I'll start off by saying generally I'd avoid this sorta place. Between the fake type of old Soviet-esque propaganda imagery and the mash-up of random Cyrillic lettering generally gives me a headache and always seems just odd to me, but alas I found myself missing home, so I decided to give it a try. There are few things that are as simple and nice as a big bowl of hot pelmeni, with sour cream and dill. (Lots and lots of dill. If you can still see your food, it's not enough!) This place provides. The pelmeni are hot, juicy and plentiful. They taste fresh and homemade. (which they are, as I found out.) There's a variety of kinds, with some traditional and not traditional condiments. (I strongly recommend the traditional version, it is authentic and delicious.) My only "complaint" is, I wish they had my favorite cherry vareniki, but we can't have it all and that's okay. Mostly I thought the twist in some of the stuff was really fun and exciting. It's not something I'm used to, most of the Russian restaurants in my life are the big family style events and pelmeni are kinda a simple dish that isn't usually as exciting as they make it here. So to have that fun with it, was super cool. I think it makes Russian/Ukrainian food super accessible to those whom otherwise may not be as familiar with it. All in all, thanks to filling this void in my soul while here in the PNW. I'm grateful I gave this place a chance and it did not disappoint in the least. read more

When I lived in Bellingham, I always got beef Pel'Meni after a fun night out. I went to Bite of Seattle last year and found out they are opening a new Pel'Meni place in Capitol Hill, which I got really excited about because I usually go out at Capitol Hill! I first tried this at the Bite, and it brought back so many memories. This place definitely gives you a variety of sauces to mix in with your dumplings, but I've always stuck with the Classic because that is what I fell in love with originally. Still very good, though when I got it recently, I felt like it was missing something... I probably should've put more curry powder. I also like how you can choose between savory or sweet sauces, sides, and even alcoholic drinks! Not the biggest place to hang out but still a very chill environment. I definitely want to try more things from the menu when I have the chance! They are open until 2:30am every day, and you can choose to dine in or take it to go! I like how they already put some sour cream in your dish because I looooove sour cream! They also give you more on the side if you're someone like me. Friday night around 11 pm and the place was still poppin with diners! We ordered the Khan and the mac and cheese and both were delicious. You can get beef dumplings, or vegetable ones - we ordered with beef for both dishes. We especially liked the Khan - the vinegary sauce and crunchiness of the cabbage and fried wonton skin, paired perfectly with the warm, soft, meaty dumplings. Thought this would be a great experience as we had a pleasant conversation with the cashier while ordering our regular order of "El Jefe." It's been close to forty minutes later and still have no clue how it tastes. I walked out after I watched someone walk in 25m post order & get food 5m later. This type of Russian dumplings was the late night snacks of choice up in Bellingham so when I heard the recipe was brought down to Seattle to the Fremont location, I would always eat it when I was near by. Had a happy hour recently at the near by Rachel ginger beer so I had to get some dumplings to snack on. There is alot more choices to the dumplings with the only option being beef or potatoes. I went with the bacon onion relish and it was a great addition to the familiar dumplings of my younger years. If you never had this type of dumplings before, this place is worth a visit, though the time I went it took a really long time to get out my order, but they were nice enough to give me a free dumplings card for next time. read more

These dumplings are so addictive!! They are beyond good. They come with a side of what my bf and I call "better than sour cream" because it's extra thick and creamy. Some of them come with rye bread too which is perfect to soak up the extra rice vinegar and sour cream. The fries are pretty good too. My bf and I have really late schedules and usually don't end up eating dinner until 12 or later so the fact that they serve food until 2:30 saves us from eating terrible fast food! I would say my only complaint is the cocktails are expensive for a counter service style restaurant and as strong as I would like for the price. The food is great tho so def come here for late night food. Also they get major bonus points for giving you two free sauces with the fries. I'm a big sauce person and everywhere I order fries I have to ask for extra aoili and they always charge like 50 cents for it!! Came here pretty late (around midnight) feeling quite hungry. They have two happy hours daily, and we happen to be there during the later one of the happy hours. Decided to try the classic with potato dumplings, and the razorback with beef dumplings. For happy hour, you get 10 pieces per order. The classic has strong pungent flavors dominated by spiciness and sourness. The razorback is savory and hardy. They were surprisingly filling for such small dumplings! Personally, I prefer the potato dumplings - they have a softer texture and lighter taste; as for the added flavors, I prefer the razorback over the classic - it's smoother whereas the classic has a sharp vinegar flavor. read more

I haven't had non-Asian style dumplings before, so I can't comment on the authenticity of these relative to other Russian dumpling places. To my knowledge, Pel'Meni is unique to Seattle in offering this style. The dumplings are hot, filling, and delicious. There are also a lot of varieties available, although my favorite is the classic (sour cream, butter, curry, spicy sauce, and cilantro). Each dumpling is pretty small, but they give you enough in one regular portion ($8) for a hearty dinner. The kid's size is $6 and the large is $10. You can order either beef or potato-filled dumplings, but I'd recommend getting a mix of both for variety-- definitely worth the extra $1. I also really liked the sweet and spicy carrot salad; the vinegar taste complemented the dumplings really well. This portion of Capitol Hill east of Cal Anderson has easier street parking and I'm usually able to find a spot right in front without any issue. read more

I like that you can do half and half with the dumplings so I got half potato and half beef dumplings. The relish was PHENOMENAL and definitely felt like an indulgence by the time I finished it. A tad salty so pair it with a cold beer or a Rachel Ginger Beer and you're good to go. They had gluten-free dumplings for my friend which made her and her stomach happy. The place is small, with limited bar top seating and a few tables; you order at a counter. I wouldn't recommend parties over 4 or 5 to eat there because of the small space. The traditional dumplings which are boiled and sprinkled with curry powder were delicious! So soft and juicy but slightly tangy. Great combo of flavors going on. My friends and I came here since one of them lives close by, and we each had a different entree. I had the Greek style, and it was an interesting combo; I've never heard of a Greek twist on dumplings (probably because the variety I've tried are all Asian-style), but they were delicious! Definitely a different twist. The food was good, but the reason I'm giving this place five stars is because of the service. The place was empty when our party got there, and the employee that served us was quiet but definitely started our party for the weekend with strong and delicious drinks. He probably could tell that my friends and I were gathered in Seattle for a reunion after not seeing each other for a couple years, so he made sure we got loose and fun with potent, potent drinks. They have missed my salad twice! And this last time I did not get bread with my classic, neither did my friend - though it was noted on the receipt. The wait time just to have my order taken was slow considering I was literally the only person in line ready to order. We found this place after a night out and being sad that our favorite Navajo Taco truck was nowhere to be seen...and it ended up being for the better! I got the beef dumplings, classic, which doesn't really seem like a 'classic' preparation but awesome nonetheless: sour cream, butter, (and here's where it starts to diverge) curry, hot sauce, and cilantro. $10 for a large bowl, which was fairly big and deep. And you can get gluten free for only $2.50 more! For those such as me that are not necessarily gluten-free but white flour averse, these were perfect! We also got an order of regular Greek dumplings (with chicken!) ($8) and Nutella dessert dumplings ($6). Also both generous-sized and very good! Service was as good as it gets. The person at the cash register did not flinch at people coming in half an hour before closing, was very happy to answer our questions and make recommendations, and promptly served us. If you like dumplings a lot I suppose this place might be good but to me it lacked a lot. Not only in flavor but in texture and quantity. I understand the gf/df dumplings have a different texture but the filling was so miniscule that you couldn't taste any of it. And the sauce was so over powering. Yes the sauce is probably the point but it wasn't good. I tried the original and something with bacon and the bacon was good but the sauce with it wasnt. The drink was super strong (cool) but not good. And though you are supposed to order first there was no sign that I could find indicating that. It was a confusing ordering rocess in the end. The lady that was there was helpful but sounded like she hadn't tried much of the drinks so she wasn't that helpful in picking one out.
