Disappointed. Took both my vehicles in for emissions. Both times same Emissions guy pulled my car out, handed me the paperwork without saying a word. Surprise, 60 days later to get an OVERDUE bill from the State because I had failed. Shame on me for not looking at the paperwork but I would think the Pennell kid would have explained that my vehicle had failed and only have 60 days to fix the problem! But he didn't! Terrible customer service and unreliable auto repair. It takes them 3 days before they'll look at your car and then 3 additional days to fix your car. Their repairs failed within 30 days and they do not honor any warranty. If you bring your car back then they will get you to pay more money. They have been sued in court before. I do not recommend Pennells for auto repair. read more

I had an appointment with this place. Was unable to afford at the time of appointment so a call was placed and set up another day with them. When I showed up for the appointment the employees behind the counter were extremely rude and couldn't confirm that I had an appointment at all. I had to call the company that sent me there in the first place to find out that they said they'd never allow me there for any reason I guess based on the fact I had to reschedule. They didn't even have the courtesy to tell me this on the phone I had to drive there, waste gas, and be treated like crap by more then one employee. I suggest you find anywhere to go other then this place with these employees. Last I checked the customer is to be treated with respect. read more

I've been to Pennell's twice. Once I had some (reasonably priced) repair done on my '99 beetle, and they mentioned also finding a MAP sensor code that they couldn't track down even though they did at least an hour of online research (which they did not charge for). As it happens, that particular model year has some weird missing MAP sensor issue which isn't really well-documented. But the main point is no charge, even though they honestly spent time on it. Today I took my gf's 2004 Dodge Neon in and mentioned some codes that had popped up after it went into limp mode involving timing/cranshaft issues. Also there's a squealing when first accelerating or decelerating. I'd dismissed the codes as recommended to see if they recurred, and they haven't. Anyhow, I asked them to try a diagnostic drive and see if they could find anything popping up. Went for pizza and came back about an hour later. "Well, looks like you're good to go. You don't need an oil change yet, and we're not seeing anything. Take care." Also no charge. I really don't think you're going to find more honest people to deal with. read more

I have so far brought two cars to this place. Car #1 had a bad oil pressure sensor. I brought it in twice and both times I was told nothing was wrong with the car. Ended up learning a lot about oil pressure sensors myself and fixing it. Car #2 went in because it was overheating and I was told it had a bad radiator and it would cost them $500 to replace. I brought the car home, bought a radiator, and installed the radiator myself along with a radiator cap and a brand new upper hose and thermostat. The car continued to overheat. I brought it back in and I was told it was a cracked head gasket and for no amount of money would the shop fix it. I brought this car to a Toyota dealership, they ran a pressure test and discovered the head gasket was not bad at all, the water pump is leaking and the clutch fan is going bad. The cost of repairs and parts is $622. This is a lot less than the head gasket repair would of been that didn't need to be done. Moral of the story, you can bring your car where you want, but this shop is 0/2 with being able to fix cars for me and I won't bring another car back to them. read more

Have brought me and my girlfriends cars here since lived up here and have not had any problems with them at all. Very reasonable and never trys to screw ya. Just brought car in last week when front brakes were making noise. Replaced pads and something else I cant remember right now...was under $200. When leaving heard same noise that heard from back brakes...brought back in next day and they fixed problem and didnt charge me. Only problem they have is calling ya when ur car is ready..always had to call them and I drop car off at 8am and takes all day to get it....but Ill take that over someone screwing me any day......owner is great guy and always trying to save ya money...thats a keeper in my book! read more

I brought my daughters car in with check engine light on. The original diagnosis was the to transmission was bad, a $2500 repair. However they did additional research and out that a faulty distributor was causing the transmission codes. They repaired the car for $750. Their attention to detail saved me $1800. read more

First of all, this place is a rip off. I needed battery replacement service. When I called to set up the appointment (AAA referred me to them since they don't do battery replacement in Salem), I was told the price ($209) and that as a AAA member I would get $50 discount on the service. I thought, okay. $160 plus tax and fees I can live with. When the technician who performed the service printed the invoice, it was whooping $350!!! When I told him about $50 AAA discount that should have been included, he pretended like I didn't know what I was talking about. The woman I spoke to over the phone was on a lunch break so I didn't have anyone to back up the information I was given over the phone. Horrible! $350 for a new battery. Unheard of! I certainly won't be going there again especially since they didn't want to honor discount I was told about over the phone nor at least 10% discount they must give AAA customers. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLES HERE. About 2 months ago I got a part fixed on my car at Pennell's. When I got my car back the entire interior was filthy. Grease on my sun visors, door handles, steering wheel, and everywhere. Absolutely disgusting and unprofessional. I had to have it professionally detailed to get rid of the filth that these slackers left. $400 later I just now had to take it to Karn's in Groton to get the SAME part fixed. The guy said whoever fixed it before did a horrible job with the cheapest parts. Go to Karn's! Much cheaper and overall better business. Those guys care about what they do! read more

Was told by locals that this was the best place to bring a car in the area. Had the car towed there and was told my water pump had failed. Total cost would be $1000 or more due to 8 service hours needed to complete the job. I of course called several other local mechanics and even dealerships and was told the total book time on the water pump for my make and model was 4 hours.!! Already a $400 savings. Needless to say I got my car out of there and paid half the price at a dealership who fixes and sells the type of car I have. Shop around before you let these people fix your car. Guarantee you'll find yourself saving money. read more

Had an exhaust manifold leak that the local Ford dealer claimed to have fixed and Pennell's fixed it for me and fixed what the dealer ship had broken. I have had them service my truck ever since. I had a brake caliper lock up on me about 100 yards away from their shop and they were able to fix it for me without an appointment right away. One of their technicians made a error installing a snap ring causing me to loose a locker and they replaced it without question even though it had been a long time after the repair had been done. All that and they charge far less then the dealership. I recommend them to everyone. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Worst business I have ever dealt with!!!!!!!!!!! Took them 9 days to take a look at my car from the time it got there. My car went in with a hose leak and came out with a busted starter. The mechanic told me my car was "a piece of trash" because my bumper was damaged from a collision. The own Joe Pennell called me, and I can say I have never been spoken to so rudely in my life. He was laughing at me, talking over me, and when I tried talking to him, he dismissed me and ignored everything I said. Now that the starter is broken under their care, they are refusing to work on it. If you want your car to accumulate more problems and come out more damaged than when it went in, this is the place to go. read more

Bought a 2003 Ford Focus for my 16 year old daughter birthday. 112000 miles paid $3000. Oil change at 3000 miles. Needed 4 new tires. Bought them $500. ...50 miles later number one cylinder ..no compression. For those of you like myself who doesn't know a lot about cars... That means up to $2500 to fix. Called Joe . Answer....did you have a warranty??? Of course not!! So I'm screwed Joe??? Yeah.. Sorry ..it happens sometimes was his answer. Used to bring all (3) cars for repairs until we found a different shop. Having the same repair done one on particular car currently, and found out when they got in there, that on the original repair that Pennell's did, many things were jury-rigged and put back together in the wrong way. A screw was put through a bunch of wires, a flap-door system was glued shut, and half of the screws to re-assemble this particular part were left out, seemingly due to the fact that they were too difficult to reach. read more

I made the appointment with Joe, the owner, who was able to schedule me quickly to make the repairs and maintenance I needed. Grace called me promptly with the cost quote prior to them doing any work. Then when I went to pick up my car it was less than they had told me because Mike finished the job faster than expected and they gave me that labor savings! My car drives like its brand new again and I couldn't be more pleased. They are honest, efficient and great at what they do. read more

We are relatively new to the area and were looking for a garage to maintain our car as the dealership had closed down. Pennell's is approved by the AAA, which evidently involves quite a process including certifications and even calls to customers. Anyway, didn't need much done this time except for emissions testing and oil change and general checkup. Pennell's is busy, but kept my appointment on time. Very friendly people. It was evident from the customers coming in that they get referrals from local auto body specialists. I felt it was reasonably priced. We will certainly use them again. read more

Had to bring my truck to Pennell's auto body in uncasville ct because the air conditioning unit did not work. Well I dropped the truck off. They contacted me to let me know that the air conditioner was fixed. I went to pick it up to find out it costs $400.00. Now I don't drive the truck often due to gas prices. I went to use my truck a little after that and noticed that it was not workin again. I called, they said to drop it off again and they would look at it. Again they called and said it was fixed. I was amazed to find that the work would cost me another $350.00 more. I picked up the truck and checked to see if it worked. It did, but not very well so I thought it had to run for a while. I got home and that was it so I thought. I used the truck once again last week only to notice that it was not working again. I was furious. I called and complained and once again I had to drop it off only this I stated that I should not have to pay because they said it was fine two other times. Needless to say they called and said that another part needs to be repaired and again I said why should I be responsible for repairs. They just kept saying all along that it's an old truck. Bull shit. So now they want another $700.00 to fix it this time. I told them to shove it. Now I'm out $750.00 + dollars and I have no air conditioning, not to mention I have to drive to Georgia with no air conditioning in a few weeks. Pennel's auto body shop in uncasville, ct treats their customers like shit and they don't stand behind their work. Poor business practice.
