The average price for a respectable New York city burger and fries thus far has been a painful $27.58, so it was refreshing to see a $17.50 price point at Paul's Da Burger for the great american combo. I've hit mostly the most popular spots so far, but a passionate minority have been in my DMs RIDING for Paul's in the East Village. I arrived and set foot into an ambiance that felt like a time capsule to the mid 90s: Checkered table cloths, a thick vizio TV playing NY Giants highlights on loop, vintage posters littering the walls, and signs that read "You don't get it your way. You take it my way, or you don't get a damn thing." It's a remembrance of the east village before androgynous transplants with fine line tattoos and black loafers took over. The nostalgic ambiance had me ready to pick up the Nintendo 64 sticks and play Ocarina of Time. I sat down, put my order in for an American Cheeseburger with fries that ran $17.50, and pulled out my trusty scale from a past life to weigh this thing. It came in at a whopping 14oz, which makes it the heaviest burger we've had yet. You also get a healthy portion of 8.3 oz of fries. As much as I would have loved this thing to go crazy, it's not competing with the high level burgers. The beef is fresh ground sirloin and was juicy, but was hardly seasoned. The bun was uninspired and disintegrated after a few bites, and it was just sloppy to eat overall. 6.3/10 for me. However I will say, sometimes I do want a cheap burger in a no frills environment when I'm battling a hangover. It helps me reset and get back to myself. Deluxe Mushroom Burger. $20.25. Tasty mushrooms and juicy large patty but don't bother with deluxe (fries are only alright)

I went to this quirky little burger place a couple of months ago. The staff were friendly, and it seemed like a bunch of the other people eating there were regulars, similar to the similarly old-school but very different B+H Dairy a couple of doors down. While the burgers are pretty big, the price point is a bit high for a burger, especially when it comes to adding accompaniments (I've honestly never heard of any place charging more for lettuce, for instance.) I didn't bother with a drink and ordered a medium rare Deluxe Mushroom Burger, with the deluxe option adding lettuce and tomato on the side, along with fries. I also asked for pickles. In general, the deluxe option is $7 more. The burger is listed as "smothered with mushrooms," and was $20.25 for the deluxe option. The burger itself was the size of those you can find at many diners, but compared to those diners, it was much juicier, though maybe it could have used a little more salt. The bun eventually fell apart from the juiciness of the burger, and there is a kaiser roll option for a dollar more, but I wouldn't bother. The mushrooms were a bit different from the usual ones on burgers, which I was happy about. They were meaty, and there was indeed a whole lot of them, so the add-on was worth it. The fries were pretty standard, with a good amount of crispiness, and were salty enough. For the price, I wouldn't bother getting the deluxe version next time. The burger was juicy enough that the tomato and lettuce weren't necessary, while the fries weren't good enough on their own that I would pay $7 more just for them and the other toppings. For a bit over $14 before tax and tip, I would definitely get it again. However, if I wanted to pay over $20 for a burger, I'd rather stop at other places that also offer cheese or much better fries, such as my favorite burger at Wollensky's Grill, or somewhere else. I might also try their smash burger next time, which I think was $8.50 or a dollar more. I can see why they've been in business for a while, though similar to other spots serving junkier food, I probably won't be back for a while.

Recently, a friend was hosting a gathering for their birthday at the Otto's Shrunken Head bar as he was a big fan of the place and he wished to convene with close friends. When he pointed out that he was planning on some dinner at Paul's da Burger Joint before the bar I asked if I could join in on that since I had not been here in a number of years. In addition to that I was even more surprised that I had not managed to offer up a Yelp about any of the past experiences so here we are. For the unaware, Paul's is a burger joint off of Saint Mark's Place on 2nd Avenue and while it might seem like a hole in the wall, its a place that you surely want to drop into should you be craving a burger or happen to be visiting our neck of the woods and are on the carnivorous side. There is sufficient seating to relax in and while I am not 100% certain I think that you can also sit at the counter if there is a need for that. There is some Rock and Roll themed decor and the whole place smells like the grill which might annoy some but I honestly enjoy it. I kept my order simple with a Bacon Cheeseburger and a side of Fries. These burgers are sizable and this would sustain me for the time that was to be spent in Otto's. I don't drink so I wasn't worried about needing something substantial in my stomach before that part of the fun. My friend and I chatted comics and films while we ate and enjoyed the Punk Rock and Metal that was playing over the speakers. Though my buddy and I were each covering our own orders, the policy of Paul's is one check per table so I'd have to Venmo him my amount afterwards since I was strapped for hand cash at the time. Lately I've been using Google Pay for everything. I always recommend this place to my fellow carnivores and especially since there is a fun hamburger photo op out in the front of the restaurant. Thanks Paul's, I will not be taking years to get back there again.

Good servers, good decor, good food. I got the cheeseburger Deluxe and my friend got the El Paso Burger Deluxe. Both were good in a very classic, greasy, juicy American diner burger way. And I really want to emphasize, GREASY and JUICY. The bottom bun was completely soaked through with the juice and grease of the Patty. The patty itself tasted high quality but could have used a bit more salt. Additionally, I wish that the burgers came with a bit more fries. Even though the burger was quite large, I found myself eating through the fries fairly quickly. Despite the large portions, it was pretty expensive. Paying $17.50 for a burger with fries is a bit hard to swallow especially with tax and tip surely bringing the charge to over 20 dollars.

This is Da Burger joint that you must visit. It's a classic NYC establishment off St Marks in the East Village with retro interior and a cow at the counter that says THIS IS NOT BURGER KING. I was a little overwhelmed by the menu. They list a whole page of burgers with every topping possible. And two rows of prices - regular and deluxe. It's annoying that they charge for basics like lettuce tomato onion. Apparently pickles are free though lol. It's one of those menus that you can end up with a $20 burger accidentally. I paid $15 for a Pepper Jack cheeseburger medium done with lettuce tomato and pickles. Only after did I see a smash burger for 8.99 on the board menu. I was looking for a quick in and out situation but the burger I ordered would've been a better for dining in. Noted! I got the burger to go and paid cash because they charge a fee for credit cards.. let's get with the times. When I was down the block I couldn't wait and took a giant bite out of the burger. It was super juicy and the patty was thick. The meat to bread ratio was impressive. The patty isn't seasoned but there's salt and pepper in the bag which I didn't bother with. Great fcking burger!! I kept eating it and it wasn't getting smaller.. Excited to try the smash burger next time.

Really expensive bad burger with no atmosphere. I'm a big fan of hole-in-the-wall joints but if you have no ambiance, you have to have good food or good prices. You can't charge $17 for an unseasoned, bland, lumpy burger and 10 steak fries. Also, bun was cold.

Had the pleasure of visiting Paul's Da Burger joint. We had a great server who took our order quickly and the food came pretty fast. The burgers were so big. The food was delicious. Love the quirky signs and the old school style of the restaurant.

A traditional no-frills burger spot with a good selection of beers. Burger and fries are up to standard at a pretty good price

    Eastsider Burger Deluxe Gravy Fries
    Austin L.

The burgers here were just alright. I wouldn't say it's a bad burger, but it's not my favorite in NYC for sure. The burger itself is pretty thick and I personally like a thin cut of beef, but if you like big meaty burgers then you may like it! However, the bottom bun got soggy extremely quick and fell apart the moment I picked up the burger. This was due to the heavy greasy liquid in such a massive patty size. The burger was also frozen and could have used some more seasoning. As for the fries, they are your standard fries, so you can't really go wrong here! The gravy on the fries added a nice savory flavor and the fries itself were crispy and airy. I asked for a side of chipotle mayo to add flavor to my burger, but I found the mayo to be too runny, as if some water was added to it. I will say the service is amazing. The servers and chefs are so friendly and accommodating and that made the experience nice! The interior also makes you feel like you're inside of an 80s diner and I enjoyed that ambiance. I would say if you're looking for a quick burger fix that will satisfy a craving, give Paul's a try, but in general, I don't think I'd be back for a burger. The fries are great though! Also, if you do come here, get an ice cream soda. The coke float was the perfect sweet beverage to go with a greasy burger.

Super slow when I was there and service was good (I got there at like 5pm). The burgers need more seasoning otherwise, good food.

We were thrilled to find two seats at the end of the bar when we arrived. As luck would have it, the two gentlemen next to us eventually left, allowing us to slide over and enjoy an even better view of the TV for the rest of the game. I started with a Tito's and club soda, but unfortunately, something seemed off--perhaps the club soda was flat. The drink just wasn't good. To their credit, the bartender took it back without hesitation and was very accommodating. I then ordered a Negroni after the woman sitting next to us highly recommended it. I don't usually drink gin, but this cocktail was absolutely delicious and changed my mind. Since we were there for several hours, we shared an order of zucchini and eggplant chips and happily snacked on them throughout the game. The atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming, with a nice mix of ages and people enjoying the evening. We made sure to leave our bartender a generous tip since we occupied our seats for the entire game. Even though the Knicks didn't pull out a win that night, we certainly didn't leave defeated. I'd happily return for another game, cocktail, and fun evening out. And maybe even get dinner there. Little did I know there was another big room in the ack once you past the restrooms. They were having a thriving business there!

He was constantly busy zippin around but maintained a nice demeanor and made everyone feel welcome! Must orders of mine: the burger! Although small, it comes out piping hot and the fresh white onion between the bottom bun and burger is awesome because it doesn't make the bottom bun soggy and catches all the juices from the actual meat. Love subbing the fries for a Caesar salad! Standout appetizer is the fried zucchini and eggplant with tzatziki-- crispy, hot, juicy and I get it every time!

The…read morepull apart truffle monkey bread was our initial reason for coming, and although the price point was quite steep, I would say it's worth the try. The bread was fluffy and not dry, which I had seen previous reviews say before. Paired with the creamy truffle butter, it had a luxurious mouthfeel. My favorite was the pork chop (cognac, sweet prunes, bacon, rosemary) -- the sweet and soft texture of the prune was melted in my mouth like fat, and the pork was tender, with the rosemary also coming through. The vodka rigatoni was a skip, somewhat bland and one-note, we ended up putting some of the truffle butter and garlic aioli from the fries to make it more flavorful. This was especially in contrast with the spicy shrimp pasta which was much tastier. Also got the strawberry vacherin (strawberry ice cream, meringue, vanilla whipped cream), it was my first time having this dessert. The tartness of the strawberry was great with the fluffy meringue and the sweet ice cream. Service was extremely attentive, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated with moody lighting. Although the space was packed, it didn't feel too loud or crowded. We spent about two hours and didn't feel rushed.

I went on a Thursday night, and the place was absolutely packed. The front feels more like a bar/casual area, while the dining room is tucked toward the back. My reservation was at 10:15 PM, so I actually had a light dinner beforehand and ordered a little lighter than I normally would. I got: - Truffle Monkey Bread ($34.99) - Prime Rib French Dip ($39.99) - Pommes Frites ($13.99) - Banana Split Sundae ($24.99) I thought the prices were definitely on the higher end when I first sat down, but the Truffle Monkey Bread is divine! Honestly, it's probably in my top 3 bread experiences of my life. If you love truffle, butter, cheese, and basically everything good in life, please get this. It comes out slightly warm and is just incredible. I will probably dream about this bread. The French Dip was good, although it was a little too salty for me. If I get the chance to come back, I'd probably try one of their actual steaks instead. The pommes frites were super crispy, basically McDonald's fries but elevated. The Banana Split Sundae was so pretty. I loved how they placed all the little treats around the crevices/imprints of the dish (not sure how else to describe it ). It's huge, though, so definitely don't expect to finish it yourself. I'd recommend sharing it with 3+ people. I was also celebrating an anniversary, and they brought out a strawberry scoop for us. It tasted homemade and really fresh. I could actually see pieces of strawberry in it, which I loved. The restaurant is definitely on the pricier side, and getting a dinner reservation can be a struggle, but I'd absolutely go again if I got the chance. The decor is cozy and upscale, the food was excellent, and the whole place has a really nice atmosphere. My only real complaint was that our waitress kept pushing us to order more, which got a little annoying, especially since we had already ordered quite a bit. Overall: expensive + difficult reservation, but absolutely worth trying. And please get the truffle monkey bread.
