If you are stuck in the middle of Nebraska then by all means eat here instead of a chain. Just expect Midwestern diner food. I can't speak for their breakfast, we ate lunch here with a family of 5. Our waitress had a big hickey and acted like I was asking for way too much to have her add up the total on my bill (she gave it to me itemized). White bread, freezer French fries, etc etc. They had a large breakfast menu, and a lot of people at lunch were eating breakfast, so maybe that's their thing? If I could give Penny's a lower score I would. As we waited for our food, I was watching the cook and to my disgust he was handling ALL of the food he touched with his bare hands!!! NO food gloves any where in sight. He was making French toast and dipped the bread in a bowl of the egg mixture and when he pulled the bread out with his bare hand, the mixture was dripping from all five of his fingers!!!!! A good little diner. They serve basic diner food - breakfast, sandwich, burger, specials. The food was good, service was a bit slow but there were only two working in the whole place and one of them was the cook. The place is a little worn around the edges, but clean and neat enough. I had a bacon cheese burger with chips. The burger was not very big but tasty and had a bit of char on the meat. I thought $7.25 was a little high but it tasted good. Overall, I would eat there again but it was not anything exceptional. read more

What better place to stop than Penny's Diner? Think about it. You're on the highway and you haven't eaten that much and don't want to eat at a local chain place. All of a sudden, BAM!! Penny's Diner right off of I-80 open 24 hours. Or maybe you had to take a break from driving halfway across the country and thru the middle of the night crash at one of the nearby hotels. So you decide you'll get breakfast there in the morning as the 50's diner catches your attention right before you hit the sack. The service was excellent and the people were very friendly. The food couldn't have been better for the money. The 50's atmosphere as cliche as it sounds, really makes it more enjoyable. So what are you waiting for? This place is tiny inside but anywhere you sit is interactive with the cooking and a great seat. The food is made in sight and they have quite a few options. Such great diner food. We chose this diner based on the high Yelp ratings. I had the cheeseburger and fries...a diner staple. It was okay, just average. Better than most fast food burgers but not over-the-top delicious. Fries were good. My husband enjoyed the pancakes, but other than being quite large they were just pancakes. My daughter liked her omelette. It was large with a generous helping of hash browns. This place is really sparkling clean, and I really wanted to like it but I had a hard time. Generally I enjoy watching my food be made at a diner, but this place it just only did the food a disservice. I didn't realize the menu was going to be so limited, so of course everyone at the table ended up ordering a burger. The burger was okay, nothing to go out of your way to pass up a chain place when you are hungry for. I can say that because I made the two other people I was driving with wait to eat just so we could come here. This place really didn't live up to the 4 star in my book. The atmosphere was great in this place. Our waitress Rochelle was awesome. She had our food and coffee fast and always full. I think the only thing I didn't like about this place was the peanut butter in an already prepackaged thing, it tends to be hard and not easy to spread on pancakes. Denny's was up the street and I hate that place, so when we saw Penny's we were relieved. Food was great and came out pretty fast. Most of the staff there were friendly and joked around with us. I had the chicken fried steak skillet which I would order again and my partner had the breakfast burrito which he liked because it was meaty with hearty chunks of ham. Went here for breakfast this morning. I gave it 4 stars keeping in mind this is North Platte Nebraska. It is a stereotypical greasy spoon diner and a good one at that. Menu not huge but I got the impression most items on it are proven winners. Staff was friendly and service was good although it is not the cleanest place in the world. I had the biscuits and gravy with 2 eggs over easy and a side of bacon which was very good. My buddy ordered the country fried steak skillet which he said was also very good. Me and my dad were driving by and stopped to check it out, just as you walk in you can tell they never clean the front doors windows super dirty. The smell your hit by isn't one of hash browns and sizzling bacon it's a musty smell. I had to go to the restroom right off the bat and it smelt super bad in there, the mirror was smudged beyond recognition, the sink more then likely have never been clean with a large collection of dust and filth and the toilet looked like it hadn't been cleaned over three weeks or more. Time for the food... the coffee was cold and none of the workers wore gloves, I watched them touch all the food with there filthy hands. I saw the lady's coming in and out of smoke breaks without washing there hands, one of them just got there hands wet and then proceeded to touch the food, and the food was pretty mediocre.
