Alright, now that I've got your attention, here's why. - the bread tasted fresh, soft on the inside with a nice crunch to it outside - the chicken was meaty and tender - the sauce was really good; it tasted like homemade and how I would expect my imaginary nonna would make - the cheese was gooey and stretchy - the sandwich was scrumptious; all the main ingredients complemented each other and made for a delightful, indulgent meal You get a good value for a great sandwich from local shop with good customer service and a long history in the community. Been meaning to try this place for awhile, but just isn't really on the way home for me. After today (2/27/25), I'll bubble out and around to get it. Got the beef dip as I try that or pastrami at every deli (if a deli can't get those right then they aren't a deli). Au Ju sauce was very good, and the sandwich had it in there already (think single dip at Phillipes). Meat was quality with plenty in it, and the bread was perfect for this sandwich. The upper half being a bit crunchy to dip. $13 for the regular, which was good sized (about 9 inches or more). In this day & age $13 is not expensive for a quality sub. I'd say the food was about 4.25 (and I'm a guy that doesn't give 5 stars or 10's for anything), but I give 5 stars because Mom & Pop shops like this need to stay around, owner is very funny, very friendly and just what you won't get at Subway or McDonald's....meaning a guy that cares about what he's charging you for!!! Italian sub is delicious. Owners are very friendly but one of the coolest things about this place is the boxing memorabilia all along the walls. Went to this place for lunch today. Arrived just after 11:30, hoping to beat the noon crowd. There was nobody there. The Open sign not lit; door locked and barred, no sign of anyone. I finally intended to try this place out, which I'd heard so many good things about; i now work only 10 or so minutes from there. Anyway, there are no hours posted in the window. I called on the phone; no answer. I waited around for several minutes; nothing. If the place is truly finished I'd have expected some sign in the window or something. But absolutely no clue about this place, Paul's Deli. Not necessarily the best customer service or food I've ever tried to get for a weekday lunch lol. Spectacular customer service, but the inside (ambiance) is very poor. It is very old and run down, cluttered as well. I would like to come here more often, but my husband refuses because he never feels comfortable which I understand. I wish this place would hire someone to do some remodeling and update some of their soda machines and menu to something not yellow and dirty looking. It is long overdo. There were 3-4 tables at the most. One was occupied and the 1-2 had not been cleared from prior occupants. It was all kinda pleasantly cluttered. As it was, I recall having to wipe off crumbs from our table. No big deal. I get it. Times are rough, hard to find people wanting to work and slim profits for restaurants. Nevertheless, this was pretty much overlooked by us because the dude behind the counter was not slacking....doing the best he could, taking care of everything and he DID keep us apprised of the wait with apologies. I discovered this place last week and finally tried it today. I had the gobagool.. capocola for you non-Nueva Yorkers... It was delicious and meaty. The pepperoncinis added great flavor. Place has a cool New York/New Jersey deli vibe, tons of cool boxing memorabilia in the front (including a Marvelous Marvin Hagler autographed photo Middleweight G.O.A.T.) I can't stress enough, how great value this is. The sub can feed 2-3 people. It's big. Fed me all day which says a lot The sauce... man, this place knows how to make a good sauce. It just so happened that this place and the Vietnamese sandwich shop (THH) are literally 1 or 2 doors apart from each other. We got there and went our separate ways to place our orders. Paul's is an institution and the reviews rave about what a legend he but I just felt like having a Vietnamese sandwich that day. You just can't mistaken the aroma of a bustling Italian kitchen---warm buttery-garlicky fragrances, tomatoes caramelizing in marinara, fresh bouquets of herbs... Let me backtrack a little: I was walking by Paul's Deli completely unawares, awaiting my lunch order from a nearby place when BAM!! My olfactory senses stopped me in my tracks! So I peeked in and saw the chef swiftly working the kitchen as he cracked jokes and carried on friendly banter with some long-time regulars. Charming :) Despite years of visiting this plaza, I never once noticed this firmly-established place before. So I did a quick Yelp search to see if any friends have been here and sure enough, top Yelp reviewer and trusty pal Aaron E. gave it his thumbs up. I was done for. So like a mesmerized moth to a flame, I fluttered over to the cashier's and, as if on auto-pilot, put in an order for dinner even though it wasn't even noon yet: "3 cannoli and a chicken fettuccine alfredo please!" (notice how I ordered the dessert first, haha) Bonus: the entrées come with garlic bread which is best immediately consumed. Wait too long and the bread will quickly turn chewy. Verdict: The cannoli from NYC's Farrara bakery were nicely crunchy, chilled and despite the abundance of chocolate chips, not too sweet. As for the chicken fettuccine alfredo, the pasta was perfectly cooked and there was an ample amount of cheese melted over heaps of tender white-meat chicken. However, the alfredo sauce had a pronounced twist to it---was it brandy or sherry? I wasn't much a fan, but I'm no Italian foodie expert either. Still good though! I will absolutely be returning to Paul's for more. Next up: the Italian sub and lasagna. This was definitely a memorable example of a gem hiding right under my nose, literally...just take a whiff!
