Unfortunately, this review is not about the coffee ..well except waiting for it! The lines here are usually long but when the cashier is fraternizing with a regular customer when I am next in line was not only annoying but concerning. I heard way too much of the personal conversation between the customer and cashier, she even gave this older man her phone number all as I waiting behind. I even said to her when it was my turn to order that it is not very professional and if she knew him, and she just said he comes in every day and thinks he is harmless. I hope that Peets in CV has some staff meetings to discuss professional customer service not just about keeping the line moving but safe professional business protocols with personnel and disclosing personal business is separate from work. read more

Customer service at Peet's is slipping. Long-time customer who has never had a complaint. Website crashed when I placed my order - order went thru on my credit card but I never received. Called Peet's back two times and they wouldn't give me the 15% Promo code discount I originally used. I'm updating my rating from a 3 to a 4; I starting coming here once a week for about 2-3 hours at a time to study for a grad class, and my experience has been considerably better. My previous review/rating had more to do with a particular barista and not necessarily about the others, or the establishment as a whole. The evening crew are all nice and helpful, and I like coming here to work on homework. Not all of the patrons are doing silent work, though, so headphones are a must unless you have super-human concentration skills. Overall, I feel comfortable updating my rating here. I stop by here in the morning occasionally on my way to work. I think the speed of their service has improved since 2010 because they used to take forever to serve their coffee. I don't come to peet's very often, but tonight left a bad taste in my mouth. My friend told me about their app and that you can get a free drink when you install it. So we went. I had never seen this barista before but she looked miserable. She asked if she could help us and I told her we were gonna use the app as a way to begin conversation, told her my friend mentioned any drink for free. She quickly says, you pay for the first drink, the 2nd drink is free. My friend says that they just gave her the free drink yesterday and it was the first one. The employee says something to the effect that they shouldn't have. So I just order. Didnt really wanna put my number in or check in or learn to use the app because it was weird vibes. Drink order goes well. I add a sandwhich and a cookie. I ask the barista if she can heat up the sandwich I just bought, she says no. I let the moment linger and ask why not. She coldly says, "store policy," as if this is always the term that will make people stop questioning you-in my mind it is the blanket term for we don't need a real reason. I push a little more and say what does that mean, she says we just don't heat up food purchased here it is against policy but if it is something we have back here (behind the counter i guess) they heat it up. Makes no sense. So I grab my stuff, pretty disappointed and throw in a shoulder shrug and say, ". . I mean they do it at starbucks," she rudely replies, "I know, I used to work at starbucks. Different stores. Different policies." And I feel bad walking away and thinking what a b. This was unusual for me. I got a pumpkin soy dirty chai latte and the cashier threw in a free pastry since it was evening (they even have vegan scones!) and the blueberry croissant was delicious. Our friend even asked to add pumpkin and an extra espresso shot in his dirty chai after tasting mine and they were so nice about amending his beverage. Product bad ..not service.... Came it at 6AM....ordered a cup of coffee...after waiting 5 mins in line. Coffee was cold to warm at best..and was all watered down. They gave me another cup from the next urn..same thing....Appears that the heat was not working etc....... I have concluded its EASIER to go to the donut shop, self serve a cup of coffee..and leave within 2 mins. I will never to a Starbucks..and no Peeteo is off my list. Why you have wait absurd amounts of time for bad product at 2 to 3 times the normal price. I am over it. All I want in the morning is a piping hot cup of coffee...fast...with half an half. read more

I live in Castro Valley so I always try to give my business to my community. I love Peet's coffee but I'm not lovin the Peet's here. The people are nice enough but the coffee is blah..the lattes I order never taste the same mostly taste burnt. I work in Berkeley and frequent the Peet's on 4th Street where there, my lattes always taste the same , perfect every time. Been living in Castro Valley for a while, and always went to Starbucks out of habit. I have changed my habit only because of Jennifer the barista. She was exceptional and super friendly. I'm a total Peetnik. A loyal customer. This location however is an exception to the brand. Not because of the drinks but because of the atmosphere. The people here are mostly not nice. I feel like I am imposing on them when I ask for my Cap to be sup dry. What I am used to is people who love their job and are very welcoming. A great way to start my day. I never really had a bad experience at any other Peet's so this rating is not for the corporation. This 1 star rating is specifically for a particular rude employee who obviously does not like her job. I came here yesterday to purchase a pound of coffee for my work coffee club. I could and should have just headed to Safeway which shares this lot and purchase the same coffee on sale. But, I opted to come here to pay $12.95 for pound of Sumatra so I could get my complimentary cup of coffee. There was no line and the girl who assisted me was a real bitch. Trust me, you can't miss her. She's of Asian decent, stick thin, and literally 4 ft tall but with an attitude of bigger than a 6 ft tall man. She barely acknowledged me and didn't greet me. In fact, she looked bothered that she had to help me. She didn't even offer me my complimentary cup of coffee which I specifically came for. I had to ask for it and she didn't ask me if I needed room for cream. She just handed the coffee to me and went about grinding my coffee which she also didn't ask how I wanted it grounded. I had to tell her that I wanted it grounded for a cone filter. While she did that, i went to put cream and sugar in my coffee. When she was done grinding the coffee, she just left the grounded coffee on the counter without saying a word. There was no line or no one there, she could have said "Your coffee's ready" as I stood their like an idiot while she was grinding someone else's coffee. Of course, I had to ask for a bag too from another employee as she just dismissed me. This just rubs me the wrong way. I was not rude or demanding. Does she not realize that your customer's put that paycheck in your hand? I'll be avoiding this location unless she doesn't work here anymore. read more

I love Peets coffee but this store has more than it's share of customer service issues. It has to be a store level management problem here because this is literally the ONLY Peets where I've had poor service, and more than one occasion. What's unfortunate is that I actually tried to give Peets corporate a chance to receive my feedback before even thinking to publish anything here - but they aren't set up for it. They allow the store management (the very source of the problem) to field the complaints about the issues...that the very store (mis) management is creating. Retarded. Ah well, more fodder for the yelp fire if nothing else.... So I go into this Castro Valley store and order a cup of coffee, and the guy at the counter says it will be a little bit because they need to make more. Great, I thinking, I'm getting a fresh cup: ) He prompts the boy who is suppose to be making coffee 'can you start making it NOW?' as if he'd been asking the boy to do this for ages. The boy, never turning around, begrudgingly agrees to start making coffee. As I wait for my fresh cup, I notice there are several workers behind the counter, while a crowd is building up... and the only person attempting to help the customers is the man who took my order. I see a bunch of other workers bumping into each other and doing various tasks,,,but totally ignoring the customers. As I wait, I hear this muffled voice muttering what sounds vaguely like my coffee order. I look over, and the boy (who begrudgingly made the coffee) was turning around to quickly place my cup on the pastry shelf at the ORDER counter (rather than the pickup counter) and then promptly turn his back. Just to pick up my coffee cup, I had to make my way through the sea of people waiting to order. I could only just barely get the attention of the girl in glasses- who was stocking the pastries (and ignoring the customers; which is apparently the default mode at this location). I asked her if she could please let him know to put the coffee at the pick-up window. (f'ing DUHHHHHH..does the customer really have to tell you people this???) She acted as if such was quite far below her and she responded to me with a sarcastic tone 'suuuure...why nooot...'and then she sort of snorted. I'm sure she didn't bother of course, why would she? I'm just a person, and even less than that - a customer,,,so obviously don't rate anything near to the relative importance of the pastries she was toying around with. I desperately want to like this Peet's because it's so close to my home but it's sadly getting one star. The drip coffee seems to always to be old (you know it's old when the digital timers are reading 00:00 and it's been pushed way off to the side of the coffeemaker) or just out and nobody bothered to make a fresh pot when it was quiet and no lines. Also, last Sunday I tried for a drip coffee and saw they were about to make some fresh and told the guy at the register that I would wait. 10min go by and I decide it's time for my fresh hot cuppa, but the other worker girl with smart looking glasses jumps up and beats him to the spout and she loudly produces Decaf, I smile and tell her I wanted regular, so she spins around and pours from some old tank off to the side with the 00:00 timer!! Now she is yelling House blend at the bar! I am shocked and in no mood for games. I calmly tell her I wanted the fresh coffee. The original guy who took my order turned to her and nodded "yeah, that's what he was waiting for.". She dumps the old coffee and filled the same cup with the good stuff by which time I was boiling with unhappiness and angst for my neighborhood Peet's Coffee. Thanks for listening. ( I forgot to mention I ordered a peanut butter cookie to eat while I waited for the coffee to brew. I ate half of it before getting up to ask for my fresh coffee, it was too dry to eat by itself; upon returning to my table after this whole ordeal, I was shocked to find that some other Peet's worker threw my cookie away :( read more

looking at the rest of these reviews, i think i must have caught this store on a bad day. I can't complain about my drink as it was tasty, but the service was horrendous. when i walked in the door no one made any attempt to greet me or help me, there was no one else in line when i arrived. after ordering my drink, a large americano, i saw a woman, who seemed to be in charge, start my drink and hand it off to the barista. i then proceeded to wait for 5+ minutes while she discussed other matters such as condo checks and other various procedures. all the while i found myself thinking damn! this B#$$@ needs to just shut it and pull my shot so i can be on my way. i don't pay nearly four bucks to her some little girl be rude to her fellow employees and neglect her customers. hmmm, that sounds a bit bitter lol. i guess my point is that I've experienced much better from peet's in nearly every other store I've visited, and I've visited many. read more

Preface: I love Peet's coffee. I went to the North Berkeley original Peet's many times when I worked on Spruce St. and have been to the Peet's on 4th St., in SF, and, my favorite, in Alameda on Park St. (Glowing 5 stars to them - even with tons of kids and strollers, long lines, and working dogs, the staff is friendly and fast). Imagine my delight when Peet's opened a mile from my house and practically next door to my business in Castro Valley! But - while I've been there many times, and there are some friendly, helpful servers, many of the staff seem unhappy and downright peeved if you point out that your order is wrong or make a request (like "Please don't wipe the rim of my cup with that dirty rag"). I've tried, I've spent most of my Peet's gift cards there, but today when I ordered my usual half-caf, the server poured the caf-half and let it sit there while she made the decaf. I know the decaf needs to be brewed to not waste it, and it takes a short time, but wait until it's finished, then pour both at the same time. I don't know who the manager is, but if you read this, please find a way to bring this local Peet's up to par. I want to like you, I really do. For now, I'm going to buy some beans in Alameda and brew my own. I should probably cut down anyway... read more

I came in Saturday morning really really wanting a hot cup if their SIGNATURE blend Major Dickinson...I will say it again...SIGNATURE..something doesn't become a signature if it's not popular. And of course NONE WAS BREWED...I was sooooo disappointed AGAIN...this is the second time (Not including the random times I come in during the day for a black tie or a mango ice tea) i have come in early in the morning and they dont have Major...What is more irritating is the lady who helped me didn't even offer to brew me a cup...instead she gave me one choice which was their African blend which was not something I enjoyed. Now my coffee is important to me (along with many others) if you are going to have a signature blend and call it a signature blend...THE BREW IT...Not only do they NOT have signature coffees ready, it's super weak and tastes super watered down. Don't even get me started on the customer service and the dirty ass table the cream and sugar sit on.
