That being said, we love visiting PWG, and at the holidays you're greeted warmly, with no pretentious attitude, much like your family. Went as a guest to the Parkway Grill for the first time in several years. Let's start at the beginning. First of all the restaurant is very expensive. So you should expect the best. I had to wait 15 minutes for the waiter to offer me a beverage. My host had arrived before us so he had been served a drink and there was no followup. Now on to the food. I started out with a watermelon and tomato salad. The watermelon was great but the tomatoes were tasteless and not fully ripe. I also tried one of my friends oysters which were a little off. I had the filet for dinner and sent it back for more fire. No problem I thought. When it came back perfectly cooked someone had put a teriyaki type sauce on it. Yuch. I ate here over 20 years ago, but this review is based on my recent visit for my wife's birthday. My family and I came here to celebrate this occasion. The inside of this restaurant has not changed that much. It's still has a classic feel as opposed to the more modern feel restaurants. We began our evening with the Hamachi crudo and crab cake appetizers. The Hamachi crudo is so light, tangy and refreshing. The crab cake texture was nice and crunchy but I was not a particular fan of the sauce as it muddied the flavor of the crab cake for me. For dinner, I chose the Halibut special which was cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the taste of this and thought the spread that accompanied it worked well. My family also enjoyed the 40 dry aged NY steak and whole Branzino. For dessert, we shared the Crème Brule Napoléon and were treated to the chocolate lava cake for my wife's birthday. I usually go to Arroyo Chop House but my friend wanted to dine at Parkway Grill for her birthday. We had a 5:00 reservation and arrived a little early. There were two other women in front waiting for their table when another woman walked into the restaurant and asked if she needed to give her name to be seated. Instead of letting the woman know that others were waiting, the hostess asked her to give her a second and then seated her and her party. The two woman ahead of us mentioned to another hostess that my friend and I were also there waiting for our table. The hostess then called for those with a 5:00 reservation. I looked at her and asked if the reservation she was calling for was under my name and she said it was. Why wouldn't she just call my name instead of calling for 5:00 reservations? Not a good start to the evening and the hostess staff could use some training. Fortunately, our server, Kaylee more than made up for the poor impression made by the hostesses. Kaylee was friendly, attentive, and full of great suggestions. The tuna tartare and clam chowder were the highlights of the dinner and my friend said it was the best whiskey sour she'd ever had. The braised short ribs were very tender but could use more seasoning. Parkway Grill in Pasadena is such a wonderful restaurant and I have been dining here many times over the years, usually for special occasions. Last night did not disappoint as the room was appropriately decorated for the holidays which added to the always delightful ambiance. Beginning with valet parking (I know this is a minor detail... but one attendant opens the driver's side door while a different attendant opens the passenger side.) Just a nice touch. From the warm greeting by the host who brings you to your table to the servers and food runners, everything is perfectly choreographed. We each had specialty cocktails (the Herradura Margarita served up is especially good) as well as the variety bread basket definitely worth the upcharge. Followed with a Parkway Caesar with white Tuscan anchovies (one order split), a Saturday special Linguine pasta with steak, button mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, scallops with lobster crusted potatoes, a glass of Rose and a glass of Riesling, Creme Brulee Napoleon with Phyllo squares filled with vanilla bean custard over a caramel sauce and some French Press coffee with the dessert. Came here for an early father's day celebration. I thought Parkway Grill overall was really nice. They were very busy but I was able to find a parking in the street. There are valet if that is what you guys want too. We ordered a few things and for the most part, I thought everything was decent to great. We ordered a bit of everything, from crab cakes, bean soup(taste like it sounds in a good way), steak, pork, fish and a few sides dishes: mushroom, mash potatoes, shishito peppers, cauliflowers, and lobster risotto. I would say that some of the sides didn't do it for me like the mash potatoes and the cauliflowers. I don't really love risotto but the one they made here really hit it for me. I also like the spicy shishito peppers that had the right amount of spicy. As for the crab cake, the crab cake itself was good but I thought the avocado didn't mesh that well together with it. As individuals, I like it but as a combination it didn't go together. We order rib eye, fish of the day(seabass), and hamon pork dish(believe it was a special). Although rib eye is nothing special, but it was also made pretty well. Like out of the 3 we ordered, I would probably take out the steak just because it wasn't special but it's nice when you can share all 3 of it together. The seabass with the sauce and veggies were really great together. I think the most surprising was the hamon pork. Never had anything like it but all the flavors from the apple sauce to great tender the pork is, it really was something special. I want to mention they recommended medium rare and that's what we ordered and when it came it was medium well but they were so nice and took it back and made us a new one and took off the corkage fee. Also, they asked if we wanted something while we wait for them to cook a new hamon dish. Desserts were pretty whatever imo but I usually don't order it in most places so I didn't deduct any points because of it. My wife took me out for my Birthday to one the best restaurants in Pasadena. We were excited to return. It has been a while since we had been there We were seated at a table in the back, next to the waiter's area. Definitely not an ideal location. Strike 1 We ordered a cocktail and relaxed looking over the menu. The waiter told us about the specials and we ordered. My wife ordered the chicken tortilla soup and crab cakes for her entree. She was happy with her selections. I ordered my favorite shrimp "corn dogs" for appetizer and the lamb shank special for my entree. The waiter said these are so tender, you don't need a knife. Apps arrived timely and looked great The shrimp was over cooked and tough. Not great, they serve so many of these i figured that they could prepare this perfect every time. Strike 2. There was a long delay between the appetizer being delivered and the entree. Trying to figure out why there was such a delay. Neither of these two item, crab cakes and lamb shank should take that long. This delay was about 30 minutes, fouled off that pitch. The entrees arrived and looked fabulous. What we expected from such a fine establishment. Then I started to cut my lamb shank. It was tough. Not only did i need the steak knife, but i probably could have used something more. I don't know what happened for that preparation, by it was not up to par. Lamb shanks need to braise for a long time to become tender. Strike 3. We ordered desert and that was good. Lemon custard with vanilla ice cream. Then they gave us a second desert for my birthday, which was strange. Why the upsell on the second desert? Valet parking is $8. Nickel and diming customers after spending that much money really chaps me. Unfortunately, the quality of the food and the overall experience made it clear to us that we will not be returning. I hope the other Smith Brothers restaurants in Pasadena, Smittys and Arroyo Chop House, do not have these same types of issues. We will not be returning to any of these. read more

Parkway Grill has been a staple in Pasadena since 1984. I dinned here many years ago and finally got the opportunity to return. We came here for a birthday celebration on a Monday night. It was fairly empty when we arrived but by the time we left the place had filled up. Our server Juan was delightful and attentive. We ordered cocktails. I had my usual - a Grey Goose Martini, dry, up, with Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives. The hand stuffed blue cheese olives were amazing! The blue cheese was so creamy. This martini was one of the best I've had. (I also recommend the French 85, which was also delicious.) We started with the breadbasket. There were four of us and the small size was plenty. It contained cornbread madeleines, cranberry nut bread, flat crackers, & sourdough. All made in house and each one was yummy! The butter that accompanied it was sprinkled with sea salt. We also shared the Ahi Tuna Tartar. The Ahi was fresh, the chopped avocado was buttery, and the sauce had a nice flavor. Our entrées consisted of: The fish of the day (I think it was Sea Bass), Ragù alla Bolognese, U.S.D.A. Prime Filet Mignon with a side of Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes, and the Bibb Lettuce Salad. They grow their own organic vegetables and herbs in a garden behind the restaurant. I could taste the quality in my salad. The Di Steffano Burrata Cheese that came with it was so soft and creamy. My friends were all very happy with their dinner selections. Everything was fresh and flavorful, including the pasta, which is made in house. The presentation of the Filet was a little sad compared to the other plates. For dessert we shared the Meyer Lemon Custard (topped with a shortbread cookie with house made ice cream and fresh raspberry sauce) and the Chocolate Lava Cake with berries and house made ice cream. Both were fantastic! The food was delicious, and the service was great. The stained glass skylights and the beautiful bar from the 1920s added to the appeal of the ambience. Parkway greeted us with a handwritten letter of congratulations and a free dessert. Between ordering and then receiving the food, it was about an hour wait. We did not order any appetizers, and the waiter kept asking if we were okay LOL. I suppose with such long wait times, people usually order appetizers. The food itself was great! The short rib was tender and flavorful, but the scallops are truly AMAZING. First of all, they are enormous but also cooked to perfection. The shrimp linguine pasta was creamy and well seasoned. Portions for the entrees are definitely on the smaller side. We were not extremely hungry so 1 entree per person was enough, however I suggest you order an appetizer or some sides to fill you up. I loved the appetizer special - whipped ricotta, duck prosciutto (beyond amazing), arugula, and bread. Not pictured was the beet salad which had the most delicious sweet beets in it. My favorite dish was the braised short rib which I'm still craving days later with it's perfect soft meaty taste (side vegetables were outstanding too). The scalloped potatoes and broccolini (perfectly crispy) sides melted in my mouth with how delicious they were. My friend's prime ribeye was the best steak I've ever had and my complimentary bday dessert (Crème Brûlée Napoleon) melted in my mouth with the best sweetness to it. The ambience is dimmed and can be both a place for dinner dates or business dinners. Sea bass was microscopic and oddly formed like two scraps had been put together for $64.00, mediocre service and could care less and put-out attitude for food allergies. I am disabled on a rollator and the valet was downright rude, begrudgingly getting my walker, no special assistance to ramp just a grunt that I might want to use it. Upon return he was not at my door or helping to return the rollator to the trunk - had to be asked by a member of my party. This was after a generous tip and payment of the high parking fee. Shrimp corndogs were fried and the Thai sauce was like a sweet and sour taste - very good. Lamb lollipops were also fantastic and definitely an appetizer bc it comes in three and are small. Both dishes were light and refreshing, although the oysters did have a bit of grit to them. For my entrée I had the second best Chilean seabass I've ever had. This was the first time I've ever been asked how I'd like my fish cooked. I ordered it medium rare, same as I order my steak. This fish was exquisite. It had a lovely sear on the outside that was packed with flavor and the inside was glistening and moist. Excellent fish! My companion had the lamb and it was divine. Don't get me wrong, Pasadena is a great location, but when you are sitting literally right next to Arroyo Chop house, one of the best steakhouses in LA, it can be very intimidating. The Chilean Seabass was awesome, none of those undercooked or overcooked miscarriages, temperature was on par, fresh, soft, and buttery. To be honest, Filet Mignon couldn't really compare to Arroyo Chop House's, but they did make the best out of it. It was prepared medium rare with good timing and temperature, red to the center, and seasoned with salt and pepper. It does come with a smaller price tag, can't complain. The side dishes were truly delicious. The broccolini looks simple, but is roasted to perfection. The lobster risotto is very rich in flavors, with lobster pieces sprinkled throughout. Finally, the scalloped potatoes here are a must have. It is a bit of a cross between scalloped potatoes and potatoes au gratin. The bread basket and the black bean soup were okay, but neither of them adds much taste value to the meal. The Ragù alla Bolognese smelled great, but it was a bit disappointing. The entire dish felt very heavy and monotonous, and it turned out quite dull in the end. The dessert was decent and the raspberry purée, but I might choose something else next time.
