We tried this for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 17. We went early, around 1730, so no wait for a table (and it's not a huge space). Overall, we liked the sushi we ordered. To start, I ordered the vegetable gyoza, which I found a little bland. My boyfriend ordered the Tom Yam soup, which he liked. For sushi, we ordered eel nigiri (they just call it "sushi"), hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri, and 4 rolls: Philadelphia (smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber), Ocean (tuna, salmon, avocado), Deluxe Rainbow (tuna, yellowtail and asparagus inside; topped w/salmon, tuna, yellowtail and avocado); Flamingo (spicy yellowtail, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, mango, tempura flake w/a soy wrap; topped w/jalapeño miso sauce & chili sauce); and Tuna Lover (tuna and avocado inside, spicy tuna on top, finished with tempura flake, jalapeño and chili sauce). The yellowtail nigiri was good, fresh; and I also liked the Tuna Lover and Flamingo rolls, with the Flamingo being my favorite. My boyfriend ordered the Philly roll: For some reason, cream cheese in sushi always has a funny taste to me (cream cheese belongs on a bagel w/lox!), so I'm giving up on trying these. The sushi was good, but a lot of the rolls seemed very similar, and I feel it's a little pricey. (Glad we had a 10%-off coupon.) After a reservation mishap at one place and being turned away from a couple of other restaurants, before even being able to ask if we could search for a seat at the bar, the hostess at PassionFin immediately accommodated us, going and seeking out a spot at the bar for us, actively going and make room for a spot for two, then leading us to it. The drinks were great, the food was AMAZING, and the prices fair. Varied menu for sure, and the staff was helpful with recommendations and descriptions. I really enjoyed our visit here. My family of 4 went in on a Friday night around 7pm. It was really busy and nearly all the tables were full, fortunately we didn't have to wait and we were seated promptly. Service was excellent, attentive, professional and friendly from the hostess to all the servers. It seemed like the staff truly worked like a team because our server wasn't the only person who cleaned off dishes and or provided us service. The food is good and you get a good amount. For appetizers we got tempura shrimp and ROTI, yum! It was my first time trying Roti and I looooved the sauce and the dish overall. I'd also recommend the shrimp tempura. Kids order Lomein from the kids menu, an order has a generous serving, my two kids could have shared. After a disappointing experience at the Regal Cinema in the Gateway Complex in Gainesville this past Saturday (see separate review) we figured we'd cruise around that maze of a shopping center to see what dining options might be available for an early dinner. As we drove aimlessly around, passing a plethora of typical chain-type bar-&-grills & Tex-Mex spots, we definitely lucked out by finally coming across Passion Fin, which I suddenly recalled having read some recent good Yelp reviews about. So Passion Fin it was, & we are SO glad! Since it was just a hair before 5 p.m., the place was empty apart from two tables & one person dining at the sushi bar, so we were seated immediately. And apparently we really lucked out by arriving so early, because by 5:20 every single seat - including those at the sushi bar - were filled & there were people waiting in line to get in! I don't know if it's like this every night, but lesson learned: if you plan on dining here on the weekend, either arrive early or make sure you make a reservation. The place is relatively small without being overly crowded, & the ambience is nice without being overly dark. A bevy of four very busy sushi chefs work their magic behind a long glass case holding all the raw fish offerings. We started off with two large (22 oz.) Sapporo beers ($7.95 ea.) & decided to share 2 appetizers - the "Fried Calamari" ($7.95) & the "Volcano Shrimp" ($8.50). Calamari consisted of a decent portion (about 10 pcs.) of large greaseless breaded rings served with Sweet Chili Sauce for dipping. Very tender, perfectly cooked, & came with a fresh orchid blossom on the plate. The "Volcano Shrimp" definitely lived up to its name. Think sort of along the lines of what's frequently called Bang Bang Shrimp, but kicked up several notches. As in sinus-clearing notches. Spicy, but addictive. This too came with a fresh orchid blossom. For our entrees we both decided on the "Sashimi Dinner" ($22.95 ea.). Presentation was quite eye-catching for this. Each of us was presented with a large dimpled glass bowl lit from beneath with a colored light, filled with shaved ice, & lined with shredded Daikon radish & fresh Shiso leaves, with other herbage placed upright as a backdrop for the beautifully & expertly arranged slices of raw fish - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, striped bass, escolar, & sea bass - 17 slices in all. All fish was fresh & literally melted in your mouth. And no skimping on the requisite blob of Wasabi paste & sliced pickled ginger - generous amounts of both. One extremely nice touch? A fan of paper-thin slices of cucumber, which made very nice additional palate-cleansers in addition to the pickled ginger. Oh - & of course there was another orchid as well. (If I had known ahead of time & kept the orchids, I'd have had a nice little bouquet to take with me to float in a water bowl at home - lol!) Both our dinners came with either Miso Soup (which I had, & it was delicious) or House Salad (which husband had, & it was the typical Iceberg lettuce & ginger dressing, which husband said was fine). Service was impeccable, if a bit surprisingly attentive. Our young waiter removed our chopsticks from their paper & broke them & handed them to us; poured soy sauce into our sashimi dipping dishes; & opened & poured our beers & even our refills. For a few moments we wondered if he was going to feed us as well - lol! But really, he was extremely generous with his time, especially when you consider that the restaurant was overflowing by now. Even though there were people lined up outside waiting to get in, at no time we were at all rushed or given the impression that we were anything other than welcome guests. Bottom Line: Bill after tax but before tip came to $82.95, which was more than reasonable for the quality & quantity of the food, presentation of same, & the service that we received. I think we've found our new favorite Japanese restaurant & will definitely be back. read more

I decided to try this place since it was new and popular and had good reviews. The interior is gorgeous and modern. The staff were super friendly and on top of the drinks..The sushi itself was lacking. For the price I did not feel that the fish was melt in your mouth enough to justify it. The presentation was very pretty but like I said the salmon and tuna itself did not have enough richness to it. I will be trying this place Again as well as trying some other menu items.
