If I could give zero stars I would. This place is utterly ridiculous, with very incompetent staff. The staff is poorly trained with no knowledge. Shout out to Max Stuck, the service manager, for having the worst customer service skills I have encountered in my life. The service manager is unable to properly manage the store and is not equipped with the customer service knowledge or skillset to properly interact with customers. Instead of explaining to customers about their repairs needed for their car, the service manager complains about staffing issues and being swamped with work. In addition to not having the basic knowledge and/or skills on how to adequately and efficiently communicate with customer on necessary parts and/or equipment needed to properly install for tires, the service manager did not have the skill set to properly refund a wheel alignment that was not performed; however, I was charged for. Due to age of batteries of 2 of my cars, I had to purchase new batteries simultaneously on the same day. Rich the mgr helped me out and answered all my questions. I've used Pep Boys in the past, even have a PepBoys credit card, however I can't give a good review for this Joliet location. A few days ago I called at 8:00 when they opened for a low tire. I bought my tires from another PepBoys location and bought road hazard. When I showed for my appt I was told there was no appt in the computer and I'd have to come back later. The service rep made it clear he couldn't care less about me. But I returned at my later appt and was told there was nothing wrong with the tire, just needed air. Now here I am, 4 days later with a low tire again. So I called and was given an appt time for later in the day. I asked that he confirm the appt because he didn't even ask my name and the service rep became rude, sighed, and said What's Your name then? Whoa! This place is the worst! I plan on notifying the corporate office to let them know they can cancel my credit card. I've since called Discount Tire and have an appt for today. read more

I brought a used car with 131K miles in here because I was considering whether to purchase it and requested a full inspection which cost over $100. The mechanic said it's a piece of junk, which was totally unhelpful. He also spent about 15 minutes inspecting the car, and in the process made errors or missed issues entirely (e.g., the car rattles, said the rear suspension needs to be replaced, but it turned out replacing the front stabilizer bar solved the problem). The more frustrating thing is that he did not test for parasitic electrical drain, which turned out to be an issue with the car. I've heard similar bad stories about pep boys mechanics--overpriced and bad service. Beware if you're bringing your car here. I'd find a trustworthy local mechanic if you can. UPDATE FROM 1 TO 2 STARS: Although my bad experience can't be reversed, the manager of the store was quick to reply and offered a full refund. I appreciate his customer service, though I still am upset that the mechanic didn't detect several issues with the car which may have changed my decision to buy it. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION FOR ANY MECHANICAL ISSUES, THEY OVERCHARGE! I would give this location less than 1 star. Do NOT go to this location for any mechanical issues. I brought my 2006 Focus into this location and asked them to figure out what was wrong so that I can pass my emissions test. I was charged $100 for them to look at the car and then told my car needs $1000 worth of work to pass the emissions test. I then went to a mechanic down the street who was surprised that I even got charged $100 for them to run a 30 second test and then told me it would only cost $300 to fix my car. Needless to say, I only paid $300 and passed the Emissions Test, no thanks to this Pep Boys. read more

Whack experience I scheduled an appt for oil change on my Honda Civic hybrid. Upon arrival at appt time clerk told me that my appt was not in computer. I left and called inside from parking lot and was told that my appt was valid after ibeing quoted a price of $43 and told I could use coupon which was a lil pricier than initial phone quote and explaining that vehicle had high mileage my oil change alone came out to over $80. I never agreed to the amount and per pep boys policy there should be no charge over 10% of quoted price even if there would have been additional repairs without customers permission. Do NOT go here! I repeat, DO NOT GO HERE! Nothing but scam artists behind the counter that don't put any quality behind their work, even after they jack up the price ridiculously. Let me share my story... I went in to have my ABS brakes fixed because they kept activating when I came to a complete stop at every light. I had them fixed before, so I knew that it was a bad bearing. I brought it in, and they had to run the diagnostic which is $120. They said that they found nothing wrong, even though it was still happening when I went back to drive my truck. I came back on a day that I had nothing scheduled, so they can have all the time they needed to fix it. They said they had to run another diagnostic (another $120), or else they couldn't work on it. After the diagnostic, they said that the problem was due to a brake fluid leak in my back brakes, and they assured me that I would also have to have more work done on my rear brakes if I wanted the problem solved, which everything in total would be more than $1600. After spending more than $1600, I pick up my truck and hit the road, only to find that the ABS brakes were STILL going off at every stop. I call them and told them, unfortunately I needed my truck for work the next day, so I planned to bring it back the following weekend. However late that night, I noticed that now my radiator was leaking anti-freeze, which is a brand new problem that I never had before I brought it in. So I had to get a spare vehicle loaned to me, and after work the following day, I bring my truck back to Pep Boys. I tell them everything and they keep it for the night. I made sure there was not going to be a charge for my ABS brakes before leaving, considering that's why I came in originally, and the job was not done even after spending $1600. I get a call the following morning, and they said that a bearing needed to be replaced on my ABS (Which I already knew that from last time I got it fixed, and I have a feeling that they knew that too). They tell me that the ABS brakes would have no charge, however the radiator would be $815 to replace. They assured me that they did not mess with it, but it's too suspicious that a radiator starts leaking the day you bring it home from a mechanic. I told them to not touch the radiator and just do the brakes. After they fix the brakes, I take it to another mechanic in Joliet, and he replaced the radiator and hoses for $350. Pep boys charged me MORE THAN $450 OVER what this mechanic did it for. To me, that sounds like since they didn't make any money off of me the 2nd time I brought it back, they totally JACKED up the price on this job to recuperate a little bit. I also didn't mention anything about my prior work on my ABS brakes to the new mechanic. After the work was finished, I take my truck home and I plan on taking it to work the next day. The next morning I get on the high-way, and right when I hit 80mph, my axle blew out, causing shaking, and a loud thumping when I went past 30 mph. I take the next exit, and bring it back to the mechanic that replaced my radiator. He said it looked like when they had to fix the brakes (a second time), they didn't push the wheel back into the axle all the way, and it popped out. So not only did I have to take it back to a mechanic because Pep Boys were too lazy to finish the job properly, but now I had to miss a day of work because of it. I went back to Pep Boys, and asked why did they charge me so much for the radiator when this other mechanic did it for LESS THAN HALF their price, and how do you explain why my axle pops out after they finally fix my ABS breaks. They answered "Our prices are never exactly the same as other mechanics", I said "But your price was $450 more, I can understand it was in the ballpark of the same price, but you completely over-priced this job to recoup some of the money after the 2nd time fixing my brakes", he simply responded with a shrug, and a "I don't know what else to tell you", which is nothing less than what I thought he was going to say. After dealing with the shady business characters at NTB in New Lenox, I thought I'd take my '01 Tacoma to Pep Boys to feel them out and get my brakes done. They turned out to be great and very honest. I know how to repair my truck and brakes, but hate doing brakes so I take it in. I also had them flush the coolant and change the transmission fluid since I have over 100k miles on my truck. They got me in and out pretty quick and on the time scale that they quoted me. I also took my wife's Matrix in there about 8 months later to get her first brake job done since she was roll'n original brakes on her '07 Matrix with 87000 miles on it. I told them to change both front and rear and they said they'd look at the rear to see if it needed it. I came back after 2 hours and they were done with the car. They told me the car didn't need new rear pads so they only did the front... saved me over $150. Now that's honest. They could have just done it and charged me, but they didn't. Just terrible. Had a problem previously, but decided to try them again. Called on Wednesday afternoon and made an appt for a oil change and trans flush the next day at 9am. I said I would need to wait for it and they told me it would take about 1 1/2 hrs. Went to drop drop my car off and was told they didn't have the Toyota trans fluid in stock. Said fine and I would just get the oil changed. They said it would be close to 2hrs before they could start on it. Waste my time...never again! read more

Let me start by saying that I'm a mechanic in New Jersey. I'm in Illinois on vacation, spending time with my son. His car broke down on him right down the road from pep boys. I found that his right front suspension spring had broken, so he limped it in here. I expected for him to be upsold stuff, and was ready to decline the upsells, and just have the spring replaced. I was then surprised to be told that they wouldn't just replace the broken spring, we either had to accept the upsell, or they wouldn't do anything. It was all or nothing... So they just let $400 walk out the door, because we wouldn't spend $800. Great business plan there. read more

I've gone there a handful of times for tires, minor repairs, etc. Recently, I had them change a headlight bulb- a job that should be ridiculously easy. On my car it isn't! A friend and I tried to fix it, but ended up cutting our hands trying to maneuver in a very small work space. The rep/mechanic, named Art, who had the unfortunate task of fixing it also cut his hand up, and a job that should have taken perhaps half an hour took three times that. In the end they got it done. Turns out a small retaining arm had broken which made the repair that much worse to take care of. That said, they were true to their word and didn't try to charge me any more for the service. I'd been pleased enough with their service before to pass a handful of car places on Jefferson to get to their location, I will certainly continue to do so. Well above the rest! read more

After trying for a week to find a decent place to look at my car I came here on a referral from a friend. The service manager, Jimmy, greeted me warmly with a handshake and a smile. I was surprised when he called me 30 minutes earlier than I expected to tell me my car was ready. When I came back in Mike told me that they would order a part and that he would call me as soon as it came in. My car was clean inside and they exceeded my expectations in taking care of me. On our way across the country hauling a horse, a 38 foot trailer, two dogs and a cat we broke down. It was a Sunday of course. I found Pep boys on yelp and called. Jim Smilor, the store manager dropped everything to find a tow truck that would haul us to him. Being outside of the big city of Chicago I figured we were in for a good hosing. Jim and his wonderful staff proved me wrong. Not only were they able to fix the problem (and it was a complex one) but the fix, 3 new injectors and a fuel filter cost less than if the dealer did the repair AND they let us camp in the parking lot while they did the work. Jim and his staff really care about their customers. Even though we were detained I would not have missed meeting these wonderful people for anything. Where ever you are in the Chicago area make the drive to Joliet for your auto repairs. You will be treated fairly and kindly. Thank you Jim and your wonderful staff. You guys a great! read more

I will never take my care to this location again (the store on Jefferson). My first bad experience was when I got an oil change. The employees were very rude and showed no customer service. I called and complained about it and the manager said he would give me a free oil change next time I came in, but was not at all apologetic. I understand that people can sometimes have a bad day and I was willing to chalk it up to this for that employee. A few weeks later I had a service light go on. While I did not want to return, it was the easiest place to get to before a trip. I let them know it had come on before but it just needed a gas cap replaced, but I wanted to make sure nothing else was wrong. The same guy was there (from the oil change) and after a check up, he came out with a list of repairs that needed to be done totaling well over 600 dollars.. Not trusting his word, I left with my car. I searched the internet and found that a new (at the time) Pep Boys opened up right down the road on Larkin (store 1430). I told them the story and they checked the car out. The codes had been cleared on the car and was showing nothing wrong. After a checkup, they found it was the gas cap, changed the cap and I didn't have a problem after that.. I will never go to the store no Jefferson in Joliet again. The other store is friendly and goes above and beyond to make sure they help you out The staff is friendly and very welcoming. I cannot suggest the store on Larking enough to anyone who needs work on their car. read more

Stop in to store to buy fog light bulbs for a Mercedes and saw the sign for 30 minute oil change and asked if they changed oil on that vehicle. Service Manager say yes and convinced me that could do the job. Unfortunately the mechanic wasn't up to the job and complained that changing to oil filter wasn't possible. Another mechanic tried to assist and both were stumped. After 60 minutes the 'master mechanic' was asked to assist and the job was finally done. The Service Manager' was very professional and apologized for the delay. I will make sure to never go there with this car again. 2014 Very cold winter. Our Saturn VUE was not producing any heat! Marcus, Jim (manager) and Jim the technician,where having a hard time with the problem after 2 trips back to Pep boys they nailed the situation. Upon them nailing the situation, they had many obstacles that they didn't have to tell us about. Not only did they do a great job, they where honest about the job! I got a flat tire this morning on the drive to work and believed there was a leak or slash in it. They visually checked it and did a water dunk test for free, and found that someone must have released the valve over night causing it to deflate. They replaced the valve, free of charge, refilled the tire and did the maiintenance to remove the donut tire and replace the correct tire. There is a new manager there, and he's great. He would never recommend additional maintenance unless it's required for what you brought the car in for. Very happy with my service today. I will be back! read more

Deceitful! I arrived at 0800 for a scheduled conventional oil change. The service counter clerk insisted that my 100K+ 2001 Land Rover that I have owned since new required a sixty dollar synthetic oil change! As he was angrily pointing to his computer screen, I invited him out to take a look at the owners manual in my glove box if he doubted my claim that it does not require synthetic oil. He begrudgingly relented then asked what weight of oil I wanted. With that solved I presented my conventional oil change coupon that I printed from the Pep Boys site. The clerk smugly said you cannot use this coupon because my vehicle required two additional quarts. I then offered to pay for the two quarts on top of the coupon price. His reply was no and proceeded to mutter something unintelligible. I then told him to forget it and made my way to the door leaving the worthless coupon and the scam behind.
