GETTING HERE: Located in Solvang, on the main drag through the city. Per their website, they are on the north side of Mission Drive between 4th Place and 5th Street. Parking can be ridiculous, just FYI. I would probably recommend looking straight off for a public parking lot if you're headed here. To maximize your time. REVIEW: First-timers. Sadly, we were completely underwhelmed. Very saddened by this. But, as is my motto, we will give them one more try as hoping this was a one-off. Food: The pancakes were OK? I mean, I didn't see the hype. Again, marking this up to the one-off visit, hopefully. They were good, of course, but didn't seem any different than from other restaurants. We ordered eggs over-medium, and they were runny. But, nothing terribly major. Service: Now, here's the bad news. Our service was horrid. Just horrid. But, as we observed the other customers, their service was on point. Servers and wait staff were hustling, just not for us. It was so unnerving. Finally, who I can only assume was a lead/manager, came to greet us and take our order. She apologized profusely and stated that our server had gotten held up with something. She was pretty helpful, thankfully, but then it was another server who delivered our food and she. did. not. even. say. boo. to. us. Ambiance: It's very quaint, I love it. Very Solvang-rich. Overall, it was a solid 2.5 visit, rounding up because Solvang. Hopefully, will update soon with better experience.
Long wait but worth it! Visited on a Saturday for some late morning breakfast. I expected it to be busy so we had about a 45 minute wait. Once seated we were served quickly and the servers were on top of things. Considering how busy it was everyone was nice and we were never waiting long to be helped. The dining room feels like an old house which I just love. We both got the California special omelette with bacon and Danish sausage on the side. The omelette's were so good, fluffy, big, lots of flavors. The pico and ranchero sauce were perfect on top. The bacon was crispy and thick, the Danish sausage was delicious but could have been a bit warmer. We also got mimosas which were so fresh, they use fresh squeezed orange juice made right there in the dining room. I'd go back just for the orange juice alone! All in all a great dining experience before shopping around town. The meal hit the spot and was worth the wait.
It's a nice place to stop because it's nostalgic. The flavor is okay. Pancakes and waffles are awesome! Needed to add salt and pepper to eggs. The waitress was great attentive as much as she could. It's busy place definitely need to get there early extremely early to not have to wait 45min especially with an infant. The place is loud but not enough to yell over each other but loud. I want to say everytime I've been inside due to weather but outside may be different. Overall I suggest to try on own.
Rounded up to 3.75 stars. We arrived to Paula's Pancake House on mother's Day morning at around 8:30am (they open at 7) and we were told it was a 45 minute wait. It's not a very big place and there isn't really much space to wait but people did start forming a line outside waiting to put their name down. You put your name down on a list and are told to return around a specific time frame. They do not offer texting when your place is open so you can't really travel very far. Service: The service there was fair. Understandably so, it was busy and our server didn't come around to us often while we ate. But she was kind and accommodating to our specific dietary needs (without making any faces). Food: so we came with a party of 7 so they accommodated us by joining two tables together. The food we had was okay. My favorite thing there was definitely the danish sausage which was cooked perfectly and had the perfect snap and bite to it. My sister in law said it was too gamey for her but I believe that is just a personal preference. The sausage was well cooked. The danish pancakes were just alright.... I like to think of them more like a crepe since they are relatively thin. We got ours with blueberries and the blueberries were also cooked well. It was lacking in flavor is all I can describe it. The scrambled eggs has absolutely zero salt. I believe they just cooked the eggs and brought it out. Overall I would say this place was underwhelming and I could not for the life of me understand why it gets so jam-packed. In my humble opinion. I think there just aren't that many options of full menu restaurants in Solvang and a lot of bakeries instead. I would come back here again just for the danish sausage since it was quite delicious but next time I'll try another menu item.
I will admit this place was quite good. I came for lunch but ordered the Danish pancake with blueberries because why not? Breakfast for lunch, right? Anyways, it was my first time trying Danish pancakes and I enjoyed it! The pancake was thin, almost crepe like. The fruit added that nice touch of berry sweetness to it. While large, I devoured this like there was no tomorrow. After my visit here, I keep thinking about what a wonderful meal I had. The restaurant has a fun vibe and fits perfectly with the Danish town feel.
First time at Paula's, the Danish pancake stood out right away. It was large and thin, almost crepe like, but packed with flavor. It was genuinely delicious, my son loved it and we finished it quickly. The eggs and sausage on the side were solid as well. We also ordered the country fried steak, which was just as good. Crispy, flavorful, and satisfying without feeling overly heavy. Parking takes a little effort. Street spots can be hit or miss, but there is public parking nearby. The location is also super convenient if you're planning to stop by the Olesons. Service was friendly, and the whole experience felt immersive, like stepping into a small piece of Danish culture.
I was inspired to come here after seeing it on a few different social media channels. I was camping a few miles away from here and decided to stop by before heading home. I got here around 8AM on a Thursday and there was already a line. Since I was solo, I sat at the counter. Service was great. All the waitresses were very attentive and friendly. The Danish pancakes were absolutely delicious! Kinda sucks I paid $20 for 2 pancakes and a cup of coffee. Nevertheless, I was very happy with my meal and I'd absolutely come back in the future.
Read this was the place to eat breakfast if in Solvang. It didn't disappoint. Delicious breakfast. The Dutch pancakes are kinda like crepes. They were good. The sausage was sort of like a mild Italian sausage. Early in the morning they were already busy but we got there early enough to be seated right away. The service was good and friendly. The setting was nice. Made you really feel that Dutch heritage. Defiantly give this spot a try. If you're wondering why 4 stars instead of 5, it's mainly because overall it was a typical regular breakfast. That's literally the only reason. But the place is great! Get there early because when my wife and I left and walked around a little bit there was a crowd outside waiting to be seated. They get busy fast!
Had to come here to try the danish pancakes heard this was the place to go We went on a Saturday morning it was a bit busy waited to be seated about 15 min sat inside Our waitress was awesome very friendly and helpful We went over the menu and ordered our food It came out about 15 min later and presentation was great everything looked delicious we really enjoyed our danish pancakes and breakfast Price was great serving size was good would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone coming to Solvang
I'm a big fan of this location! The vibe is very old-school, and you can really taste the Solvang spirit in their food. It's wonderful. I went with my best friend, and he's extremely picky about his breakfast, but he truly loved the breakfast here. They made the eggs perfectly! He's still trying to recreate them at home, but he can't get them to taste the same lol. The breakfast here is really good. I got the Danish pancakes and they were so good! I was hesitant because I usually love regular pancakes, but these were even better, nice and airy, not too thick, and with just enough flavor to make you happy. We also got their mimosa special for two. They gave us these personal champagne bottles, which was so cute! We got to pop them open ourselves and pour them. It made the whole experience feel a little extra fun. The only reason I'm docking a star is because they don't accept reservations, and the wait time is at least an hour outside ( we waited an hour an 15 mins) in the blazing sun. The hostess managing the waitlist was also pretty crabby. At one point she closed the waitlist because there were too many people waiting for a seat. That said, once we were inside, the service was polite and the food came out quickly. We honestly spent way longer waiting outside than we did actually sitting down and eating, which was a little annoying. But overall, the food is top notch and definitely worth trying if you're in the area.

This is such a cute place. The food is very yummy. I loved my danish pancake with strawberries. I got the combo which comes with eggs and bacon...the eggs are so fresh tasting and the bacon is thick. The staff are quick too, our food came out in 10 minutes or less. read more
The food was great! Real Danish pancakes which was what I was craving. I ate before I could snap a proper food picture. I was starving and it looked so appetizing. The pancake was HUGE. Lots of seating with your choice of indoor and outdoor. The service was quick and our server was kind. We showed up 20 minutes before closing and they still quickly and kindly accommodated us. The bathroom was clean and smelled of bleach, which made me feel good and have confidence that the bathroom is clean. We sat outdoors so there was one annoying fly that wouldn't leave us alone. Paula's Pancake House is a popular family owned diner serving American and Danish breakfast and lunch. It is the town's original pancake house. They're located in the heart of Solvang, CA. They serve vast food items from omelettes to pancakes to waffles. They open as early as 7 am and crowd already lined up. I had a Paula's combo pancakes x eggs x OJ. All were good. Danish Pancakes were thin, wide and flat with apple cinnamon on top. And it's not overwhelming like your typical thick buttermilk pancakes from iHOP or Dennys. Service was fast. Staff were affable and competent. Atmosphere has that old diner vibe. Prices were very reasonable. One con about this place was that there were flies hovering everywhere. I had to whoosh them every time. I guess even amongst local flies this pancake house is popular. lol. Overall, it's a modest diner that serve nice breakfast. My first time here and the wait time was well worth it! I'm not sure how busy the restaurant is on a regular basis but, I spent Labor Day weekend in Solvang and Paula's Pancake House was crowded! Do not let that deter you..Breakfast or lunch at Paula's is a must. The restaurant definitely has an at home, comfortable atmosphere. It's clean, and very welcoming. You can also opt to be seated in their patio as well. I ordered their Danish Pancake Breakfast Combo; Eggs, Danish Sausage and a thin Danish Pancake topped off with fresh Strawberries. The portion served is very generous. It's filling, flavorful, the strawberries were fresh, the sausage and pancake were delish and it was served hot. Our waitress was nothing short from amazing!! She was friendly and she did not miss a beat. We had absolutely no hiccups with our orders or drinks. She really made our experience at Paula's feel like we were visiting family. This time around the waitlist was short for a Friday brunch. We waited around 15 minutes from time we put our name on the list until we got seated. There was lots of staff working so it felt like they were on top of the crowds and provided good service throughout our meal. As usual the pancakes and waffles were big portions and have not disappointed. My Colette came with danish sausages and mushrooms this time. The sausages were sweeter than the turkey ones rated before. The side of has browns was nice and crunchy and preferred it over the biscuit which wasn't very flaky. We were excited to try this place but it was a bit disappointing. There was a wait and it was super crowded so expectations were high especially for breakfast/brunch type foods. I got the French toast and it looked really pretty but tasted a bit off. It was overly eggy and also looks like it came on sourdough bread which is odd for French toast in my opinion. It was also super chewy. We got the sandwich with fries and the fries tasted like they had been sitting out for a while or something. This is a cute place with cute seating but not sure I'd come back for the food. read more
Been here a few times now and it's always on and popping. Getting a table for weekend brunch can be a bit of a wait, but weekdays average something like 10-15 minutes. Parking is your usual toss-up. This time I was smart and got a hotel nearby, so we saved ourselves the frustration and walked. Like many places in Solvang, they have a signature dish - the Danish pancakes. Tried these a few times and I'm not sure these are for me. They're a little dense and the flavor is underwhelming. When paired with less than ripe fruit, it's a pass for me. Eggs are always good, but I did notice that the yolks are very light and therefore not as umami as I'm used to. It was kind of like... egg lite? The hash browns were alright, but again, nothing really to them. Biscuit and toast are okay. The turkey sausage was a huge hit with the kiddo, tho. Got a few lunch sandos for the rest of the party, which seemed to go over well. They tried the pastrami with cheese and chile, the grilled chicken with jack cheese, and had some fries. I think maybe that's the way to go if you are brunchin' - somebody gets something eggy, somebody gets something sandwichy, and you marry the two and dip your fries in runny egg yolk and ketchup. Yummmmmm! Coffee is coffee is coffee. Lattes are served in fancy cups with a little cookie, which is a nice bonus. Nothing outstanding in terms of flavor or brew, but it does the job. Price is pretty much like every other casual breakfast joint, which is to say it's fair for the food. Just wish the food was slightly more exciting. What really sucks is the slow service because they're perpetually understaffed. Of all the times we've come here, weekend or weekday, they never have enough people! I feel so bad for the servers because they seat a full house and then they're scrambling to keep up. It might bother some people, but I really like that there are birds on the outside patio just hanging around. You shouldn't feed them, but they'll snatch up your crumbs in an instant. You can tell they're used to people because they have no fear and no shame. They'll grab something off your table the moment you stand up. I think it's hilarious. Go birds! Wish there were less flies outside but it's clear the birds are used to getting their snacks from the restaurant. Overall, Paula's is worth trying at least once if you've in Solvang so you can form your own opinion. But if you're short on time and want a unique place to dine, I would skip it and hit up some of the other restaurants that have less wait and more Danish pizzazz. read more

This is a cute diner style restaurant with Danish pancakes. The food and ambiance was great. The pancake in the photos look big but they're light and thinner so I wouldn't recommend for an adult to share. Highly recommend adding fruit, I had the apples and I enjoyed it a lot. The price was reasonable and the service was fast & good. The wait can be a bit long especially morning time when we went but it was worth it. A must-try when in solvang! read more

FOOD: The food here was good, nothing spectacular, but good. Some of the food seemed a little bland for my taste. I had the Tuna sandwich and the Tuna was good, but lacked a little salt. We ordered the Danish pancake for the table and it was good. The pancake was soft and light and fluffy. SERVICE: The service was wonderful! Carrie was our server and she was so friendly and nice and really made us feel welcome and taken care of. AMBIANCE: It's a cute restaurant with seating inside and outside. Very cozy feel. During our first visit to Solvang, my mom and I ate here on a sunny Saturday for lunch. Since there were two of us, we inquired about the wait time and were surprisingly offered two seats at the counter. We immediately grabbed the opportunity and not miss out on the delicious pancakes at this cozy restaurant. The ambiance gives homage to their Danish roots and unique Danish cuisine and architecture. We ordered our individual plates of Pancakes with Danish Sausage and Pancakes with strawberries. Our orders were delivered to our counter within 15 minutes. The presentation is phenomenal with the ingredients on top, with a few sprinkles of powdered sugar. The pancakes may look thin but they are fluffy, moist and delicious. The strawberries are in season and are perfectly sweet. The Danish sausage is tender and did not disappoint. I am also fond of their maple syrup. For folks who are dining as a group, please be sure to arrive extra early and expect a wait time. And depending on the volume of customers at a certain time, some pairs may find their luck to be immediately seated. Our family never misses the opportunity to have breakfast at Paula's. It's very, very busy on weekends and my recommendation is to have someone go earlier and put in your name on the waitlist, it pretty much anytime after they open you will have to wait. And it's worth it. The danish pancakes are quite good, but their buttermilk pancakes are every bit as good and their eggs Benedict is a very delicious dish as well. I've never had anything that wasn't exceptionally good. There is outdoor seating is good during the warm, it can be a little chilly at other times. They pack as many people as possible inside, so it can seem a little claustrophobic at times. Service has consistently been excellent over the decades that I've been going here. read more

Is this maybe a tourist trap? Sure. Is it still worth it? I'd say so. The lines here get long, but the turnaround is quick. You can't really take a stroll around town while you wait because they call people out by name at the front, but there are a couple stores next door to explore. The space is rustic and has a more classic diner/cafe feel. We were sat inside and there's a small fly issue, but not enough to be a major problem. I ordered the Danish Pancake Combination with sausage and two over-easy eggs. The food comes out quickly, maybe 5-10 after ordering. The pancakes were much thinner than I was expecting, slightly thicker than a crepe but still crispy on the edges. They come dusted with powdered sugar and a small container of maple syrup on the side. The other parts of the meal are as expected and really filled out the meal. I don't think the meal would've been that filling if I had only ordered the pancakes. read more
I had breakfast here one morning. We arrived to an outdoor kiosk with several people waiting. We waited about 20 minutes for a party of four. We wanted to sit inside but the first available was a table outside. We were seated at a plastic table with plastic chairs with umbrellas covering most of the patio. We all ordered breakfast crepes with a variety of different fruit toppings. While we were eating these very brave birds were flying around trying to get food scraps. In the process of that one of the neighboring tables got pooped on. The food was good and it didn't take long to receive after ordering. I was hoping that the fruit would have some sort of glaze on it but it did not. We all enjoyed the food. The service was good as well. Came here with friends and knew there was a way which was about 45 minutes. We just went to the little touristy shop while we waited. We sat on the patio for food. Definitely got the Danish pancake and Danish sausages along with regular pancakes and eggs with cheese. Oro is a great experience. Nothing that's wowing, but it's a great breakfast spot and we're tourist. We do touristy things. No complaints at all. read more

Paula's was definitely enjoyable and provided cute ambience in the town of Solvang. The eggs and bacon were standard, nothing to write home about. The biscuit was lovely as well as the hasbrowns. The strawberries were definitely a little slimy so don't expect freshly cut fruit for your meals. Other than that, it was a nice feel-good breakfast. Service was okay, not super friendly but definitely not rude either. Just simply seemed like the waitress couldn't care less. read more

Long lines even at 10am on a Thursday and they take reservations in person only so prepare for a 30 minute wait if you're not there earlier. Nice staff and the food came out within 5 minutes. Food was delicious and very efficient. No complaints on how fast the food came out. Very noisy diner cafe vibes inside but the outdoor patio was cute and dog friendly. I came here as I heard this place is good and know for its food. The service was fast and the wait was not that long despite it being popular. Great menu selection. Parking is on the street. Make sure you get got there early to get a spot because it does get packed quick. I got the Danish pancake combo with Danish sausage, sunny-side up eggs, and strawberries on top of the pancakes. Everything was amazing. And tasted absolutely delicious. The pancakes were thin, buttery, and had those crispy edges. Strawberries were fresh, not the syrupy canned stuff. The sausage had a little snap to it and real flavor different from the regular breakfast sausage you get at most places. Eggs were cooked perfectly, still runny in the middle without being slimy. Just an overall great breakfast. The staff was attentive and quick. The ambiance was great, it was like an old Danish house setting feel to it. This is a must stop for breakfast when in town. read more

Food was great - loved the Danish pancakes. Service wasn't as expected. She brought me pancakes without the whipped cream and strawberries which is the Paula's Special. She brought back the same plate with them added. Not sure if that would be the quantity if originally correct, plus now they are definitely cooled. Also, another waitress may have suggested that my daughter's two eggs just be added to my plate order and we would get bacon or sausage too for "free." Instead $7 for two scrambled eggs. I didn't think of it since originally my daughter wasn't ordering anything. I get this a tourist town and we are a revolving door of faces but I still hope for good service. Worth the wait. Huge menu that makes for some tough choices -- but those are good problems. I could not resist trying the Danish pancakes here. I had them with a couple eggs and my choice of meat -- Solvang Sausage (Medisterpølse). Let's unpack all that: The Danish pancakes are light and thin and you get two. That's actually plenty when you also get a couple eggs (I went with over easy), plus the Solvang style sausage. Powdered sugar and butter plus syrup comes with the pancakes. I didn't need the butter but the syrup was a key element to lock down the flimsy cakes and bolster the sweetness. Love. The eggs were fine -perfectly cooked and flavorful. Currently there is a surcharge for eggs or anything that includes eggs (yes, pancakes). Given the state of egg prices and unstable supply, it seems fair. The Medisterpølse (Danish style sausage) is recommended, too. Solid flavor, a bit of spice and a big size all add up to a win. This is not at all like a Portuguese sausage (Linguiça) that I've had (and not loved) in a completely different city. So, now when I haven't had or even heard of a sausage, I need to ask questions, go slow, and hope they offer a taste. They did that at Paula's. Finally, a nod to the coffee. Though Paula's may appear to be just a humble diner (with accompanying average diner coffee), I found the coffee here to have much more flavor than most places. Service was good, and the food came out in under five minutes. The one thing that I wasn't loving was when someone ordered a milkshake and. a guy was helping get the hard frozen ice cream scooped out of the big containers. He was actually using his bare hands to pull it out of the scooper and box. Sitting at the counter, you kind of see everything. Absolutely recommend Paula's. read more

Awesome service, and good food! I ordered the Solang Danish-Style Sausage and Eggs (Medisterpolse). It comes with sausage, eggs, hash browns, and toast. The sausage is a good, mellow flavor. The eggs and hash browns were cooked perfectly. Loved the toast with orange marmalade! The coffee was good as well, smooth tasting. I really enjoyed the service! Our server, Eva was fantastic!! She made the dining experience fun. Great personality and fast. The whole staff comes together when serving as well, like a team. The ambiance was fun. They have patio seating but wanted to enjoy the inside for breakfast. Lots of cute Danish styling, from the doiley curtains to the tables and decor. read more

I'd give it a 3.5. Service is great and our food came out super quick. Unfortunately the quality is meh. My eggs were super overcooked and the syrup was almost clear... so definitely not anywhere close to real maple syrup. $50 for 2 coffees and 2 breakfasts seems steep for the quality. read more

Highly highly recommend this place! The food was delicious and the service SUPER fast!! I don't think I have received my food this fast at any breakfast place :) it was fast but still tasty- not careless. The hash browns were perfectly crispy, eggs done according to order and Danish pancakes were an absolute treat. Coffee was warm and the staff was really friendly! Additionally- I accidentally left my wallet when we walked out and the server ran behind me to hand it over! This was the perfect place to wrap up our Solvang stay. read more

Yes this is a dog friendly restaurant. Not too sure if they offer food for dogs but they did provide my dog a bowl of water.

No reservation needed, you're added to the list when you arrive and seated shortly after.

Typical of most restaurants in the area, I don't think they have any vegan hot entrees. However, you can order a salad or a fruit bowl.

Are the pancakes worth a 1.5 hr wait?
I would say not worth 1.5 hour wait, just get there early in the morning before the wait!

The outdoor dining was, not sure about the indoor dining? Support them as best we can. Call them if you're not sure!

How early should one go to avoid the hour + wait on a weekend?
We were there last Spring, showed up about at about 7 am on a Saturday, and had no wait. Glad we went; if you go, get the sausages.
