Did you know that India has the largest vegetarian population in the world? Studies show around 20-39% of Indians are vegetarians, a higher rate than most other nations. Takeout needed and this place has always caught my eye. They share a parking lot with Sprouts so I've been wanting to stop in. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala ($19.99) and the Khatti Dal ($10.99) for takeout. First of all, that chicken tikka masala was fire. It was aromatic, fragrant, and the spice level was perfect. The khatti dal on the other hand, it wasn't for me. Not to say it was bad, I just didn't quite care for it. Since it was a takeout order, I can't comment too much about the service but this place is massive. Plenty of seating, lots of parking, and great food. Not Recommended: food just OK, inconsistent service, and cleanliness concerns. We'd driven by this restaurant several times and finally decided to give it a try. Before going, we checked Yelp and were encouraged by its 4.0-star rating. Food Three of us ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Vindaloo, Butter Chicken, and Garlic Naan. Unfortunately, even though we arrived right at opening, they were already out of both of their popular biryanis. The garlic naan was decent but nothing memorable. The Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken were both flavorful with a nice spice level. The Chicken Vindaloo was another story. While the sauce was good, the chicken itself tasted "off"--not spoiled, but old enough that I chose not to finish it. Cleanliness After our meal, I noticed that the restaurant had received five violations on its most recent county health inspection, conducted about a month ago. While I can't say whether that had anything to do with the chicken, it certainly didn't inspire confidence. The restroom was even more concerning. The sinks and toilets were dirty, both towel dispensers were empty, and the odor suggested it hadn't been cleaned recently. A neglected restroom doesn't leave a good impression about the overall operation. Service On the positive side, the owner/chef was friendly and happy to chat with us. Unfortunately, the rest of the service was disappointing. We spent about 2 1/2 hours there despite being the only dine-in customers, although there were several DoorDash pickups. Our server rarely smiled or engaged with us, spoke so quietly that we often had to ask her to repeat herself, never offered to refill our water glasses, and initially brought a single check after we'd requested two separate checks. She corrected it after we pointed out the mistake. Atmosphere The dining room is attractively decorated and has a pleasant ambiance. Value Prices were reasonable for the portion sizes. The Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Vindaloo were each $15.99, and the Garlic Naan was $3.99. Overall Unfortunately, the cleanliness issues, slow and inattentive service, and disappointing Vindaloo outweighed the positives. With so many good Indian restaurants in the area, I can't recommend Passage to India and won't be returning. read more

Passage to India? More like Passage to Flavortown. I've been eyeing this place for years but for one reason or another, I never bothered popping in. I finally got around to placing an order for takeout. I ordered a tikka masala and a new-to-me dish khatti dal. The tikka masala slaps. Good heat at medium, super flavorful, and the chicken was juicy. The khatti dal was not for me though. It's a little too tangy so I don't think I'll be ordering this dish again. I like it. I came here for dinner last night for the first time, and I was very impressed! We walked in just after 5:30pm last night (Friday) and there were only a handful of people seated, so we were able to be sat right away, which was really nice. We were very promptly provided water and menus, and were left to explore. I ended up getting my staple, Tikka masala, but instead of chicken I went with lamb. The meat was flavorful and tender, and sauce (I got medium), was delicously savory, not too spicy, and the exact right texture. In addition to our main entrees, we ordered their garlic naan. Soooooo good (and the portion was giant!). The main dish portion was also very generous - I took more than half of it home. The vibe is very lovely inside. Low music playing, dimmer, warm lighting. It's very cosy and intimate feeling without being over the top. The service was also above par. We were checked on, but not too much, and the servers attending us were polite and prompt. We finally made it here after months of asking ourselves what new restaurant we wanted to try, Passage to India was always on the list but when it came time, we would forget! We were warmly greeted immediately and the wonderful smells of Curry and the other spices were a great welcome. I had the Tiki Masala and my wife had the Vegetable Korma. The lamb in my Masala was perfectly cooked and tender, and flavor was wonderful. My wife's Korma was loaded with veggies and flavorful as well. We also had the Butter Naan and Garlic Naan. The food here is delicious. We took a group of 7 and the service was decent. Not over the top but everything was timed right. The thing that struck us as odd was they no longer have a liquor license. The waiter said the owner didn't renew it. That cut our bill in half!!! We were disappointed about that. The food is so good but with no liquor license this explains why the parking lot is empty. Of note, an 18% service fee was added for our group. We get it but we would have tipped more if it was our choice, but if that is what they want then ok! read more

The food is extraordinary at every visit. Yummy and reliable. They primarily specialize in Northern Indian cuisine; their Indian Cuisine diversity range from various regional traditions with some South Asian delicacies. Just about everything tried is imitable and totally enjoyable. Close to fabulous. We offer praise to Chef Sudhir Seth and owner Sukhwinder Singh for extending patrons such an exquisite, delicious and consistent repartee. Passage to India's use of the traditional ingredients such as garam masala, turmeric, cumin, and cardamom, are exquisitely combined to create extraordinary traditional preparations. Their Naan is perfect. Delicious on its own. They offer choices such as plain, buttered, roti and more! On one of our visits, we had the vegetable Samosas (I don't think any other Indian resto can match these), we also enjoyed some regular plain Naan and the buttered Naan - superb. For our main courses, I went for the Lamb Andhra Curry. I must say that mutton was tender, tasty and excellent. Their perfect doses of Turmeric, Red Chili and Kopra were as close to perfect as I've tasted. Not to mention the ideal amount of Dhania (coriander)! My wife did the Tandoori Chicken Makhn which was also brilliant. Its perfect combinations of yogurt, spices and herbs made this creamy delicacy almost perfect - not to mention just the right amount of cashews in the mix. Wow! This place really exceeded my expectations. I placed a semi large order for a group of people- placing it while at the restaurant and waiting there. Inside there was plenty of seating- to the person who said it was out dated- it looked better dated than probably some of the Applebee's or chili's they have been to- it looked absolutely fine. The people in there were very kind and incredibly happy to help and recommend. I ordered the spicy red chicken curry, butter chicken, tikki masal, seer paneer curry, with garlic and cheese naan- all medium spicy. As I waited they brought out a complimentary of their tea which was very generous! After grabbing the food to go, I headed out. I'll be honest, I had some not so good experiences with Indian food and so I was a bit skeptical and this place overrides those other place. I have been a loyal customer of Happy's and while service and ambiance was average, he had the Best Chicken Tikka Masala Sauce!! The Chicken Tikka Masala was savory and not sweet like most Indian restaurants. I visited tonight for the first time under the new management and while they said they used same recipes, they do not!! While it somewhat tasted the same, it now has a sweet after taste. Less chicken and sauce was not as thick. Please follow Happy's recipe and remove the sweetness to the chicken tikka masala!! My husband and I went Sunday and tried their new lunch buffet. There were many offerings to choose from. 3 types of rice, several vegetarian dishes, goat curry and chicken dishes. It was nice to try new things. When we go at dinner, we often get the same dishes because they are so good. A new item we tried was the chicken 65. It was really good. The chicken was tender and the sauce was creamy with a nice level of spice. We will be back for that. read more

While looking at Google maps to get my bearings...part of my "process" when I'm not familiar with an area... I saw "Passage to India" and after looking over their menu of unique appetizers and mains...I was like yup! That what I want for dinner. First time in my life I've ever heard of "Kati Roll" let alone had one. My protein of choice was egg(scrambled) and found it super delicious! It reminded me of a "hand roll" that one could get at a sushi bar. The tortilla like wrap had a lot of firmness as well as some crispiness in every bite. For my main, I order the "Chapala" with fish (cat fish ). The fish was in a kind of spicy curry sauce which I thought was well season and just the right amount of spiciness for me. It comes with plain rice and over all vet satisfying. I also order some naan and used it with the rice to take up all that delicious curry style sauce. Lastly, I had Gulan Jamun, my very favorite among Indian desserts. Over all a flavorful, delicious and satisfying dinner. I would certainly come back as they have several dishes and preparations that I've never had. On final note, I was surprised that I was the only person in the dining area...and that this awesome restaurant wasn't more supported by the community. They do "take out" which kept my server busy but still food here deserves more attention and in person attendance...I hope those who like Indian food will come here and enjoy what they offer. read more

Pretty solid Indian restaurant! The smell of all the spices hits you as soon as you enter, which is when you know it's real. It's a small and quiet place, but they do play indian music in the background, which I appreciated. There was one waiter for all the tables, and he looked miserable, but he got it done. We got paneer kati rolls for appetizers (not photographed), and for our meals, I got chicken Tikka masala, husband got lamb roganjosh, and we shared garlic naan and nut and raisin naan. I loved our entrees. They were a big portion, came with rice, and were extra buttery and rich. Only downside was the naan. They had no garlic/nut raisin flavor at all. The staff is always friendly and ordering for pickup is the easiest for us. On this last trip we had dinner planned in the park so decided to grab a few items to bring from here. Picked up some Veggie Samosas (potatoes & peas were done well and I thought I had meat). Went for the buffet and was not disappointed. Passage -- specializing in North and South Indian cuisine -- offers one of the more extensive menus I have seen as an Indian restaurant. But, please, that isn't saying much considering my home base is in Tucson where we are fairly short on very good Indian food. Menu items include kati, pakora, mirchi; soups like sambar and mulligatawny; dosa -- yay!; various types of biryani, including goat; korma, curry, saag (one of my favorites), vindaloo; and even Chinese options -- what, what? Yes, there's fried rice and Schezuan noodles on the menu. Random. Lots of naan, too: plain, garlic, paneer, onion, keema and others. I especially enjoyed the saag, tikka masala and the aloo gobhi. A few dishes may be lacking in spice and heat, but I am guessing that's because the buffet is trying to cater to an expansive range of tastes. No problem. I get it. I like the layout of the place.
