Doug and his partner came over this morning to replace our leaking kitchen faucet with a beautiful Delta unit, and also replaced a cartridge in the bathroom faucet hot handle. Just an update that over the years we have continued to use Doug and First call - probably 3 times and a 4th scheduled for next week. They continue to do the job right. Great attitude, the price is right and most importantly - they fix things right the first time. We have an old house, 92 years old, and several previous owners who were "Home Depot Weekend Warriors" who didn't know jack squat about repairs. We know one of the previous owners through neighborhood holiday parties "Yeah, I'm a chef - taught myself how to fix that!" All proud. Jackass. Yeah yeah, here I am 7 years later having someone sort out your rigged up system made of presswood, pot metal and duct tape..." Anyway. This is a family owned business and the owners and team members are THE very best. They did a repiping job on our 50-year old two-story house with 2500 square feet, 2.5 baths, kitchen, laundry room and three external spigots. They also repiped us clear out to the curb and the city hook-up (this should always be done but it is optional) and they did it without tearing up our entire yard. Upon completing this hook-up, Doug added a water-to-the-house shut-off valve inside our house -- now no need any longer to go out to front curb to turn off water. Needless to say, we were terrified -- the thought of what all this would entail was a bit overwhelming. But Doug and Lainie (owners) came to our home twice to go over everything with us to make sure we understood how the process would take place before we decided to proceed. They said it would take only two days for the whole process. We thought, "Sure, uh-uhm!" But true to their word, the job was completed in two days. So much to say: just the nicest people to work with, they always covered their shoes when in the house, covered flooring where they were walking and working, really know their business, responded quickly to any emails/questions. Their customer service is outstanding. A week after job was completed we discovered a small drip in the bathtub. We emailed them late morning, they called us mid-afternoon, and Doug was here by mid-morning the next day to fix it. Lainie and Doug, Gabe and Nick, if you read this, thank you so much for a job so well done. We very much enjoyed working with you. Almost hoping we have another plumbing issue soon! read more

Nick and 1st Call are gems! Honestly, I've never felt so good about plumbing services, mostly because problems with plumbing are so (to us) mysterious and super costly. Early winter time we found a good amount of water on the floor of our garage, and we had no idea where it came from. Call 1st Call, talk to the amazing and helpful Lainie, and Nick is out in the next couple of days. He diagnoses and fixes the problem in less than an hour. Then we called more recently about a toilet that we cannot unclog permanently, and based on Lainie's advice we purchased a replacement toilet (from Amazon, it was easy in fact). Once the toilet arrived I got back in touch with Lainie and she coordinated an appointment with Nick. He arrives at our home and is so friendly, helpful, professional and efficient that we told him he's our plumber for life! Also, he took away the large boxes and packing from the old toilet and for a small fee took the old toilet itself; we had thought, what are we going to do with this thing? Fortunately Nick took it so that problem was off our shoulders. YES call 1st Plumbing, they are awesome. And we'll use them for the rest of our years---- thanks especially to Nick and Lainie! P.S. If you order a replacement toilet be sure to see if it comes with a lid. Ours did not so we ordered separately. Nick installed the old lid on the new toilet temporarily. So helpful! read more

Made an appointment with 1st call because my water heater wasn't making hot water. Called, and they were able to come 3 days later, seems all plumbers are busy right now. They diagnosed that both of my elements were blown in the water heater. Replaced both, and I had hot water in minutes. I was charged $125/hr. plus parts, Which seems quite high considering they were only here for 30 mins. Either way I'm grateful for having hot water again. I haven't priced other plumbers in the area, but I would hire them again for professionalism alone. read more

Last week I needed a laundry drain cleared. These guys accepted the challenge and had a guy on site within a few hours. I forgot the name of the technician, but he was thorough and made sure all steps were taken to clear the drain. They accepted a credit card (over the phone, and with a 4% service charge). They charge $95/ hr to come out, up to the first hour. Overall, everyone I talked to was professional and courteous. I would definitely use this company again! read more

We had received a quote from 1st Call Plumbing, and we all agreed to move forward. We scheduled with our general contractor to meet at our house. The plumber was in a grumpy mood when they arrived from the start. Like the guy seemed pretty upset that he even had to be here. And then we talked about stuff while we waited for our contractor. We are first time homeowners and we have a lot of questions. We want to understand what is going on, and I asked a question about something in their contract. He interrupted and he said, "You know what, I don't even want to be here right now. It's an energy thing, and I am getting bad energy from you, so have a good day but I'm leaving." Then as they left, Our showed up and they said to him, "We are pulling out of this one, good luck." If this isn't the perfect example of unprofessionalism, then I don't know what is. We had such a great experience with this company today. They were busy but came out the day after I called. My 80 year old mom was having drain issues. We previously had the line snaked by a different company and it was still backing up. Nick came out to see what the problem was and give us a bid. There is some extensive work to be done but he hustled and fixed the main issue so that she could use the sinks, toilet and shower with out any problem. He had another job to get to and we so appreciate him going under the house, cutting out bad pipe and getting the water flowing. We will have them back to do the larger job and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. read more

Gee, I read all these great reviews, and wish I could agree. Many of them mention Doug, but he was not one of the guys that was sent by 1st Call Plumbing to fix the leaking drain pipe on my kitchen sink. When I made the appointment a few days ago, I was told that they charge $125./hour. I said, okay. I was told they would be sending two guys and I asked if it was $125. for two, and was told, "yes." When the plumber and his helper arrived they told me it would cost about $200. to fix the drain pipe. They got to work in the basement where the pipe is. After several minutes I heard splitting wood and saw splintering wood flying, and I realized the plumber was gouging out the sill plate (the wood that sits on top of foundation and the entire house sits on top of it). I politely asked about what he was doing, and he was very nasty. He got off his step ladder and started lecturing me about his years of experience and that this is how you do it. He and his helper made up reasons as to why they should be gouging out the sill plate to fit the elbow of the pipe - "I would have to pay more than $600 if they did it differently," "it doesn't matter," "this is how you do it," "it doesn't hurt the house," etc. I felt that my concern was very reasonable and it was a no brainer that it would be better to trim the pipe higher up or figure out another way. They insisted it was a good idea to proceed and so they gouged out the sill until the elbow fit. When they said they were done and told me to go up and turn on the water, I did, and water poured out of the bottom of the new pipe piece. "A bad seal," I was told. Okay, no problem. They have another seal, but the way they install it is to cut the new pipe piece in half in order to pull out the bottom piece. So now they have to joint the two severed pieces. They tell me that this can function as the new, "clean out." Yeah, I suppose that would do in a pinch, but I wouldn't call bending a pipe and straining the seal at top or bottom, a "clean out." They were finished in an hour and ten minutes and presented me with a bill for $225. I said that I was told they charge $125./hour and was told, "parts aren't free," and "we worked more than an hour." The cost of the parts was not itemized, but I don't think a 6' piece of 3" pvc pipe and a seal costs close to $100. Each thing I mention above is not huge by itself, but everything together made for a really crummy experience. I won't be calling them again. read more

If you need more in a plumber, you're way too high-maintenance. :-) When my way-too-expensive faucet began leaking from parts inaccessible to me, I called about four different plumbers, and 1st Call made a significant effort to fit me in, even though this was not an emergency. Doug and his crew were a pleasure - from the first call to schedule, to the final installation of a faucet that no longer leaked. I would use 1st Call again in a heartbeat. Really had a great experience with these guys. I'm a little slow to write my review, because I like to make sure the work holds up. These guys came out in March to fix the leak we had in our downstairs bathroom, dripping down from our upstairs shower. From speaking to a very friendly appointment setter on the phone who worked hard to get me an appointment as soon as possible to when the very polite and helpful plumber showed up, it was a very painless experience. He worked quickly and neatly. Even though he had to saw through our ceiling in order to address the leak, when he left there was no dust or debris anywhere (note: he did not repair the ceiling, but I did not expect him to, as that isn't his job). He had all the hardware he needed to repair our issue in his van and it was quick and painless. He was also kind enough to let us uncrate our dog because she would not stop barking and once out of her crate she calmed down and just laid down to watch him. Before he left, he asked if there was anything else he could do and I asked if he could tighten the pipes under the kitchen sink where I had replaced the faucet myself (I'm sadly not as strong as my diy projects sometimes require!). He did it in about 2 seconds and I am very grateful! Would absolutely call again and recommend them to anyone. read more

Was having issues with a toilet and as usual went immediately to YELP for some names to call. We haven't had to work with any plumbers over the last two years since our move to Portland. Of course, there were alot to choose from but we chose 1st Call Plumbing based on the reviews. From the get-go it was a great experience. From the initial call with Lanie to Nick coming out and fixing the issue - it was professional and courteous all the way. I described the situation over the phone to Lanie and she was very helpful and courteous, and scheduled us for a next day appointment. Nick arrived and immediately told us what the issue was. In less than an hour the toilet was working just fine again. And we came in "under budget". Prompt scheduling for our home to be re-piped....very courtesy on phone when scheduling and knew the answers to my questions..once the crew got here on time mind you, they took great care to cover my floors with the proper material to keep my hardwoods and carpet from all debris and proceeded to explain the re-pipe again and then went to work, they did my home in about 6 hours...I was amazed and so thrilled. After they were done they explained the next process which is the inspection and such...and then they will be back to wrap things up and fix the wall { for you need access to the pipes in the shower} good as new... Every person from start to finish on this job took great care in the work they did and to me that shows pride in their work. Never once did I hear them argue or complain or use any foul language when talking to one another..{which I have had happen when another service person came out a few years back for something else} I had one question about something and e mailed them next morning and with in a few minutes I got a reply " Be there in a few" ...Doug { owner} came right away and explained what was up and never once made me feel like I wasted his time for a silly question. Amazing and efficient. What I thought was going to be a huge plumbing job turned out to be a small adjustment on the connection faucets in the wall.
