My friends at Pearl out for dinner
    Diane D.

The food is always spot on But maybe due to language barrier, when I called for reservations for 4, and said I would like a table along the wall, directly to left when you enter dining room), I arrive and we have a table smack dab in middle of room She moved us to my request of table along the wall This has happened before, so just be prepared Also, out of Plum wine Again Cmon!!

Pearl of Canton is new to the West Bend scene having just opened on Valentine's Day. Keeping in mind the restaurant is in its beginning days my star rating is based on the food and the building. I'll defer judgment on service until they have a little time to acclimate to being part of the local scene. Pearl of Canton offers sushi, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese pho. A little something for everyone. We ordered several sushi offerings and beef lo-mein. The food was well prepared and was very good. The beef was tender and the different sushi rolls had just the right touch of kick. We ordered a pork steamed dumpling appetizer, but never received it, so no comment there. The building housing the restaurant has been completely remodeled. It is very spacious and well decorated. The restaurant size and style is something you'd expect to feel in a much larger metro community. A great downtown location where a person can take a stroll after dinner. Pearl of Canton has the potential to be a great addition to the West Bend community with the ability to draw in a much larger dining audience from outside the area. (Bear in mind they are new. They have some youthful waitresses, some of which are likely in their first job and maybe their first experience with food from another culture. The owner seemed to be scrambling a bit just to keep her young help on track.) Being new I forgive the service, especially because the food we did receive was quite good. Here's to hoping everything else falls in place in the coming weeks.

This place is hard to review…read more On the one hand, they were like the only place in town open on Christmas. They're really popular, and people came and came and came to pick up call-in and online orders. They also have a 'special diet' menu, where you can order steamed food (for example, chicken and vegetables) with no salt, sugar, corn starch or msg. I had never seen this at any other restaurant and it is really nice for people with chronic health issues. On the other hand, it was super oily in the air, and our jackets had to be washed to get the smell out (this could be why NO ONE else stayed there to eat in their little five-table dining area). Also,...... and I hate to say it, but it needs to be said.... When we got there, there was an older Chinese woman actually hand-stuffing spiced meat into wonton wrappers, at one of the tables in the dining room; and a young boy putting cream cheese-like filling into crab rangoon wrappers. 'Wow, how great - they're not using frozen appetizers, but making them fresh!' I thought. As the restaurant got busier, the two stopped wonton-filling and presumably went to help in the back. Two hours later, when we left, I noticed that they'd left their plate of spiced meat and stack of wonton wrappers just sitting out on the table; along with about 10 more lbs of spiced meat, in a grey plastic shopping bag..... just sitting there on the table, at room temperature, for hours.... So.... if you must come... I guess... just don't order any wontons... :/

But I was worried about my food. I had bought a quart of hot and sour soup to eat later in the week so it was put in the refrigerator. I heated up half in the microwave around 2 PM Monday afternoon and was starting to get sick a couple of hours later. I ended up being sick that night and the next day. I stupidly soups have thrown out so the food but instead I was thinking it was just the shrimp. On Wednesday I had the soup heater up again and sure enough a couple of hours later I'm curled up in stomach pains and throwing up. That was another sick day. So I was very sick 2 nights and then couldn't sleep and had diarrhea issues for the days after. I've never felt that bad from food that I can remember. I'm going to report this to the local health authorities. Hartford needs a healthy Chinese food location. I don't think this place is it. Others in our group had no problem, which is great. But 2 of 8 orders had people get sick.

Since I was in town and recently placed an order at Chinatown to officially review their egg rolls, I thought I would do the same for Hong Kong. My order simply consisted of two egg rolls which contain both pork and shrimp. In my Chinatown review I mentioned they have better quality pork in their egg rolls than the mush you get in grocery store egg rolls. Unfortunately for Hong Kong, their pork is too similar to the grocery store mush that cheap restaurants use. Their shrimp was also chopped into tiny pieces, which made it even harder to find, let alone taste, than the couple of pieces in Chinatown's shrimp egg roll. I was prepared to give Hong Kong a 2/5 since the egg rolls really didn't appeal to me, but on the last bite of the second egg roll I bit into something hard. I posted a picture of it for you to see. To me, it looks like it might be bone from the pork, but I don't know for certain. Regardless, it was a complete turn off and makes me not want to ever go back to Hong Kong Express.
