He eye-balled the bike and gave me a quote after I told him what the issues were, and even though he put new brake cables in and did a bit more service than I had originally expected, the price hadn't budged. I am a fairly serious 5000 mile per year cyclist and was super excited to hear that the local bike shop was being kept going by a new owner, how great is that for all of us in Beacon right? Unfortunately I have stopped in three times for three different fairly basic bike shop items and left three times with out the parts and pretty lackluster experience. The first time I popped in I had a decently high end Zipp wheel which needed a standard straight pull spoke replaced and the wheel trued. I was told that they don't carry spokes and really didn't feel like ordering any either. Went to Bikeway in Wappingers and had it fixed in an hour for $20. The second time I went in was for a replacement BB30 bottom bracket for my road bike which is the industry standard and found on probably 90-95% of all road bicycles in the past decade or so. Sorry we don't carry those. Went to Wheel and Heel in Wappingers and a few bucks later had a new bottom bracket. The final time I went in was for a set of brake pads for my road bike. They are a mid-tier name brand make, which are a highly replaced item, unfortunately they don't carry those brake pads. Called up Bokeway, and they have a set put aside for me. Perhaps if you need a water bottle or a tube replace this might be the shop to go-to but after three let downs, as much as I want to support this small local shop, I'm left with no other options but to go elsewhere... read more

Peoples Bicycle is awesome!!!! They have a great staff and were very knowledgeable when it came to all my questions. The guys and gal in the shop had me rolling on the floor from the second I walked through the door. They are very fairly priced compared to the other shops in and around town. This place is great. I was visiting from San Francisco and happened upon this shop. One of the guys generously offered to take my niece and nephew for a ride on their super pedicab, and as I waited and looked at their collection of refurbished old bikes, I asked them if they happened to have a part for my bike that no bike shop in SF had. They did! So instead of having to get a new $80 hub and gear for my bike, I got the $8 part that they sold me. Apparently they stockpile old parts. read more

John, the owner is an arrogant guy. I'm willing to pay him Full Price ($250 cash) for his bike for sale. The day of sale he jerks me for another ten dollars for cab fare, "ok John" I said, "you can have the extra ten dollars". When he delivers the bike I'll buy, he haggles me for a lousy $15 bucks I want for my Schwinn ten speed. He's not really a communists. he's a cheap capitalists who dicks for few extra bucks and initially he wanted me to sell my Schwinn for "donut", nothing. I walked away from deal and I'm glad I did it but only after he said he wanted to walk from it first. read more

I moved to Beacon almost a year ago with no car. I got a freebie junker bike from a local charity (can't use the name here, but think of the most pathetic way I could get a used bike... .) As that bike became my "car", it needed some serious upgrades. People's Bicycle was amazing. Yeah they chuckled when I told them I got the bike at...that place. After a tune-up and the addition of several accesories, though, "ghettobike" looks and rides pretty gooood. It couln't have been done without People's Bicycle. All of the staff was helpful and courteous. Best of all, they transform my junker into a functional vehicle (complete with front and back racks, slick tires, water bottle cage, and nightime back blinker) for around 0ne hundred bucks. I don't think the workers are arrogant (as mentioned in a previous review.) I just think they really know their stuff about bikes. read more

People's Bicycle is an awesome bike shop. I work across the river in Newburgh and was looking for a local bike shop to help me fix a beat up old thing I found on the street. The extremely helpful staff explained to me it was junk and helped me try out a few other models. There was no pressure with a sales pitch and they even let me ride the bike around town to test it out! Moral of the story is that the prices are more then fair, the selection is great and the staff is helpful. Bonus points: People's Bicycle is active within the community and donates bikes to causes and individuals that need them. More businesses need to follow this model... read more

To my own detriment... I'm a form over function person. So when People's Bicycle first opened I chose the bike with the most character... and quite a bit of rust! Thankfully Jon, the owner, is as hell-bent as I am on keeping my sweet 1950's British Rollfast beach cruiser running smooth and looking sharp. I take it in for the occasional tune-up and Jon makes sure to give my bike, and all bikes that come through there, his full attention. He also custom fitted a new seat for me. My "iron horse" may be a little rough around the edges and isn't the most practical ride in a hilly town, but People's Bicycle appreciates the aesthetics of a beautiful vintage bike as much as I do. There's never a downside to supporting a business with a lot of heart! read more

These guys are great. I came in off the street with one heck of a mess of a bike on my hands thanks to a botched tune up at another local jip-joint that shall remain nameless here. (However a little bit of research about me will reveal the true identity....) they had my ride in and out in under three hours and running in top notch condition. No upsell on other products/services either.......only negative would have to be the crazy driveway watchdogs next door. one encounter with any one of them has the potential to completely ruin your day. read more

This place is amazing. I finally had a chance to go there after a friend told me all about the stuff they do. My friend and i went in for a couple of wheels from a children's bike to build a bike trailer. When they found out i was to cart food for Food Not Bombs, (a international network of groups providing free community meals, promoting peace and rescuing edible food from the waste stream) they gave us a bike trailer they had laying around for free!! They were wonderful. When we got there he told us he didn't have the wheels there, but we could come back tomorrow when the warehouse was open, but as soon as a co-worker showed up we went with us to the warehouse and gave us a free trailer. He refused to take my money since he was familiar with food not bombs and supported our work. Everyone we met there was super nice and fun to talk to. Please support this shop!!!! read more

This is the bike we have all been waiting for! Great people who are really passionate about mountain biking and the community they live in. A really refreshing atmosphere that makes you feel like riding bikes is something everyone can and should do. Andrew, the head mechanic, is absolutely amazing and offers services that other bike shops would have to go through a third party for. John, the owner, is super friendly and is really passionate about what he does. Being in this bike shop makes you wanna shred all day err day and that's the best compliment I can give.
