Came here last Sunday and had an excellent breakfast. The mixed basket of freshly baked goods was very delicious (my fave was the banana bread...and they were free!); coffee was bold; staff were super friendly; relaxing atmosphere whether you sit inside, front or side patio. We didn't feel rushed even though there were a couple of parties waiting to be seated. The food came in good time. The kalua pork Benedict was excellent. We also ordered fried eggs over medium and they were done perfectly. The sourdough toast was freshly baked and perfectly toasted. Breakfast prices were fair. And the bathroom was clean! We plan to go back one more time tomorrow before we leave Pahoa (we would have gone today except they're closed on Mondays). read more

I love this place, the food is delicious and most of it is fresh off a local farm. I'm crazy about their hollandaise sauce which they put on a delicious veggie crepe dish as well as their eggs Benedict selection. It's a great place to sample a variety of local fruit if you're passing through. They have fresh juices and the service is great. read more

Out of this world! Drove over from the Volcano House and well worth the drive! The mango coconut blintzes are spectacular! Also the local fruit sampler to start the meal was amazing . Definitely would come back if here for more time. read more

No stars is appropriate but YELP requires a minimum of 1 Star. We went here for breakfast after hearing so many good things about it (so we thought). Pele's Kitchen is seat yourself so we patiently waited for a table to open for 3. A few minutes later a couple of bigger tables left and opened up. We stood besides one of the tables and waited to have them clean it. We waited 8-10 minutes. Not once were we even acknowledged nor eye contact was ever made with us. Not even a simple hello or we'll be right with you. Absolutely no service from the waitstaff (2 females and one male). The owner was the only busy one in the restaurant cooking in he kitchen. I recognized him via his photos on their Facebook page. If you don't take care of your customers someone else will. This is the worst service I've ever had ANYWHERE. As we left Pele's Kitchen, the 3 available tables still were not bused/cleaned. Not sure how this establishment stays in business. The owner should take notice of his waitstaff's lack of customer service skills. Never coming back here and will make sure to tell everyone about this beyond awful experience here at Pele's Kitchen in Hilo. This was beyond disappointing. read more

Pele's Kitchen is one of my favorite things about Pahoa. I've been eating there since I lived in town in 2012, and recently went back for a visit. Everything about breakfast there is amazing. You can't go wrong. I love the Pahoa scramble, I love the gluten free pancakes with mac nuts, I love the fruit and nasturtium flower garnish on the plates. The coffee is great, the atmosphere is great. I love Liz and Stephen as restaurant owners and locals. They exude so much aloha. Prices are so fair considering Stephen makes every part of every dish from scratch. If you are in Pahoa, Pele's should be on your list of places to go! read more

Average at best. We went there for lunch and were basically rushed by the owner to eat and get out because they close at 1pm! They also did not have many gluten free options short of a salad. They reluctantly added chicken to my salad (and the chicken was dry and over-cooked.) Maybe their breakfast is better. Interior is pretty bad with tons of dirt, fake flowers covered in dust and lots of spider webs. It seems the owners are quite lazy and have let their business slide. read more

Wow! That's all I can say! A taste of heaven IN heaven! We sat on the outside deck area and were treated to the freshest ingredients in an outrageously amazing breakfast. I would recommend anything on the menu because it's all freshly made. I found out later that Stephen and Liz, his wife, grow the fruits and vegetables in their own garden! I had the breakfast burrito - fantastic. We also tried the banana and macadamia nut pancakes - wonderful. This is a local spot only open for breakfast and early lunch, so don't miss it. Let me just say, I absolutely love this place and have always came here to get my delicious jungle breakfast! But this past Sunday I noticed an issue between staff that happened close to closing while I was eating with my wife . A female cook had come out and had starting yelling at another server in front of the ENTIRE restaurant, she also seemed to have slammed something down. The servers sitting at the table had told her to go outside and talk it out. I've seen the cooks and have never noticed this female before but she seemed unprofessional. The whole situation made me uncomfortable. If the situation continues between staff I would not like to come back here, if I wanted to see bullying I'd go back to high school. We usually grab breakfast at another location in Pahoa but this morning we decided to try Pele's Kitchen. At first we were a little dismayed that our waitress didnt bring us coffee and took someone else's (who came in after us) order. But from there on I was pleasently pleased. Coffee was head and shoulders above our "other" place. Food was good and reasonable. We didnt get a basket of breakfast pastries like was mentioned in other reviews but maybe that has been discontinued. The salsa was really good. We are going back again with a group that we usually have breakfast with and I hope it is as good as today! read more

My wife and I stopped here for our first breakfast on the big island. They set the bar very high for the rest of the trip. There was a very home like feel to the place, and everyone was extremely friendly. The breakfast was one of the best I have had. The best part of the meal was the home made bread. A resident on Maui, visiting the big island for the weekend we were told by one of the boat tour captains about this restaurant and we were so happy we listened. Angel was our server, she was friendly ,efficient and even though she was busy we never felt neglected. Food was on point too, the vegan gluten free pancakes were absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!!! Pahoa is a funky little Hawaiian hippie town located on the south east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. If you are looking for a healthy, tasty, organic homemade meal, Pele's is the place. Priced right, very simple menu, but delicious! While we were there we witnessed the chef (call him 'uncle') buying fresh vegetables from a local right outside the restaurant. I've had his homemade ravioli for dinner, light and excellent. His chicken fried steak for breakfast...made perfectly. Also, their fruit bowl is not only beautiful but gives you a variety of tastes that this incredible island has to offer. read more

Hit and miss. For lunch, had the BLT. Bread was overwhelming, bacon and flavor was absent. Lettuce was twice as long as the bread... A miss... The breakfast (eggs bennie, crepes, blintzes) were great. wonderful waitress ( but also also hit and miss...), and the service was good. Don't bother trying to talk with the skinny, butch haircut haole with glasses. We tried to complement him on the food, stating "great food!". He snapped back, farting out of his mouth "NO!, it is only good if you want to kill yourself. I don't eat cooked foods. I just eat raw foods!". Nice sales pitch. We have been coming here for a while, food is really good and is a good price too. Service could be better tho, sometimes we are forgotten about and never get to order our meal. This morning we waited over 10 minutes for our order to be taken. I got up and told one of the waitresses and she said okay...another five minutes pass and no one comes, so we just got up and left. Great place! Food and service were amazing- Jake that works there was friendly and offered helpful tips others in the area might not offer up to tourists. Even gave us his personal number if we needed help later. I can't recommend this place enough. My dad had ono eggs Benedict and the boyfriend had a Swiss and ham omlette. Both too die for! I won't be reviewing the atmosphere, because if you've ever been to Pahoa you know what to expect. For some it may be a little funky. All the folks that worked there seemed to be family and/or friends, lots of them coming and going and socializing with each other. The food was imaginative and everything was presented nicely with a special touch. Good local ingredients including fruits and edible flowers. However, I can't taste presentation.The flavors were lacking in pretty much everything. Looked great, but greasy (especially the potatoes) and under-seasoned, to our taste. One of the best dishes I have ever tasted ! The omlettes were huge and delicious . We had them made with goat cheese . Edible flowers and fruit. Priced very reasonably for Hawaii . The customer is always right is the how the saying gos. Well thats just not true here. You can not get it YOUR way. I asked for a half order of eggs Benedict because a whole order is far too much. The answer? NO! Ive never heard of such a thing. So I got the whole one and fed half to my dog. They said they made the Hollindaise fresh which is a requirement so I asked if the chef could make sure he put a dash of Tabasco in mine while it was blending. The answer? NO! I asked to speak with the chef when he had a minute. They were not busy. The answer? NO. The breakfast in general is pretty good as long as you stick to the basics. Several months after the eggs Benedict experience I went back and ordered it again. The sauce tasted pasty and bland and really much like baby food. Really bad so I asked the waitress if the sauce was still being made fresh? She stumbled on her words and lied saying it was. I said I seriously doubt it because it tastes like baby food out of a package. She then said "your right. it is out of a package. "So the integrity of this place is outta wack. The interior is small and cramped and there is no wall between it and the old stinky bar so the fueng shui is awful. It dosnt feel like a real restaurant. f we had better choices in Pahoa I would boycott this place. read more

As a local usually this is a great spot for breakfast. However, their quality is starting to slip. They have started cutting corners, and it is showing. I went in for breakfast this morning and I noticed the coffee was on the weak side. Usually they have strong coffee with a deep flavor to rival starbucks, but today it was watered down diner coffee. Then, what took the icing on the cake is after I finished half of my breakfast, I noticed a hair in my plate. Im no snob, so I wanted to overlook it, but on closer inspection my plate was FULL of them! It appeared to be dog hairs or something?! I couldn't believe my eyes! Since the restaurant was so full of people, I didn't want to embarrass the staff by pointing it out in front of other customers, but I became so grossed out I immediately asked for the check.
