Not a very good experience. Stopped in on our way through Hearne. They were out of almost everything because "it was the end of the month." I don't know why they wouldn't keep stocked but they didn't have Coke, Dr.Pepper, chicken fried steak and a number of their other menu items. 2 of 3 of our orders were wrong. So bad, skip it. We we're passing through like most people and I definitely won't be back. Hope you like microwave insta-grits! It took over an hour to get my classic breakfast and I was sitting at the bar starving. They were understaffed and under trained, multi tasking was not something they could do. I actually saw the cook walking around with a plastic container of green things (green beans?) and not looking too happy about it, she popped it in the microwave, then used her hands to pull some of it out and throw it away. My fiancé and I just moved here. We love the old diners. There aren't many around anymore. So we had to stop here for lunch. There was only one server and it was mostly filled. She was awesome and very attentive. The food took a little longer, but I appreciate the preparation time and service. The food was great and so was the service. We arrived at 10 pm all booths were dirty and the one waitress was taking an order. We waited for her to finish, she turned in the order then walked back to the booth by us, rolled her eyes at us picked up the dirty dishes did not knowledge us or wipe down table and walked off. I'm in Texas on a business trip and I have been driving past this place every day this last week. I haven't really seen a whole lot of traffic here but figured that's common in a small town with several fast food choices. So I decided to go in check it out this evening. I stepped in and the cook and waitress were sitting at the other end of the place just hanging out. She said she was tired which is understandable if you work in the restaurant business. So she told me to seat myself and I started to look at the menu. I had decided prior that I really just wanted a small bowl of soup but I was informed that they didn't have any (even though it was on the menu). So the waitress recommended a salad because she said they were good. I ordered the grilled chicken salad that was supposed to include lettuce, tomato, carrots, cheese, red cabbage and a few other fresh ingredients. When I got the salad it was lettuce, tomato, cheese, diced onions, pickled jalapeños, peppers and canned mushrooms. Ok I have to say that the chicken was cooked nicely but that was not the salad that I ordered. I'm assuming that they ran out of ingredients...? If that was true then why didn't they just tell me like they did about the soup. The cook and the waitress looked tired but they really displayed no actual interest in making a nice memorable experience. I asked the waitress why there wasn't anyone ever there and she said it was because some people like different cooks and waitresses. I hate to say it but if that's the case then they need to replace all of the others. It's sad to know that there are many in the restaurant business that really don't care about the patron. Good food, service and experience = higher profit. Bad food, service and experience = lost wages, debt, high turnover ratio and negative reviews on yelp. read more

Went there to eat, walked in, only the cook and 1 waiter. Several tables empty but full of dirty plates. We sat down, waiter helped couple that came in behind us. He said "Hi how are you?" Never came to take drink order or even told us he'd be right there nothing else. We waited over 10 minutes, he never walked over to us or anything. We got up and left. After no acknowledgement from either one we weren't staying. Waiter said "Have a nice day" I was like ok really I just said "yeah, thanks for helping us" read more

The food was very good, except my hash browns were burnt. Service was not that great due to being under staffed. For a place that is known for their Milkshakes they were very disappointing, they were not that great and were served in a styrofoam cups. Some of the waitresses left to go smoke when they were already under staffed. There was no chef the waitresses were also the chefs. read more

We have driven by this place for years. Each time we commented, "we ned to stop". I am a diner person. I have visited diners all over the US. I have eaten at a Penny's Diner in Yuma , AZ, and it was very good. So, when we picked up the menus I thought we were in for a treat. A treat does not describe what we got. This is one of the most disgusting places I have visited. The floor looked like it had not been mopped in weeks. The grill was dirty. The food was horrible. We were given napkins, which consisted of pieces of brown paper torn off a roll and handed to us--the tear was not a straight line--ripped off. The food came and it was not fit for the garbage pail! Guy F. visits Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives--this place would not even make the list as a dive. It is a filthy dive that looks good going by at 70 mph. BTW--they were "out of" the first items we ordered. The service was very poor. We asked for our check twice. We finally had to get up and go to the cash register. When we got there the waitress asked--can I help you? Yes, our check please. I was really looking forward to finding a new diner where I could dine on our trips through this area. Stopped by this diner a couple of times. First time they were out of bacon for a BLT sandwich, but the waitress was so friendly and nice so we stayed and ordered some burgers . The food was good, service excellent. The last time was a few days ago and it wasn't a pleasant experience at all! We went in about 8:00 pm, sat down. The waitress came over and asked what we wanted to drink. She was a young woman with quite an attitude, already. I said I would like an iced tea, before I finished my request , she interrupted me and said "we don't have tea today", again with an attitude. I looked across at my husband as he was giving his order and shook my head. She walked away and I told him I'd had enough! I said that I'd rather spend our money elsewhere! While traveling on 2/10/2015 my brother and I stopped here for breakfast. We sat ourselves, no one said hello. The waitress/cook came to the table next too us three times before she acknowledge us then still made us wait. Menu was not accurate in my opinion, as in Hash browns with vegetables and Cheese, does not mention what kind of vegetables. Upon receiving the food that the waitress had to cook while the other waitress piddled around, no cheese was on the Hash Browns, it was loaded with Jalapeno's and Mushrooms. The butter for the pancakes was not "Butter" but whipped spread and when we inquired about it they said it was all they had. We asked for the check, the waitress came back and gave us the total amount, we again asked for a written check and was advised we would get a receipt at the register. We advised that this was unacceptable as we wanted to know what we were being charged for. The Service here was horrible, as I am a Server as well, I know I would have been fired for this kind of service. read more

My family and I made our last visit to Penny's Diner in Hearne, Texas 07/02/15, we will never eat there again and will be telling all of our friends and family to not patronize this business. The cook yesterday was really rude and did not practice cleanliness and being sanitary behind the counter and grill. At 10:15pm a white female dressed in flip flops, booty shorts, t-shirt and her hair wet, proceeds to go behind the counter near the grill talking to the cook. She then went and put her purse down near a male who came in with her carrying a baby in a carrier. The cook then asked her to take a man's order who was at the counter. This lady never went to put on a Penny's shirt, some shoes, hair net or even a pair of pants before she started to take the man's order. After she took the order, she hung the ticket and reached over the grill with her visibly wet hair dangling over the grill. She then began to bus a table and took another order, reaching over the grill again to hang the ticket for the cook. The lady even picked her butt while behind the counter and never once washed her hands. The cook at one point took her gloves off to rub her forehead and wipe her nose and reached into the cooler to get some eggs out and put them on the counter. The cook came over to my family's table and my wife asked her "Why is she behind the counter and not in uniform, she doesn't have a hair net on either", the cook said that she is a waitress and none of our waitresses wear hair nets. But the cook herself was wearing a hair net around the grill. The cook began to make excuses, but then agreed with me when I told her "As a customer, this does not look professional and sanitary", she then said she didn't touch none of your food. She said to me "Do you want me to throw your food away and start over" in a condescending tone to me and my wife. At that point we left Penny's and that will be our last time ever eating there. There is no place in America, were a person can come off of the street in flip flops, booty shorts, t-shirt and wet hair...get behind a counter and open grill and this not be considered unprofessional and unsanitary! read more
