The parking lot is kinda confusing, but only bc the lanes/rows are wider than usual. Also, some people were coming for brunch since there's a Crepevine in the same parking lot as well as some other stores so I think people were just looking for a better spot. Once I went inside this particular shop, there was an array of sections that were all named with a title. They were cute little gift sets also along with a very well organized display of different types of baking goods, savory, sauces, spicy, rubs, and what not. I had no idea they were 20 million different types of cinnamon either! Lol of course I'm being facetious, but it was very enlightening to read. I knew of Mexican, cinnamon and Vietnamese cinnamon as well as whatever the regular organic cinnamon is I've seen at the various grocery stores, but I didn't know different places had their own types of cinnamon as well. The two women working behind the counter, were incredibly friendly and helpful and said if you were looking for a combo box that the gift sets were really nice. I went over there first just to see what the gift sets look like to get a better idea of their spices. I bought a couple of things as stocking stuffers for my friend that loves to bake as well as checked out the cinnamon's since I love baking in my classroom. A lot of the combo rubs had nut related spices and we're not allowed to have any nuts in our classroom so that's the only reason why I didn't buy any but they were a great combo and I could always get them from my house so I'll definitely be buying stuff online in case I don't make it up this far north. If you want to find hard to find spices locally, in a well spaced out store, this is really the only place nearby to do it locally. Went there for hard to find, which is ridiculous, ground white pepper and bought some other spices as well including something we've never tried before which is ground horseradish which will come in useful in the fall and winter for soups and stews. We get bulk items from Costco of what they have available and between the two can mix up our own spice rub combinations for prices much cheaper than the commercial salt laden alternatives. Recipes easily available on line for Cajun spice rub, (which I use in smoking salmon), Carribean rubs, Jerk rubs etc. Decent pricing, nice store, pleasant service. read more

Omg I have died & gone to spice Heaven! I have heard so many wonderful things about Penzeys since it first opened, which has been quite a few years, but never had the opportunity to stop in. Not that I didn't want to, mind you, but it was always because I would remember as I was driving passed & didn't have the time. This time I was going to a book signing event on the opposite side of the shopping center & I told myself when I was done I would walk over to Penzeys. Upon my departure as I was driving to exit the parking lot the light bulb came on & reminded me that I had to go to Penzeys. Not that I needed any spices but to check out the store. When you first walk in the door you are hit with the aromatic smell of spices. Oh and what a wonderful smell it is! I was immediately greeted with a "hello" and told that if I had any questions or needed any help that they (there were 2 people) would be more then happy to help. Talk about low key, low pressure sales - I loved it because I hate obnoxious & pushy sales people. So I just wandered through the store looking at everything and I do mean everything. And smelling all the wonderful spices. They have several different sizes of jars to choose from as well as some in varying bag sizes. They also sell empty spice size jars. They have gift baskets with different spices, themes, and spices from so many countries. You name it, they have it! I never knew there were so many different oregano's and other spices. And what I like is that the store is spread out, so you're not bumping into things or people. It's clean and organized. The 2 ladies that were working on this particular day were great, they weren't pushy or anything and when I asked a question they were very helpful. During my time in the store about 5 other customers came in and they were greeted just as I was and told if they needed anything to let them know. I walked out purchasing 5 bottles of spices and was given a small bottle of Pie Spice, a small package of Bicentennial Rub Seasoning and another of Pasta Sprinkle as a free gift when asked if this was my first time there. This store is conveniently located in Montgomery Village with plenty of parking available and tons of other stores around. If you're a professional chef, a home cook, self-proclaimed foodie or a total spice nut, this is the store for you! read more

Nice to be able to stop into a bricks and mortar establishment for a brand you hear about from a distance. The spices are high quality. KEEP THEM IN THE FREEZER for longevity. Penzeys spice is one of the few businesses I follow on Facebook. I appreciate that they are willing to put their political thoughts, which I agree with, online even if it might cost them sales. I've had good intentions to order something, or taken advantage of their frequent free offers, but somehow never got around to placing an order. While wandering home from Sonoma County I decided to take the road from Santa Rosa to Sonoma when I spotted their sign. I made a quick u-turn, park the car and walked into a clean well-organized store. The shelves are well arranged so it is possible to find the different spices. There are containers that are marked to open to whiff some of the spices. The people working in the store were helpful and very pleasant. S who did not want to go in with me fell in love with the store. The cupboards at home are filled with spices; we really did not need anything, however, there were so many interesting bottles on the shelves we found some things thing we had to buy: mustard powder, freeze-dried shallots, Spanish hot paprika, Hungarian paprika. The latest free offers were given at the cash register: French Thyme, Arizona Dreaming, and also season salt because if was sidewalk days at the mall. With all these new spices I guess I am going to have to cook more. After going to the store I read more about Penesky, it is a very interesting story. I will continue to support the smaller locally owned spice store. However, I will be back to this store whenever I am in the area or feeling like going for a ride. read more

Noticed bay leaves as I was heading out , have to go back for those , looked great . The spices are ok- not great. Expensive in comparison. Their cinnamon is really good. But, for the price, I can get cinnamon anywhere else. The staff is hit and miss on friendliness. The store is clean but very uninviting. It also seems like the store front is too large for the inventory. Sadly, you wont feel very welcomed here. I had a run in with the founder of Penzeys Spices. What a hateful man. Sad. Made me realize that good cinnamon is not worth the trouble here. I do not shop places that are not respectful of people. They always have special deals and NO ONE, NO ONE, has not been delighted with their gift box sets as gifts for people "with everything". I love Penzey's. They have an outstanding selection of fresh, reasonably priced spices and herbs. They run really great specials all the time, and they speak truth to power. So, yes-I support them for both their quality products and their political views. We were attending the local cheese fest and came all the way from Sacramento.I was referred to Penzeys spices from my mom and brother. My mom raved about the revolution spice and how she used it in meatloaf. I made the time to stop in before our event. I was pleasantly surprised how big and well organized the store was when I first walked in . We were greeted immediately and the lady directed to me to the revolution spice I asked for. She explained the layout of the store and kept checking in with us throughout our time in the store.she was very knowledgeable and knew exactly where any spice was in the store.At checkout I was given a free coffee cup, stickers and a hug coin! So far I have tried the fruita spice and white pepper and both were high quality and delicious. I can't wait to try the Vietnamese cinnamon. Penzey's has a huge selection of spices. I elected to try the Bavarian spice and the Greek spice. The Bavarian is recommended for pork, chicken, and other meats. The Greek is all purpose. I will be looking forward to buying more spices. read more

Today at opening time I was outside the store when the woman who opened the store arrived. I asked her "oh this is your store" she said curtly yes. I then asked her if she has any mango powder, she replied no, again curtly. I didn't feel like I was a welcomed customer. I came here and fell in love. The one thing I found that I cannot live without is the country dressing mix. All of their salad dressing mixes are amazing. I tend to make all mine from scratch, but after trying thiers, we may have a new house dressing staple. Prices are reasonable. If you get on the mailing list for the quarterly catalog, you get insane coupons inside. Yay! I cannot wait to go back. I spent about $40 here Saturday, and got an amazing selection of items. The bags are better priced than the glass jars, so if you have containers go for it. Also they have Aleppo Powder - which outside of Dean and Delucca in Napa, I've had a hard time finding. Which then had me singing other christmas tunes as we walked around the store. The store is overwhelming to sous chef like me. My wonderful girlfriend Naomi G. is the head chef in our condo. She was the one behind the wheel as we drove around the shelves of the store. I should actually say flew around because this place has spices from ALL OVER THE WORLD! Many that I've never heard of... They had samples you can waft (some that you maybe tempted to taste) of every offering. We grabbed a little of this, some of that. Got a copy of some of the recipes they were suggesting. Can't wait to try em. At the end of the world tour, I had learned a few things like we were on the magic school bus. I was so excited to see a Penzey's open within driving distance! Their selection is incomparable for the prices you pay. They have everything you would need for a starter kitchen and then all those odds and ends you cannot find at a supermarket. I got around 10 small jars of spices for $39.The only thing I would like to see is more recipes...they had a few scattered around using particular spices, but if they posted one for each type of spice, I would be more likely to buy the odd ones that I had no clue how to cook with. read more

A friend asked for funky spices for Christmas this year, so I hauled my butt down to Montgomery Village to check them out. This was my first time in the store. Wow. Just WOW. TONS of stuff... and yes, even funky stuff! Though, I was given by my boss some Chinese long pepper a number of years ago, and that by far trumps the funk of anything sold at Penzeys. Come here when you have a LOT of time to browse and sniff. I believe every spice/herb has a sniffing jar. Their gift boxes are really unique too. You can select one of theirs or you can package your own, and with that you pay an extra small price to get the garnish bag which comes with cardomom pods, a ton of bay leaves and quite a few cinnamon sticks. read more

I've come back to this place time and time again and realized I didn't update my review! My first visit I came in hand with a $100 gift certificate. My boyfriend knows how much I love the spices here, if I took a picture of my cabinets (Yes! I said cabinets, more than 1!) full of spices I'd be the poster child for this business. I loved walking around the store smelling all the spices I'd always overlooked the name online or the picture in their mailer. My favorite spices of late that are hard to find anywhere else, but are always in stock at Penzeys: freeze-dried garlic, freeze-dried chives, and chili con carne. Seriously, their chili con carne mix goes with everything in the Summer. Think chili and barbecue! I also top my potato salad with it! I also love Aleppo pepper. It's a sweet pepper that sort of reminds me of a non-spicy or smoky chipotle. Everyone in the staff is super helpful! They help you find anything, and recently told me when I was buying mustard powder (making your own mustard is awesome!) that if you don't see a 1 pound bag, grab 2 8-ounce bags and they'll give you the discounted 1 pound price! If you don't get their magazine, you best do so now! Every month it's packed with suggestion recipes and always includes an amazing gift or discount certificate. The last one I used? Any 1 cup spice jar free. And you know what? It wasn't just ANY, it was the most expensive! Yup, not realizing that I had a $14 1 cup jar of Maharaja curry (seriously, BEST sweet curry mix in the world!) in my basket I was thinking my tab came up pretty cheap. Then the lady winked and said "Good choice!" I saved $14 dollars just like that! Otherwise, just stop in and smell this or that. Surely some seasoning is to catch your eye, er, uh nose! I absolutely love cooking and experimenting with different cuisines. As a result, I have become a huge snob when it comes to quality ingredients. The spices at Penzeys are superior in quality. They are strong, fragrant and fresh. I cannot imagine buying spices at Safeway after finding this place. The thought of picking up a jar of McCormick spices and sprinkling them into my food literally makes me sob inside. I love many of their spices: smoked Spanish paprika, ground red chipotle, Parisien bonnes herbes, Turkish seasoning, BBQ, taco seasonings, Bavarian seasoning, etc, etc. Even just their simple seasonings like garlic power, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are a million times more pungent that grocery store brands. You definitely get better tasting food with Penzeys spices. In contrast to some of the other reviews, I find the staff helpful if you ask them for help. Sure they don't attack you on your first step into the store but if you go up and ask them for help they're super helpful. This is personally how I prefer customer service to be. read more

Prices are decent. And, the advantage this place has over the place downtown is definitely the parking. However, in my opinion, that's the only advantage this place has over the one downtown. They didn't have a couple things I was looking for which was a bummer. One of the things I was looking for was even included in a recipe card they had posted up and, yet, they still didn't have it. Atmosphere is pretty sterile. Seems clear (at least at the time I went about a month ago) that they threw the place together quickly. Just some display racks, a cement floor, and a couple burlap bags slapped haphazardly on the walls. Nothing to make it feel warm and inviting. You just want to get in there, grab what you need and go. Contrast that with some of the other specialty spice stores I've been that are set up in such a way that you want to linger and think of all the wonderful things you could cook if you only had the spices to do it. In that case, I end up spending much more. So, on second thought, maybe it's better (for my pocketbook) that the place is cold and uninviting. read more
