We came here for a quick weekday date night and were SO impressed!! The food was AMAZING - very nicely spiced (I got mild and I felt like it was just spicy enough) and absolutely delicious, and had very solid portion sizes. We got the butter chicken, some naan, and a dosa to share, and were blown away at the quality of each dish, as well as the different sauces and lentil soup that the dishes came with. The food was also presented beautifully! We left feeling very full with a bunch of leftovers to spare, which was great. The service was amazing - we had some questions about the food and our server gave us great answers + recommendations! We were seated quickly and the greeting we got when we came in (from I think the owner?) was very personable and welcoming. The ambiance was very lowkey and chill, and so we were surprised with how beautifully our food was presented! Bummer to lower my rating from 5 stars since I loved my first visit here so much. I am also quite picky and careful with giving 5 stars ratings typically and was truly excited about this place after my first visit. However, when we came back so excited for more it was a weird experience here. We came at 5pm especially to try the banana Bajji listed as an option between 5pm-7pm only to be told it's not available. Then tried to order the Kara Kuzhambu with the lentil dumplings and told lentil dumplings not available anymore only okra/ eggplant option for this. The restaurant vibe felt really odd in general. We kind of felt like they weren't sure if they wanted to be open right now or something. The tables were not clean from lunch and they didn't get back to us when we asked questions. We decided to leave and come back another time given the great first experience. The next day, we decided to try again at lunch when the restaurant seems to do most of the business and I called to double check they have the Kara Kuzhambu with eggplant/ okra options just in case and two people seemed to have no idea what I am talking about. I spelled it, explained it's on the menu and it's a tamarind based curry- nothing. The dish I tried here before was very good and I really appreciate that their menu is marked for allergies and different diets. It seems to be very popular among Indian people and a fun cultural experience at weekend brunch/ lunch. However, the service felt really weird and unwelcoming this time and with the dishes listed on the menu but not being available it was a let down. The waiter told us the banana bajji and the lentil dumplings were discontinued completely so it was a bummer they are still listed on the menu. This confusing and unwelcoming exprience led to a big rating difference from me even though I really liked the food I tried in my first visit as well as the atmosphere. Still happy for that super fun first memory here though! My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. Visited this restaurant for the 1st time. The quality and size of the food portions was quite good. There were 4 in my part and 2 had Chicken Tikka Masala one had Korma Chicken and I had Kadai lamb. Their service was quite good also. The only disappointment was the standard of the decor and furnishings and there flys constantly buzzing around. Would I go there again - probably not. read more

Must come too!! Have come here 3 times over the past few months for various varieties they offer. Tried their Benne Dosa the first time and it felt like i was not missing home! From the ambience, to the service (Very attentive and friendly) to the food. The quality is so so fresh, all the three times I've eaten here. Came with family first, a big group and then came as a couple for their Bhojanam and their Thali. All three times was excellent. Even though we came late the first time, they entertained us with the same amount of attention. The other two times, the Bhojanam experience was wonderful.. the Thali was outstanding! Wonderful experience. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the dosa and mutton. The spread on the warm crispy dosa was so addictive. The mutton curry was such a treat because the meat was extremely tender, slightly fatty, and extremely flavorful. All the curries / gravy here have adjustable spice levels, but the meat itself is usually spicy. The bone is kept in and the marrow is soft. The texture is soft yet slightly stringy and chewy in a really satisfying way. Service can be a little inconsistent so you will have to be assertive, but everyone was very helpful and polite. It was also very busy (lunch). Food came out quickly. I am still thinking about the food! Would love to come back. read more

We used to come here all the time when it was New India Gate. We came for opening day of Sree and it was really good. Tonight, however we came in and were seated. We waited 20 minutes and nobody came to our table to even take a drink order. The restaurant was not overly busy, just a usual crowd size, and they did not appear understaffed. The waiters kept returning to tables that already had food. It is a shame because this has been our favorite spot for almost a decade. What are these gritty pieces? I don't want to chip my tooth like another person said on here. Also $16 for chicken tikka masala? It was pretty much just a soup with a few chicken pieces in it. Heard about their Thalis and visited on a weekend. Ordered chicken thali and mutton thali. The only difference between them is one dish. As soon as we ordered spiced buttermilk was served as a welcome drink. The actual meal came in after 15-20 minutes but I can understand because it was peak timing. Coming to taste, it is the best thali I have tasted in this area yet. I couldn't find fault with anything even if I wanted to. It was unlimited thali. It is normal to have unlimited rice but they served even chicken fry unlimited. Special shoutout to the service. Everyone - the lady who took the order to the ones who served food were very welcoming. They regularly checked in to make sure we got what we needed. I will be a regular customer. My hubs and I decided to order takeout from here. I've seen the restaurant when passing by and know that the spot has really great reviews, both on Yelp and on Grubhub. So we decided to give it a shot when I was craving Indian and we were too tired to actually go out. For our mains we ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala (mild), Lamb Vindaloo (medium), and Chicken Jalfrazy (aka Jalfrezi, also medium). Each of the main dishes came with its own small takeout box of basmati rice- something I always appreciate (not having to order rice on top of $15+ individual dishes). I also ordered the garlic naan. Since the bill was already getting up there in price, I decided to forego our favorite app (samosas). The order arrived in plastic containers that are reusable if cleaned ("free" Tupperware, woo hoo!), Nothing was spilled and it was packed ok. The garlic naan was probably my favorite, it was delicious and perfectly cooked naan bread. The meat for all three main dishes was tender and well prepared, too. The sauces/flavor of each of the main dishes was not what I expected. I don't know how to describe it other than that each of the dishes tasted somewhat vaguely of a canned soup? i.e., one sort of tasted of tomato soup, and another of vegetable soup. We were also kind of disappointed that the vegetables in the jalfrezi looked as though they came from a frozen veggie mix. I guess when it comes to Indian cuisine I have sort of have come to expect sauces that taste unlike anything I can compare to a canned western food, and veggies that are bigger/fresher. But knowing that any Indian Food I've ever tried is already Americanized, I don't know how unfair that expectation is. Maybe what I ate was more authentic in some way that I can't know (having never had the privilege of visiting/dining in India). But my subtotal for all four items was $53.96 and for $54 I kind of was bummed. Our leftovers did not get eaten. I think we'll just need to give it a shot in-person next time and perhaps my feelings will be different. Regardless, thanks for dinner New India Gate! read more

Went there for lunch on weekend day when the "Unlimited Thali" was offered. It was TRULY unlimited, everything on the plate, and some more. Varieties on the plate: 1. White rice 2. Roti 3. Yogurt 4. Buttermilk (spiced) 5. Coconut rice 6. Bagara baath (Biriyani with no vegetables) 7. Paneer curry 8. Stewed vegetables in coconut cream 9. Cauliflower curry 10. Fried "far far" chips 11. Potato Bajji 12. Mixed Pakora 13. Sweetened rice pudding Varieties not on the plate, but offered in the meal, regardless: 1. Spiced Lentil powder (for rice) 2. Ghee (melted) 3. Okra chutney 4. Eggplant chutney 5. Lentil dal 6. Sambar (stewed vegetables) 7. Rasam (tomato-based soup) Phew! I hope I got everything correct, because there were so many varieties and good quantities for each, it was very difficult to finish the first offering, leave alone asking for more. But the friendly staff was on hand asking if we needed anything more. And the taste of everything was really good, some even to the point of being called home-cooked instead of commercial taste. That is how much we enjoyed the taste, the South Indian, especially Hyderabadi flavor. Great experience! Went to what was my favorite Indian spot only to find out it had been sold within the last 3 weeks. Very sad because I've been coming here for years . Not sure what happened but the air conditioning was out/off and there were fans inside. We were told the chefs were the same but something was missing. Almost as if the love/soul put in the food was gone. It still tasted pretty good considering! There was also an odd moment where I had to ask for the rice that comes with my meal and it wasn't brought out but they brought it after a few minutes. I used to eat at this place a lot when it was run by a couple of brothers under a different name. Decided I'd check it out after several years of not eating here. Slow Sunday night. Even still service was iffy while the food was good. I had the chicken samosas which I always enjoy, my garlic naan had no garlic on it, they forgot to bring my mango lassi, but the lamb curry was decent enough. I'm so heartbroken. New India Gate was our comfort food. For a decade we ordered it when we wanted to feel full and warm. Through COVID we would order and know full well they'd never mess up our order, never forget anything, always package with care. The food was warming inside and delicious, always the same every time. Every dish was perfect every single time. Now apparently the name has changed and with it the menu and the recipes. And oh my god, I'm so, so so sad to say every single dish we ordered is worse by a large margin. Simple stuff too, this order was just basic and nothing crazy. Aloo paratha? Bad, bland, worse than before. Paneer naan? Chincy, unmelted, cheap and boring. Garlic naan? BLAND, flavorless, weak - nothing like the bold, buttery punch of garlic that New India Gate provided. Chicken vindaloo no longer has big chunks of chicken, instead it's shredded and dry. They no longer let you order 5 levels of heat, it's been simplified down to 3 levels and the hottest level is weak and kind of sad, and the vindaloo itself just had nothing to it. Chicken Tikka Masala - did someone go apeshit with the cardamom and cinnamon? New India Gate's recipe was rich and simple, this is like some culinary school student decided the more herbs the better. Simplicity is king and you missed it in a bit way, everywhere. Even your website is sitting there talking about being fit for royalty, talk about missing the point this should be food for the people and you're froo-frooing it up. I never thought I'd have to search for a replacement for my favorite Indian in the city - at this point I've spent literally in the thousands at this place, but not a dollar more from here on out. If you like it, good for you but I'll never forget what we've lost here. WARNING: seriously I don't know if it was something in the garlic naan or the vindaloo but I bit down on something that gave a loud crunch and realized I CHIPPED MY FUCKING MOLAR on something in this food, and my wife also had a really weird crunchy bite that she managed to spit out. This place is a family owned business (I believe). We have dined in once on Christmas Eve and then ordered to-go on New Years Eve. That's how great it was! I will say, if you are dining in, their fairly slow but don't be afraid to speak up and request what you need. The better option is probably take out. There was a nice assortment of dishes including vegetarian and chicken that all looked amazing. I decided to try everything and was very impressed! The flavors were excellent and surprisingly nothing was too spicy for me. My favorite dishes were the vegetarian masala and the carrots. I loved the garlic naan that is made fresh for each guest and included in the buffet. The dessert was a nice finish to my meal. I had weekday lunch here with a dear friend and everything was solid and on point. When we arrived around 12:15pm, there were 2 other tables seated. There was a buffet table to the right, however, it was empty. I was pretty disappointed that they were not offering lunch buffet. When we were seated, I asked our waiter about buffet offerings and he let me know that they haven't had buffet since the pandemic. Wow! I was misled by all the photos on Yelp, so make sure you give the business a call and don't just go by photos. My buddy ordered vegetable biryani ($13.99) with a side of raita ($2.99) and I ordered the malai kofta ($14.99) with a side of pickles/achar ($1.99). I remember a time when sides like raita and pickles would just come with your dish, but I guess times have changed and we are dealing with inflation. We also ordered a garlic naan ($3.49) to share. All of our dishes were solid and tasty. Food was tasty and exactly as expected. And since it was my buddy's birthday, we decided to splurge and have dessert and the waiter suggested the mango kulfi ($6.99). It was a large portion size and wow this was so delicious! I have never had Indian style mango ice cream and really enjoyed this a lot! Overall, service was very good, food was delicious. We had some for leftovers, but don't expect huge portions here. Our lunch meal came to close to $60 with tax and tip (and a diet coke also). A bit pricey for a lunch meal, but I only do this once in awhile and besides, it was my buddy's birthday! read more
