I step into the restaurant & have to wait for 20 minutes just to get sat. Then, FINALLY we get sat in the very back corner of the restaurant. We read the menu & choose what we want to drink in about 10 minutes. Now we wait for our server who never came, 20 min passed, then 30, then 40, and our server never came. we asked other servers walking around if we could get a water & no one paid attention to us and just said "one moment" any time we would ask for our server. The Greek salad was very good. Thick slices of soft fresh feta, plenty of pitted Greek olives, anchovies and fresh veggies were included. Delicious dressing was presented on the side. As others have said, Penny's is a bit of a Norwalk staple, been around forever. I remember coming on and off in the 90's and early 2000's. Recently started coming back, a few times in the past couple of months. Today was the first time for breakfast and have to say I was really let down. Food was below average, service was fair, although found it very strange coffee and water wasn't refilled at the table. Lox looked horrible, and after waiter confirmed multiple times they were good. Good food, great service, amazingly reasonable prices. We stopped here after getting slightly lost and missing the entrance to 95. So glad we did! Service was friendly and prompt, with just the right attentiveness. The coffee, which I really needed at that point, was excellent--always my primary criterion in a diner. My husband had pancakes with bananas--lots of tasty chunks in tasty fluffy rounds. I had the Tuscany vegetarian sandwich, which was amazing with eggplant, pesto, and red pepper. Decor was typical diner, with tasteful holiday decorations. Everything was clean and bright. There was some background music, but the volume was soft. All of this, including tea, for only $27--almost prepandemic prices. Today I checked prices online at another diner we considered and calculated that Penny's scrumptious meal cost $11 less than this competitor. I'm honestly surprised how many people have a negative opinion on this place. I went here for Sunday brunch today and it was amazing! I had the Irish Benedict and my girlfriend had the Blackstone Benedict. Both were a perfect blend of savory and spicy. Only comment I might add is that the amount of hollandaise make the dish a bit too heavy. I had coffee and my girlfriend had a mimosas; both made well. My waitress was cool, she was funny while also staying professional. I love the old diner atmosphere, if you wanted to eat in a place that has that old timey classic diner vibe. Penny's is what it is. It may not have the greatest food in the world, but service is always good and if you come in to enjoy time with your family then you are going to have a good time. I have been here numerous times. The hours are good, they are open late and it is usually not too busy. It is a good place to have a relaxing meal. Some things I do not recommend you get are basically any sandwich on the menu, or any type of salad. Usually the salads are pretty watery and sandwiches have just never been their best. Things that are great there would include their Belgian waffle sundae, fish and chips, and open faced turkey. They have a very large menu so there are a lot of options for everyone. They also have a full bar and free wifi which I did not know about until recently. read more

You know, I have been to Penny's Diner more times than I can remember, it's a Norwalk staple. It's been around for decades. That doesn't mean it shouldn't strive to improve. I have found diners to be tacky, soulless adventures in food. Each is adorned with excessive amounts of mirrors, shiny booths, and misplaced justification to keep 1970's decorations. Now, this is some people's thing, and I don't fault them for that, I just associate this experience with a (very) late night adventure because nothing else is open. I've been to Penny's, Orem's, Post Road, and other diners nearby, and Post Road always comes out on top (try their milkshakes). But, I am here to talk about Penny's diner. My issue with Penny's goes back decades, to when I was in high school and came here after some event, dropped off my parents. Diners appeal to young people because they are inexpensive and can seat the whole crew easily. This makes high school kids a blight on the establishment, and it seems that here at Penny's the service suffered because of the perception of a bunch of loud high school kids. Fast-forward to today. It's just a diner. The food is diner food, with nothing that I have tried as being extraordinary, but it serves its purpose. It's great to have businesses like these stay around, and keep serving our great city. But, my criticism is heavily weighed in the quality of food, and my last visit, about a year ago fit with my perception of Penny's. read more

Only when I travel do I leave reviews and most of those are good ones), but this meal was disappointing enough to deserve a few words. First, though, the fries and fried cheese sticks we had were good, the service was acceptable. The burger was absolutely tasteless, the mushrooms were canned and the bacon was either not real bacon or it was really old. It had absolutely lost all flavor ... bacon!!! It hurts me to do this because my family and I have gone here after church, sports games, and after bars with friends. It's an easy place to go to but today is the deciding day for me. I called for a pick up and they said 10 minutes. It took 25..... for two wraps. Deli wraps. The wraps didn't have the advertised ingredients in it. When it came time to pay it was over $25 and we didn't even get French fries or sides. That's a lot of money for two deli wraps made incorrectly. It also took a few minutes to pay while I was the only one standing at the counter and the manager was wandering around (I'm sure he was actually busy but you have to tend to a paying customer). I come to Penny's all the time since I live 5 minutes away. I've noticed it is really a hit or miss with the service here. There are 3 great servers and 2 horrible ones from what I have experienced. The horrible servers seen to make excuses as to why they can't do certain things i.e. today i asked for chocolate chip pancakes with a sliced banana on top to which the horrible server responded "I can bring the banana on the side and you can slice it yourself", very unprofessional. Furthermore, I for one am very big on wording and how certain things are said. She was very rude on the way she made me aware that the banana would be an extra $1.60, most people realize that if they are ordering something extra...it will cost extra. Stating things in such a rude manner made myself and my party feel as if we were asking for free hand outs or being labeled as cheap-o's which we are neither. To conclude, sit in the back of the diner area or ballroom style area, servers that are assigned to these areas are great and will show you great service! read more

I went here about a week ago to have dinner with my mother. We ate here before in 2015 and the food was alright back then. I was shocked at how much things changed though. The service was decent, the waiters seemed nice but the food was horrible. I ordered pasta and meatballs and my mother did as well. The pasta was plain and incredibly dry with nothing but sauce on top. The meatballs were cold on the outside and piping hot in the inside ( usually indicates they've been microwaved..) While i was eating a meatball, it felt rubbery and it was unedible. A piece of the meatball was undercooked and hard. The salad was soggy and the dressing was watery. The place looked dirty and I could overhear other costumers complaining about their food as well. Overall, the service is okay, i would even describe it as good but the food is disgusting and overpriced. After ending up here so many times over the years, I find it hard to judge a diner by their wings. Plainly put, not very good, but I tried my luck anyway. I'll highlight some of the tastier options. From past experiences, I know that Penny's has some fabulous breakfasts, decent desserts, and tasty appetizers (anything fried is a good bet, really).
