This coffee shop is connected to a restaurant, Novel in the Crossroads, it's right on the corner so you could miss it if you don't look for the address. The courtyard has a very earthy ambiance with wooden seating and couple of swings. The coffee shop has a very limited menu selection for coffee, teas, soda and juices. They have house made syrups of Honey or Vanilla and offer a mocha coffee drink. Oat milk is only other milk alternative. My honey & vanilla latte with light ice was prepared by Kyle. 12 ounces is the largest size for iced latte. My cup was not full. I don't know why coffee shops short people when you order a size, it should be that size and not adding ice to make the difference. It was good to try this place though. My drink was ok.

What a fun little walk-up coffee shop. A simplified but quality menu, some outdoor seating, and some tasty pastries bring this all together. This was a meeting spot on a chilly Friday morning, and I'd definitely recommend coming when it's 30 degrees warmer. As far as I know, it's outdoor only. I ordered a Columbian pour-over as I love quality coffee without any frills and boy did this deliver. The quality was top-tier, brewed perfectly, and a nice dosage of caffeine. The person I was with opted for one of their canelés, a French pastry that supposedly is very difficult to make. I tried a little piece of it and it was very good; buttery, rich, and flavorful. The outdoor seating area is nice as well, and there's parking right by the building. I may come back here with the kids sometime as they did something that few coffeeshops do: have a kids menu! Fun spot, glad to have tried it.

Went on a fun friend coffee date to check out one of the newest crossroads coffee additions! Penrose was the perfect spot to grab a yummy coffee and enjoy the weather with a friend! The baristas were very friendly and offered my pup a treat! The menu is limited but none the less, tasty! My friend enjoyed her Cafe Nico, which was a latte with flavors of orange and cinnamon and my vanilla americano was refreshing and delicious as well. They also had some yummy looking pastries! If you are looking to enjoy some time outside and a new coffee shop be sure to check out Penrose!

This is just the cutest little coffee stand! I went there and ordered a chai latte. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had nondairy milk options. I will also say that the prices are very reasonable. They have a large covered area for seating, but otherwise it is mainly just a stand. The people working there were very friendly.

This new coffee shop is so cute! It's small and has a simple menu, but the service was quick and it's adorable. It's right next to Novel, so easy to find. Seating wasn't an issue but when the weather changes I'm not sure how they'll handle that because thankfully I went on a perfect day but otherwise it's just outdoor seating.

What a delightful find! Penrose is a walk-up window just to the right of Novel's front entrance that is serving coffee and pastries. The coffee is sourced and roasted by Cielo Roasters; a small batch roaster that is also operated by Penrose's owner Kyle. He was present when I visited and was a gracious host that has been in the industry for a couple of decades. The pastries travel 20 to 30 feet from Novel's kitchen all the way to Penrose's display counter for love at first sight. I ordered the Japanese Milk Bread - bagel in appearance, but soft and sweet with a cream cheese-ish filling and dried tomatoes - exquisite! My beverage was from the seasonal menu; Malt - a 6oz cold offering of malted milk, espresso and simple syrup. Delicious and a delightfully reminisce of childhood beverages. I sat in their semi covered patio and greatly enjoyed the city scene and the Western Auto sign slightly to the south. A perfect little snapshot of the joys of living in Kansas City. It was a tough decision on which beverage to order, so I re-ordered and took the Cafe Nico to go with me. A hot drink with espresso, orange, vanilla, cinnamon and half and half. Equally wonderful. Return visit? That's a no-brainer - eager to do a pour-over and more pastries!

An amazing coffee spot!! I just walked up on it, those who know - know. Service is amazing and the set up is perfect. I had latte and coffee cake. This is nice spot for a morning coffee, and watching the traffic go by. ***Flight Attendant approved***

Penrose is an absolute delight! Nestled in a charming corner, the atmosphere is peaceful and inviting, with good outdoor, comfortable seating. I ordered an iced coffee and the pistachio pie bar. The coffee was solid and the pie bar was delicate and not too sweet. Excited to go back and try their other pastries and coffee drinks!

    Cutie lil coffee window!

This place reminds you of why you like KC. A KC hidden gem! Cute outdoor seating, the atmosphere and pastries make you feel like you're somewhere else. Great service, pastries, and cappuccinos!

The reason why I am not giving this place 5 stars is because of the lack of customer service. Both the cashier and barista were not very friendly. They were brisk. I tried to engage in a converation about their pastries and they seemed disinterested and just wanted to move on to taking orders and making drinks. They weren't even busy. I arrived an hour after they opend and the place was 10% full. The food was good. I got the avocado toast and with a littl more salt and hot sauce; it was delicious. The place also smelled amazing. I was engulfed in the aroma of cinnamon, sugar and butter and roasted coffee. I could not have been happier except for the lack of warmth and feeling of connection and a sense of community one often gets in an independent coffee shop. The hot latte I got was good. Oat-milk was $1.25 extra which I thought was a bit steep for Kansas City. But I guess prices/inflation affects us all. The ham and cheese croissant I got was super delicious. It was better than the avocado toast. I would get the croissant again. The rooftop area was a vibe. There were more people up there talking so it had better energy. I think on the first and second floor, most people were just working and on their laptops, so it was overall very quiet.

Eclectic decor in the older building with exposed brick walls and a fair amount of plants up front. It's a large space with a variety of seating options - maybe 4 or 5 two-tops along the windows in the front, a few large booths that could sit six each if you're cozy, 3 or 4 nooks with a mix of couches and stereotypical coffee shop seating, a larger table in the back, and some bar seating as well. The traditional coffeeshop style seating is a nice touch, and feels like a throwback to a different era, when coffee shops weren't just a ton of people on laptops. That being said, they're clearly trying to draw in remote workers and their ilk, with plentiful outlets (i.e. four outlets at the booth I sat at and I can see 4 under counter outlets for every 2 or 3 bar stools. They've also got signage at the tables encouraging sharing the larger spaces/inviting others to sit with you. Was probably a little quieter than normal since it was Memorial Day, so the sign to share the space didn't come in to play, but I appreciate the vibe and community they're trying to create. Decaf americano was fine, but it was in a paper cup which felt like a bit of a miss. They didn't ask if I wanted it for here or not, but I do see some mugs on top of the large Rancilio espresso machine (so the purists may balk it's not a La Marzocco).
