I think that SuBI is a fine option but my overall reaction is that it was overpriced for the mid quality of the restaurant. I expected more since there were plenty of good reviews, but I think we should've spent some more time searching. For context, we wanted a good sushi dinner - willing to spend a little more on special rolls, etc. I would maybe consider this spot again if you were to just come for some appetizers or regular rolls, but don't come here expecting phenomenal sushi. We got the pork belly lettuce wraps and the sweet coconut shrimp. The lettuce wraps were a highlight/our favorite and honestly I would come back for just these. The coconut shrimp was OK, but not anything to write home about. For sushi, we got the Black Widow and X-File special rolls, the chu-toro sashimi, and one yamagobo maki. The most expensive part, the chu-toro, was not as good as I'd expect it to be for the price point. I've had much better (cheaper) toro so this was the biggest let-down. The special rolls were good, but again, not great. I definitely favored the Black Widow roll, as the soft-shell crab was very yummy. Service was also lacking a bit. It was not busy but our waiter wasn't super attentive. Waters sat empty for a while at one point, and in general it just took a while in between visits. read more

A day trip to Bainbridge and a friend's recommendation lead us to Subi, off the beaten path. It's in a type of strip mall-like building on the first floor. My family ordered the salmon poke salad, salmon chirashi bowl, salmon roll, soft shell crab roll and the crazy roll. The fish was fresh and overall the experience was very good. However one of our big complaints about the way some sushi rolls are made is how large they are. You cannot possibly put a whole piece of 1 of these rolls in your mouth. It's more like 4 deconstructed bites, which is annoying to eat. The chirashi bowl was good but the rice had too much ponzu sweet sauce. We ordered the fresh wasabi and the potency wasn't as strong as in the tube but fresh is more flavorful, at least IMHO. The ambience and atmosphere was nice. Restrooms are located in the common area of the mall. Menu was extensive with non-fish items as well. Overall a solid place to go for dinner. read more

On a lark, we stopped by SuBI for a late dinner. Bainbridge Island rolls up the sidewalks (what precious few there are!) at 8:30 or so (with some exceptions), and we left the house at 8! We were heading to the Indian Restaurant in the same shopping center, the Pavilion. We were walking by and decided to check it out. We were glad we did. It was already 8:10, and they were closing at 8:30. The sushi bar was closing even sooner. They sat us quickly at a table by the window, gave us menus, and took our orders. Cordial, friendly, and not rushing, which we really appreciated. They have a variety of comfy tables throughout the restaurant, and I think we would have been happy at any of them. They have a happy hour menu from 7:30 to close, so we (mostly) availed ourselves of it. I ordered their California and Spicy Tuna combo roll, their Avacado and Cucumber roll, three salmon nigiri, and a 20 oz. Sapporo to share between us. My date ordered the Shiitake Maki (vegetarian), with added avocado. The food came quickly, just under the wire for last call, and it was delicious. I particularly like the spicy tuna roll, but also enjoyed the shiitake maki. My only complaint: the salmon nigiri didn't seem as fresh as I had hoped (the fish seemed a little tough). We like this place. It can get filled up, so on a busy night, do reserve. Yes, the prices are at a premium. You are at a nice sushi place on Bainbridge island, after all. But the quality delivers. The fish is fresh and plentiful, the food is tasty and nice. There's a happy hour menu that makes the prices more affordable, so look for that if you are into fried food. This place not only offers a vast array of American-style sushi rolls, but it has nigiri (including of rarer seafood and fish!), and full kitchen offerings, including some Korean fare. Ambiance-wise, if you are there at peak hour, expect loud families and big parties (although this isn't a chucky cheese, thankfully). If you prefer quiet, go during off hours or less busy day. It wasn't bad. The katsu and curry is good, the ramen is decent. I'd had both better and worse. The kids really enjoyed the miso soup. For the price of the meal I probably would have had more for less elsewhere... but we were visiting the island and unfamiliar with the area restaurants. The service was good and the restaurant is cute, but inside a little strip mall area with a theatre. At least I think it was a theatre, as the place smelled like popcorn. read more

The sushi rolls here are huge. They have a raw bar where you can watch it being made in front of you. Parking is easy in the lot outside. My only complaint is the service time was pretty slow. I believe I was here for close to two hours and ate alone. Two rolls and an appetizer. read more

Took a Thursday evening trip over to Bainbridge with a friend stopped into this place. We had looked online and saw that they had a happy hour which said 7:30pm to close on the website. We got there a few before 7:30pm and weren't given happy hour menus, but they were brought over after we asked. We then ordered a few things off the happy hour and regular menu. We got the half and half rolls: SALMONLOVE + ULTRAALBACORE and TUNA + SALMON, the Yummy Yummy Roll (happy hour), and gyoza (happy hour). My friend tried to order an order of sweet potato fries a little later off the happy hour menu and they said it had ended so I'm still a little confused on whether it's before or after 7:30pm like it said online. The gyoza came out first and they were really good standard gyoza. The sushi took a lot longer to come out which was strange because the restaurant didn't seem busy, but our waitress did apologize for the long wait. The yummy yummy was my favorite of the rolls. The tempura shrimp had such a good flavor and all the ingredients came together really well. The salmon and tuna rolls were amazing. The big chunks of fish were so fresh, especially the salmon. The salmonlove and ultraalbacore combo was good, but I don't know that it all paired together well. The crispy onions on top kind of felt overpowering to the roll. Overall the happy hour deals are great (if you can figure out when to go) and the sushi is really fresh and we'll priced. read more

WOW!!! I was super hungry and had the agedashi tofu, hamachi nigiri, toro nigiri, ultra albacore roll, and chocolate lava cake. Everything was SOOO good, especially the sushi roll! I've been to many sushi restaurants, but I feel I can confidently say this is the best sushi roll I've ever had. No imitation crab, and no tempura shrimp in the roll, which is a major plus to me (many sushi restaurants throw that in as a default filler, in my opinion). The crunchy onions were fresh and crispy, the perfect delicate crunch. Everything was so fresh. I've only been here once and it was take-out (during COVID), so I can't speak to the atmosphere of the restaurant. It took ~15 min to make 4 people's food. The Salmon Teriyaki Lunch Bento w/ Tempura and Salad with Ginger dressing is amazing. It had two LARGE pieces of salmon on a small bed of well-seasoned squash/veggies. The tempura was crispy and other sides were great. Very filling. Ginger dressing is pretty unique, so I would recommend it. Miso soup could have more tofu/seaweed, but given the rest of the meal, I don't mind. All the food came hot. The restaurant itself really close to the Bainbridge port (walkable, but a car would be easier), and is only the first floor, so there is no worry about climbing stairs. Kids menu at a restaurant that is not upscale should not be $18. (That doesn't even include a beverage.) That is absurd. My husband and I shared 2 rolls (Aloha & Forest) and Tonkotsu Ramen. The ramen was the biggest disappointment. It tasted like instant ramen you make yourself in the middle of the night with frozen vegetables, it was seriously lacking in flavor. During my trip to Seattle last year (pre-COVID19 days), my coworkers & I took the ferry for a team field trip to Bainbridge Island and had our meal here at SuBI Japanese Restaurant. It's just a few minutes away by taxi/car from the ferry terminal, but can definitely be walkable. Our table wasn't ready since we got there a bit early, but we didn't wait very long at all despite the restaurant being quite busy. There were 5 in our party and we got warm and cozy in our little booth. The menu was pretty extensive and I had a hard time choosing what to get. They had appetizers, salads, soups, all kinds of different sushi, bentos, and basically all the things! I don't eat raw fish, but I was happy to see that a few baked sushi options were offered. After much debate, I ended up ordering the Baked Scallop California Roll. It was basically your typical sushi roll topped with scallops, imitation crab meat mix, unagi sauce, spicy mayo, & another kind of white sauce. It was delicious and just the kind of sushi I enjoy (baked), lol. All the sauce made it quite rich/heavy after a few rolls and overpowered the scallops, but I still really enjoyed it! Just that roll alone was surprisingly filling. Overall, had a good dinner with my colleagues and the service was very friendly. This restaurant is great! My partner and I took the Ferry over to Bainbridge from Seattle and it was worth the cold ride over! This restaurant goes by reservation only but luckily we were able to get on the list and just wait about 30mins. The ambiance was nice and a bit dark for my liking but sitting at the sushi bar was the best part being able to see the food made in-front of you and getting to chat with your fellow travelers and locals. Food was fresh and the quality was excellent, I tried the iced green tea that came with a lemon slice and my partner got a Shirley temple that was both refreshing and delicious. We were also to talk with the female owner who walked around and made sure everyone was doing well, the servers were attentive and kind! We got some Seared Salmon Nigiri, Eel, Salmon Rolls , and other rolls that were great! Great spot to try out and we will definitely be back!! read more

I know that the owner was upset because she wanted me to pay for it even though I sent it back an did not eat it. tempura was good, and I happily paid for that. note to the owners: 2 bad reviews in a row about the ramen means that it actually IS bad. I left a 2 star review instead of a 1 star review, because the tempura qas fine, and I don't want to bring down their rating because of one item on their menu. Comfy place pretty close to downtown. Pretty decent deals at happy hour. My initial experience here was pretty disappointing - their ramen was one of the few dishes I've ordered out that I could barely get halfway through eating, it was just unpalatably salty. They put a pretty solid amount of effort into presentation across the board but some of the food is just a bit hit or miss. That said, the happy hour karaage felt like a pretty good deal. I liked the seaweed seasoning and solid portion size. Sweet potato fries had a interesting sweet sauce on the side that went pretty well with them. Although you only seem to get 5 or so pieces with the happy hour rolls, they're big enough reasonable enough. The single negi toro roll was pretty tasty. The banana cheesecake chimichanga (xango) was surprisingly good, if you're splitting it with someone it's worth a try - kind of like a hot caramel banana fritter. The normal menu is a good deal pricier and doesn't feel like quite as good of a value, although, compared to some of the other nice sit-down restaurants on the island, $20 for a decent and filling variety of dishes isn't terrible. If you're picky with your Japanese food I'm not sure you'd be impressed, but if you keep your expectations reasonable it's not bad. If you're on the island on Saturday and hankering for sit-down Japanese food, just come at happy hour and try a lot of things with some friends and I think you'll come away reasonably satisfied. read more

The salad dressings are really good and seem to be house made. It's nice that you're given a decent salad, not just bagged iceburg salad with watery dressing. This was a destination restaurant for me and my coworkers, as we enjoy the night playing tourists in Seattle. We took the ferry over to Winslow, and it was a quick cab ride up the hill to Subi. Our friendly waitress took the drink orders, and quickly returned with our selections. A group ordered everything from Sashimi to rolls to Ramen, with a couple of salads and of course miso soup as well. All was very good! Test the freshness you would expect at a good sushi place. The prices were a bit high, but then again Winslow is a little more upscale of a place and it is on an island. Enjoyed my hot sake, assorted tuna nigiri, Hamachi, and roll.
