During my last trip to Boston, I headed over to Comm Ave and Harvard to pick up a vegan tequila sunrise from Bagel Rising. To my surprise, it was gone and Pavement Coffeehouse was in its place. Not knowing whether this was just a re-brand, I went inside and saw my VTS on the menu. While it was mostly the same as before, it didn't taste quite as delicious as I remember it, and I can't help but wonder if the re-brand had something to do it. The Bagel Rising I remember was a bit on the DIY side with sometimes long waits and lack of seating, but the bagels were delicious and even better when made into a sandwich. With the Pavement Coffeehouse change, it looked much more white, clean, and empty. Usually I like this aesthetic but it felt out of place here. As for the sandwich, it tasted drier and less flavorful than any I've had before. Maybe I just got one on an off day but I don't think I'll go out of my way to stop here next time I'm in town. read more

Pavement is always a good stop for a hangover bagel, I highly recommend the rosemary salt bagel or the tequila sunrise sandwich. Not a big fan of the coffee here especially for the price, I'd much rather go to Starbucks or Dunkin'. Often have issues with the bagels barely being toasted/warm when you ask for them to be, but it's a decent bagel for Boston. read more

A small cafe that does not have laptop friendly tables - my laptop is barely hanging on. The coffee here is sour and and the spanish latte is good within the first few sips, but once you hit the bottom you start sipping in something that's no longer liquid... I've never had something solid in my latte before! The cafe is pretty and well lit, but the prices and the drink quality does not impress me. read more

Unlike some of the previous reviews I had a grand experience here. I'm not particularly a fan of the neighborhood, and the things that my wife likes to do in this neighborhood (shop at urban renewal) so this shop stood out to me even more. The word sterile was used in a previous review with a negative connotation. I'd agree that it is sterile; but the affect that clean floors, clean tables, and merchandise aligned properly place puts me at ease. So here's to the best cortado that I've had in Boston in the most unlikely of places. read more

I have known this place since it was Bagel Rising. Even though it is run by Pavement Cooffeehouse now, I am still a frequent visitor, stopping by one to two times a week for late breakfast. The bagels and coffee are absolutely above the standard. What I like more is the working atmosphere in the coffeehouse. Baristas and cooks are so enjoying their work and pleasant to serve the customers. I think that's why I always leave with joy. The reason why I feel it is not a good place for working is because they only provide free Wifi for the first hour. But if you work on something that is no need to access to the internet, it is perfect for you. read more

If you don't get the tequila sunrise breakfast sandwich you need to re-evaluate yourself

I have a love/hate relationship with Pavement, but over the past 2 years the negatives continue to outweigh the positives. I think one of the bigger problems is that I compare it to Bagel Rising (apparently owned by the same owner), and I think Bagel Rising just offered so much more. That being said, the love/hate relationship continues on. The positives: convenient, in the neighborhood, fun vibe, great lighting, warm, cozy, great spot to catch up with friends, do work, people watch , they serve loose tea that is delicious, large menu with many variety of breakfast options The negatives: They claim they serve bagels but they are no where near as good as Bagel Rising, expensive, pricey, sandwiches are just average, the eggs are microwaved, there is always a very long line, service is slow, hipster baristas don't seem happy to be there, there is never any seating. All in all, its convenient and I like the tea better than Starbucks, but I just have nostalgia and wish that they could be more efficient, better tasting food/bagels, and more reasonable prices (or at least improve their food so the value is worth the price). read more

This couldn't be more of a hipster run coffee shop, people standing around not doing anything while a line almost reaches out the door. Stopped by to meet some people today and immediately noticed how hot it was in here--not sure if there is air conditioning? The interior is very hip--I love the big lion mural and how you can see it reflected in the mirror on the wall. The service was good and it was a nice place to stay for a few hours to catch up. I ordered a mint tea and didn't love it, but I don't blame them--tea is a taste I'm still acquiring. It was certainly refreshing, so if you like tea, it could be for you. After getting over the loss of BR I really have to say I'm impressed with Pavement. I'll be honest, it took a few months for them to get into the swing of things, and it feels so much more cozy and less sterile than when it first opened. The plants and little hand written signs remind me of BR and nostalgic feelings start flooding. Then when I bite into that toasted sesame bagel with tofu spread all my worries and gripes with the change-over have melted away. As a loyal customer I'm happy to report the food AND customer service have never been better. So impressed with the new staff, you have to see it to believe it. Excellent all around-- I'm SO happy I didn't write off Pavement. Change is good, change is part of life, change is nice now lets all sit on a yoga mat, breathe deeply, and say "OMmmmmMm" together. read more

Probably the worst coffee shop! Environment: The music is way too loud and the space is really small. If you want a place to study I would not recommend this place. It will be really hard for you to focus! Service: You would think that a Friday afternoon you'll have your order quick. Not so much!!! Cappuccino was good, place was nicely decorated. However, Barista and staff are gross (joking about their nasty health problems loudly) and rude (never mentioned my coffee was ready, just continued joking about his gross health problems). Sadly, Starbucks down the street does a better job than this. I'm disappointed our locally operated coffee shop provides such low quality service. Also, I'm not writing this to receive a free coffee. Having visited this location and the one on the BU campus, I probably won't go back to this one. They already over charge a little for their pretty basic menu, but to add insult to injury they left off the tofu bacon we paid extra for. Unfortunately by the time we noticed it was too late, as we had already left the establishment. If they provided an outdoor table or two we might have still been there and could have just said something then. Obviously due to covid there's no dining in, but other locations at least have a couple of outdoor tables! read more

My experience was cold staff that were depressing to interact with. Moreover, the espresso wasn't bad, but certainly not worth paying the price they ask for. Lastly, coffee shops should be a place to hang out. While this place does have some seating for that, by far it's not enough. It's as if the management realizes that profit can't be made off having extra space for people to sit, and cut corners by buying a very small shop. Never going back! Love the food, and give benefit of doubt but my order which is pretty straightforward has been messed up multiple times. Often a breakfast sandwich missing one of the key components, sausage-when clearly written on the ticket. On a to go order, this has been found out once made it all the way home. A solid spot for coffee and bagels, especially for Allston. If you time it just right on the weekends (pre-9 AM), you can snag yourself a seat. Otherwise, you're better off squeezing out the door and walking home. All that said, I won't blame them for their size! I ordered a $5 egg & cheese bagel, it came out one minute later cold. I sent it back, came up 5 mins later for its replacement on the wrong kind of bagel, sent it back again, got the right one, cold again and with a cold look from the back. Their location in Harvard Square is fantastic, but the people here in Allston need to get their act together and do a better job. (Also, the eggs turned out to be egg patties, which are just never that great- not a great thing for $5+tax) read more

I've given you more than enough chances, Pavement Coffee House. Sometimes reinvention is not a good thing (See for example: Madonna's weird cowboy phase) You do not compare to your previous form, Bagel Rising. Bagel Rising had a line out the door every weekend, but I was ok waiting 20 minutes for a bagel with every other hung over, walk of shame zombie in line with me. Now, there is no line and I still wait 20 minutes. Why? Bagel rising could whip together a tequila sunrise sandwich in about 2 minutes. Suddenly, now with the addition of arugula to their basic egg on bagel sandwich, the time for this to make it to my mouth has increased 10-fold. Are you harvesting each leaf individually from a greenhouse out back? That's my only explanation. Where did the tabasco sauce go? The multitude of bagel sandwich options? Did I sacrifice those for the addition of a few scones and muffins? The coffee is still good and seems unchanged - except for the almond milk. YICK. I know everyone has their preferences and I should embrace differences of opinions in people but please, keep the soy out on the bar, too. Not everyone who wants a dairy alternative likes almond milk - and you have soy - so why not just leave it out? Instead, I have to ask for soy while someone looks at me like I'm insane for putting this in my coffee over some pressed nut in water solution. The bagels seem smaller, too. Oh, and the icing on the cake - I frequently order catering for my team over 100 people at work. Bagel rising used to take large orders. Now, I don't see anywhere on Pavement's website where I could place a catering order. So, there's that missed opportunity. I've found another coffee shop in Brighton on Washington St. that is a longer walk, but you know what, they can pull off a simple egg on bagel with coffee order in under 5 minutes. read more

I was concerned the service would be bad when I read other reviews, but I received my coffee and food promptly even though it was busy. I agree it is tiny and gets crowded quickly so I would not plan to stay long or even to eat or drink at a table. I had the Awakening sandwich and thought it was great - loved the focaccia! read more

I *LOVED* Bagel Rising. When they announced they were closing for a month last summer they ASSURED me it was just for cosmetic changes to make them look like the other stores owned by the same people. THEY LIED. Pavement still has the same bagels that Bagel Rising had, and that's something, worth 3 stars. But they've sucked the soul and most of the deliciousness out of Bagel Rising and returned a sterile, boring, nondescript corporate coffeehouse. Gone are most of their delicious vegan/vegetarian sandwiches, gone are the vegan baked goods and delicious potato salad. Gone is the Goddess dressing they used on many of their sandwiches. Gone are the scruffy hippie boys who used to work there. I MISS IT ALL. I mourn the loss of Bagel Rising. Pavement, you are an inadequate substitute. this is a nice little coffee joint with limited space/seating. Most Pavements I go to are all about the same quality level, this one is no exception. I think the staff here is very sweet and very attentive to the customer. They do a good job and remember faces pretty well. On more than one occasion they've messed up a specification on my order, though so be sure to make it very clear if you don't want something on a fixed sandwich (i.e. no pico de gallo on the tequila sunrise). Favorites are: Tequila Sunrise (new recipe is solid), the Fix, and their coffee is STRONG (can be on the bitter side --you Dunkin lovers beware) Overall, always pleased with my experiences here. read more

As a born and raised New Yorker, I have a lot of opinions when it comes to food. Bagels and pizza are big items that are hardly ever matched outside of NY. That being said, the bagels here are the best I've had outside NY. Coffee is good too. This shop is pretty tiny and they don't want you to stay too long hence 1 hr of free wifi and very sparse charging outlets. Womp womp. Convenient but not the best. The guys that work the counter are usually pretty friendly with no attitude but the girls come off snobby. The food is alright if they make your order with care. Usually the everything bagels are way over salted and in the back they recently started piling on the cream cheese to the point where I have to scrape it off before I eat it. Avocado sometimes is not ripe when I order it and have to pull it off. Pricing is alright but would like to see more TLC with my food and less attitude from the ladies if I'm paying what I'm paying. read more

This place is "trendy" I guess but after knowing and being a part of the era that was Bagel Rising this place blows. The bagels used to be bigger and better and cheaper. Since the rebrand they have become smaller, dryer, and more expensive. Aside from that, the staff now is snooty and pretentious (depends who you get...it's always a gamble). I remember the days when I could count on friendly and great service from staff that didn't act like taking my order was a burden on their day. Honestly I would just rather wait in a long ass line like back in the day if it meant friendly service and better bagels without that STUPID waste of a giant mark up. BUMMED. SMH. read more
