Easily one of the best feed store I've ever been to. Best In the Bay Area hands down. Lots of parking. They breed their own chicks in house which is a huge plus as you get it straight from the source. You see the walk through of the roosters and hens as well, literally the parents of your birds and they're all extremely healthy. The hens are also labeled and you're given a zoo-like biography of each breed which is amazing for those starting out + for kids to learn. They have all sorts of breeds, literally breeds I've never even heard of. The hatched chicks here are given mareks vaccination in house + sexed at birth for most breeds except silkies and a few others. I love how the staffs make themselves known but just let you wander and live in the moment without breathing down your back. The prices for feed and items are overall pretty good, items are labeled for the most part. Selection is huge. Many of the items are not priced with a label so they are just ignored and not bought as you can tell by the dust. One biggest drawback here that made it 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of pricing on some items and the chicks/pullets. Nobody has time to ask for pricing for each individual chick and the staffs don't have a list, they have to check manually for each on their register which is insane. Maybe the store management is too lazy to put the pricing? Maybe they priced chicks differently per customers? Who knows. Luckily the pullets has a pricing sheet and the staffs were amazing about it. Overall, I'd take your family here to buy farm item, feeds and learn about the breeds. If you have time to spare, you can ask about pricing for each or just buy elsewhere. read more

I love this business. They are so knowledgeable, we've always had success following their advice, and the birds we've bought from Peninsula Feed over the years have all been healthy and sweet. When the kids were small, we would visit just to walk around and see all of the chickens, pigeons, and turkeys. No pressure to buy, just warmth and kindness. I made the drive from San Jose to Peninsula Feed Store because I had heard they had a great selection and were knowledgeable about chicks. Unfortunately, my experience was the complete opposite. While an employee was boxing up the chicks I selected, one of them jumped out of his hand and hit the ground pretty hard. Instead of immediately setting it aside, he still tried to sell it to me like nothing happened. I had to ask to switch it out myself. I've raised chicks before and grew up on a ranch, so I know how delicate they are at just a few days old--this shouldn't have even been a conversation. Then came the price. My total was over $250 for just 5 chicks, with silkie chicks priced at around $50 EACH. At that price point, you'd expect exceptional care and customer service--not having to advocate for basic things like not taking home a chick that was just dropped. What pushed me to write this review was what happened after. Within a few days, one of the silkies I purchased died. I called the store to see if they could help or offer any kind of replacement given how soon it happened. Their response? I could come in and buy another one at full price. No concern, no accountability--just blame, implying I must not have cared for it properly. For context, I've raised chicks before and know how to care for them. On top of that, I've had completely different experiences elsewhere--Tractor Supply Company has replaced chicks for me in similar situations without issue, and their chicks are a fraction of the price. If you're looking for a feed store that actually stands behind their animals and treats customers right, I'd recommend Ganados Feed & Pet Supply or Gilroy Farmers Supply instead. I won't be returning. Overpriced chicks and poor customer service--definitely not worth it. read more

No one wants cdfa involved normally but they're the only ones who can rule out a disease outbreak. sixty six percent mortality within 48 hours. Go elsewhere for now. Edit, I got the managements attention. so, first, it was you guys who told us that the first chick we had needed vaseline on her anus as it might have a condition. Second, that is a cockatiel cage and that lamp is inches away. We are both ex phs workers who have had birds for decades. $50 for black silkie chick that turned out to be male after 3 months of care and cost to me. Manager says they'd EXCHANGE him for a new chick. I think comping me a new chick would have been the right thing to do. I don't believe they DNA test their chicks though they claim they do it on site-- they just cross their fingers, this way they can jack up their prices and in the event they get one wrong they offer to exchange and with the exchange they get an adult rooster that is worth more than the chick with no cost to them in raising it. This is a genius shyster business model and like the manager said to me, "i'm trying to run a business here," with a casual apology and then hung up. I had an experience with another chick from a different vendor that turned out to be a rooster, but it was a $7 chick and the business didn't claim to be using DNA testing methods to determine sex, so i didn't feel like there was any need for reimbursement. DNA testing is nearly 100% accurate and there is no excuse for getting it wrong except that the test was never done. So they claim to use an expensive process to determine sex, inflate the price of the chick, and make a killing on the sale. Don't trust that they actually vaccinate either. I'll never shop here again for ANYTHING based on principle. I'd just take my chances at a place that doesn't lie about their methods. read more

They have a cat rescue area, but it is by appointment only. They had a section with cat and dog treats/supplies, but by far the most fascinating were the many farm birds. They had chicks and full grown chickens, some for sale and others not. They have turkeys as well! The dogs were quite entertained! read more

I went here twice to try and adopt a cat. A man looked at me like I was crazy and just gave me a card to make an appointment and call a number that only rang once and went straight to voicemail. Since when did showing up in person become strange. Just wanted to talk to someone, maybe say hi to some cats, and make an appointment in person but got shoved away. Great selection, unfortunately the horse feed I went to get was covered in weevils. They were on the outer bag and I could see them coming out from inside the bag at the seams. I told the kid at the counter and he said, "yeah that happens." I then told him that "that's what I came for and I wouldn't feed that to my animals" I don't know why they had not pulled it off if they knew about it. I was pretty disappointed because it seemed they had a large selection, and finding a feed store that carries horse supplies is hard since I live just on the other side of the bridge. First of all the service here was excellent and it's a very well stocked feed store that I was surprised to see right off El Camino Real in San Mateo. In terms of selection and customer service I would normally give this place five stars. I was just checking out their baby chicks that all looked very well cared for! The part that took me back was when I was asking how much the chicks were and they told me approximately $16 a piece? I've never paid more than $4 or $5 per day old chick. So I'm not certain what the pricing was about and I even found myself thinking when I was driving back to San Francisco that maybe he was kidding but I had asked him twice if that was The Purge price and he confirmed it so that must be it. Anyway I would never pay that much for an individual day old chick, regardless of the level of care.But perhaps because they're fairly close to Palo Alto people who don't know any better pay those kind of prices.? I do want to emphasize though that the store looked well organized for the most part and the staff was very, very helpful! :-) so I would say five stars on the staff and the selection but just about four stars for the pricing. As long as you know that you're going to pay $15 to $16 per day old chick, going in - no issue. You'll get great service here and the livestock seems to be maintained very well. read more

Very knowledgeable, kids love going here to see everything. We were just browsing and came home w 3 super cute fluffy silkie bantam chicks! Called around the area and these kind of chickens are hard to find but peninsula had a nice variety. (Pls be female). We fell in love with love them and can't wait to see them grow up. All the staff was super helpful in getting what looks like enough bedding and food for their first year of life ;) can't wait to go back to get more goodies! Updating minus star a chick didn't make it, which tore all of our hearts there should be a exchange policy for 7 days or less. I ended up buying two more which one is not as perky as the other. Popped in to get some mite treatment for our chickens (womp womp). Bill was super knowledgable and happy to help me navigate the many questions I have about chicken care. Most of the bigger feed stores are out by the coast, so this is a great find for "homesteaders" on the Peninsula. The store is not huge, but they have a solid selection of what you need to care for chickens, ducks, horses, and even some supplies for "normal" pets (hamsters, rabbits, etc). This is one of the few spots in the area with a wide selection of livestock grasses (hay/straw/etc), sold by either the flake or bale. They also have a good bulk section (ex. layer crumbles, DE, scratch, etc), which I haven't seen elsewhere. If you're in the market for a new flock, they have a selection of ducklings, pigeons, baby chicks, and adult chickens, including interesting specialty breeds. I have been buying most of my chicken supplies online till now, but the invaluable face-to-face support here made the brick-and-mortar experience worth it. We will be back! read more

I was told that the owner has retired and they are in the process of only selling farm animal supplies for animals like chicken, horses, cows, ducks, turkey and ect. They also sell baby chicks in spring time and have a wealth of knowledge on caring for your animals. San Mateo Pet Supply will maintain the cat adoption center in the front as before though, but no more cat/dog food or supplies! One block away is Pet Food Express (and they sell holistic, and organic pet food). read more

This San Mateo Pet Supply is mammoth. :p Their dog food selections alone were endless and had their own dedicated area towards the back. I was told you can also purchase horse hay and other barn or farm needs. They even have baby chicks for adoption to start your very own urban chicken coup for fresh eggs. I came here after the event for the Silicon Valley Chicken De Coup Bicycle fun. In fact, come to think of it now, I entered for their raffle and won a bag of chicken food that I have not yet picked up. :p There are kittens and cats available for adoption here from the Whis-Purr Rescue non-profit organization. They even have a huge selection area dedicated just for the feline in mind. I'd say their pet beds area has got to be one of the largest selections I've seen in the area. Prices were also quite reasonable. There is adequate private parking towards the back and a few off street parking, right in front of their store. I live that we can buy all our feed from here. They carry a large variety of organic feed for chickens. We've been able to special order the 10lb bags of meal worms and crickets- organic. It's a little pricey at $289 or something similar a bag- but it's organic and we can buy multiple bags at a time. We also really enjoy their bulk supply section. We've bought our rabbit hutches from here which have been so much nice than the ones we can order online. The staff here is super friendly and we love seeing all the kittens! I am a little bummed they took away their rewards program, as that has really shaved off some money from our larger orders. read more

Their feed had lots of filler (milo) that our birds disliked. Also, didn't want to start weeds. Found this place. The two employees are very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. I come to buy stall pellets and hay for my bunnies. The previous store was rude and unhelpful (E.g. Being short when asking to locate products, ignoring the only customer in the store, and ignoring me when I was ready to be rung up). This store may have less selection but strikes the right balance between being helpful and leaving you alone to assess products. With the stall pellets, they always ask me to pull up my car and help load it in. Minus a star because I've seen urine and droppings (mice?) on the flakes of hay. I came here to buy pig feed for a mini pig I recently bought as a pet, since the landlord doesn't allow dogs. Anyways, I really like the display of roosters they have. Eduardo was the guy who answered all my questions, he was very helpful and was able to answer all my moms questions in Spanish, so I didnt have to translate for her. Raise your hand if you spent part of the day crying in your car in the parking lot of a pet supply store because kittens made cute mewpy sounds when you walked by. Just me? Well, whatever. So, yeah, there's teeny tiny kittens and if you come in during an emotional week of the month (ladies, you know what I mean) you may end up like me in the parking lot crying into the windows while watching the kittens play. Initially I'd just planned on stopping in to get some extra back-up cat food while waiting for some prescription food I'd ordered online to come in. It was going to be a quick stop, I was going to get some cheap food, then I was going to finish all my work errands, and then go home to watch Angela Bassett movies and clean my apartment, just like I do every Friday night. Only this Friday I spent what was probably close to two hours (until my phone battery died) taking video and pics of all the cats and kittens here and their cutie little squeaks and mewps that kept waking up the senior cats. I'd worry about the shop people asking me not to come back after how attached I got to the little mews, but they were so incredibly kind and helpful that I know I'll always be welcome back, no matter how creepy I am with the kittens. On a more useful note, they don't sell crappy filler pet food here. Just the good stuff, but for a pretty minimal price compared to everywhere else and even online. I got the cases I normally buy for $25 for $13, and they had my one cat's favorite cans available for straight up 50% off. And though this review is mostly about cats, it's for sure worth noting that they cater to pretty much every species of semi-domesticated/farm animal including dogs, birds, ferrets, hedgehogs, chickens, hamsters, guinea pigs, and so many more. In the end, I still ended up spending over $100 on cat food, but I left with 6 cases of food and two coupons (frequent shopper cards) for 7% off my next two purchases, which will be very, very soon. read more
