I really loved that I could get a whole banh mi for about 5-7 dollar range. The grilled pork was tasty, and the pate and mayo were really good! The filet mignon bánh mì is perfection -- the meat is so tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Add in the XO sauce and mayo combo? It's like reaching heavens gate. I was in Garden Grove and was craving a banh mi, so I saw that VO Sandwiches was near me, so I decided to pop by. The restaurant is in a small plaza and there is plenty of parking around. I came right before closing and there was no one else, so I was able to order pretty quickly. I decided on a grilled pork sandwich. It did take a little bit of a time for the sandwich to come out, but I figured it was because I came so late in the day. There is also a small selection of snacks and drinks which I looked around while I was waiting. I was taking my sandwich to go, but there is 1 table in the restaurant. It's not really a place where you would eat there, more like a to go place, which was OK with me. As for the sandwich, I thought that the meat was really good. So flavorful and tender. They were also pretty generous with the meat in the sandwich. The bread was just OK, but paired with the meat, it was pretty good. I was sad that I didn't get a second one. I will definitely come back here next time my banh mi craving hits. The bread on my nem nuong (pork sausage) banh mi was perfect. Crispy outside but lighter than air. The nem nuong could easily be homemade based on the way it was cut and the soft texture of the meat. I found diced cucumbers, cilantro, julienne carrots, and sliced mild jalapeños inside for the veg. There was scant sauce which is necessary but should never make the sandwich too sweet. One of favourite places in the area to get Banh Mi... the sandwiches cost between USD 4-7 each and they are of a really good size! We shared our nicely filled sandwich. They definitely changed the layout for the last time I was here. I brought my husband here with me to grab sandwiches since we were in the area and he wanted some thing to eat. Let's go to Vo! Hmm, maybe that's punnier in Vietnamese... VO Sandwiches is a little corner store that sells casual Vietnamese eats, frozen egg rolls by the bag, and CA Lottery products, including one $500,000 scratcher on 9/11/23. I currently reside in an absolute desert of Vietnamese food and saw the 4.4 Yelp rating during this SoCal trip, so I decided to give them a try. The Banh Mi Dac Biet ($6.00) was the star of the show. The bread was insubstantial in a good way. Although the meat, a mix of the "bacon" and pork loaf, was a modest portion, it tasted right. The pickled carrot and daikon were alright and the jalapeno wasn't too spicy. The mayo and the likely canned pate added enough flavor, making the sandwich as a whole sing. I didn't enjoy the Banh Mi Thit Nuong ($5.50) as much. Again, the meat was pretty modest, but it was also red and sweet. I have higher expectations of grilled pork. The bread and various accoutrements were fine. Unfortunately, I also took a flyer on the Pork Pate Chaud ($2.50). I did appreciate that the pork was nicely pink in the middle. However, it has an odd sweetness instead of leaning savory, and it's underseasoned in terms of both salt and pepper. This is a definite skip. It's just a counter, so service is fine. There are roughly one table instead and a smaller table outside, so anticipate having to do takeout as I did. I would come back to VO Sandwiches for the Banh Mi Dac Biet and perhaps to try something else in their massive sandwich list. Since it was more conducive to take my sandwiches to go, that's what I did. I ate them within 10 minutes at a nearby park and boy were they amazing! Some of the best I've ever had. Only a few slivers of pickled radish and carrot? :/ Bread has no crunch to it, which can be a good thing as I know people who prefer to not have their mouth scraped on each baguette bite. It's only open until 2PM on Sundays, and since I arrived around 1:20PM, they had already put away the few tables/chairs for dine-in. However, they also had some discounted dishes on the counter since it was close to closing time. There are sandwiches as well as some other dishes on the menu, plus drinks. The restaurant also has a store component with quite a few items for sale (fresh, frozen, and packaged). Food is very reasonably priced, with most sandwiches between $5-7 dollars as of December 2022. I ordered the #1 special banh mi and the fish porridge. While I personally prefer slightly crispier bread, the baguette was light and flaky. The ratio of meat to mayo/pate was perfect, providing a balanced moist sandwich. The banh mi was also quite long, probably about a foot in length. The porridge was comforting and came with bean sprouts and a lemon wedge. Overall, food was delicious and as mentioned before a great value. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant too.
