said probably let my wife look it over. Then I asked if we could not sit right at the bar we had a reservation an there are other seats. Hostess storms off never seen from again. After 10 min got water. So we decided to just leave. Went to Perry's and got amazing bar service since we did not have a reservation at Perry's. First time visiting Austin and this place, and it was awesome! We came during happy hour, and it was sooo worth it. Happy hour had just started, so we did not have to wait long. Everything on the menu is half off during happy hour, including drinks, and we tried a bit of everything. Was not disappointed with anything. These are only a few pics of the foods we ate lol. Hands down my favorite Wednesday happy hour spot in Austin. This place is a little more upscale in terms of ambiance and cost, but their happy hour makes things very affordable. The reason Wednesdays are my favorite is because you can get a dozen (east coast) oysters for $16! Typically you get 3 different types and four of each of those. I also tried the following: -Ceviche: small, good, fresh, light, had a strong lemon flavor -Calamari: I like the seasoning they put on it. It gives it an extra little spice but nothing crazy. I do think the portion size got smaller, probably because it's such a great deal for HH -Burger&fries: I love the fries here! They're savory, salty, and crunchy :) The burger was a huge shocker to me. I got mine medium rare and it was so perfectly juicy and cooked just right. Also, finding street parking on/near 6th street on a Wednesday is not bad at all! read more

My husband and I went for my birthday. I feel so disappointed that I wasted nearly $200 on my birthday for the food we received. Maybe it was because it was a Sunday? I have no idea. It was not good. We started with the calamari which was chewy and rubbery. The dipping sauce had zero flavor. I wanted the crab fritters but they were out, so we went with the bass crudo. It was probably the one thing I somewhat enjoyed, but even so - the avocado was on the hard side. I could see this being delicious another time. Next we ordered the ceasar salad which was definitely the biggest disappointment. The lettuce was poor quality, there was hardly any dressing, and it had no flavor. Our entrees were the steak and the haddock. The polenta with the haddock was good, but I just wasn't impressed with anything else on the plate. It was fine. My husband's steak was definitely rare instead of medium rare. After we asked for our check, they brought out a birthday dessert. It was a nice touch, but honestly not good either. Quality restaurant. Great service and excellent/well portioned food. Their happy hour is one of the best. You get half priced craft cocktails and wonderful food options. Their oysters platter is a must have, the ceviche is divine and surprisingly abundant, charcuterie board could be better, but I'd order it again because of the perfect little scoop of pâté that comes with it. The only dessert I've had is the donut cake and it was very regular, more towards bad, not well balanced in flavors or texture. Too overpowering by bad combinations. Parkside -- you are a marvel to me. You sit squarely in the middle of dirty sixth and radiate class. You've got things like martini mondays and blonde pate, champagne and oysters, bar steak and lump crab fritters. Meanwhile, yet another tortured rendition of Jack and Diane bleeds out of one of the bars down the street catering to $1 long island drinkers. I remember when you first opened. I frankly wasn't optimistic. But here you are, still beautiful and accessible. We were here for a ladies happy hour club and had nothing but perfect service the entire time. All that stuff I mentioned up top arrived perfectly presented and tasty enough that there might have been some side-eye happening over the last couple of bites. It's just a solid place to take friends, a date, an anniversary or a business group. The happy hours are fantastic deals and the dinner, while a little spendy, is consistent - something that isn't always the case in a new shiny object restaurant. One of my favorites for HH is Parkside downtown for the fantastic oysters and martinis. Only from 5-6:30 M-F and bar fills up fast, but 1/2 off bar menu (includes oyster platter) and beer and spirits. Their prices have gone up and they shortened their happy hour, but still one of the best deals in town. Top notch! read more

When I first moved to Austin, this was one of the few places I could find that reminded me of San Francisco with a great Happy Hour To boot! Unfortunately, a lot has changed since then. I came in last Tuesday at 5pm for my birthday. We wanted to enjoy the happy hour and asked for a table. The hostess very rudely told us we could not be seated until the whole party arrived. I tried to explain that people would be coming in and out and gave her a rough estimate of our maximum number. She said we could sit at the bar and wait but if we "had more Than 8 people they would NOT be able to accommodate us." At this point the restaurant was empty minus one table and 2 people at the bar. We also weren't planning to stay long which we told them. I could go on and on. The waitress never once smiled and wasn't helpful or informative at all. She appeared angry everytime we ordered something. The hostesses continued to give us mean looks throughout the evening. The manager, I assume, even walked by at one point and they all stood chatting about us and glaring. We were asked to start at the bar then were seated 5 minutes later and all had to close out our tabs at their request. If you are this unhappy with your job, why not quit? If you're a manager here, why keep employees around that ultimately lose you business? The food also was a letdown. The salmon ceviche used to be my favorite - it has shrunk in size by about half and appeared more like citrusy, chopped up cat food. The bar steak was cooked well but super salty. I was extremely bummed that this place just didn't live up to my continued expectations. All my friends agreed the employees really put a damper on the whole evening and the experience. If I didn't have other people showing up, we would have left immediately based off the attitudes of the two hostesses. We were also overcharged for two drinks. Partly because of how much time has elapsed since the last visit. Partly because I remember my eyes bulging out cartoonishly at the check. Partly because I left hungry. I think most things tasted good. I think I liked 2 of the 3 drinks I tried - good odds, good odds. I think I saw a piece of fish sitting in a "cooler" that wasn't turned on with a sliding door that was ajar as we sat down RIGHT as they opened. And I think it stayed there. I think that they are over priced even if their happy hour is appealing. Bottom line, though, is that I know we spent a damned decent piece of change here and yet the entire visit, aside from good company, was overall unmemorable. And I'm tired of joints boasting about their coastal varieties of oysters yet only offering the same ole concoction of dressings. The staff was a bit snooty, particularly the hostess, who wouldn't seat 6 guests because we were still waiting on two more. Once she said our table was ready and we followed her, we walked right past our table unbeknownst to us and kept following her almost full circle to where we started. She then turned around and pointed back to a table. Really? Apparently, she had made some cryptic hand gesture and/or low-volume grunt in passing that none of us saw or heard. Note to management, when the hostess takes you to your table, they should turn around, smile, make a hand gesture and say 'here's your table'. This is how other high end restaurants make you feel welcome. The place is on 'dirty sixth', it's bit loud inside and out and the food is expensive, with most of us getting small portions. I lucked out as my salmon was delicious with a good size portion of fish accompanied with some 'ancient grains' and a coconut sauce. I had a good 30 minutes to kill downtown and the smallest of appetites. Parkside quickly came to mind. I sat at the bar where Brian was manning the raw bar, preparing beautiful ice dishes filled with oysters. I like oysters but don't know squat about the differences in their tastes based on region, geology of the areas etc, but Brian gave me a brief run down and I selected a few oysters. I had some sweet and some salty: Little Wing ~ sweet Shiny Seas ~ salty Caraquette ~ salty All were wonderful and definitely had their own distinct tastes. I was wooed by the variety of oysters they offer and the impressive knowledge the staff had of their menu. 5 stars due to the impeccable decor, service, and food quality. We loved our server who was very friendly and always checked to make sure we were okay throughout the meal. Found this place on the yelp app only on a recent visit to Austin for ACL weekend. Easily booked a last minute Open Table reservation. Love when things work out like that especially considering we knew a lot of people were in town due to the music festival. This place is in the middle of crazy 6th street and a few minutes walk from our hotel, Hilton Garden Inn. Dishes ordered: Bass - delicious!! good sized portion as well. Very limey for those that might not like that, but I thought it complimented the raw fish well. Roasted corn soup - super good. They poured it into the bowl at the table. Had corn kernels at the bottom of the bowl. Puree'd and super tasty. BF got the steak entree - it was cooked perfectly and was very tender. Mac and cheese side - one of the best mac and cheese's i've eaten. Cheesy but not over the top. Good portion too because i wouldnt want to eat too much of it. Only negative comment was that it was a little loud at times in the main room, but i loved the decor with the candles and plants scattered around the room that I really didnt mind too much. People were laughing and I'm sure they were enjoying the food just as much as we did. Kudos to Parkside. I will recommend for anyone I know going to Austin in the future. read more

Just ordered Parkside through Uber Eats and I have to say, I am really disappointed. I know that they aren't offering their full menu to go during the shutdown, but if they aren't even going to try, they should really just shut the doors. My order was terrible. I ordered the burger and fries, which is $18, but all I received was a tiny burger no bigger than a slider from any normal place like Hopdoddy. I also ordered the mac and cheese, and it looked nothing like in the pictures. No breadcrumbs, no garnish. It was just a tasteless, pile of goopy mac and cheese. Here it was...The moment we'd been waiting for all year. My brother was married, I had a new sister-in-law, our lives were forever changed...and now we were ready for the wedding reception. Finally, all the months of planning and shopping and calling and waiting were coming together, and oh thank God--there's an open bar. After a pleasant afternoon of wedding photos taken on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol, Mom and I popped into Parkside early with Neal's godfather and family friend, Gary, to oversee the last details of the reception setup, while conveniently indulging my control freak tendencies. Upon arriving, we headed to our space that included Parkside's entire 2nd floor: a 1000 square foot banquet room, private bar, and rooftop patio overlooking 6th street. Everything was neatly appointed and set up by the event planner, Allison, and the layout was just perfect. We also discovered Lisa had a small army of friends already on most of the last minute details including sound and tying fuchsia and orange bows on the boxes of party favors that included cupcakes from Hey Cupcake, and chocolate truffles from Big Top Candy Shop. Once the guests had filed in, the mixing and mingling began, and cocktail hour commenced. The staff included a bartender and three or four members of the catering staff. I had helped Neal and Lisa choose three small bite appetizers: a chicken/bacon/avocado bite, a goat cheese tartlet, and a crab salad. They were all wonderful, and I even mentioned to the tall, cute male caterer guy who was explaining the crab salad to me that I had actually helped with the menu. His eyes lit up and he said he was wondering that in the kitchen earlier, because he thought whoever had done so had done a great job. I wasn't sure if it was the wedding swirling around me or how easily I'm bought off with compliments, but had the guy proposed to me right then, I probably would have said "yes". The bride and groom were having a ball, greeting their guests and collecting their good wishes. I naturally gravitated to the gay couple we knew, as well as to the bartender. I don't remember specifics, but I liked her moxie. She mixed hard-pour Grey Goose cocktails for me all night. I caught one waitress, Krista, staring at me in a not-so-subtle way, until she finally asked if we were the family expecting to host a wedding that she had waited on months earlier. Relieved, I said that she had correctly recognized us. Geez, from the way she was staring I thought we might have been in a bar fight I didn't remember or something. The dinner buffet consisted of roasted beef with horseradish cream, grilled vegetables, a mixed green salad, and their Gruyere and cheddar mac & cheese. Everything, especially the beef and the mac & cheese, was excellent; it didn't come across as forgettable "buffet" food, if you catch my drift. I was thoroughly impressed. Service was seamless, efficient, and polite, and no one's wine glass went empty. After dinner came an unexpected toast from my dad. It was heartfelt, it was eloquent, and it was emotional. I thought we agreed on no toasts...but I suppose one was appropriate. If anyone can seamlessly transition from a moving toast to the traditional Arab folk dance called the "'debka", it's my dad. Amazingly, a lot of the guests joined in. That was my clue to head out to the balcony for a cigarette. The crown jewel of the venue is the elevated view of 6th Street, and especially the Ritz Theater sign which makes an excellent backdrop for photos. On this particular Friday night, I took several minutes to relax and observe the surging mass of hoi polloi beneath me, without having to be mired down there in the middle of them. I caught up with some family friends until I heard them play Gaga and Nicki Minaj. If anyone on her side of the family had any lingering doubts about my homosexuality, I can assure you they were put to rest after my brief foray onto the dance floor. When the evening had wound down, it was time for them to run out the front door to the applause and rice we had waiting for them. Like I mentioned in my review of Occupy Austin, it just so happened the Occupy Austin protesters were marching down 6th Street at that exact moment, and even ended up in some of my brother's wedding pictures. The guy holding the megaphone said "Congratulations to the happy couple." You gotta love Austin. As a host and as a caterer, Parkside knocked this wedding out of the park. Of all times and places I had my fingers crossed for a success, this was it. Hell, this wasn't happy hour at some gay bar, or some random culinary shot in the dark restaurant visit; this was my brother's wedding. It simply HAD to be 5 stars. And thankfully, it was. The food here is mixed. Some things we had were delicious - the butternut squash bisque, for example, was extremely tasty, and I'm not usually one to like vegetable dishes. Similarly, the short ribs with cilantro appetizer dish was also very good. They also have quite a large selection of raw food; we tried the small sample platter, which came with clams, oysters, ceviche, fluke, crab, lobster, and two other kinds of fish. The only things I really liked were the crab and lobster, but I'm not a big fan of raw food so I'm not really qualified to judge the other items. Some entrees were interesting, such as the skate with currants and bass with olives. The contrasting tastes worked together well. A few dishes were disappointing - the gnocchi, for instance, was overcooked, and the mushroom appetizer we were looking forward to turned out to be mostly wood ears, and not very tasty at all. The primarily problem with this place is the portion sizes of the entrees; the skate and fish portions were probably 3 ounces each, and they didn't come with sides, which are extra (and undistinguished). This may make sense for a place like Uchi, where you expect to order many dishes, but then the tab starts to go up really high. We spent about as much here as we did for the tasting menu at Uchi's, and for that price Uchi's provides a much better experience, in terms of food, atmosphere, and service. If they increase the portion sizes (or lower entree prices) and get more consistent this may become a good restaurant, but currently it needs work. read more

I WANTED SO BAD TO 1-STAR THIS PLACE!!! I'M BEING FORCED TO ADD MORE STARS!!!!! I had dreams of downtown food goodness to take my father-in-law to. He's from Wash DC so I wanted to impress him. I scoured over reviews and settled upon this place. We arrive on time. I ask for a rooftop table. First, you need to know that the cool top of the restaurant that is in the photos is NOT OPEN. Okay, I try to recover. That's ok, I see tables that are up by the window, good for people watching. The hostess leads us back...and back...the the farthest, saddest table you have ever seen. By itself, on the back wall next to an opening in the back. I say, "Um, do you have any other tables, I'm not sure I want to be right by the kitchen." "That's not the kitchen" She says, irritated, "it's the..." we both realize that what she is going to say next is worse than the kitchen. The bathrooms. She doesn't finish. "This is the only table we have for you" She says, her b*tchy tone increasing. I see other tables open. "What about that one" I point. "That one is reserved for another party" She states flatly. "We made a reservation and we're here with an out of town guest, isn't there any another table?" I say, with a hint (ok, maybe more) of b*tchiness of my own. "THIS is the table we have for you!" That's it. That's all she says. She doesn't offer to check, she doesn't tell us the first round of drinks are on the house, doesn't commiserate with us "yea, I know this table isn't great but the food is great so give us a chance!" She says nothing. Just waits for us to sit. o_0 It's that time in an argument when a decision has to be made. Go full on in or settle down. My husband wants to leave. I look at my father in law. He looks uncomfortable. I would leave if he weren't here. I say, "let's sit down." What a horrible start. I mean, god awful horrible start. I was determined. All I could think of was "1 star, 1 star", "I'll have The Garden to drink" I say, but secretly... "1 star" I'm thinking, this place is going down in my review. The waiter was overly enthusiastic to make up for the hostess. It was annoying at first but then he kind of grew on me. BUT. Here's the kicker. I thought the food would be good, but, THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC. And I'm picky. I'm a cook. I was impressed. The ceviche was perfect, the fried green tomatoes were heavenly, with bits of bacon jam, wow. The shrimp, the swordfish, the steak...it all was presented artistically but not obnoxiously so. The taste combinations were harmonious. They even threw in the mac and cheese for free, and it was delicious. The desserts were amazing, we had the banana split doughnuts and the hazelnut ganache. Wonderful. Incredible even. So, there you go. Honestly, the food was 5 stars but I had to take off 1 star for the hostess. Places like this should take note. Hire a competent hostess. Not the one that looks the best and has zero people skills. Hey, if she's pretty AND talented then wonderful! She could have smiled, said she was sorry, come to our table later and check on us, all things that an experienced hostess would have thought of. But she actively avoided eye contact all night. After standing out on the bridge in the cold for what seemed an eternity, we decided to get some food. No, we never really saw bats. They did come out, but it was too dark to see anything:( Anyway, we made our way to the 6th street, and I started to check out yelp reviews as I walk by different restaurants and bars. I finally decided on Parkside. It actually took a bit of persuasion to get everyone else to agree to hit Parkside. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by an amazon aka seating nazi and hostess. She wouldn't let us go up to the roof top because there is no seating for 3. What exactly does that mean? There are seatings for 2 and 4, but if we have 3, we are denied of the rooftop. We were taken to this table toward the back. The restaurant was pretty empty at the time, so we asked for a booth by the window. The amazon denied it. We eventually found parties of 2s sitting in those booths later. Perhaps we just looked like tourists who is just too tired to complain. But again, the amazon looked like she could really beat us up, so we just sat down quietly and waited for the waitress. Luckily the waitress was very nice. She informed us of the happy hour (we had 30 minutes left!!!) So we proceed to order a bunch of drinks (half price) and food (also half price). As you can see, I have already rated this place 5 star. For those of you who have read my reviews before, you know I don't take much of service or price into account........so no amazon deduction here. The food hit a spot. In fact, the food hit multiple spots. The food hit more than just a few spots. Where do I start.....the crab cake thing was totally unexpected. There isn't much crab in there....in fact you may have to use a microscope to find any crab, but it was extremely tasty. I have no idea how it was done, but we cleaned it out fast. Then there was the fried okra. It's definitely not the first time I had fried okra, but it was definitely the best fried okra I ever had. The Calamari was good, but the sauce was amazing. I can't quite place the recipe, all I can tell you is that it was goooooood. The bar steak was delicious and done to perfection. I ordered medium rare and got medium rare toward the rare....so the chef read my mind. The fried were also delicious......the dipping sauce was even better than the calamari!! Did I mention that it was all half price before 7pm? I was completely stuffed by the time I was done with the food. I think the food was meant to be "Shared", but we were hungry. When I saw the dessert menu, I absolutely couldn't resist this one (check out the picture). Chocolate mousse, hazelnut crunch, poached bear and brandy ice cream. Came here for a little NYE dinner, had an 8:30 reservation through open table and was seated promptly. They placed us in far back end table for two on the bar side against the wall, quaint little spot but not that great considering it was the closest table to the restrooms, lots of foot traffic. Started off with the 4 course pre fixe menu, ordered the venison tartar - roasted suckling pig - grilled ribeye, and a desert that apparently i do not remember, that explains that besides the picture. Waitress was emotionless, seriously.. I didn't know if she was happy or about to meltdown crying... No freaking idea... Everything was said with a straight face, no opinions or recommendations of the food when asked. This whole waitress issue ruined the experience overall... I felt like we were causing her physical and or emotional pain by just being there... I was scared. The venison tartar was great, balanced texture with a truly raw taste going on, much enjoyed! Quail egg I believe, on top completed the dish. The roasted suckling pig, boy oh boy did you guys trick me! Even the guy next to me asked what my dish was because he had the same dish and didn't know if it's what he ordered (we both let out a good chuckle) This dish with undercooked pasta (yes, undercooked) I don't need no lesson on properly cooking a pasta dish... was so disappointing, and the "pig" part, well good luck trying to find the quarter sized single piece under all the glorified cafeteria children's pasta, accompanied by a 1 inch streak of some type of BBQ sauce in the corner of the plate. The grilled ribeye, you were cooked amazingly rare, just how I ordered it. Sliced well, displayed well, you were delicious, and the best part of the meal. You saved my soul after experiencing the prior dish. The Desert was desert, some type of rice pudding banana treat I believe, nothing to remember. If the service was different and the pig dish didn't exist or I ordered a different 2nd course, but seriously... you read - roasted suckling pig - what the hell else would you order!?! This is my second time here and wanted to give it the 2 time chance review but it let me down. It's a well deserving 3.5 if that helps. Parkside has taken over the transformed former Dan McClusky's space, evolving the area from standard steak joint to pseudo-upscale new American cuisine restaurant. That part's not rocket science, and while that assertion wouldn't necessarily predispose a restaurant to automatically work out each and every kink in their system, these guys are making an effort to smooth out the bugs that come when you open a new restaurant. At least they were when we stopped in this weekend. The space itself looks terrific: lots of modern touches: sophisticated mirrors and simple elegant lighting rule the day in the place, and they've left much of the brick facade present via the previous occupant's business intact. That works to their advantage. The menu is upscale and presentable and a little hodge-podge; the fresh fish samplings were found to be terrific via my dining companion, and I settled into a brandy-based chicken dish that I genuinely enjoyed. They seem to have a decent selection of beers and wines here, and we tried out one of the signature cocktails that proved interesting. It's a little odd when you figure out that while this is a grown-up establishment, it's kind of hard to completely remove yourself from the fact that you're still on sixth street: during our dinner there were all kinds of crazy shenanigans and sirens going off. But despite the general chaos outdoors, I'd likely give these guys another shot. 'Cause it's a move in the right direction for sixth...one that, despite its best efforts, might see the road grow up a little. read more

In town for a Celebratory event and in search of a great restaurant within walking distance of hotel..while hopes were high... Parkside was just.. Ok. For starters .. Called ahead to inquire about availability, and upon arrival a mere 7 minutes later, we were told a few hour wait .. Huh? What? What? I asked about the empty table within view at the back of the bar and informed no... So, we sat in foyer to regroup a new game plan ...shortly thereafter we Magically heard we could be seated and taken to the adjoining dining area where many empty tables were within view (and remained empty thru most of our meal) as we sat in an intimate banquette... With that behind us, service was a miss. Unfortunately, in comparison to his counterparts (which were in clear view and earshot), Our waiter exhibited the lease bit of effort and care. We rose above it and enjoyed regardless. Now for the culinary and kitchen talent: simple menu/offerings to choose from. For apps - The fried calamari and garlic aioli were great and the fresh bread and salted butter enjoyed. Our entrees consisted of over salted farro risotto, chicken, steak, and a perfectly smoked pork chop. We then split Parkside's version of strawberry shortcake which we all agreed was the least fav item of the evening. Beyond Happy Hour specials, I can't say that I'm too impressed with Parkside. If you're looking for a place to take a 1st date and try some new dishes, then perhaps this is the place for you. Prices are a little steep for the portions served...but hey some people like paying more for less. Oysters: They definitely have a variety of oysters. To me though, just the average restaurant oyster is good enough! When I tasted some of the other oysters offered, the flavors I experienced were not appetizing. I forget which one it was, but it had a very "metal-like" taste to it. EHH...yeah I wasn't feeling it. Overall the different varieties just weren't for me. Give me a dozen regular oysters, a bottle of Tabasco, horse radish, a couple of saltine crackers, & Miller Lite!! Call me Simple! Just don't call me Shirley! Parkside has an interesting menu at a price. If you're looking to try different types of dishes w/o breaking the bank, then definitely Hit Up their Happy Hour!! Their Happy Hours isn't amazing but you can try something New and not leave thinking you got ripped since you're still hungry and will probably Hit Up the gyro stand across the street. 3 Stars: Not because they're bad in any way. I made reservations because you never know when or how busy a place can get, especially on a Saturday night in Austin (and at a super popular restaurant)! Interior is nice and has a casual, laidback feel. The hostess and servers are very attentive, friendly and helpful! My only qualm would be that it took awhile to get things but that's understandable, especially since the restaurant was so busy. We started off with drinks and I ordered the ginger and spice (bulleit rye, fruit lab ginger, ancho reyes chile liqueur, habanero bitters) it was so strong I could only finish half of it. Yes, I am lame but my stomach was empty (except for a moscow mule from another bar)! I knew if I finished it I wouldn't be in a good state to enjoy my meal. My best friend ordered the new old fashioned (jim beam, brandy, rum) it was good, lighter and less intense than my drink! I also ordered the sage blossom (milagro reposado, lemon, pomegranate-sage shrub), the waitress said it was the sweetest drink on the menu and although it was sweeter than my first drink, it was still incredibly strong. For starters I got the ceviche which had sliced avocado, tomato and jalapeños. It was really good and fresh. He ordered the crispy calamari, I'm not sure what kind of sauce it came with but the sauce was good. The calamari was crispy and not over battered. Entree wise, I got the dirty wild rice with smoked tofu, pickled red onions and remoulade. I had the option of having it cooked in butter or going the vegan route. I went with the butter (because butter is amazing). The wild rice was good, the tofu was really smokey, I liked how the onions weren't too acidic and the remoulade was a great compliment to the rest of the components. He ordered the roasted duck breast with farro. The duck was moist but a little on the fatty side for me, I thought the farro was really good but he didn't like it. We split the parkside fries and they were topped with garlic...so good when the drinks are so strong. For dessert I got the sweet potato custard with coconut mousse, spiced pecans, marshmallow fluff and pecan ice cream. SO GOOD. The fluff was awesome. The custard when eaten with every other component made for the perfect bite. My friend ordered the chocolate espresso bar and it was intense! I thought it would be a little sweeter, probably because it was considered a dessert. The struggle is so real here, everything sounds delicious (and most likely is). read more

Two words: Happy hour. I came for happy hour with my friends and we were not disappointed. Everything on the bar menu and all drinks but the wines were 1/2 off. We ordered calamari and ceviche to share and we each ordered a plate of bar steak and fries ($10 only for steak). The calamari was not anything unique but still good. The ceviche though was amazing. After we finished the ceviche I had regrets about ordering the steak and not just ordering myself a plate of ceviche. The fish was super juicy and kind of melted in your mouth when you ate it -- I was impressed (and for only $6.50 a plate too!) The steak was unimpressive. I ordered medium rare and got a medium steak (my friends ordered medium and got medium well) and the meat was tough and hard to chew/cut. Still, it's $10 steak so I can't complain. As for drinks, we tried quite a few of their unique cocktails and my favorite was the strawberry sunrise (vodka, lime, bubbles, with strawberry on the brim). Beyond the difficulty of getting to 6th Street just to have dinner with friends, the atmosphere of the Place was nice. Service was very slow, by that I mean that food coming out of the kitchen took forever. Then, a second drink, which was Cava, took way too long. Oysters are so delicious here! The calamari and crap fritters are tasty as well. I've always had pretty good service here, no complaints. I wish they had a bigger cocktail list. The wine list is long, but I just haven't found the right glass of wine yet here. I'm more of a fan of reds. I recommend doing the oyster platter which gives you 12 oysters of 3 different kind. Parking can be a pain sometimes since it's on San Jac and 6th. Lastly, I recommend making reservations online to get into the restaurant because it can become packed fast and the wait is long. read more

Stayed at the Courtyard Mariott last night and we were looking for someplace to eat. Being pregnant, hanging out at 6th street didn't seem the same as it would have been if I could drink. Anyways, we stumbled upon Parkside and were definitely underdressed. Most of the patrons had collared shirts for men and my husband just had a tshirt. I went in with jeans and sneakers. The wait wasn't too bad, only a few minutes. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest and seemed to either not like having us in her section or just overwhelmed by the number of people in the restaurant. It wasn't enough to make us leave but enough to knock off a star. She did however smile after my husband ordered another beer and we ordered dessert. The food was good and the portions reminded me of tapas. We had the crab fritters, Mac and Cheese and the NY steak strip. For dessert we had the goat cheesecake. For two of us, the bill came out to $85. Would have been more if we came with a full appetite. Despite the tastiness of the food and the trendy atmosphere, I would consider trying another restaurant next time. read more

I was pretty disappointed by the food here, so I'm surprised by the good reviews. We ordered the seared salmon, butter roasted chicken, and New York strip. I also got Abby's first, a whiskey cocktail. The only thing I enjoyed was the cocktail, our waitress lit it on fire and sprinkled cinnamon on, so the drink was pretty, showy, cinnamon-y and not too strong. I got the salmon and it was fully cooked so it lost a lot of its moisture. It was served on beans and an almost sour sauce. It's pretty hard to mess up salmon so I ate the salmon but the beans it was served on just wasn't it. My boyfriend ordered the New York strip and I had two bites. They slice it up for you, and the first slice I got (end piece) was too charred and tough. The second piece I got was chewy. It was too charred on the outside in general, and we couldn't finish this dish either. My friend got the chicken and it was over cooked so it was dry. This place redeems itself only through its nice interior and ambience. Ok, first things first, I came here a couple of years ago and loved it. As in, raved about it, I loved it so. The night started off rocky when our delicious bread was served cold. That sucked. We ordered Brussels sprouts to share, these were tepid, but again great flavor. Imagine how much better it would have been if served warm! We also ordered the macaroni and cheese and it was lovely. My branzini was very nice, but a small portion which was disappointing because I did enjoy it. The risotto that the waitress recommended failed to hit the high mark she put it at. My Dad liked his pork. The scallops were good from what I gathered. My mother ordered a Cornish game hen . . . and expected the hen and instead got bits of hen. Our waitress wasn't exciting. She did the bare minimum. All in all, a let down. I brought people from out of town and I wish we had gone somewhere else, spent a lot less money and had a nice waitress and quite frankly, hot food. read more

Location if you're trying to do get a dinner party together on 6th. The Bad: the butternut squash (to be fair it wasn't bad, just bland, but I can't put that into the good part). Portion sizes for raw bar/ceviche and proteins. Loud noise compared to "intimate" ambience light setting. Kale salad doused in vinaigrette and the butternut squash yogurt around the bowl didn't seem to add anything to the salad. The Ugly: veal (lacked flavor, pittance of sauce, texture like dry clay toothpaste). NY strip (overdone, served coldish). Terrible price/portion/quality. Adding "gratuity" tax. The Point: 2 stars. come here for a decent pre game happy hour before raging the night away on dirty 6th.
