This is an unassuming place in Bellingham with beautiful architecture and interesting food. When we came in, we were expecting to be seated and given a menu, but it's actually a "walk-up" and let them know whether you want potato or meat pierogi. That's it. Easy Peasy. While we waited for the food, we enjoyed the beautiful art and could watch the cook at work, even though we're only talking boiling pierogi :) I was a little taken aback that the food was all "to go" in a container, but I'm trying not to judge too much. The food was really good -- spicy, small pierogi with a hit of sriracha sauce, a plastic container of cold sour cream and a thick piece of Russian bread. I've got to toss this place a few stars for its uniqueness; I mean, when's the last time you saw a place selling Russian dumplings? I also liked the record player scratching the vinyls in the corner, and the woman who served me the dumplings was friendly and helpful. With that being said, I was a little let down by the dumplings at Pel' Meni. I don't mind a limited menu, as long as the establishment executes it well. The mix of beef and potato dumplings I ordered were pretty delicious once slathered in sour cream, hot sauce & cilantro, but on their own, they were bland and over-cooked. There's something about breathing in the steam and chatting with the slightly-baked rocker chick (listening to the vintsge record they have going) while she makes your individual batch of dumplings in this high-celinged empty room that makes it oh-so-bellingham. Dumplings are delectable and the cilantro, dusting of spices, and Sriracha make it. Potato is just as good as meat so take your pick. read more

Even though they only have two options on the menu, Pel' Meni's is by far my favorite restaurant in Bellingham. They have beef or potatoes dumplings. Each order of dumplings comes with a slice of bread and a mild seasoning on top with some herbs. You can also get some cups of sour cream (I tend to ask for 2-3 because they go EXTREMELY well with the dumplings). There's your standard assorted cans of soft drinks (Pepsi, sprite, water, etc.). What really separates this joint from all the others in Bellingham is its really relaxed atmosphere. The minute you walk in you'll hear a record player playing an old classic album from Journey, Madonna, Michael Jackson, etc. Guests are welcome to sort through their large collection of records and play one. There are pieces of art for sale hanging on the walls that local artists have made. The seating is a bit small and people tend to sometimes leave the door open. Overall, a GREAT place to go for a late-night snack (especially after a few drinks downtown). read more

Ok so it's plain and simple, russian dumplings - meat or potato. $5 a box and you get a good serving of russian dumplings. The guys in there know their stuff... and they better, their selection is pretty focused. But no matter how ugly the line can get in this place, the service is always efficient and kind. The dumplings. I don't know what exactly makes it Russian, but I can tell you that it's delicious. It's made with butter, cilantro, curry... and some other stuff that makes it GREAT. It comes with a slice of rye bread, and you can drizzle more stuff, which I think (and hope) is just an olive oil mixture? and some of their hot sauce. They also have a good supply of sour cream that you can add to your dumplings. One of my friends swears that it's some kind of magical one-of-a-kind sour cream that you can't get anywhere else. Quite honestly, this place has the grub. At a cool $7 a pop it's pretty affordable and I always leave with a full belly. They let you load up on as much sauce and sour cream as you want and let me tell you it is creamy heaven! It's the perfect food for when you're a little drunk, a little hungover, or doing just fine!! Stopped in Bellingham for a quick bite on the drive to Vancover. Didn't really want to do fast food, so this was a nice compromise as the food was easy to select, they cook it right away, and it comes out fairly fast. There are only 2 things on the menu and my friend was a vegetarian. So I got the meat dumplings, and he got the potato dumplings. It was super filling overall, and I couldn't finish my box of dumplings. Fun, but don't go if you're craving vegetables. read more

This has been one of our stops every time we've come to Bellingham. After last night, we will never be back. I have never been treated the way we were last night by an employee of a restaurant. She called herself the manager, although I highly doubt that's the case. If she is the manager, she needs some training. My friends and I were finishing up our meal about the time the restaurant was closing. As we were sitting there, she came running up yelling at us to get the F#@! out, and she flipped us off. We were caught completely off guard. In fact, at first, we didn't even realize she was an employee. I thought she was a crazy customer or something. Once we realized she actually did work there, we left. All she would have needed to do was ask us to leave politely, and that would have been the end of the story. I do understand that this restaurant is open late, and it's a college town, so I'm sure it can get tiring dealing with drunk college students. Amazing customer services. The best business model I've seen this year "2014" coming from a background of growing up in family restaurant business, managing, and working in the industry for 15 years. The place is simple 2 choices beef or potatoes. The highlight is the seasoning sprinkling on the dumpling. lt gives eater a taste of of buttery- rich, spicy, and a savory. The dough needs more work because it's a bit too thick and the meat aren't enough. True dumpling should have a bit less of dough, more meat, and or bathe in a broth that infused with meat flavor into the dumpling dough. The best part is the garlic, sweet, spicy, fermented tofu alike korean hot sauce and the melted butter pour all over it. Very simple place to eat: dumplings. The dumplings tasty, but, as it appears to me, this location is for the drinking crowd. You know, the quick meal before retiring in the early morning. Well if you don't, watch the perpetual crowd fill this venue leading to the business closure. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but I am a fan of the simple venue. It's small corridor feel with plenty seating is pleasant. I guess I'm a fan of urban utilization ie maximizing space economically like alleys turned into bar or restaurant alleys and art galleries. Hats the feel I received entering this space. Lastly,at $7.00 for ~12-16 dumplings (I didn't count) I knocked off a star. I'll add the star on if the dumplings were hand made, but seeing them come out of a freezer bag is suspect. Although it was NOT stated anywhere that this was hand made, a $7 price point is too high. I'm sure you know the business better than I but at $7 local eateries come into play. But on, the customer service was impeccable, the venue is amazing, the music selection is awesome and thanks for diversifying Bellingham's mundane food selection. read more

Heck yeah! This place is awesome! Pretty basic place to eat...you want meat dumplings, or potato? Pro tip: Ask for mixed, and they will usually give you half and half! The dumplings are spicy, so be sure to tell them if you don't want any spices on it. The rye bread they serve with it is fantastic too! This place is quirky, but the dumplings are delicious! read more
