I brought my car in on 8/18 to check the brakes and the rattling exhaust. They fixed the brakes and told me to come back sometime for the welder to fix 2 small spots that need to be welded on the heat shield. Lillian the manager said to just show up and it would be taken care of. About a week later, I decided to call ahead of time rather than just show up, and Lillian told me to wait until the following week because the welder was on vacation. I waited until today 9/23 to call back to make an appointment and the manager on told me to just come down, that it would take 45 minutes. I sent my 17 year old son and he called me when they were done saying it was going to be $418! For 45 minutes of work! That Lillian had led me to believe was free, after my car spent the entire day there back in August! I am furious. Edit: Spoke with the Vice President on 9/24 and he took care of it. Absolute scam. Bought a Groupon for an oil change. The Groupon says 'all oil changes include 5 quarts of full synthetic oil'. When I went to get my oil changed I was told I chose the wrong package, should've bought the $62 one; should be no big deal (even tho the description says full synthetic is included) why not just apply what I've already paid and I can pay the difference? Except now it's being applied to a full price change, so the difference is $85. So instead of a $30 oil change or a $62 oil change, it's $120. Can't even get the Groupon refunded, absolute garbage. I'll eat the $30 before I give this scam company another cent. read more

Everyone made sure I was ok, helped direct traffic around the accident, put hazard lights on my car. They had me bring my car over afterward and put my car up on the lift to make sure nothing was leaking. My bumper was broken and they cut it for me, so it wasn't hanging off and I could drive. Requested repairs on returning customer's vehicle: Monro on Skiff Street in Hamden CT nearly doubled the amount they quoted without checking with me first to update the initial quote I accepted. They left a voicemail that the car was ready without mentioning the increase of SEVERAL HUNDREDS of dollars. Complete shock right at the moment of payment before they returned the keys. Similarly disappointed with this business on other occasions. Staff are friendly but unreliable and inconsistent and either ignore or downplay the impact on the customer. read more

My boyfriend and I were on a road trip from Maine to New York when we started hearing a bad clunking sound and all my brake system alert lights lit up. We quickly got the car to the first open auto shop we could find which ended up being a foreign car shop that charged $70 for just looking at my car, estimated $1000 for the necessary work, and told us they didn't even have the parts and couldn't do it until at least the next day. After desperately calling a few places, Monro picked up and told us to come by and that they could fix it right away!! Immediately they were incredibly welcoming and helpful. After an assessment, they got to work and quoted $677- a LOT better than the other place! I went here a few times for oil changes and once for a brake rotor. Those interactions weren't terrible, except for a dingy atmosphere. However, I brought my car in for service three months ago after the battery terminal corroded causing the the car to fail to start. They rolled my car out to me, supposedly ready to go, but it didn't start. I had to Uber back home as they replaced the starter and picked it up hours later. Later on, I researched the cost of the parts and concluded I had likely been overcharged. That day, my car also began making a groaning noise whenever I turned the wheel, which I got fixed elsewhere. At this point, I had decided just to stop using them and let it go. Fast-forward, I had the exact same issue happen with my battery corrosion. I brought it to another mechanic, who told me it looked like some very shoddy work had been done on my vehicle. Some bolts and covers were missing, and wires were improperly tightened, possibly resulting in the issue I'm experiencing now. If you care about your vehicle or your pocket, I strongly suggest you avoid this shop. read more

I felt so comfortable from then on and with the weather in the high 70s I was offered a water while waiting. From giving the best price on a simple front headlight change to successfully rebuilding a nightmare rear wheel bearing job on a rusted-out 2002 Subaru Forester. I can't thank the whole crew enough. I had four new tires put on my vehicle and the mechanic did not tighten the lug nuts correctly. I was washing my car today and discovered two lug nuts missing. I went around and checked each tire and end up finding almost half of the bolts loose. Definitely not what i expected for the price. Luckily I caught it before it was too late... who knows what could have happened. Will never have them touch any vehicle of mine ever again. read more

Awful! Awful! Awful! Do NOT bring your car here. They will rip you off. I dropped my car off here as I suspected that I might be in need of new brakes. They called me a short while later claiming that my car needed $1,400 worth of work (new brakes, new rotors, new calipers, a new brake hose...the whole nine yards). Luckily, I trusted my instincts and refused their service. The very next day I brought my car to my usual (but farther away), trusty mom & pop shop to have it re-checked out by them. Turns out that there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with my car!! I didn't even need new brakes as I had about a half of a pad left all the way around. Monro in Hamden should NOT be trusted. DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE!!!! Brought my car in for a oil change and an issue with the coolant and they told me it take half a day to fix but it took 3 DAYS TO FIX! Absolutely ridiculous. Also when I got my car back the check engine light is still on and the car is driving worse than what it was before. After reading other reviews I am convinced that they purposely messed up other parts of the car in order to get me to go back and have them fix that too but no way, don't trust the bastards at all. My oil pan plug was not placed on properly after an oil change which caused me to loose oil. The manager tried to rectify the situation,but was unsuccessful. I was given a refund a week later after my request which was too late long. It shouldn't have taken this long,because it didn't take this long to pay for my oil change. I've been going to Monro in other locations for ten years. This one has consistently done work on both my cars for one year and each time, they would say a car would be ready and it wasn't, the manager is rude and has no customer service, and the work has been futile. I only went back multiple times because certain things have a warranty. I've been called to pick up my car, got there, and someone turned it on to check it and it still was making the same noise - don't people check before they call and say your car is ready? That has happened twice. Additionally the mechanics are understaffed and constantly changing. No one can manage appointments and work appropriately. I got work done and a muffler was under warranty and they couldn't find my car in the system even though I clearly had brought it there. The response to that was, well I was here when that came in. No apology for any work that isn't done right, for promising cars will be done and they aren't, for rude customer service. Nothing. I will never be going back here. read more

I can not stress enough how unpleasant using this store has been. My daughter took her car in for a caliper noise and oil change on Wednesday, and less than 24 hours later, the engine blew up! Not only that, but the manager, Rich, totally ripped her off by selling her stuff she didn't need including brake pads and rotors (which were replaced only 5 months ago!), and a brake flush, and slapped her with a hardware and shop supply fee! Ended up paying $700 for a job that should have cost only $300. Now she has a car that doesn't run, and is probably totaled, due to incompetence, so even the brake repairs are wasted! She was not given an inspection report, which further screams SCAM. I have been trying to speak to the district manager, Marco, for several days, but he has not called me back. I was hoping Monro could provide a rental car so my daughter can perform her job as an environmental inspector, but the store manager and headquarters customer service have refused to do that! I'm waiting to see how they are going to resolve this. I'll revise my review if they resolve this with integrity, but at this point, I'm not hopeful. I fear that I may need to go further up the ladder or, Consumer Protection, or even to court to resolve this matter. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS unless you want to be ripped off in a major way. A good mechanic should be looking out for, and ethically advising, their customers. Monro did just the opposite and now it's a nightmare. UPDATE: Three weeks later and this whole thing screams scam. They are refusing to take any responsibility and no one will return my calls. They referred it to their insurance company who said I have to PAY a mechanic to find the problem, otherwise they won't pay the fix anything. So essentially, Monro intentionally screws up your car hoping that you will bring it back for more repairs (yes they offered several time to fix my car at MY expense), and when they can't get more money out of you, they send you off on your way with a car that won't run.
