Nice little restaurant at the corner of Broadway and pacific Coast highway in downtown Laguna beach. Met some friends for dinner at Peony on a Saturday evening before we went to a movie at the Rivian theater which is 2 doors down on pch. Our server was cookie, and he was fantastic. Attentive, cheerful, and pleasantly talkative. Offering menu and drink suggestions without being pushy or high pressure. We settled on 3 main dishes and rice. Everything was tasty. I think that the mushu pork was my favorite. My buddy's wife treated me so I can't speak to the prices but everything that I saw on the menu seemed to be reasonable. I'm looking forward to coming back and bringing my girlfriend to try Peony for herself. Also highly recommend Peony if you're going to an event at the Rivian theater. Parking in downtown Laguna beach is always going to be challenging. Unfortunately peony doesn't have its' own lot that I could see so street parking or parking off site and riding the trolley is going to be the best options. read more

Peony was a last minute dinner stop for me on a solo trip to Laguna. Ended up being a solid choice! The location is great, just across the street from the beach in downtown Laguna. I sat outdoors and got to enjoy live music. I am a bit of a mapo tofu snob so I ordered that and a strawberry mojito. The mojito was seriously delicious and very refreshing. The mapo tofu was vegetarian off the bat (yay!) and has a delicious, flavorful sauce. The tofu itself wasn't quite silken or soft enough... it seems like it was very slightly cooked on the outside, which is not how traditional mapo is made. I didn't love that texture personally. Wow! Peony was a fantastic experience. We were seated on a Saturday night surprisingly right away. The customer service was top-notch and the food was delicious. I ordered the orange chicken and my girlfriend ordered the Beijing duck and Dan Dan noodles. I was really surprised because the orange chicken tasted much healthier than panda express but was also made with quality ingredients and came out hot and fresh. Our nice waiter noticed me using my paper napkins to sop up the oil under my order of Black Pepper Beef Steak & offered to take it back to the kitchen to remove more of the oil. I appreciated that and thanked him for his attention. It was returned less oily and I must say the beef was plentiful, tender and tasty (though still a bit too oily for my taste). The rice was very good: cooked to perfection and not at all oily. My wife ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken, which I sampled from her plate and was given the rest of from her "take home" container. The sauce help to make it a more flavorful dish. The chicken was tender and soft, however, without the sauce, it was bland and tasted odd. At home the next day I examined several of the pieces and wondered why, when each piece was cut in half and the sauce removed, it looked different from the white meat I was used to. There seemed to be something unusual about its fiber and structure and the way it came apart in layers. The waiter was competent and attentive and the outside environment, near the beach, was enjoyable so, altogether, my experience was "OK." read more

I was thinking that the chinese food would be dirty in a greasy junk food way. Instead, I felt like I was eating healthy. I was left satisfied in terms of filling my belly but not with that heavy feeling after eating fried junk food. Perhaps out of bad luck, I remember my fortune cookie being empty of the paper fortune note. I felt that was odd. Value: 3 Stars. I paid $15 for a lunch special. How do I feel about that? I think I came with the wrong expectations. Given the location, in Laguna Beach, everything is going to be more expensive. While not too long ago I had lunch at a Mr. Wok chinese food for $10 and left with left-overs. Peony beats Mr. Wok on quality of their food but Mr. Wok won in the quantity category. I'm giving Peony a 4 because I can't give a 3.5- Food was hot, order was correct, the price is great for Laguna, and overall it was decent... with that said, the egg rolls were a bit garlicky, the wontons not super creamy (possibly made with egg to thicken?), the noodles were more of a spaghetti type noodle, and the orange chicken wasn't the typical thick crunchy chicken but more of chicken chunks tossed in Orange sauce. Maybe it's my own fault for calling in a pickup order 30 minutes before they were scheduled to close- Sunday Last week I admit I did just that and got sort of a funny feeling when I arrived 15 minutes later (about 9:15pm, they closed at 9:30pm) to find only two young employees cleaning a completely empty restaurant. Based on the other reviews I'd read, I half expected there to be some customers enjoying a late dinner. I brushed those thoughts aside and picked up my order. As soon as I got home I made myself a plate of some pork fried rice, Mongolian Beef, and a couple pot stickers. The food tasted fine, I didn't think it was as good as the Chinese I ordered earlier in the week from a nearby competitor (I was in town House Sitting so trying restaurants I had never been to before.). I only had the one plate, for some reason I didn't go back for seconds, and went to bed a couple hours later. At around 1 or 2 in the morning I woke up sweating with some pretty intense stomach pain. I had a pretty serious bout of food poisoning a few years ago, so know the feeling and I made my way to the restroom to deal with the implications. Not fun. I had a few more waves of symptoms lasting into the next day. I threw out the leftovers first thing in the morning. They've got some good reviews so I'm sure it was just bad luck but that was my experience. read more

Peony Chinese Kitchen is located across the street from Main Beach. There is a large outdoor dining patio area shared by several restaurants located within the food court. Dogs are welcome on the patio. They have a really reasonable lunch menu and dogs are allowed, so my friend and I regularly dine here for lunch. The lunch service is always very professional and quick. I ordered the Garlic Prawns with broccoli and I chose the purple rice. The food is really tasty. It was my first visit and I had no idea where to park and as you all know LB is NOT the easiest to find parking. Peony used to be in Lake Forest as the Olive Tree inside a hotel and it was our go-to Chinese take out spot. We were sad to see it leave Lake Forest because there isn't anything else like it in the area. We were glad they are still around in Laguna Beach as Peony! We finally got to try it again and its just as good maybe better than before. The food is still great, but the location and staff make it greater than before. We got the classic spicy chicken wings which we always got. Chow mein, general tsaos chicken, mongolian beef, and orange chicken were all excellent. While in Laguna on business, I stumbled upon great review for this small chinese restaurant so I decided to give them a try for lunch. It was pretty empty inside but we were cordially greeted and shown to our table. We each opted for the Kung Pao Chicken lunch special with an added veggie egg roll. The food came out quickly and I can say it was one of the best Kung Pao Chicken meals I have ever had. The portions were a nice side and the dish was not dripping in sauce like so many other places. Instead, the meat and veggies were nicely glazed with the sauce. My only complaint is that they tear up the dried chiles into small pieces rather than keeping them whole which made it a bit difficult to pick them out. And if you did get a piece, it was rather tough and took away from the enjoyment of the meal. Overall, I'd return there again. Today around 11:40 AM, we came to this Chinese restaurant. The place was almost completely empty -- no more than two tables occupied, with plenty of empty tables both inside and outside. The three of us sat at an outdoor table that was completely free. After a few minutes, a waitress came over and, without any greeting, told us that the table was "for 5-6 people" and asked us to move. We were not even offered menus. While we were calmly looking at the menu and hadn't yet decided whether to order, another employee came over and started insisting that we move inside, referring to the "holiday (Christmas) season" and claiming that the table was reserved for other guests. This made absolutely no sense: * it was 11:40 in the morning, not a busy evening * the restaurant was nearly empty * there were plenty of other available tables * we clearly explained that we just wanted to eat quickly and leave within 20-30 minutes Instead of providing normal service, we were made to feel unwelcome and pushed out of our seats, as if we were a problem. This kind of behavior is unprofessional and unacceptable. In the end, we got up and left without ordering anything. I do not recommend this restaurant. If you expect basic courtesy and respectful service, look elsewhere. read more

We ate there today for lunch. This location is difficult to find and parking is not easy although there are several lots but you'll pay $10-20 to park. It's worth it. Service - the service was excellent - very friendly and helpful throughout the meal. Food - very helpful in getting us exactly the dishes we wanted to try. Mu Shu pork - excellent Chicken Cashew - an excellent chow mein with very fresh vegetables. I want to like this place but they are trying too hard to be "good". Their orange chicken had no orange sauce on it. There was like a teaspoon of it in the bottom of the plate could barely get any of that flavor over any of the chicken which was not breaded or crispy but just cubed chicken heavily sautéed and dry. The honey walnut shrimp was the same, lacking any sauce they only gave me a thimble full of sauce. I distributed across all shrimp I was only able to get a drop of sauce on each. Meanwhile the flavor of the burned oil was heavily taking over the shrimps(and the chickens) flavor. It was not good. I spent a lot of money. The sauces had good flavor but they need to put some please. These dishes the sauce is what makes them shine. In other restaurants I have seen orange chicken that were lightly breaded and pan fried or just not even breaded with a deliciously dark red orange sauce with orange peels and chillies and and it can be a success if the sauce is good. I don't know why I can't find anyone else who can make a good sauce does so cal people not care about good cuisine? Needs sauce! read more
