Stopped in for brunch while traveling, and so happy we did - Peggy Sue's is a cute and cozy family-friendly diner with service that feels like family. The space is cozy and fun with travel- themed decor, and the food is fresh, delicious, and perfect comfort staples at a reasonable price. Highly recommend the skillets - the Spicy Chorizo was excellent and I also super enjoyed the Porky Pig Skillet with extra vegetables. Can say I never had sausage gravy on a skillet before and it was perfectly balanced. It's a fan-favorite for a reason! Also, the biscuits are light and fluffy and delicious. A classic small town diner with classic diner food. Breakfast and lunch. It's been open in one incarnation or the other for many decades. It's a fixture in Downtown Chesterton, such as it is. Often busy with locals. It's diner food at a good price. Not huge but adequate portions, but most customers really do not need to eat huge portions anyway. (There is an obesity epidemic in this country!). Service is usually good. Parking in back and on the street. Air conditioned. Coffee is standard diner coffee that one finds in thousands of similar joints and most restaurants (robusta beans- the cheap stuff), which lacks flavor although it is hot. If you doctor your coffee, makes no difference since you can't taste the coffee anyway. I opt for orange juice or ice tea usually. Has a bench out front if you want to sit for a spell. It's been awhile since I checked out the restroom (there is a comment on that), so I do want to survey as that is what the cooks and wait staff use- and it's important that the facilities be spotless with soap, towels, etc., to avoid disease vectors migrating into the food from the cook or servers' hands. They do not have "bussers", so your waitress will be handling your food and the last customers' dirty dishes, which is a common restaurant money-saving practice that I do not think should be allowed anywhere. We've got immigrants who need work, so let's get them a job instead of chasing them with masked men. read more

Now I've been here three times and I haven't had a bad meal yet. First off I love town of Chesterton IN. Who would think a judgmental city clown like me would be wooed in by the charm of a small town like this but man was I ever. I go back at least few times a month. At Peggy Sue's Diner it is what it sounds like, a true slice of Americana diner. The decor centers around Route 66 of which I'm a huge fan and a huge regular having driven it dozens of times and never tire of it. I imagine Peggy Sue has as well. The decor with license plates on the wall and maps of Rt 66 is spot on in a very real diner setting not a touristy spot you might see elsewhere. All f the decor screams road trip. This is the real deal. This place is what the great American road trip is all about. Discovery and the real America. As a side note, the first time there we were there when Peggy Sue same in and greeted guests and sat at a few tables and chatted the hometown folks up. She kind of reminded me of the hot redhead Flo on the 70's sitcom 'Alice'. Ya know, "Kiss my grits". There were plenty of locals which tells you about it's authenticity. We didn't get to chat it up with her but I hope one day we do get the opportunity. We are a couple regular guys who just happen to look like 'loan collectors' but are not haha. Some of the places we go we stick out like sore thumbs; but that's what makes it fun right? Point being, we're can seem less than approachable at first sight but once you talk to us we're chatty Kathys the both of us. The service was really friendly. All three times there I saw the same two young women who I imagine were local themselves. Walk in. they all say "Hey boys". I mean Hello and thank you seem to be a staple at Peggy Sues unlike so many places that don't even know you're there. I wish I knew their names they deserve HUGE shout outs. They make you feel at home at Peggy Sue's. The food is excellent. Homemade, fresh and American staples. Their breakfast is a deal and real ingredients. The French toast awesome. I'm not certain but I am pretty sure the sausage is homemade or at very least sourced locally homemade. Now their biscuits and gravy are bomb! Ya gotta try 'em with your eggs. They also do an excellent open faced sandwich which is a must try. Their deserts are also off the charts. Peggy Sue's is the kind of place you'll return to time and again. Read about it on Yelp and decided to give it a whirl as most of the dining options off the freeway were the usual big box fast food places. It was easy to find, with free parking across the road by the park. It is situated in small town America which is very charming. We received a warm welcome and the waitresses were quick to bring us coffee and water, and take our order. The prices were laughable compared to Hawaiian pricing, only $8 for eggs benedict!! Waitress never came and checked on us not even once! Finally she walks by and I ask if we would be getting our breakfast soon. It had been an hour since we sat down, she said "oh, I will check on that". 10 minutes later she doesn't return to inform us what is going on at all but I see her scrambling back in the kitchen! Random, stop today!!! Staying in Michigan decided to go to Bass Pro shop, and hubby got hungry, so I hit the next exit searched for dinner, and here we are. PEGGY SUE DINER !!! LET me start with my initial feelings of walking in !!! Soooooooo cute even customers said hello !!! I felt like I had just stopped by families home. Now, in to the food. Hubby got 2 over medium eggs, white toast, and pancakes!!! All that matters with that meal to me is the pancakes !!! Let me tell you they are ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL!!! They are hot, buttery melt in tour mouth. I got a Chesterton omlete. It has sausage,green peppers, and onions topped with cheese. I also chose hashbrowns. Another great choice. I'll say this to start. Peggy Sue's nails the nostalgia vibe. Very 50's diner feeling. The food was very good and delivered hot to the table. I had a skillet and my wife had the chicken fried steak. Both were delicious. Even the iced tea was pretty good. Now the bad news, it took about 50 minutes for us to get our food. Possibly short staffed, but restaurants need to start warning guests if that's the case. Otherwise, they just look disorganized. Also, the food was delivered and we didn't have silverware. Finally, and I have to mention it, the place was pretty messy. The floor was covered in bits of trash. I may give them another chance because the food was good. read more

Ordered the biscuits & gravy (I try to get that everywhere I go for breakfast - when out of town) a they were ok. This diner always has good food. I normally get breakfast here, but have also grabbed a sandwich at lunch. The service is friendly, sometimes a bit slow when they are really busy. This is so disappointing one of the only breakfast places in town it used to not be to bad a couple years ago. But now the staff and service is terrible. Me and my dad were going out to breakfast and we had to wait an HOUR for our food and about thirty minutes for refills. I'm usually not to picky about how long it takes and I know it's hard to help A lot of people when there are only 3 workers. But come on this outrageous the server was very rude to us at first and then fixed up her act. Also the owner of this establishment was just goofing around and so loud and obnoxious! Went to eat Sunday breakfast w my neighbor sat for 50minutes didn't get past ordering food and water brought to the table. Asked for waitress mult times and she did not come bk. Finally she we were able to flag her down explained the cups of water have been empty and we were trying to order OJ w our food while asking if we would be served soon (beings others that came after us were already finishing up their food) nobody came to check on us nobody apologized for the time taken so far. No no instead she "canceled our order" which I'm sure it's bc she never put our order in and when asked to speak w a manager her reply is we are just small diner and I am the manager. such a shame that place has gone all the way downhill I can promise I'll never even go a to go order from there let alone actually eat there. I was right about the cheap part. The décor is great. My dining companion dudes got a kick out of the classic cars theme. I wish the food would have been as impressive. Sadly, my biscuits and gravy were gross. The biscuits were hard and the gravy was flavorless. I take that back. The sauce was flavored, or spiced, with a ton of pepper. The skillets are equally bland. Our waitress never returned. They have it posted that it's more of a relaxed type vibe where you should feel free to get up and get things for yourself, so we did that for the butter I'd asked for and never received. But no one ever came back around again and we had to ask for our bill, too. No one stopped to top off waters. No one asked if our meal was satisfactory. No one asked if we wanted anything else, and I was considering giving dessert a go. No way will I return. read more

Ya know the movie Groundhog Day? The small town that they're in? Yupp, that's where I thought I was when we drove through after a crazy night of outlet shopping. This main street in Chesterton is sooo cute. There's even a gazebo in the middle of the park, decorated with Christmas bows already! Super precious. Anyway, this diner is perfect. The breakfast menu is extensive and CHEAP. Biscuits and gravy were only 2.75 and one egg was 75 cents. You'll NEVER see that anywhere in the Chi. The coffee was also one of the best cups I've ever had. Attribute it to my lack of sleep, but it was delicious. My friends also broke down and got some hot chocolate...I think the heaping mound of whipped cream was really what won them over. I also enjoyed all the different state license plates on the walls. My most favorite one, though, was one from Illinois that said, "Men Lie." Ahhh, truth. Great pit stop on the way home! read more

I had the corn beef hash and aside from the portion of it being the smallest I've ever seen it was a bit too salty for my taste. The coffee lacked the taste of coffee seemed more like colored water. My husband and I went to Peggy Sue's after the 2022 Fourth of July parade for breakfast. We sat in the booth for 15 minutes with no service at all. There were 2 others booths full of customers that arrived after we did and we watched them ignored as well. Stopped by Peggy Sue's on our way to Michigan to check out wedding venues. Boy Yelp! certainly steered us in the right direction. Parking was easy, but we walked in and the place was packed! Sure it was a Saturday - but it felt like a cozy little diner that you'd find tucked away in the big city. We waited less than 5-10 minutes for our table and we were greeted by the friendliest service I can remember in quite some time. The waitress suggested the biscuits & gravy....but I went for a skillet and I wish someplace in the city had one nearly as good. My fiancé had the biscuits & gravy - let's just say he can't wait till I plan the next trip to Michigan to look at wedding venues. Quick recap: Coffee was great - strong and fresh Bacon was crispy - not overcooked, just the way I like it Hash browns - my personal favorite! YUM! Went to Peggy Sue's for a late breakfast and lunch. Most of the outer booths were full. We sat at the diner counter. The back counters were messy and disorganized. Milk and orange juice left on the counter instead of in the refrigerator. Three waitresses and only one knew what was going on. That poor woman had to tell the other waitresses what to do and how to ring the orders in to send to the kitchen. I ordered chicken salad with no bread and no potato. My husband ordered the spicy chorizo skillet with two fried eggs and no onions. My chicken salad was delicious! However, my husband's skillet was not so good. Apparently they ran out of chorizo sausage and without telling the waitress or customer they substituted what appeared to be ground beef. When he mentioned it to the waitress, she proceeded to tell the waitress/cook who prepared his meal. She apologized and said they ran out of chorizo. She did take the item off our bill. I would not recommend this restaurant. Unless you like a long wait and disorganization which is too bad. This place could be fixed up and be a hopping 50's diner. read more

I stopped here on a road trip. It started out friendly enough, but I should have realized there would be a problem when the waitress brought me an empty coffee cup and it took over 3 minutes and my waving frantically, to get it filled. After I ordered and specifically requested very crispy potatoes, my order came. Not only were most of the potatoes under cooked, I was told they did not have my toast. I also requested hot sauce which never arrived. Although I did see them deliver hot sauce and toast to other tables where the waitstaff clearly knew the patrons. When someone finally came by to ask if everything was OK, i was already 2/3 finished with my meal and no longer wanted to eat toast as a dessert. The waitress did apologize which is something.
