I'm in Seattle so I had to get Chinese Mongolian Beef. Went to Bainbridge Island... Food service ambiance but mostly the food. Now you all know I hunt down specific places to eat as I'm limited on what I do eat without getting sick. So where to start got into Seattle wanting Chinese food was told a local place but they're closed for vacation... So I go across sound on a ferry and just check out the sites. Cute little island of Brainbridge. Found this place in a little market area they have grocery store cleaners. It's a little hidden gem and that's how i prefer it... The service was great, the food extra hot and spicy Mongolian beef was perfectly made with the spices and celery carrots green onion and chili peps ... I can't say more than if your in Seattle take a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island... The plate was more than enough for hubby and I... with a drink cost was moderate about 22$-25$ with the tip... It was worth it, but as I always tell yall- try it for yourself and you be the judge of what you eat, even if you're trying it for the first time... don't stop growing your mind and taste pallet just because you're not sure... it's an adventure... Unfortunately, that is by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I ordered Kung pau chicken and my son ordered the dumplings. Neither one of us could eat it. We threw away everything. The chicken was 85% breading of some type and dried out chicken in the middle with a drizzled sauce, straight out of a jar. Tasty food! I stumbled upon this restaurant as I was driving around Bainbridge looking for something else. Glad I found it. The wonton soup is my new favorite of all wonton soups in Kitsap. Full of fat wontons, as well as chicken and veggies. I liked the flavor of the chicken bites but not sure what the meat actually was. They claimed white meat chicken but it had the look and feel of chicken gizzard. Easy ordering and curbside pickup was nice. read more

I am not a regular at Pau's because it's not my family's favorite cuisine. That said, every time I go I enjoy it. I had the Mongolian Beef this time and it was fantastic. I arrived right before close and was made very welcome ("don't worry, take your time, we are glad you came"). My entree came out perfectly cooked with that velvety beef only Chinese cuisine does. I really enjoyed my pepper steak and the egg rolls were right out the fryer and crispy. However, my husband and mother had the shrimp fried rice. The shrimp were over cooked and the fried rice had very few veggies. Also even though the egg rolls were delicious the dipping sauce was too sweet and looked as if it came out of a bottle. read more

Decided to give them a second chance after coming shortly after their opening in 2018 - unfortunately, their food really just seems to range from "ok" to mediocre. As noted by a number of other reviewers, just about all of the Chinese takeout staples - fried rice, chicken and beef stir fries - aren't particularly memorable here; not terrible, definitely a step up from Safeway's food bar across the street but maybe not by enough to really justify spending more. None of their appetizers were particularly impressive either. Tried the wonton soup - very simple-tasting but not in a good way; The taiwanese popcorn chicken - decent salty peppery garlicy flavor (hard to go wrong) and "karaage-like" texture but fairly overseasoned. I didn't dislike the crab wontons but the texture was a little tough rather than light and crispy and the filling was much more cream cheese than any noticeable crab. While everything seems more or less competently executed and nothing - save the "authentic" mapo dofu - was outright unpleasant to eat (not on account of being too spicy but just because under all the ginger and pepper it really just didn't taste very good), at best their food seemed pretty much on par with what you could get frozen at the store. Would be nice to see them maybe narrow down their menu and refine their seasoning/core dishes a little bit to make them feel a little more worth the price but I'm not holding my breath. To their credit, the portion sizes are decently generous - assuming you aren't a super big eater, you could get away with ordering 1 dish for dinner and spreading it out over multiple days with rice. As far as the quality of food goes compared to the price... unfortunately, it's pretty much par for the course here on Bainbridge. read more

I've ordered takeout from this place twice, and my experiences were mixed, with okay food but disappointing service. During my first visit, I placed an order online and included a generous tip. Upon arrival, the staff member didn't greet me or acknowledge my presence. Well, at least my food was ready and waiting on the table in a bag. On my second visit, I chose not to tip in advance due to the lackluster service I received previously. Again, I was met with no greeting. This time, my order was left unbagged, merely placed in a few boxes without utensils, making me wonder if the quality of service, even packaging, depends on whether you tip beforehand. Additionally, the restaurant uses compostable food containers, which unfortunately became soggy and began leaking by the time I got home both times. I think people are sleeping on Pau's. I agree that some of their typical "Chinese-American" dishes (general tso's chicken, etc.) might not seem great, but I thought it was okay/good. Yes, the breading on the general tso's chicken was reminiscent of the sweet and sour chicken breading, but the sauce was still general tso's sauce... and guess what? The chicken was crispy and crunchy, even under the sauce. Also it was white meat! Additionally, here are some other dishes I thought were pretty good. The mapo tofu (hot and spicy- yum!), Taiwanese popcorn chicken- (I have missed those flavors!), and beef chow fun. Admittedly the beef chow fun was just okay, but I'd still get it again! I'm actually excited to try some other dishes like the salt pepper tiger prawn, pork belly noodles, and dry sautéed green beans with minced pork. In all, I think if you go with the more "authentic" cuisine on the menu, you'll fare better. I would say give them a try, the food is pretty good. PS- The lighting was not great in my pictures. I went the 3rd day that they opened and completely expected a wait, which is what I did have to do. I didn't take any stars off for the wait because that's what's expected when a new place opens. The staff were nice and told me what the wait time would be prior to me ordering and that was great. The only problem was the food lacked flavor. It tasted like they forgot to season everything which was a big disappointment. The orange chicken was also very gummy and not crispy what so ever. It makes sense if they felt rushed to get all of the orders out but quality control should be valued no matter how busy. Hopefully this was a one time thing. I'd go back to try them again but I'll wait until they work the kinks out. Also, I probably won't order the orange chicken again. read more

Awful food, might as well go to Safeway. I've eaten here about half a dozen times. I always hope it will be better than the last time. With so little options on Bainbridge I stay hopefully optimistic. Today was the last straw. My mom and I ordered wanton soup, egg rolls, chow mein and orange chicken. The meal cost $50. The wanton soup used to be the only saving grace but it tasted like dirty dish water. The egg rolls tasted of frostbite. The chow mein was watery and so sweet. The orange chicken was horrendous. The chicken was the consistency of a potato. This frozen food being passed off as good take out is a shame. I would have rather gone to Safeway and gotten frozen food. Would have been cheaper and tastier. This place makes Panda Express look classy. read more

A wise TikTok once said: "if a Chinese restaurant has 3.5 stars, that means it's good and authentic". I don't know how authentic the food here is but it sure is good. I always stick with the beef dishes, cause they never miss. Mongolian Beef is great and basically everyone would like it, and I love the Sichuan Beef even though it's an acquired taste and a lot of the people here on Bainbridge (if you catch my drift) won't be fans. read more

We stayed at a hotel across the street and did take out dinner. The restaurant was nice and clean. Food was hot. Hot and sour soup was tasty, perfect consistency with good amount of mushrooms & tofu, generous portion, my favorite dish. The sauté chicken breast with green beans and onion was bland, meat had a coating? The flat rice noodles with shrimp had better flavor large shrimps very generous, could use a little more sprouts and veggies. Overall good take out. read more

We've been in Bainbridge Island for a year and a half but had not tried Pau's because of the reviews. This week I decided to give it a go, while my husband is on a trip. If it was awful, he would not be offended. Garlic eggplant and dry Szechuan string beans. The eggplant was amazing, really delicious. Huge portion! The string beans had a seasoning combo that was different to my stomach slate, but I got used to it in one bite. I got three meals out of my adventure, and I'm introducing my husband to it as soon as he is back! read more

The hot and sour soup was delicious. A generous dinner portion with plenty of vegetables. The chicken was not fried, and that is the way the dish I ordered is served. I would give five stars but the chicken was a bit odd in texture. Maybe that is the way it is supposed to be cooked for the dish I ordered. It is really clean inside the restaurant which is super. I tried Pau's last year and was marginally underwhelmed. It was OK and they seemed open to suggestions by other customers, so I didn't yelp about it because I thought I would wait a while and come back. I waited, came back, and it was delicious! (I'm ordering as I type this on the Ferry) Experimented with mild, medium and spicy orders and each was done perfectly without being under whelming or overbearing. Fantastic balance. The seasoning and spices were so much improved, everything I had was delicious, inventive and tasty without being obnoxiously hot. The Kung Pau shrimp had a hint of secret ingredient that gave it a sneaky little zing, ... or maybe I imagined it. Broccoli beef I ordered was tender, well marinated and expertly prepared. I enjoyed it very much and have begun making it a regular stop as I exit the ferry! Well done. The portions are ample and we always hope to have leftovers but always seem to graze to the empty container. I'm giving it 5 stars to help balance out other early honest but more negative reviews. I'm guessing it's hard to serve a clientele that may vary from those that like their fare bland to those that prefer unique authentic. Pau's seems to have done that in a tough location. I decided to try this place for the first time. What a mistake! When I arrived it was clear to see that all of the dine in furniture had been removed and they were operating as to go only. That's fine enough. I went in to order. After paying I was asked to wait outside. It was a chilly day and that wasn't fun. I asked why and they said COVID. I pointed out that I was the only customer in the shop, was wearing a mask and standing about 20 feet from the staff. They insisted I stand out in the cold. Once I received my food I hurried home only to experience what can be described as expensive mall food court Asian cuisine. My advice, go somewhere that follows the COVID guidelines and doesn't make you stand in the cold for no reason. read more

Bainbridge, I know you've been dying for a good Chinese restaurant on the island, but this place ain't it. It's very small, has no character, and nothing about the space or menu conveys authenticity. It's the kind of Chinese restaurant you'd expect to find in a place like Aberdeen or Puyallup. We ordered the Mongolian beef, which was some beef smothered in a mountain of onions. It should have been called "Mongolian onions." We also had the green beans, which were flavorful and cooked well, but they, too, were lost in all the onions, and they were VERY heavily seasoned with black pepper. Pau, believe me when I say that NO ONE eats that much onion. If you're going to use something as a filler to make it look like people are getting a good amount of food, use something that people will actually eat. The third thing we got was some kind of noodle dish (udon, maybe), and after a couple bites, I decided it wasn't worth it. Another reviewer described it as glutinous, and that's a good descriptor. If you think that the Thai restaurants on Bainbridge are fantastic, then you will probably love this place. I, personally, think that Panda Express is better, and I'm being 0% snarky, and 100% honest. Side note: I don't normally post "after" pictures of my meals, because, gross. But I want y'all to understand the amount of onion overkill. This is what I've been waiting for: good Asian food (besides Thai) on Bainbridge Island. Yay! They're here! We had to wait about 20 minutes, but we sat in their lovely space with beautiful fresh flowers and the man who took our order kept us apprised of how much longer it would be. We then took our order to go. I had to pick up my son, so the food waited a half hour, but no matter. It was perfect: the blend of spices, the noodles al dente, celery with that crisp snap. So good. Udon is good, fried rice is better than good, and they do a good job with veggies. Lean towards dishes that are more veg and less meat, and you should be solid. I'd give 3.5 stars if I could, because I've had not-so-good food from here before, but I'll lean 4 stars over 3 because if you know what to get (avoid anything "szechuan" not for the spice, but for lack of flavor) you can get an affordable meal quickly, which is miles better than most of Bainbridge. Pau's chef is sometimes willing to make substitutes in the menu: for instance, using extra-quality beef for a few dollars extra when we order the excellent fried beef noodles. For us the hot and sour soup is more than a tasty soup, it is also spirit lifting on windy and rainy days. I loved the food here. On my visit to Bainbridge Island with friends, I had the string beans and also the Chow Fun with tofu. The noodles were great. The House Special Fried Rice was excellent, very fresh and tasty. Another friend ordered Kung Pau shrimp. We shared family style and everyone loved the food. The vibe is simple and friendly.
