I work next door and frequently order food to run over and grab during my shifts. The staff is always friendly and the food is always hot.

Food is OK, but service is horrible and count on the order never being correct. Have finally learned my lesson.

But wait. My go-to spot suddenly closed, leaving me in a bit of a lurch! Where do I go?! We all have our favorite Chinese restaurant, and when we can't go to that one there's a little bit of a conundrum. I take American Chinese food seriously - which really means I order the same thing 98% of the time because that's my GO TO meal. As an intellectual, that is of course General Tso's chicken. Beijing Tokyo blends north and south Asia into a rather cozy, strip mall location. One person was talking obliviously on her cell phone, while the sushi Chef took orders. Until Yelp asked me if this place was romantic, I hadn't actually thought about it that way. But it is a little romantic. The tables are close together, the light is low, even if this place was full it would be... Cozy. A Chinese restaurant that's cozy is a very short leap to romantic. You can have a conversation here. I ordered my usual and waited about 10 minutes. The GTC was excellent. It had spice and flavor, but not too spicy. The fried rice was delicious. Good portion size and a good price. Two egg rolls and the total came to $25.25. No surprises, nothing out of the ordinary. If you had told me this had come from my favorite- now sadly closed - Chinese restaurant, I would have never known the difference. And there in lies what I think makes a good Chinese restaurant: predictability. American Chinese food is a distinct cuisine with the same menus, the same waving Buddah and melamine plates. The difference is quality, and the taste of your favorite meal. I am sad that my favorite place closed, but Beijing Tokyo is my new Chinese food restaurant, and I think it's pretty darn good.

My takeout was ready in timely fashion, and there was definitely some quality there. My kung pao tofu was a little sweet as the dish normally is, but also amply spicy as I requested and came with plenty of peanuts, extra-crispy tofu, and a few other vegetables. Lo mein was a fairly straightforward soy-garlic affair, though I must say I appreciated the option to add some tofu to that as well. My spring rolls came sauceless and were fairly basic and cabbage-y, but a decent way to round out a meal. I appreciated their thorough vegetarian labeling; of course some things were not available to me that I wish they would make vegetarian, but the most important thing is being able to make informed decisions. I skipped the ma po tofu this time, but they claim it offers genuine numbing sensations and they did enough to convince me that it might be worth coming back to try.

There wasn't a single dish we didn't enjoy! My family and I really loved the food here. The vibes were also great, such a nice place to hang out, catch up, and enjoy a meal together. Mama Chang is the perfect place for a group dinner. Come hungry, order a bunch of dishes to share,…read moreand you'll still leave with plenty of leftovers. Our group of five sampled a great variety from the menu, including the Hot & Numbing Tofu Skin, Crab Roe Soup Dumplings, Cucumber Salad, Lettuce Wraps, Cumin Fish, Stir-Fried Beef Tenderloin, Crispy Pork Ribs with Scallion Crisps and Mixed Grain & Purple Rice, Stir-Fried Beef with Chilies, and Kung Pao Chicken with white rice. The standout for me was the cumin fish. It was fried perfectly--crispy without being greasy--and the cumin added great flavor without overpowering the dish. The crispy pork ribs lived up to their name and had a nice kick of spice. The cucumber salad packed a serious garlic punch, which I really enjoyed. The Hot & Numbing Tofu Skin was something completely different from what I expected. It's sliced into long ribbons that resemble noodles or pasta. The flavor was excellent, although the texture took some getting used to. The only dish that fell a little short was the stir-fried beef tenderloin, which could have used a bit more seasoning. Everything else was delicious. The portions are enormous. At first the prices seemed a little high, but once the food arrived it made perfect sense. Every entrée was easily enough for two meals. One thing to keep in mind is that rice is ordered separately and isn't included with the entrées. Service was excellent throughout our meal. We arrived for lunch and didn't realize they close between lunch and dinner (lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). We ended up staying until about 2:45, and the staff never made us feel rushed even though they had technically closed. They greeted us promptly, took our drink orders, and gave us plenty of time to look over the menu without hovering. The restaurant is tucked away on the ground floor of an office building, so it's easy to drive right past if you aren't looking for it. Parking was plentiful, and the oversized booths comfortably fit all five of us without feeling cramped. If you're dining with a group and want to sample a variety of authentic dishes, Mama Chang is definitely worth the visit.
