Love parking in the back and entering through the back door. Makes it so easy. Staff greets you and indicates they can help with anything you need. I usually just browse and get the refills I need but this time I took her up on her offer of help. She was great! I wanted to make my own Italian dressing without added salt and sugar and she pointed me to an Italian her mix and explained how she used it for dressing, it was so helpful. I grabbed a couple other options since there was a coupon. Great way to save money if you sign up for emails. Can't wait to try dressing with my new options. read more

I love Penzeys Spices and I love their politics, too. With the world we are currently living in, your politics determine where I spend my disposable income. The variety of dried spices is mind blowing. Plus, the assortment of jar sizes makes it easy to buy and try a new seasoning within your budget. I love this place! If you love to cook this is the perfect spice place. Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mediterranean, and more are all available. The only place I can find freeze dried or ground Shallots. Many different spice blends and a large variety of them available, salt free. The store is organized, clean and easy to navigate. The staff was helpful, and the day I went online received a few goodies for my shopping trip. Very cute spice/dried herb shop out in Maplewood! There are a bunch of different options of everything you can think of, from dried shallots to almond extract to Chinese, Vietnamese, and Indonesian cinnamon--who even knew there were that many types of cinnamon??! There's also a big jar with a metal lid for each type of spice so you can smell them before buying. They also have cute spice blends -- we got a little thing of "Justice" (combo of garlic, dried shallots, green peppercorn, chives) because it smelled so good! Excited to use! I ended up at Penzeys based on a recommendation from a friend. My quest was a Christmas gift for amazing neighbors who frequently share their grilled masterpieces with our family. A few things stick out for me as positive: -Myself and three young kids went in days before Christmas. Penzeys was kind and patient with our family. My oldest (14) asked for assistance picking out a spice, and they treated him with respect. -The price point was impressive! The layout of the store enhances your experience. Clearly labeled sections, bright lighting, uncluttered and plenty of space to peruse. Staff is friendly and greets you as you enter, but are not overbearing. I make a special trip to Penzey's for my spices because they are high quality and this is a phenomenal company that I want to support, so worth the extra trip! My favorite spice is their cinnamon! I think it is the best I have had. Their peppercorns and vanilla are also top notch. Penzey's also has several colorful box sets that are usually themed that make great gifts. I'm so happy to see Penzeys move back to their original location! This is one of my go to places for gifts. They have a wonderful selection of prepackaged spices. I especially enjoy the LOVE people set that comes in a variety of sizes and price points with a vibrant box that looks impressive to the eye. The spices are quality and are always well received. I also love stocking up on spices here, the staff is usually pretty helpful in answering questions, but can be very busy as is a large volume store. I've been using their oregano for at least 15-20 years and when I opened the jar it was full of seeds n sticks so I pulsed it in my ninja. looked much better however when I poured it back into the jar it was less than 2/3rds the large jar I bought!!! that coupled with the strong polital views in their newsletter lost them a really good customer!!!! read more

I shopped on their very user-friendly website, identified Maplewood as the store where I would pick up, and paid online. Shortly thereafter, I got a call from the Maplewood store to schedule my pick-up time. They bagged my order and left it in a crate outside their front door for me to pick up. I know people in this country are polarized over politics, but why would ANY business owner bring that into his/her shop? I'm a big foodie and probably would have spent big, but then I saw their "Justice" spice blend. The bottle said something about one party "stealing our democracy to give to their donors" and "sprinkle liberally." Do we not have enough animosity without this kind of nastiness??? I didn't spend a penny and I'll never go back. And for those of you who are part of the hate mongering crowd: had that bottle said "use conservatively," I would have walked out too. The people are usually pleasant and the space is always clean and well organized. Sign up for their emails and you get sent free offers several times a year. This is a great way to try new spices. Their cinnamon blend is among my favorite but I'm also a big fan of the herb mix made to put on frozen pizzas. Really gives the pizza a fresher more homemade taste. Penzey's gifts sets are great for showers, weddings or birthdays. Plenty of parking directly behind the store in the free lot. You can enter from the parking lot or from the street. The store is bright and well maintained. The area of Maplewood is an up and coming little St. Louis nook. Cooks and food enthusiasts will adore this great spice shop. read more

If you love to cook, you're going to love Penzey's. If you love to bake, you're REALLY going to love Penzey's. I can't count how many times I've been in to pick up something essential, whether it's vanilla, cinnamon, grill seasonings, or whatever else I need. If you have a sensitive nose, just be prepared that there are a lot of smells going on, but if you're anything like me you'll absolutely love it. They have over 250 spices, so you're guaranteed to see something you didn't know about before! If you're stopping by to get something specific, make sure you still browse a little bit. They have a ton of recipe cards you can take, and while I haven't made any of them yet, everything looks wonderful. They also have tons of open jars and samples for you to smell so you can get a better idea of what you're buying. Penzey's also has a ton of different gift sets which always come in handy for Christmas or hostess gifts. My only complaint is that the employees don't always seem that willing to help out. I've been in a few times where I had to wander around for a few minutes trying to find something while the employees talk amongst themselves by the registers. But overall I've had a pretty positive experience. And I can't wait to use all the steak rubs I just bought for the summer when it's time to grill on the patio again! read more

We have been buying from Penzey's since long before they opened bricks and mortar stores. It is nice to have the store in Maplewood. It makes it easy to look and sniff and select the size package that you want. It has been interesting to see their development into a fairly well travelled spice merchant. When we first found them as a mail-order place, their catalog was pretty limited and their understanding of spices was very unsophisticated. I recall a catalog in which they described a certain chile pepper as being in the same "family" as sweet bell peppers. This is the understatement of the year since they are simply different pod varieties of the same genus and species. As I said, they have greatly expanded their line. If you use very large quantities of, for example, Indian spices you are better off pricewise, to go to an Indian store such as Umbica or Seema. You will get good fresh spices at Penzey. They now offer smaller glass jars that allowed me to fit 76 spices into my spice drawer instead of half that many previously. We rarely buy the mixes and rubs that they offer, since we prefer to make our own, but some are pretty good. You just need to experiment. They do have a few pure ground chile types, but the offering is somewhat limited. If you really like to work with various chiles, try Pendary's on line. (Yes, I know the naming similarity is confusing.) They have a world class selection. read more

Once upon a time, I thought spices were all the same. This was early on in my life, of course. Now you'd never hear me uttering such a ridiculous and clearly inaccurate statement. Try telling a sommelier all wines are the same or a chocolatier that all chocolate is the same. You catch my drift. If you think cinnamon is cinnamon, for example, a visit to Penzeys will clear all that up. Do you get the Ceylon Softstick cinnamon, best for steeping, not stirring, hot drinks or as an addition to cream sauces; or the Ceylon "True" Cinnamon, complex and fragrant, with a citrus overtone and rich buff color? Or perhaps the China Cassia Cinnamon with a potent, sweet flavor, the Extra Fancy Vietnamese Cinnamon or the Korintje Cassia Cinnamon, with its sweet and mellow fragrance? There are a million different curry powders, extracts, chili powders, salad dressing seasonings and peppercorns. Just go in there. If only to smell your way around. I've been a Penzey's convert since I got a gift set as a wedding shower present 8 years ago. I've given gift sets from there for many a wedding and they've always been well received. I love the store, love smelling everything, my five year old really likes to smell all the spices, but it's a little bit tricky for little ones with so many breakable things. Their cinnamon is the best. I've been out for a while but I refuse to buy any at the regular store because I know it will not compare to Penzey's. This place will turn you off of supermarket spices. Remember to replace your ground spices yearly as they loose potency. The spice prices are pretty reasonable, everything is available in multiple sizes (including jars and bags) so you can buy as much or as little as you need. read more
