I had visited this salon based on a recommendation from a friend. I had a haircut with Tiffani, and she was awesome. Such a nice person and gave such a wonderful haircut. Because she's an awesome stylist, my review is for the salon and how appointments are taken and kept (in my case, not kept). I had scheduled an appointment a month or so in advance with Tiffani. But, I had to switch the appointment, so I called a few weeks before my appointment and spoke with a receptionist, who I thought had changed the appointment to a different day. On the day of my haircut, I was surprised that I didn't get a call or a reminder re my haircut. So, I called the salon, and I was told that I didn't have an appointment (so the receptionist didn't change my appointment) and there were no accommodations made for an appointment that was supposed to have. Annoying, but no big deal. But, then ... I rescheduled my appointment to another day -- today. My appointment was for noon, but less than an hour before my appointment, I get a phone call from the salon that Tiffani can't make the appointment because she's sick. I totally understand that people get sick, but what I don't understand is how the salon doesn't have a policy to ensure that if an appointment is missed due to a stylist's absence that I don't have any options to get a haircut that same day. I had made this appointment so that I had a haircut before a trip, and now I'm scrambling to find someone to cut and color my hair. Had today's missed appointment happened by itself, it wouldn't have been a big deal (or if the first missed appointment had only happened), but considering my first appointment was also not properly made and kept, I will not be returning to this salon. read more

I think Sevon may be off her game a bit, as her cuts are getting more choppy and inconsistent. I was shocked when she was looking over my hair prior to a cut and admonished, "Who cut your hair last time? This is awful -- doesn't blend at all." I didn't want to say it, but it was her, if fact, that last cut my hair. Awkward! I'm sure she'll be back in the game soon - probably just a bad spell. The salon is very nice, quiet, and clean. Parking is by meter (coins only) or using the pay-by-space garage in the back of the salon (cash only). Sevon only takes cash or checks too, by the way. read more

Sevon is wonderful! I would not trust anyone else with my hair. She is an absolute master of color and I love the cut/style every time. I needed a stylist that understood my hair... I was having issues styling my naturally curly hair on a daily basis and when I saw Sevon she told me exactly what to do/product and voila! Tiffani is the best of the best! I've only seen her twice but every freakin time - I walk out super happy with my hair results. The first time I visited, I just needed a hair cut and I asked for layers. It's always a hit or miss with haircuts, and honestly, I didn't have much expectations. Tiffani started off with analyzing my hair length and looking at the outgrown layers I already had. She then told me my hair was at disconnected lengths and wanted to help me with that. After half an hour, I got my layers corrected and walked out a VERY happy customer. The second time I visited her, I just wanted to cut off my dry ombre ends, go darker but lighter, if that makes sense and just get a different look - basically anything other than ombre! I showed her a picture and she was determined to get me that color and of course give me some layers again. In the middle of the hair cut, I was just curious about purple dye because I've thought about it before. Tiffani was great, there was no pressure to do it that day but she wanted to show me how the purple would look on my hair, so she gave me a hair sample. That day, I was like heck - why not?! Tiffani mixed colors and showed me the shades she mixed and made sure I liked the shade before going further. This is a great salon, conveniently located in downtown San Mateo with a huge parking garage directly behind it and many boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops nearby. The stylists are a skilled group that seem to be great friends as well as colleagues, celebrating each others' birthdays and other important occasions with genuine warmth and style. For over 15 years, Bobby Kalos has been "my" stylist Not only is he a delightful person, but he is incredibly skilled at handling difficult hair. He is the only stylist I have found in 20 years who has the ability to transform my fine, chemo-frizzed hair into soft, gentle waves, and he is an especially talented colorist. I have never found anyone else who has cared enough about his/her "craft" to tackle the challenges my hair presents, so if his career has taken him to a different salon, I have followed him. I just want to start off by saying that I was completely traumatized by my last hair appointment that turned disastrous at a different high profile salon in SF. With that said I was nervous about fixing my hair this time around. As luck would have it I was able to get a last minute appt. with Alex, who is only there on Saturdays and tends to get a lot of walk ins for that reason. She transformed my hair. I am very satisfied with my experience here. I had a regular trim with a little detailed bang cut and Tiffany did it very carefully and thoroughly (almost half hour just for my bang alone). My hair is growing out beautifully on the front and back and surprisingly, the longer bang doesn't annoy me like before when it started growing out. Tiffany is lovely we talked about almost everything. My boyfriend once had a cut here with Bobby and he liked it very much too. This was my first partial highlights and haircut in about 8 years. I was nervous but my hair turned out amazing. Thanks to Tara! This was my first visit to the salon but it won't be my last. I've been seeing Sevon for 10 years now - across job changes, commutes, and moves to different cities in the Bay Area, making the trip to Sevon every 6 weeks has been a constant. Her eye for color, cut, and style are unsurpassed, she is a pleasure to sit for and chat with, and best of all: she will tell me no! As someone not skilled with hair styling, I appreciate that Sevon focuses on providing me with a style that will work best for my minimal maintenance and styling routine but still looks professional. When I wanted to just give up and go all silver, Sevon advocated for what was healthiest for my hair, what would be most flattering to me, and as a bonus, is so much more maintenance friendly (with the new color and highlights I can stretch my touch-ups to 6 or 7 weeks if needed, without looking run down!). Bobby is a true hair artist with both color and cut. He does highlights, all-over color and touch ups and has a great eye to match color with skin tone. I love my color and it looks so natural. I've been going to Sevon for years after finding out about her while I was out shopping one afternoon. I saw a woman with a fabulous haircut, and stopped her to ask where she'd gotten it cut and she recommended her stylist Sevon, who was then working at a salon in Burlingame. Sevon has seen me and my hair through some really challenging times in the past seven (I think) years, including a period where a medical condition affected my hair. It looked so bad that it kept me awake at night, worrying about how bad it looked, and brought me to tears on more than one occasion. Through it all, she's been able to give me great haircuts that hid the issue and reassure me that my hair looks fine- and I've even gotten compliments on it! It's not easy to wake up every morning and look in the mirror and only see the effects of my health on my hair; I worry that it's so obvious to strangers on the street that it's all they will notice, but every single one of my friends and my dermatologist have all said that my hair issues are unnoticeable, and that my hair looks good. If someone can disguise the issues with my hair while still making me look good, I think they only deserve the highest recommendation, and Sevon deserves that credit.
