I stopped to asked a tow truck driver where's the best place for breakfast in town? First thing he said Mother Hubbards. That was good enough for me have some breakfast and a parking lot nap. Mothers looks across at the old Split Pea Andersons relic building Thats another story. Mothers place has been here awhile, 30 plus years its got that look, signage thats faded and to the point. Classic mom & pop, Tired, well worn, and very friendly, with great home cooked meals. The love is here, hard work, and long hours. Its shows too, done when you actually had to make and prepare meals to be cooked when ordered. Riley was "the" worker, her energy shows brightly. Big smile, and good knowledge of the menu and the neighborhood. (She deserves a raise). She covered my questions... whats the most popular item ordered? She replied sweet or savory...good answer. How bout for breakfast not sweet? Oh you'll want to try the "Mess" its a scramble...Ok and let me try the biscuits with a bit of gravy. Good food. We ordered and shared Split Pea Soup and Turkey Burger. My mom added Mushrooms and Avocado on the burger and it tasted delicious. The waitress split the foods in half for us and charge us $3.15 for each item that we split. Service is a little slow due to tmot is a small business. Came here for breakfast over the holiday weekend. Local family-style breakfast spot. We ordered the classic California omelette and the chad's scramble. Both were decent, home-style breakfast dishes, but nothing particularly memorable. The breakfast burrito unfortunately was the weak point for us -- pretty bland and lacking flavor. I'd skip that. Home and hearty breakfast! Don't expect fancy, they get down and dirty. Chicken fried steak has excellent gravy and the steak from steak and Eggs had a perfect medium temp that was requested. Mother Hubbard's was our "go to" stop for many years as we traveled back and forth to SoCal. But today we have since crossed it off our list! I am curious and wonder if there is new ownership. All breakfasts on the menu seemed way overpriced now. Ordering the Early Bird Special "after 8:31am", our meager offering was one egg, two pieces of bacon and one slice of toast|English muffin|biscuit|coffee or tea--and an orange wedge for $14.95. We are from the Bay Area and have been served much more food for that price! Service was good and waitress was very pleasant and welcoming and food was served quickly. We stopped here on way back from a girls trip in Solvang, and so happy we did. The service was warm, welcoming and exceptional. I had the chile verde omelette with hash browns. The chile verde was so flavorful with the perfect amount of spice, the hash browns had a crunchy top layer I gushed about the whole time, and egg was so fluffy. I also order a table waffle that was served with the most delicious honey pecan butter. The girls loved their side of salsa, which we all are usually pretty skeptical of because it's never spicy enough for us but theirs is. Only down side was we ordered a table biscuit and gravy that we never received, but we wouldn't have been able to eat it anyways. If you want mushy hashbrowns, overcooked scrambled eggs, terrible $4 coffee, and ok service-- this is the restaurant for you. We are locals and haven't been here for about 3-years, but we wanted to give them a try again. We were disappointed, and have decided we will not return. The reason we haven't returned is the grumpy, unfriendly waitress, and their awful coffee. We were hoping she had moved on, but no she's still there. She was ok. Not friendly, but not rude this time. The coffee is still terrible. This visit reminded us why we haven't been here in so long. This place used to be noticeably better when the parents owned and ran it. Mediocre food at a high price. We had simple breakfasts and one coffee - no second beverage and we paid $49.71. Eating at home seems to be the better option more and more these days. read more

With great expectations my Bro and I headed to Mother Hubbards for breakfast today. Close to the hamlet of Solvang is the step sister of Buellton and the home of Mother Hubbards. The menu with at least 100 items should have been the first waning. The second was an almost empty restaurant at 7:46 am. It's a locals place but zip people. Now if they could deliver on the food outlined on the menu it would be a different story. Cute cafe tastefully inviting. We opted for minced ham with scrambled eggs, toast and hash browns. Coffee. Let's start with the coffee-- weak dishwater at best not worth $4.00. Didn't drink mine. The eggs--Luke warm overcooked and bland. Ham sprinkled throughout almost an afterthought. Toast, white and not sourdough was slathered in drippy butter. The hash browns felt like leftover from yesterday. Not warm and soft. For $60 out the door this was a disaster. Too bad. Like with any road trip, hunger made us yelped up a place for food. This got my attention because I was searching for a family friendly place that served hearty meals. The inside was spacious with an older western theme and decorated with a bunch of witty signs and sayings. We came for a late lunch and were met with amazing hospitality. I felt bad for the waitress because she was this older lady who singlehandedly took care of all the tables. She was friendly and even chatted up the kids. I got a Monterey sandwich on rye bread with a side of fruit. It was fresh and hit the spot. I will say their fruit was on the soggy and mushy side. Other than that, everyone enjoyed their meal and we left satisfied. We finished eating after their closing time and they never rushed us or anything. The crowning blow was that the charges for the breakfast omelettes were more than the menu stated and they added a 3% fee for using a credit card. Turns out the coffee was very weak, the English muffin was not crispy, the hash browns (ordered crispy) tasted like reheated from yesterday and the diced ham and scrambled eggs were lukewarm and had no hint of being cooked in butter. Went early on a Sunday morning for breakfast. There was plenty of self parking & no wait. The staff were very friendly and worked great as a team to take care of you. There seemed to be plenty of regulars there and a comfy family atmosphere. The menu has plenty of breakfast & lunch options. I'm still getting used to California prices but the portions you get at 'Ma Hubbs' are worth the price! My parents got early bird specials and enjoyed their eggs, bacon, pancakes, & biscuits. I got the Buellton Scramble that is bacon, onion, tomatoes, & scrambled eggs served with home fries or hash browns & two biscuits. We could not finish our plates but enjoyed our food. They do have a couple of tables outside for seating. Dogs are welcome outside. It was a little chilly and I saw one of the waitresses go get her sweater and put it on the chair so it'd be warmer for a little girl to sit on. Unfortunately we don't see those acts of simple kindness enough these days. I enjoyed their family story about the restaurant on their menu. We ordered through a delivery service to our hotel. The food didn't take long however so many things went wrong. I ordered poached eggs but they were scrambled, my plate was also supposed to come with potatoes but didn't, the hash browns were gross and my toast had hair on it. This is a family owned restaurant and they treat everyone there as family! It's a very cute place on Avenue of Flags that is far less expensive than a more famous nearby neighbor. GETTING HERE: Located across the way (Avenue of the Flags) from Pea Soup Andersen's in Buelleton. REVIEW: GREAT breakfast place; definitely recommend! I love the vibe and kitchen type décor of this restaurant. Very comfy and homey. Ordering our breakfast was as usual and to be expected; on this most recent visit the process of payment was different. Only different than expected, not surprising as most all other restaurants seem to be going to the way of the "app to pay". Biscuits and gravy, check check! Good and great. Sadly, I don't know much of its history (as reading other reviews) and it appears to have declined. However, I am happy to share that our visits were pleasant and our food was served hot and was very flavorful (esp. the gravy). I could agree with other Yelpers that the hostess and staff could have maybe benefited from an attitude tune up - but I came to enjoy good food (thankfully) with my guest. My friend found this place on yelp so we wanted to come check it out. I told my friend there's so many things on the menu so that means that most of everything is not fresh. But we wanted to give it a chance. The only thing on the menu that was fresh was a corn beef so we ordered it. It literally said homemade on the menu. But I'd like to start off as when I first walked in. Walked in there was probably about a half dozen tables. We waited for a good five minutes before anyone acknowledged us, and there was a sign that says please wait to be seated. After realizing there is only one server in the whole restaurant, we decided to be a little more patient. After being seated, four other tables came in one after another. She took our order and we decided to split the corn beef and hash. My friend told her we're just gonna share the plate. She then brings out everything cut in half with all these plates, which we did not want. not really tentative because she's really busy, but still the service was pretty good. I've had corn beef all over the country and never as bad as this one. It wasn't even corn beef. It literally looked like dog food and it didn't even taste like meat, we both couldn't figure out what it was. Everything came out lukewarm, nothing was hot. To top it off they don't have real butter, they use margarine. Thought that was kinda odd for a breakfast place. Kind of pricey for the quality. This is probably the worst breakfast place I've ever experienced. Then she charged us a split charge. I have all the pictures to prove it. We still gave her a 22% tip. Because she worked really hard and it's not her fault that the food sucks.. and to be honest the only reason why we went there because Ellie was close due to they were repaving the roads. Love this place. They have an early bird special that you can view online. If you stay at the Pea Soup Anderson they offer you an additional discount if you bring the discount book/coupon with you. Service is great and the ladies there are always pleasant and attentive to you especially if when you get there before the rush which I would say starts around 9:30am. I'm a local and have gone to this restaurant many times over the years. But the other day ordered a side salad for $7.25 per menu that came in a small soup bowl that was lettuce, cheese and two old looking sliced tomatoes. However, I wouldn't have posted this negative review for that explaination. My post relates to the bill charging $8.35, a difference from the menu price. When I requested the bill be updated, there was no one in charge to make the change. When I indicated I wouldn't pay the difference. The young girl waitress stated she will call the cops if I don't pay. At this point, I let her know this was illegal consumer fraud and that I would love to talk to the police. All of the sudden someone with authority is available. Once I explained the situation, he handled it well by not charging me. But my question is, how is this restaurant getting away with this? read more

My kids and I ate here yesterday only because the Anderson Inn recommended it. I wanted to try the famous pea soup, but the restaurant closed and Mother Hubbard's apparently had the recipe. When entering the restaurant it smelled funny. I thought maybe it was a cleaner. I ordered the pea soup which had, parm cheese, ham and croutons on the side. Even with all the added flavor the soup was still bland and quite disappointing. I ordered the kids meal chicken strips for my daughter while holding the kids menu and pointing to it. My son ordered the onion rings which were soggy and greasy. When I receive the bill the chicken strips were $21.99. When I told the waitress there was a mistake her response was " oh I gave you the adult meal because your daughter looked hungry". It meal was 3 tiny chicken strips and a leaf of lettuce with a carrot slice. She didn't adjust the bill, so I did not leave a tip. When we arrive in Solvang shortly after I mentioned the restaurant to a local at the tourist info. and she even said that Mother Hubbard's was not a good place to eat. Definitely not worth the money. The sad thing is that everyone in there was elderly. Probably locals that don't have many dining options. ** I don't know how anyone would rate this dump with 5 starts. Worst breakfast ever. Who the heck screws up breakfast, really!! We were a party of 4. Locals for many years. Waitress was rather short tempered. Toast was not even toasted. Biscuit was ready to go in the oven not ready to be served. Par cooked at best. Things were left off from out order but by this time we were ready to call it a wash. They need new cooks in the kitchen who care about what they put on a plate. Worst thing was the raw fatty limp bacon. When I sent it back they had dropped it in the deep fryer. I don't like to give bad reviews and i almost never do but for starters, the coffee creamers were bad and smelled like mold and when I asked the server for a new cup of coffee she was very nasty. There was also no sugar on the table so after that I gave up on drinking the coffee which I really needed since we stopped here on our way to Hearst Castle. The omelette was tasty with fresh vegetables which is the only reason I am not giving this place one star. The place does have some cute decorations so perhaps it was just an off day but we won't be back. read more
