Food: I visited during happy hour, and I immediately ordered the Oyster Shooters and oysters on the half shell. I've never had oyster shooters before. I was a little apprehensive, but to my surprise, I enjoyed them! They were a salty, spicy mix and I think I would order them again! The oysters on the half shell were local oysters; they were just ok. The oysters were nicely shucked, but the taste was bland. I know oyster texture and taste varies based on where the oysters are from, but I was not impressed with the local oysters. I also ordered the fried shrimp as an appetizer. Those were good! The shrimp were a nice size and there wasn't too much breading that coated the shrimp -- which I liked! For my entrée, I ordered the New England Lobster Roll. It was just ok. Being from DC/MD, I guess I compare seafood from other regions to what I get back home. The Lobster Roll had a little bit of mayo (which is good), but I felt the lobster was hard and chewy. The bread could've been spot on, but it was toasted a little too long; it was hard, not buttery soft like it should have been. This wasn't the best lobster roll by any means. Drinks: I ordered a margarita. Again, I wasn't impressed with the cocktail selection, so I figured one cannot go wrong with a margarita. The margarita with a salted rim was just ok. Nothing to write home about. Atmosphere: Inside is a little small. I can definitely see long waits during the weekend. I love the location -- right by the water / pier. Rolled the dice and went to Pearlz the day *before* National Oyster Day and it was honestly a little creepy - have y'all ever seen Pearlz anything less than packed to the gills? It's normally teeming with oyster aficionados praying that a bar seat opens up, but on this one Sunday, it was a ghost town. We walked in and were immediately seated in a booth (don't hate me). First up, obviously, was a split dozen, Quonset and Malpeque. For the sixth year running, I sniffed but did not try whatever that vinegary lookin' dipping liquid is. Quonsets were a new one for me, and I thought they were spectacular - super salty but with a clean sweet finish. I paired them with the Blüfeld riesling and felt pretty self-congratulatory about that decision. For our entrees, my son enjoyed his fourth order of sliders in six meals, while avoiding and shuddering at the delicious Old Bays-coated housemade chips. My husband went all in on the 3-taco plate, but those suckers were enormous so he ate the two crispy oyster tacos and left the crispy shrimp behind. He also enjoyed the side of nothing that came with the tacos. I bucked with tradition (the fried oyster dinner) and instead had the crab cake appetizer as my main, with a plate of crispy fried Brussels because I am on a personal mission to order Brussels at any venue at which they are offered. I was not a super fan of either, womp womp womp. The crab cakes were plated on top of a mustard drizzle that I imagine was intended as the source of flavor, because the cakes themselves lacked any. In fairness, they were nearly ALL crab, which is impressive, but spice is not the enemy, y'all. I do think there was some sort of weird relish in the cakes, but overall, I found them eminently forgettable. The Brussels sprouts were also a non-event. They lacked so much of what makes an epic fried sprout dish: bacon, quartering the sprouts so they're tender, bacon, abundant crispy outer leaves, bacon, and also bacon. Started with a Dozen Raw and then got the Crab Cake Sandwich. Both were great options and I enjoyed every bite of them. The oysters were fresh and of good size. I didn't get lucky with a bakers dozen, but they were good. I was still a little hungry and saw the crab cake sandwich. I would say 95%+ crab meat, which is rare in most places.
