Pep boys in Hamden is an extremely poorly run business. My grandfather is in his late 80s with many health problems and was left sitting in pep boys for six hours while he was waiting for service. The staff took walk ins and helped other customers cars get fixed, passing my grandfather by until the shop was closed. Not only did he wait that long, they never even touched his car. When he asked the manager why they took everyone else before him and didn't fix the car, they completely disregarded him and closed the shop. Two days later he returned and waited another five hours while they fixed his car only to find that they completely missed the problem and did a job on an unrelated part. They refused to give him his full refund and he is currently in the process of reporting the business. I am a nurse and consider this unfair treatment elderly abuse. He argued with staff and management only to be dismissed and disrespected. He stated that several customers came in angry and arguing with staff regarding similar issues during his time there. Do not trust this business with your car or your time. read more

DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO WAIT 8 HOURS TO BE SCAMMED. I recently went into this store with a nail in my tire that I needed plugged. I waited for 4 HOURS after my appointment time. Finally, at 4pm I was called over for "bad news". The sales person explained to me that all 4 of my tires were bald. He said the tires currently on my car were factory tires and they hadn't been replaced since I purchased the car. Even though I've had my tires replaced as recently as 2 years ago. It didn't matter, they were bald and dangerous and I was in danger of a blow out. The bad news didn't stop there, he continued that my battery was dead. He didn't even know if my car would start. I stepped out to make a phone call, because this didn't seem right. When I couldn't get ahold of someone for a second opinion I had to make the game time choice. I went with their opinion. I just wanted my car to be safe, I was scared I wouldn't have a working vehicle. So, I told them to go ahead and asked how long it'll be since I had already been here 4 hours. I was told it would be 2 hours more. I went home and finally got ahold of a second opinion, where I learned I had just made a very expensive mistake. I was taken advantage of for my lack of car knowledge and fear of not having a working vehicle. After 3 hours of waiting at home I called the store for an update. I was informed it would be another 30 min, so 30 min later I ubered back. Unfortunately my car was not done. At this point I have been waiting 7.5 hours for my car and the store closes soon. It was explained to me there was a default on the original tires being installed and that they are putting even nicer ones on for me. It was at this moment I realized, no one ever asked me what tires I wanted. They put whatever they assumed was best, I'm sure not taking price into account. It wasn't until after 8pm that they finished up my car. I had to ask for an itemized receipt as they pulled up the charge for $1300. At this point I needed to speak to a manager. I explained to him how utterly wrong it is to take advantage of people in this fashion. I shouldn't have to call a second opinion to check their work when bringing my car into them, the experts. I shouldn't need to worry I am being scammed, and I certainly shouldn't have to wait over 8 hours to do so. He told me he would go take a look at my tires. After a couple minutes he called me into the shop to take a look. Miraculously, my tires had perfect tread on them. They were not bald as I had previously been told. He showed me the nail in the tire that originally brought me in. Because of its placement on the tire, it could not be plugged safely. This would have resulted in 2 new back tires, fine. What about the 2 front? He proceeded to show me other nails in the other tires. He showed me multiple plugs in those tires and said I cannot plug a tire more than twice. It was all the nails and plugs in my other tires that made it so I needed 4 new ones. Except, I have only had one of my tires plugged before. I could see that plug on the tire and it looked different than these other plugs he was showing me on the tires with these new nails in them. I voiced my concern, I HADN'T HAD THESE TIRES PLUGGED, why did the plugs on those tires look different? The manager shrugged and said they're just smaller plugs. It's also worth mentioning that my tire pressure was only ever low on the one tire. I can't help but wonder if those nails were placed there after realizing that I had in-fact been scammed. At the end of the day it wasn't worth the argument, what was I going to accuse them of sabotaging my tires? This kind of behavior is disgusting. I don't understand how ethically you can take advantage of costumers like this by feeding them false information and fear. Pep-boys in Hamden does not protect their customers. They are slimy and just looking to make their sale. I would hate for any other customer who is only concerned about having a safe vehicle have the same experience I had. I had an excellent experience with Pep Boys! My boyfriend and I were driving through Connecticut back to NYC last month, and our car broke down on the side of the street at 7pm on a Sunday. The team at Pep Boys had us tow our car and leave it there overnight, and the next morning they got to work and helped us out. Shaun helped keep the price as low as can be, and the car was fixed quickly and thoroughly. While driving home from work I stopped at Pep Boys, Hamden because my breaks were making noise. They said there was mud in the brake pads and they would clean them for free. By accident lost a bolt to the brake. It took almost 48 hours for them to get the part and I lost a day of work. On the second day I had to rent a car to get to work. I gave them a call and they told me to come in 15 mins before close and checked out my car and made sure i was safe to drive back to NYC. I really appreciated that they took the time to help me even after closing and gave me the reassurance i needed. Made an appointment to patch a tire at noon, they didn't bring my car into the garage until 1:15, ended up being like 2 hours to get this done. Obvious lack or urgency around here, as nice as they are I don't want to spend my afternoon at PEPBOYS when I made an appointment UPDATE 10 Months later: SAME TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE- it does not matter if you have an appt, I had one for when they opened at 9 and it is 10:45 and they have still not worked on my car. Let me start off by saying, I loathe mechanics and repair shops. Its a horrible truth but I always feel like they take advantage of my naivete to stick me with the most expensive repairs. I thought that by going to a chain store I would be spared the headache of inflated estimates and "issues" that magically appear out of thin air. I was wrong. Came here for an oil change and overall safety inspection. They came back and told me I had a laundry list of issues (on a car that I only recently purchased) and the repairs would run over $1000. SAY WHAT?! Two days later I took my car to a certified dealer and asked for the same safety inspection. The dealer came back with one minor repair totaling $220. Perplexed by the whopping difference, I asked the mechanic at the dealer about the other issues bought up by Pep Boys, he explained that these were just maintenance jobs that were recommended after a car has certain mileage but not necessary (as the guy at Pep Boys led me to believe). I'm only giving them 2 stars because the store does have a wide selection of auto supplies at a fair price. Worth going for auto supplies but avoid the repair shop at all cost. read more

They should be ashamed of themselves. I got my vehicle towed here and diagnosed. The diagnostic fee came out to be $103. ..and may I add for about a half an hour's worth of time. They said the fuel pump needed to be replaced and that they could get it done by that evening (from 8pm-9pm when they closed) I was quoted that it would cost $957 to get it done. That's crazy!!! I marched down there and said what could possibly cost that for one hour's worth of work. They said, well that it was a 3.5 hour job, but since they didn't have much going on in the shop at the moment, that they could get all hands on deck and get it done. Essentially, instead of paying for work hours for one person to do it, I would be paying for multiple hands getting it done in just 1 hour. Sounds like too many cooks spoil the soup too me. No thanks. I took is down to a small place in Stamford, they fixed it for $575 and threw in the tow to get it down there. They told me my brakes, calipers and rotors needed to be changed.. Charged me $956 for the repairs.. I then got back on the highway to go home and the problem still existed!! Even though the wait was long for a tire change (about 2 hours) they were upfront with letting me know they were backed up. Apparently they were understaffed and very busy. I purchased the buy one get one free deal online, and they accidentally only ordered 2 of the tires I needed. However, they were super nice about it and hooked me up with higher quality tires for the same bogo price! He was extremely friendly and helpful! Best experience at a tire center ever! Not only did they take the car right away but he helped me find a new jack for the car (actually as we were walking to checkout he came across a kit for the same price but had extra accessories)! When I made my appointment, I checked and found a replacement tire in stock at the store for 75.00..when the guy gave m e the estimate, he tried to sell me a 135.00 tire!! Being a girl who just moved to the East Coast, it's really easy to feel completely overwhelmed by buying a used car especially after getting scammed on the first used car I bought here. I decided to take the next car I was going to buy off CL into the mechanic this time. Long story short, the guys here were AMAZING. Larry really took his customer service to the next level and I was extremely comforted knowing I was in good hands. He treated me like his own daughter and I really needed that. He had his master mechanic look over the car for me and they ended up saving me about 5,000 of repairs if I had bought this car (just shy of 9K including the car). Once again the guy off of CL said had "absolutely no problems." And they ended up giving me a ride home:) Best 100 dollars I've spent. When I told them I didnt want full synthetic they told me there was nothing they could do because the computer was telling them thats what my car needed- talked to me like I was a "girl"... little did they know I am the daughter of a mechanic. So the guy calls me and tells me that my oil pan bolt is stripped and it's $300 to do the oil change and repair the bolt this is not my first car. I was initially going to post a five star review of Pep Boys. I recently had my battery replaced by them and they did a great job and gave me a great price for it. One of the service managers Juan (very tall with glasses) is the best guy to talk to about any problems in your car that you want to address. I went in to get a simple oil change and I had brought my own supplies to have it done. I was told the wait would be approximately two hours. I decided to make the wait fun and get lunch/go shopping. I ended up coming back three hours later, surprised that I hadn't received a phone call within that time. I find out that they "were waiting for me" and that my car (surprise!) has an oil leak. I was told that there's no way I can drive my car and that he's surprised my engine hasn't blown yet. I've had a minor leak for years so it's funny that he's blowing it to this proportion considering I had my car looked at just three days before I brought it in for the oil change. I decided to go along with what he was saying to find out how much everything was going to cost and I was told that this information could not be found until the following day. I told them I would like five quarts of oil in my car so I can just drive out of there or get myself towed and immediately the response changed. I was receiving offers to fix it with a weld and even the mechanic came up to me and told me he thought it could be fixed without a part or labor. Then, magically, the cost of the parts and labor were "found" and they wanted me to still leave my car to have it done. I was adamant on leaving in my car and asked for my other bottle of oil to be placed in my car. When I got in my car I realized the oil wasn't there and it took two phone calls and two visits in to finally get the bottle back only to find out that two quarts of it had been added in addition to the other five quarts that I had requested. I felt extremely taken advantage of having spent five hours waiting for my car without any definite solutions to anything to the point where I felt worn down enough to agree to whatever the associates were telling me. I needed to get a new battery in my car. I called ahead to PepBoys and someone on the phone told me to come down and they'd be able to get it done quickly. Unfortunately, I never got their name because when I got there, no one knew what I was talking about. I drove 30 minutes after having to jump my car to be told that they can't see me that day. The employee I spoke to that night scheduled me for an appointment the next morning at 8am. I asked how long it would take because I have work at 10am and he assured me that it would be done well before that since batteries only take 20 minutes. I drove home (30 minutes). The next morning, I had to jump my car because I know my battery is dead. I will accept that I showed up 12 minutes late to my appointment because it took me longer to jump than I thought it would, that's on me. I get to my appointment at 8:12 and I have to say, the two employees I worked with were the most apathetic people I've ever met. Barely a "hello" or eye contact. I've worked customer service for a third of my life and I know opening shifts at 8am are horrible. No one likes them, but don't be bad at your job if your job is to talk with people. They weren't rude by any means, but I can tell that they definitely did not want to be there. So back to showing up 12 minutes late to an appointment. I give them my car by around 8:17 after all of the paperwork and such and I'm told to hang out in their waiting area. Luckily I had my phone to watch almost half of Endgame by the time I realized that a battery change should not be taking an hour. At about 9:10, I go back up to the person at the desk who barely made eye contact with me when talking. I asked about my car and they went to the back and it said it would be another 20 minutes...you mean the amount of time I was told it would take in the first place? What was going on for the past hour? At about 9:45 I go back up to the desk, another 35 minutes and I see the same employee checking in someone. Afterward, the gentleman left and I walked up to the desk. Without saying a SINGLE WORD OR LOOKING AT ME, the employee started typing on the computer so I assumed they were doing the other guys paperwork still. Then they gestured at the computer and said my price was ~$200. I actually had to say, "is that for me?" Because you could have been talking to literally anyone in the store. Maybe a greeting, a smile, eye contact. I'm not asking for backflips, just some common courtesy. I paid and got my car... At about 9:49, the second employee who drove my car around, who according to the paperwork was the one who fixed my car, got out of the car and walked back into the shop. Never said anything or LOOKED ME IN THE EYE. That could have not been my car and they would have never known. I could have been some guy standing outside the shop having a smoke and they would have just given me a free car. When I got in my car, the clock that was reset when the battery was disconnected and reconnected and read 1:20. Which means that they had to have done something to reset my car's clock 80 MINUTES PRIOR TO GETTING IT BACK. So just to some it up, I got to the place at 8:12, gave them my car by 8:17, and got it back by 9:49. They had my car for a total of 92 minutes. So my question is, what did you do with my car for all that time? If you disconnected and reconnected a new battery 80 minutes ago, why/how did it take you that long to bring my car around? TL;DR Don't go here. Go literally anywhere else. I should have just bought the battery, watched a YouTube video, gotten electrocuted, gone to the hospital to have them restart my heart, go through weeks of painful rehabilitation, and tried to replace my battery a second time...and I think that experience wouldn't have been as painful as the one I had being inside of the PepBoys for a total of 97 minutes. Not counting the fact I had to drive 30 minutes there to be turned away last tonight, to drive 30 minutes home, to drive 30 minutes back to the shop at 8am, to drive home 30 minutes, and show up two hours late to work AFTER I WAS ASSURED IT WOULD ONLY TAKE 20 MINUTES. read more

The customer service from the employee, Shay at Hamden's Pep Boys was TERRIBLE. She ignored me as I approached the register and didn't acknowledge me for AT LEAST two or three minutes. She had an extremely rude attitude and was miserable and unhelpful. Overall it was a terrible experience, awful service and not worth my time. read more

At 8:10am as Larry FINALLY got around to checking me in, I asked "my appointment time was 8:00am, how long is this going to be(alignment &balance)" Larry then tells me, "well my guys are just getting in, (AT 8:10!!! when I have an 8:00am APPOINTMENT), alignment takes about an hour, balance about a half hour, oh you should be out around 10:00am..... Ok ..... I'm sitting there... at 8:28am I get up to go look in the parking lot to see if my car had been taken in, NOPE! I went back in, got my keys and left! 5, 10 mins after A SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT, ok... 30 mins., I don't effn think so! HAMDEN PEP BOYS, YALL SUCK!!! DO BETTER!!! I brought my car in for issues with it not starting. This was a car bought sight unseen from Carvana and needed a full look over, I was there from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at that point they gave me a Uber ride home and told me they would call me at the end of the day when the car was ready. As I was leaving the shop I got a text saying the car was ready but Alexa told me to proceed to go home and she would handle the claim and call me by the end of the business day. The car was completed and all the work done by 4:00 p.m. when I did not hear from Alexa, I went back to the shop at 6:30 p.m. and a gentleman told me she had left for the day. He asked what information I had regarding silver rock and the payment. I said you were to handle that and he said honestly ma'am we were so busy today. We never even called to get the authorization after the work was done. Due to all this confusion I had to pay out of pocket so that I would have my car for the next day for work. Do not bring you car here unless you want to end up with a blown engine or expensive car repairs. I went to this location for a oil change on a Audi Q5. The oil change was taking over 2 hours which made me feel as if they didn't know what they were doing or something went wrong. When I left pep boys my check engine light was on and it wasn't on when I brought it in. I left due to the time and the fact I had been there for hours. I returned the next day to say the car is showing me on the dash I have no oil in the car and now my check engine is on. I again let them back under my hood which was a huge mistake ! The techs opened the hood not one of the 4 people standing outside knew what they were looking at under the hood of the car everyone started to use YouTube which pissed me off. They put my car on the lift and a few hours go by so much time that I ask for my car back because at this point I'm convinced they don't know what they are doing. Long story short they broke things underneath the car zip tied things back together and I have a huge oil leak that caused me to almost blow my engines. No oil was in the engine all of the oil had spilled down to other parts underneath muffler etc which if my car gets hot enough which cause a fire. After this oil change I've spent hundreds of dollars elsewhere on repairs due to the fact that they fucked up the oil change causing oil to spill out on other parts. The store is fine - plenty of inventory in stock. My review is for their repair center. Someone already used the word Vultures to describe the repair crew here. Seems like a perfect description. Suddenly - I'm facing a dead battery which I need to replace - the day before Xmas. Should have been a simple transaction. We don't typically bring our vehicles to auto chain places like these, but it didn't make sense to bother our trusted mechanic with a battery issue - so we decided to give them a try. We dropped it off and within 15 minutes - I get a call from them stating that indeed the battery was completely dead - needs replacing - and my alternator was defective. Realizing that we were stressed - right before Xmas - he said that he can get it done for us within a few hrs - roughly $1000. I scoffed at that price....(because logically - it seemed a bit high) . His response was - we could always get a Pep Boys Credit Card to cover the cost. We told them that we only want them to put in a new battery - nothing else. That's when the full-court press started. They insisted that we wouldn't be able to go more than a few miles because it will die again without a functioning alternator. We repeated - put in the battery - nothing else. We go to pick it up and they continued with the pressure. "You really need a new alternator" - "You won't get too far without a new alternator." SO I call my mechanic - someone I truly trust - and we drive it to him - 4 miles away. We were prepared to leave it with my mechanic - until after the holidays. I mean - if I do need a new alternator - I'm going to have someone I trust do the work - not Pep Boys. I get a call that night telling - telling me that I can pick up the vehicle - because there wasn't anything wrong with the alternator whatsoever. Works perfectly. No charge!!!!!! Why would Pep Boys - tell me my alternator is not working - when it was working fine? I can only wonder how many other people potentially fall victim to this kind of stuff at Pep Boys? My advice is stay away. Vultures. PS - they obviously used something to push or bump the vehicle into the garage (remember the batterywas completely dead) because it left a big, ugly mark on the back bumper. Rip off. I went just to get a headlight changed. I've previously had this done at the dealer but wanted to take care of it on a Sunday and figured how much different could the price be for a headlight? It turned out to be $35 which I knew sounded high but I was already there so I agreed to it thinking it probably wasn't that much more than I'd paid before. Wrong. When i got home I dug up the receipt and found I had only paid $16 for the dealer to change the same bulb last time. The price of the bulb itself was comparable but Pep Boys charged about 5x more for "labor" (if you can call changing a light bulb labor). The staff was pretty condescending too. So so. More or less what you would expect from a pep boys. Long wait even after I had scheduled an appointment - almost 2 hours before they even looked at my car. Then after paying the diagnostic fee they said they could not do anything because they had to get parts from the dealer. Had to call them several times to find out what was happening - finally gave up and took my car somewhere else. Never again. read more

I would give less than one star if I could! Went in for something routine and they quoted me for everything under the sun that I didn't need for almost $600 - including five bulbs! I declined then took my car to my dad's mechanic who told me that I have zero bulbs out! That is beyond shady! Also one of the problems I encountered was due to their negligence and I will be making a call to their corporate headquarters tomorrow! Very upset!!! read more

Do not use this Pep Boys location! Just look at the average rating of this place and you can see that it is half of any other Pep Boys location. My wife went to do an oil change. The guy there told her that the battery is dead. Not weak or toward the end of its life but dead! She told him she didn't have any problem with the battery until coming to the shop. He insisted that the car doesn't turn on!! My wife let me talk with the guy over the phone - he still insisted that the battery is dead. They replaced the battery (what choice did she have?) and I switched the car with my wife and drove back there. I asked to see the old battery and replaced the battery back to the original battery. Magic - it worked perfectly ok. The repair manager started to bs me, he brought the battery machine and told me that it broke down, that the guys had a miscommunication etc' etc'. Bottom line - systematic fraud. Update: the shop manager called me and compensated me for the lost time which was nice. However, this hasn't solved the systemic fraud issue. 9 out of 10 people just replace the battery. read more
