Nice store right on Main Street. Great go to for anything animal. Also has tack supplies and selection of cowboy hats and boots. Very friendly staff and helpful if you are looking for something specific they will help you. The building is a historical landmark as well. Great to see it still be used. read more

Unfortunately this place has resident pets that live in the store that are lacking proper care. The rabbits are kept in small wire hutches and cages without room to run or get exercise. When one of the rabbits moved a huge swarm of flies flew around her. There was also a sign that said the rabbit loved eating yogurt drops, which are absolutely horrible for rabbits as they are vegetarian and can cause GI upset. In addition their pellets contained seeds and dried fruit and other things that shouldnt actually be part of a rabbits diet. Also the rabbits bedding was wood shavings which is just rabbit 101 wood shavings are terrible because they cause severe respiratory issues. The guinea pigs cage was pretty sad and gross and also way too small. I went to get bird seed from the bulk section but all the bins had maggots in them so I left with nothing. If they can't provide proper humane care to their resident animals they definitely shouldn't be selling chicks. The owners should really do extensive research on proper animal husbandry and work on the fly/maggot issue. read more

I ordered a $50 bag of supplements for my horse from them, and they charged me a $75 delivery fee without telling me that there was one. While they were very nice on the phone initially, they became extremely rude and refused to refund, saying they have the right to charge what they like for delivery-- without telling me. A typical delivery fee to my barn is more like $10, from locations a similar distance away. Won't be using them again! read more

I can't believe I was actually the first to review this expansive country store a dozen years ago since I was probably the last person on earth qualified to evaluate the quality and inventory of a poultry and animal feed store. Still am but I will admit to being a world-class lookie-loo when it comes to perusing unique, one-of-a-kind emporiums full of stuff I would never think of buying. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to how their merchandise is organized which I have to admit is part of its appeal. I have loved feed and fuel for many years, but of recent, customer service has been horrible. In 3 occasions, we requested and paid for a specific bag of feed. On 3 occasions, they loaded the wrong bag of feed and insisted/argued that what they loaded is the "same" as what we asked for. (Purina versus generic). They were unapologetic and rude. Today, an older gentleman intervened and asked one of the guys helping in the back to get the correct feed. The guy helping argued "but it's all the way up there and we need to sell this stuff first" and left the older gentleman with a bad leg to climb to get it. We ended up helping him load the bag. This is ridiculous. I want to support local, but there are a few folks on staff who are making many folks avoid the store. Owners of the store, please, please bring customer service back to full glory. We want to support you! read more

As a chicken expert, this is where I recommend people get the chicks for several reasons. 1) Best Quality, 2) Unmatched livestock and poultry knowledge, 3) they prepare all first-time chicken keepers with the right products without selling unnecessary items. As a recipient of hearing about these birds in later months or years, those that listen to what they are told do very well, those that don't do poorly. While I offer advice, most people don't listen. Thankfully the birds are such high quality that they can withstand the occasionally misguided first-timers. Please follow their recommendation. They are providing the community at large (100-mile radius) with the DNA stock of chicks. As for supplies, they are tried and true tested. The hardware to support your flock and the softgoods for feeding and tending to care. read more

I love this place and buy lots of items for my dog here. The staff is always friendly and super helpful! They are genuinely happy to see you and seem to love working there. Ask LAURA for help if you go in there. She's awesome and will greet you with a smile every time, and she will remember your name and the name of your pet the next time you happen to walk in! Huge place for all your pet needs - horses, rabbits, cats, dogs, chickens, etc. etc. For backyard chicken aficionados, if you're looking to get your chicks early so that they will be laying by summer (fingers crossed), then this spot tends to get them earlier than other places. In fact, today we picked up three Plymoth Barres and two Rhode Island Red chicks. At $4.75 apiece, they cost more than what we're used to paying, which is around $3, but the advantage is you get them earlier. Time is money, as they say. You can buy lots of feed by bulk here and the guy I spoke with was really informative about chickens. It's the spouse's hobby to keep backyard chickens (hey, the man doesn't drink, gamble or smoke -- I can let him have chickens) but lately they've been EATING their eggs. Gross, I know. He recommended oyster shell feed, a fake egg and filling an egg with tabasco sauce (I guess even chickens can get their tongues burned?!?). They sold all of the above, except the tabasco sauce, I got that! So we'll see... read more

When the South Bay was forecasting 100+ degree temperatures, we decided to beat the heat and headed to Half Moon Bay for the day. As we wandered through the shops of the town, we walked into Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel. Right in the front of us, it appeared. Among the smells of animal feed, sounds of baby chickens chirping, and the overall rustic feels of the store the coolest thing EVER appeared: a John Deere coffee mug. I know that it's not that big of a deal, but it's probably one of the kitchiest things to drink your coffee out of at work, and we knew that it would be perfect. So in a heartbeat, it became the new coffee mug for the office and I can only imagine the types of comments that may be heard. Great place to get the most random of things, and some of the most polite sales people that asked us "city folks" if we were interested in buying some chickens that day. Usually I like going to this store, and it's always my favorite part about HMB. I can honestly say however, that the first time I met the women at the register she was rude. First impressions are always tricky so I chose not to judge her, maybe she was having a bad day. BUT after a year or two of shopping there I have come to the conclusion that she is just that way. Today was the last straw, she was rude and short with me. Before I could say anything back to her she turned and walked away. Not only did this make me upset, but it doesn't make me want to return. The quality of the products are good but the customer service and how she talks to people are not. read more

Came here originally because we were planning our backyard farm. The centerpiece to said farm would be chickens from here. Come here to find out that if you want juvenile/adult chickens you need to come on the day they release. Not only that, but you should arrive AT LEAST an hour before they open. Well, that doesn't really work out well for me so we ended having to give up on this place for chickens. So if you are planning on getting chickens here, consider yourself informed. In terms of the supplies, that's where this place is great. Everything is available in large quantities. There's usually parking behind the building and you can just roll in and load up once you've paid for your stuff. Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel also carried diatomaceous earth. I was looking for it online and shipping was gonna kill me. HMB F&F had it and it was pretty cheap so that was kind of awesome. read more

This is an old school hardware/livestock/gardening supply store located right in the downtown part of half moon bay. Kind of a one stop shop for both professional and household agrarian hobbyists. Parking is street only, which in this part of half moon bay means that you may have to park around the corner (or on a side street) instead of right in front. No biggie really. While they do have a somewhat limited selection of gardening and farming specific hardware stuff the stock (ha!) in trade here is on all things related to keeping animals. They have a fair bit of saddlery for equestrian stuff and good selection of feed for same. If you where ever wanting to keep chickens, turtles (well, terrapins actually) rabbits and suchlike this place is your best friend. They have every single thing you will ever need to keep animals alive, healthy and productive. I mean everything-building materiel for coops, ready made coops/hutches should you not be inclined to build your own, feed, lamps, bedding and staff you can give expert instruction on how to maintain a flock/nest. Also they will carry the animals themselves-you can get a ready made flock on site should you so chose. Also have just about everything you'll need to start/keep/maintain a small pond decorative or otherwise, including expert advice and guidance. If you are just passing by, and aren't terribly interested keeping livestock they do have a small collection of gift able items near the front, but that's sort of an add on, and not really what this place is about. A perfect spot for anyone who wishes to keep productive animals either in an urban or rural setting. read more

You simply must stop in, if only to check out their baby livestock for sale. Bunnies, ducklings and chicks are so entertaining. You can also get western wear, feed, salt licks or dog treats as well as medicine for your goats. Parking along side to pick up alfalfa etc. Just don't park in Carl's spot near the livestock gates and feed troughs! In spring I buy onion sets for my garden or seeds. read more

Second, sooo much cuteness... except for the one baby chick that had crusty poop all over it's back. I've got enough pets with crusty poop problems to last me a lifetime. But I did love coming here. I think this is the first legit farm & feed I've ever been in, and while I have no business being here as I have no farm, no garden, no barn, no nothing that the average customer who shops here has, I do love me some baby animals, so I came to ogle the hatchlings, the bunnies, the kittens, the guinea pigs, and whatever other cuteness that lives here and I haven't yet found. I love to support local businesses, but not if the people working at said business treat their customers like they're an annoyance. This is a wonderful store to bring animal lovers of all ages, because they sell fish, rabbits, guinea pigs, chicks and ducklings. If you need supplies for pets, they have a huge selection. However, in my many visits here, I have encountered indifference or downright rudeness from the staff. There's never a friendly, "Hi," or even a smile. At my last visit, the cashier was chatting on the phone with a friend about his upcoming birthday. As he rang up my purchases, he couldn't even bother to take his mouth away from the phone long enough to greet me or say thank you. Thank you! Have a nice day! I went here to buy some baby chicks on the advice of a website about raising backyard chickens. I was very disappointed with the lack of knowledge about the different varieties. They get these mail ordered bulk from a hatchery out of state .. like from Missouri. Why not from CA?? When it came time for someone to help me "select" my chicks, I told the gentleman which varieties I wanted and he proceeded to grab the first chick he could for each -- one of which had a severe case of pasty butt which I had no idea about until we got home. Each chick was grabbed and put into the box immediately so there was no way for me to check them before being rung up. Lucky for this chick I have some experience and can manage the condition. Others may not have been so lucky and the chick would have died without having its bottom cleaned regularly until the pasty butt cleared up. If you go to buy your chicks here make sure to ask that you have a look at them before they go into the box. read more

I go here out of necessity. I need the animal bedding, I need the poultry feed. If there was another place to go to that wasn't a major hassle I'd do it in a heart beat. The owner Carl Hoffman is an Asshat. He is the most unpleasant man I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Avoid him at all costs if you can. Not only is he discourteous, he talks down to his customers, tells them they are wrong even when thy are right and dismisses them with a thought you might apply to a housefly. I know of a bunch of people who have livestock and poultry that absolutely grimace in anticipation of having to buy supplies. Get rid of Carl Hoffman and you might have an OK store on your hands. read more

So the chicken mission continues. After having only 1 chicken, I found it necessary to have a few more. After calling around a few places, I hear about this place that supposedly gets a shipment of chicks weekly. When we arrived to the location on Main St., we were directed to the back where they had about 9 cages full of colorful chicks. Black, yellow, spotted, brown, all so very cute. Then they had the reject cage with all of the 1-2 week old roosters. Poor guys... you were sexed wrong at a few days old, and now make up the 10 percent of sneaky boys that get into the mix. We pick a good variety of each color, making sure we select ones with flat combs, in hopes of not taking home another rooster. 14 chicks we collect. 4 for ourselves, 6 for my father in law, and 4 others for my godson. We also pick up a spotlight and several pounds of chick scratch. ......One year later, we have 6 hens (county limit) fresh eggs, excellent weed control, animals for the kids to chase around in the backyard, and the greatest reactions when people realize that we have chickens. Fun.... but definitely a different kind of fun. NOTE TO PARENTS: Chickens really don't make that great of pets for kids. If you can find a breed that is not very fearful of humans, or more lap friendly, then I would certainly suggest it. Yes.. they're all so darn cute but they are also a lot of work, especially for the first 6 weeks or so... and of course they're not as cute once they grow their feathers in. Make sure, you have the entire family on board before making the decision to take in chickens, otherwise you may have chicks one month, chickens another, then soon enough a meal on your dinner table. read more

My wife and I have been planning to raise a small flock of backyard chickens for fun and egg production. We built a lovely chicken coop suitable for up to eight or so birds from plans we bought on the web. Finally it came time to get our little chickies. And after much research, we decided to buy locally. We've been in Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel over the years just noodling around, and always enjoy the bunnies, the chickens and all the country atmosphere. So we took the plunge yesterday and went for it. The Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel staff were SUPER helpful and patient, and when it came time to choose the four little ladies we decided on, they were polite and not at all condescending on us city folk. They gave us lots of advice, and did so with great patience. Our little chicks are now 24 hours into their life with us, and we all couldn't be happier! read more

Came here on a lark when we were visiting HMB. Decided to pick up some chick feed and some live mealworms for our pullets. It definitely has the ambiance of a old-timey feed store. Although there seems to be more swag than you would expect from a feed store -- probably because they are in the middle of a tourist district. Ok, I can deal with that. However, when looking at the chicks and quail in the back, we were appalled. A lot them appeared languid. One albino quail looked super sick. One chick look pretty near death. The cages weren't clean. Prices for feed were about a little more than what we pay at our normal place. That's probably adjusted for the cost of living/business in HMB. Can't attest to the friendliness of the staff, but no one said hello or offered to help when we came in or when we were looking at the poultry. We left, didn't buy anything. Don't live in the area, so we wouldn't be regular customers anyway. read more
