They even have stuff for pets like chickens! How quaint. They have a vast inventory here (they do carry Hill's Science Diet which I'm not really a fan of) and prices seem reasonable. read more

This is a cool local petstore. I was visiting a friend who took me here cause we were going to go hiking and I wanted to get some Frontline first for my lil girl. (I'd heard ticks in the hills might carry lyme disease.) Anyway, they have a neat store, complete with raw foods, toys, tents for your pets, and horse supplies! LoL The Frontline (which they keep behind the counter) was less $$ than my vet offered it for and they sell it in 3 month supply instead of 6, which made it more affordable too. It was still almost 2x what I can get it for online but, hey... we needed it today! read more

Friendly staff. Similar to Customer Y's review in Sept 2021, my chicken at 6 months of age died of Marek's disease, as confirmed by UC Davis' CAHFS; I sent mine there for a pathology report. I had another chicken die at 4 months, with very similar symptoms, but not confirmed by Davis to be Marek's. I only bought 5 chickens, all of different breeds, so this is quite surprising to see a 20-40% infection rate, despite supposedly all being vaccinated. I just hope the other chickens make it. Although Peninsula Feed Store indeed have very friendly and helpful staff, they sell chickens infected with Marek's disease. We purchased a few flocks of fowls. Each bird cost $50. Marek is a complex virus that can stay dormant until the bird is 5-6 months old. Morbidity is commonly 10-50% but can be up to 100%. We were shocked to learn about this virus from our veterinarian. As birds got sick, we took each sick bird to the vet. When the bird passed away, our vet sent its body to UC Davis to determine the cause of death. In each case it was Marek's. Marek's Disease is as confusing as it is frightening and devastating. Our kids are crying each time we loose the bird. We have been dealing with this horrible situation for 3 months and at this point lost 10% of our flock. A very emotional and expensive mistake. It is unacceptable that Peninsula Feed Store is selling fowls infected with Merek's disease. read more

I am so impressed with the staff and selection at San Mateo Pet Supply. What they don't tell you is that you would be hard-pressed to find an animal that they don't serve in some way. "Pet supply" for these folks is a huge area, covering livestock-category animals like chickens, small animals like guinea pigs, and of course dogs and cats. The space is very large, way bigger than it looks from the outside, because there is an entire back room full of various foods. The front has a lot of toys and treats, supplies, and a cat adoption center where fortunate felines temporarily live until they find their forever homes. They host a huge wall of adoptable cats in these giant enclosures - two wire enclosures, and one big regular room with a bank of glass windows. It's hard for me to come in here and see the adoptable cats because I want to take them all home, and my cats (both rescue animals, themselves) would never speak to me again if I did! These adoptable cats stay in these enriching habitats that are, quite frankly, kind of more awesome than the environment that my own spoiled cats live in. And I'm feline-enrichment-obsessed! They put me to shame. We recently came in and bought some Belgian-made vegetarian hedgehog chew toys for our family Labrador, the kind that are ultimately edible after a long gnaw, (think: Greenies, only hedgie-shaped), and these are not super easy to find. But they are an old family tradition! A new family tradition I would like to start is based on a brand of their fancy schmancy cat treats that are made of wild boar. My cats would stampede for these! Livestock feed, seed feed, grooming, toys, food, snacks, lots of high-end and indie label items here. Workers and owners actually care about animals in general and our animals in particular. I sometimes park in front of the adjacent convenience store, truth be told. Oh, and they have a loyalty card. I really love this place. read more

I've been coming to PFS for 20 plus years, but particularly the last 8 years for my chicken supplies and most recently this year for baby chicks! We love this place, they have Scratch and Peck Feed, among other brands, any kind of treat you'd want for your babies and a great selection of chicks and sometimes full grown hens. Just be careful or you'll end up like us, every time we go in, we buy more babies. Our flock went from 4 hens to 27 in one summer. The staff is great, they help you find what you need, can load it and order if they're out. If you like cats, you can also take a stroll through the cat rescue upfront. We got a new puppy a few months ago and headed straight down to the local shop for supplies. I am a firm believer of supporting the ma and pop small stores. I too own my own business in Redwood City. When I got in, a gal (not sure of her name) looked up with a a gumpy face and said "can I help you" and my daughter and I said with excitement "we got a puppy and we need stuff". Her immediate reaction was to look at her coworker and said "well you are going to have to do this, I don't have time", with an attitude that I was putting them out. Then she asked me if I had the puppy yet, I said yes, she said what kind, i said Yellow Lab, she said pure bread?, I said yes, then she said loudly with anger "why the heck are people still breading dogs when there are so many animals up for adoption". Her attitude towards me (the customer who has just come in to give her my hard earned money) just got worse from there. I opened my mouth to ask her if she would prefer me to leave but thought the better of it. She was extremely rude. She didn't know that I had indeed rescued a dog last week and had a very bad experience and decided to go with a puppy. I am all for rescuing a dogs and will continue to donate to rescue societies, but that wasn't going to work for my family this time and I DO NOT need to defend or explain that to her. I was a very disappointing experience at this store. I have had many positive referrals to this store, but I tell ya, I was seconds away from leaving and going straight to Pet Smart. I have since solely gone to Pet Smart as everyone I have come into contact there is helpful, friendly and approachable. I will give this shop another try and really really hope my experience is better. Alright, I'm done. I've dealt with this store's ignorant and unfriendly staff because my dogs like a certain brand of food they carry, and because I wanted to patronize a business that wasn't a big chain. After today though, never again. The last four months, every time I walk in, the staff ignores me. When I've asked a question, the younger staff is pleasant enough, just completely ignorant of the products they sell. Young or old however, every time I buy the food my dogs like, the staff sighs and grimaces because the bar codes won't scan and the UPC numbers have to be typed in manually. I ask you - should a customer be made to feel sorry for buying a certain product? Today I went in expecting the usual brand of apathetic service and was treated to an all-out argument. Things started as usual. The woman behind the counter looked indifferently at me when I came in, and pointed languidly at the wall when I asked for a certain item. The items were too high to reach, and she didn't offer to help me as I struggled to get them down. Very annoying. The real trouble came though, when I went to make my purchase. They give these nearly-useless 10% off cards (you can't use food purchases to fill them up and you can't use them for a discount on food either) and having nearly filled one, I asked if I could split my transaction so I could use the discount on part of it. By the look on her face, you'd have thought I'd asked her to give me a kidney. Initially she said no but when I protested, she made damn sure I knew that giving me that 10% off was the biggest pain in the ass she'd ever had. She kept saying it "would never happen again," and as an illustration of how ridiculous the whole thing was, she told me that if I'd bought one item, left the store for five minutes, then CAME BACK and bought another item, THEN using the discount would be OK! However, wanting the transaction broken in two while standing right there, that was unacceptable. At home I was adding up my receipts and realized I've spent nearly $400 in this place. You know how that "helpful" employee told me "this won't ever happen again?" She's right, it won't. Not one more penny of mine will San Mateo Pet Supply ever see. read more

I can't stand the horrible customer service. Really, please acknowledge me. It takes a lot to get me to write a bad review and after reading these reviews it wouldn't matter if I told the owner, it appears she has poor customer service too. I was on my lunch break rushing in to get cat food. The KID waiting on the lady who obviously was in no hurry did not even look at me for at least 10 minutes. I know that I can be impatient so I waited nicely on purpose. After not even a hello I'll be right with you as they discussed all of her FREE samples...... i made my way out the door when the KID finally said, oh I am sorry did you need something! REALLY!!! This place has a really great selection of natural and alternative catfoods. You want food without cornmeal? They have it. You want high protein food, they have that, too. Lots of brands and a big selection of both canned and dry food. Other things this store has that I like...kitty strollers, cat harnesses, refills for your "Da Bird" toy, feeding syringes. I wish they were open later. Also, the counter service is usually nice but can be a bit slow and they sometimes seem a bit reluctant to give you a bag to put your stuff in. Still, as long as it's open when I need to go buy catfood, this is definitely the place I'll go. read more

I do enjoy the convenience of the self dog wash they have here which is only $10 and they provide towels etc. The big problem I have, like some of the other reviewers, is with the huge pit bull/pitt mixes (not the bulldog) that are just at arms length on the other side of the counter with only a waist high swinging door separating them from me and my lab. I know that not all pit's or other aggressive breads are dangerous but it's not my job as a customer to assume those aren't. It's very unnerving and scary to be in there walking around with your pet. I usually just go to the back, wash my dog, and get the hell out of there. The fact that a couple of teenagers are usually in charge of keeping them in that pin doesn't exactly scream safety either. I just think it's super inappropriate and why does one of them have micro cropped ears?!! I hope it was a rescue that was already like that because that is awfully cruel and difficult to even look at. Bottom line - If there was another place around here that had the same type of service, I would go there in a heartbeat and never step foot in this place again. read more

Prices are kind of high, but they have a good selection of pet supplies for dogs and cats. A good pet supply store if you want to go somewhere different than the chain stores like Petco or Petsmart. I enjoy coming here mostly to visit the cats up for adoption, and to pick up feline supplies. There's a bunch of kitties here, mostly kittens but there are some adults cats too. This is a good place to come check out if you are wanting to adopt a feline companion. They have a neat room for the cats to play that you can view through the outside window. It's fun to walk by to see the cats hanging out in there. Gotta say, the large dogs behind the counter make me nervous. It seems chaotic behind the counter how it's set up. Once a larger dog jumped up and barked at me menacing. I don't mean that the dog was going to attack me, but it was startling nonetheless. The worker was standing there but didn't seem to notice anything amiss. The workers we have encountered are never too friendly or smiley. They could use a makeover on courtesy skills. I wish they offered a pleasant greeting and a thank you for purchases. They seemed a bit more friendly to regulars though. I probably only would have given one star if not for the cats that are housed here. read more

We came here because our apartment complex hosted a yappy hour and we won a free bath for our dogs. My husband called and asked about the bath and they said to come on down, so we did. When we got there my husband went in to make sure we wouldn't have a problem using the voucher which we did not, so we brought our dogs in. Then all of the sudden they asked us if we had an appointment, which we said no to because they never said we needed one when my husband called. I was about to be very upset for making us believe we could just come on down and then not be able to do it because we didn't make an appointment. Luckily no one else had made an appt. so we were able to get in. The store is hard to maneuver through- especially when there is another customer with a shopping cart. We went to the back where the bath tubs were- I have to say we were a little disappointed, but we are used to taking our dogs to pet food express for their baths with really nice, clean and easy to use tubs. They have two bath tubs with ramps leading up to them- but my dogs were slipping and sliding on the ramps so just had to pick them up and put them in. They brought us the shampoo which was in an old spray bottle and watered down. Luckily we brought our own just in case. They gave us some towels and showed us how to use the blow dryer, which if you have small dogs will take forever to dry with due to the height of it, or you'd have to strain yourself to hold them underneath it the entire time. We were told that they were having a customer appreciation sale the next day and so I decided i would come back and get the discount. I was told by several different employees I would receive 25% off food but when I got there it was 10%. To be fair it says that on fliers but the employees should know! and if they tell you the wrong thing they should honor it but being how busy it was and how unfriendly the upper management is, i let it go. i've worked at pet stores, vet clinics, etc... and as someone who knows a lot about pet care, they have good products here but that staff wouldn't know why and wouldn't offer to tell you. i got my free bath and my discounted food, i'll be continuing to shop at pet food express. read more

Damn do I love places with tons of space for you to park your car. Not that Redwood City is as hard-up for parking spots as San Francisco, but I love it that San Mateo Pet Supply has their own parking lot PLUS parking in front and a good amount of street parking as well. Even though it's a big blue building, this place can be a little easy to miss cause it veers slightly off El Camino (it's close to the 7-11 and that shopping center on Whipple with the TMobile and Starbucks). I didn't even know about them until I was at Shore Dogs Park one day and was talking to this woman about "dog chains" (my neighbor seriously needed one - the kind you string up to let your dog run all over on a chain but not get tangled up). She was a professional dog walker and said said "San Mateo Pet Feed. They'll have it." Like I'm the last person to hear about this place (btw I've heard it referred to with several different names, like San Mateo Pet Feed, San Mateo Pet Feed and Supply, San Mateo Pet Supply...). The staff is quite helpful and they have all kinds of stuff here, including hay and straw for livestock (just walk to the very back). One day I needed some straw to mulch my tomato plants and got it here for just 99 cents a bag (the price went up a little due to inflation but really it's still super cheap). They've got a cool "serve yourself" area for all kinds of pet kibble (like rabbit food, bird seed, etc) that reminds me of Rainbow Grocery. And of course, they have plenty of pet toys. I got lots of toys for my kitties from this place, including a great little blue rubber thingymabob you use to pet, comb, massage and "de-shed" your cat at the same time. And if you're looking for a kitty to call your own, they often have a few cute kittens (the rescued type that are fostered, NOT the type that are "bred!!!") in the display cage to the right of the cashier. They also have cat adoption fairs twice a month through the homeless cat network(http://www.homelesscatnetwork.org). The most fun thing about this place is getting to see the bright-eyed, tail wagging, just-shampooed-and-blow-dried doggies coming out from the "dog wash" area in the back. I really want to like this place. I used to come here frequently to buy my dogs food because SMPS was one of the closest places that carried it (Eagle Pack). I also liked their wide selection of leashes/collars/toys, etc. However, the last few times I have left with a bad taste in my mouth. Unfriendly cashiers (every time I went I saw someone new, still unfriendly!) I think once out of the many times I've shopped here I was greeted with a smile. As others have said, in this day and age, with so much competition in the pet supply industry, customer-service can make or break a business. I am sorry to say I won't be returning. read more

They have all the stuff you need for chickens (food, scratch, hay, laying boxes, cages) but the service stinks -- slowwwwww, can't find someone to help you, they treat you like you did something wrong or are stupid, bins never refilled, etc. Since the only other option is going all the way to HMB we deal. A great alternative to pet food megamarts. They helped me carry my dog's 40lbs of kibble to the car, and it's small enough that you can actually find things. Good selection of food and treats, and I think that the toys are actually fairly priced. One thing--last time i was there they were selling non-alcoholic beer for dogs. Now that's just not right. If I'm gonna let my dog drink, I'm giving her something good--not poochy o'douls. Fortunately for both of us, I champion doggie prohibition. read more

The truth is, I'm not extremely impressed with San Mateo Pet Supply. As far as I'm concerned, a pet store only needs to have a (somewhat) varied selection of food, toys, and litter for the cats. Anything else is optional. However, it is always nice to be able to walk into a pet store and find what you want without much hassle. Reduced prices are nice, and it is very important to walk out without sneezing due to allergies. Today was my first visit to SMPS, I found the food I wanted in short order, but they didn't have a very large bag for sale. The layout of the store is a bit disorganized, and the kennels with adopted cats are small and right near the cash register (so if you're particularly allergic to cats, it's hard to avoid them). The cat supplies weren't any more varied than what you'd find at any other pet store. In conclusion: stop by if it's convenient, but don't make a special trip. read more

The only reason I come here is for hard to find food and grain free treats. The service and attitude are terrible, especially from the owner. Sometimes the food has coupons stuck to it and it's always a big drama to use the coupon that the manufacturer supplied! They also refuse to order enough for everyone -- they are consistently selling out of the product, which should tell them they're not aligning order with demand! And this happens over and over, so no adjustments are being made for customers' buying patterns. However, it isn't true that you can't use the discount card on food, because I do all the time. Maybe they changed the policy. There is a pet supply place closer to me that said they could order the special food and I think I might try them. I always hold my breath walking in SMPS expecting something unpleasant. read more

This is where I go primarily for cat toys. They have alot of food for animals on a special diet and organic options, and they have a variety of cat litter as well. They have many organic or "natural" appliances & toys for cats that are made of materials safe for cats (as it should be). I usually always end up spending quite sime time playing and admiring the cats & kittens that they have on display for adoption. And everytime I see their cute little round eyes, and fluffy fur, I'm tempted to bring one home, but my fur-children, Jack and Sally would not be so enthused about that. In fact, Jack would become depressed and anti-social, and Sally would probably bully it or start knocking things off of tables! So, no more bueno on bringing home a new kitty from here... So, come here for a variety of cat or dog supplies. They are better than PetSmart for sure! read more
