As a matter of principle, I do not go to Pep Boys. I should have stuck by my principles because this experience did nothing but confirm my opinion. I had a punctured tire (on the tread of my tire) and (for the sake of speed) I went to get it patched at this location. After waiting, I was told that my tire could not be fixed since the puncture was on the shoulder of the tire (it wasn't). It took another auto shop 10 minutes to fix it FOR FREE (Great job Mavis)! read more

After TWO AND A HALF HOURS I called them and was informed they didn't actually have my tires there. As I was leaving the grocery store, I was alerted to one of my tires being low. I happened to be very near Pep Boys so made a quick decision to pull in there as I feared I wouldn't make it home safely on a very flat tire. One of the mechanics approached me as I got out of the car. He took a look at my tire and saw it was split, not repairable as I had hoped. Thank you, potholes!! Ugh. Very luckily, Pep Boys was able to service my car immediately. They had in stock four of my size/quality tires. I decided to change them all out as I was given a great deal and needed to change both rear tires anyway. 'Natalie,' an area manager, was there that day and worked to get me the best price and warrantee. 'Pablo,' my service mechanic, did an alignment after replacing my tires, and was so kind and helpful. I arrived at 4pm. The location closes at 6pm. They were able to get my service completed and out the door by 5:45pm. Wasn't the way I was expecting my afternoon to go, but the staff there were knowledgeable, helpful, kind...generally very customer friendly. I felt lucky in what could've been a not so fun situation. I feel like management here has changed, before Luis made sure my car was in tip-top condition made sure to inform me of any issues (maybe because he had the same vehicle) but now the team forgets to do things (install my ebrake), keeps my car for multiple days, and just seems kind of incompetent. I had to drop my car off because of an issue that turned out to not materialize so I lost several days where I needed a car. I believe they told me I need new tires which was false so I wasted time researching and finding tires, scheduling time etc. Maybe they just need more time to learn. read more

This is my new go to service place. I was referred to this place by a couple friends who got a lot of work done here & had nothing but good things to say. My first time here I came in because I had a nail in my tire. They told me they would match the price that Wal-Mart had given me of $10. This made me happy because I would much rather go here than Wal-Mart. After about 10 minutes they let me know that the nail didn't go through my tire & wouldn't need patched. They also told me that there would be no charge. I was very surprised not only by the fast service but by how honest they were. Most places would have still tried to charge something. On most of my visits here I have dealt with Tim & he was very friendly & always explains everything in good detail. Overall this place is honest, has good & friendly service & they price match. DO NOT... DO NOT.. DOOOO NOT take your care here!!!! They really dont know what they are doing and do not care. EVERY time you call they will say one or more mechanics did not show up so they are behind. They have ruined a number of my lug nuts which require a special style so the lug is not ruined, they dont care and just use something that kind of fits ruining the original lug nut. They Over torque the lug nuts which warped my rotors. I took off one of my tires this weekend and one of the weights they put on fell off. They lie, they dont know what they are doing and will do anything to get you to pay for things you dont need. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Terrible experience. Made an appointment for an oil change and went to drop it off. No one was there; they simply closed down for the day. Made a new appointment for a few days later. When I went to drop it off alone, they were very rude, took several customers before me when I was in line first and talked down to me. Then they were calling telling me I needed new brakes and tires which I just got done. I went to pickup my car with my husband and their attitude completely changed...now I'm suspicious they even did the oil change since there's no oil change sticker. This shop goes beyond their limits. Ray Lopez (one of the manager) took care of all the services needed for my 05 mitsubishi montero. He's done a great job installing all the suspension components (shocks and springs) and he also gave me a good deal on 4 new cooper tires at a cyber monday event. Ray is an honest and a highly skilled mechanic. My truck was too rusty underneath and i knew it will be a pain in the ass to work on. He only took care of what are only needs to be done on the truck that will keep me safe on the road. Above all He is very reasonable on price and it cost me way lesser than other shops would have charge me way more. Again thanks Ray and im definitely coming back again for my car's future needs. read more

I left Pep Boys today with an oil change and a new battery, (which it did not seem I would need yet-but maybe I did), and a very bad feeling, as they were insisting that my rear brakes be done as well. They had done my front brakes recently. So I hopped down the road to the mechanic I should have gone to in the first place. They recommend waiting on the rear brakes, and are adjusting the front brakes, as they were not installed well, and have no lubricant. It was dumb on my part to go back to Pep Boys today - on the last oil change they screwed up with the electrical system, so I had to bring the car right back so that all these lights saying everything was broken would turn off. Also, they did not reset the mileage for the next oil change, so at around 5000 miles, rather than the usual 3000 miles, I knew something was off. Hope they do better in the future, but I am done. read more

My "check engine" light came on 6/3/22 and I took it in to Pep Boys Palatine the very next day. They told me that they had to order a part (oil pressure sensor/injector) but I was fine to drive it as is. They would call me when the part came in. Nobody ever called me. I called every other week and was told that the part is on "back order" and "supply chain issues." Finally, on 8/1/22, I called in and reminded them that I've been waiting for this part for almost 2 months - the part suddenly came in the next day. I dropped my car off the night off 8/3/22 - they had my car all day 8/4/22. I receive a call on 8/5/22 that my car is fixed and ready for pick-up and they asked for my credit card number to have a bill & everything ready for me to pick up at 5PM. They also suggested I purchase a new battery and tires. I decline to give my credit card number & to additional purchases. I arrive at 5PM, see my car still up on the lift and am told that a few more adjustments need to be made. Finally, at 8PM, I'm told that the part that came in, was the wrong part - they installed it anyway, that they will call me back when the correct part comes in. They gave me the car back, saying that it will run rough but will be fine until the correct part comes in. It definitely ran rough and leaked oil all night in my garage. At least, I paid nothing, however they continued to suggest I needed a new battery and tires. I took my car to another mechanic and started the process all over again. It took 2 days for the new mechanic to get the part in, one day to make the repair (plus I was given a loaner car) and I now have my care back after 1-2 days working fine from another mechanic. Sad to say - after 2 cars and 18 years with this particular Pep Boys location, I will never go back to them again. They still have not called back regarding that new part they had to re-order. They seemed more concerned about selling me tires and a battery, and getting my credit card number, than actually fixing the problem that my car was originally brought in for. I am actually looking into filing additional complaints with the BBB and Pep Boys main office. I do not recommend this shop under current managrment for anything! read more

Very unprofessional. Never will go there again. Went to PepBoys because my BMW's brakes were shaking. Told me I needed new tires and they were 100% sure that it would fix the issue. $1200 later, I drove out and the problem was still there. Called them back to complain, they said that they'd work with me, but the manager was always busy. They even tried to get me to pay to have another $1700 worth of work done, but no assurance that the problem will go away! I have all the docs and records saved up. Am considering taking this to small claims court. Ended up going to another shop who fixed the problem for me. read more

Ok, had a routine inspection done (five hours for brake and suspension INSPECTION) and there was a glitch when putting my pads back on my car. Had to return the following morning to find out that glitch was going to cost me a rear brake job. It was discounted but not comped. The only reason I'd be back is because of the store manager. Some places you leave feeling robbed and neglected, this place i left more feeling only robbed. After all was said and done I did feel like he cared a bit although there might have been more he could have done to make me feel satisfied. There's nothing else really except it just caused me a huge inconvenience and made me late for work. It's a newer shop, small, clean. Easy accessible location. Maybe try your luck here. My teen son who is going to college and works part time at a pizza joint, needed tires for his beater. I am divorced and live out of state but I did the shopping online for him, before I sent him to this place. For these tires, the pricing online said the 4 tires "FULL PRICING WITH INSTALLATION" would be $234.73 (click on screen shot image below). Unfortunately, I wasn't available and he got the tires on his own. First, they didn't give him the discounted tire price. The web site is vague about that ... it says the discount will be applied at "checkout" (online) but doesn't give any hint it might not available at checkout in the store. So they got him for $25.19 there. Then they added $25.20 for a road hazard warranty he neither asked for nor approved nor wanted. And another $7.96 for "misc shop supplies" and $10.00 for "tire user fee." Bottom line, instead of the advertised $234, he was charged $311 before tax. When I bought tires for myself at Discount Tire (Bloomingdale, and their road hazard warranty is free), they matched Tire Rack's online prices. Came in yesterday to see if they had the tires for my truck. They didn't and said they would pick them up today which isn't a problem. We agreed that if I got there by 2pm today they would be able to complete the work on my truck while I waited and I wouldn't have to leave it overnight. After wards it seemed that I was waiting for some time and I was getting a little irritated. They seemed to be over booked and I won't take that out on the employees. I have used PEP BOYS once in the past, and they treated me with respect, kindness and fixed my battery quickly. No hard sell and left with my mind put at ease. I was experiencing a noise under my car and was imagining all kinds of issues. My brakes were squeaking, also (i had been told by another place in town, that i just had to live with the squeak..the brakes were fine). i had them check them with the free brake inspection deal. They were speedy (i had a time issue), fixed the squeak the other said to live with) and reassured me that all was fine. they even noticed i needed an oil change, as i usually go to jiffy lube and took care of that for me. They got me out of there on time, offered me a coupon, and i got out of there for less than the oil change at jiffy lube. Louis and his mgr, Ron and their team are great. We went in for a re-torque for the winter tires. The guy who greeted us professionally looked up the torque required for my particular vehicle and refused to take the tips we offered at the end! Website says the Palatine location opens at nine am. It does not. Sat there for over an hour with windows down and gf's daughter freezing because the work I paid almost 1200 for has already failed. When I picked it up last weekend, after being told it was ready, I arrived to find out they were not sure and still working on it. I contacted them each time that weekend, not one update or anything from management or the store. Impossible to trust, buyer beware, never again. Ernies and the Shell are much better local options. 11.5 hours to mount 4 tires and an alignment. I ordered my tires online and called the day before to verify that they had them in stock. I was told that all 4 were in stock and this should be a 3 hour job. Friday morning 8 am I dropped off car Alex said he would call when the job was done. At Noon I called Alex said due to deliveries and only having 1 tire machine that there has been a delay and my car would be done this afternoon. Around 3 ish I called and Alex said my car would be ready at 4pm. 4:30 I arrived to see my car still in the air. Alex said the issue was he only had 3 of the 4 tires and when he got the 4th tire they delivered the wrong one 2 times. Alex said another tire was on its way from the loop. Basically Alex lied about why my car was delayed. I received a phone call at 7:30 pm saying my car was ready. 11.5 hours later I got my car back. When I asked how they did a 4 wheel alignment with only 3 tires he said they used one of my old tires to do the alignment. Basically Alex lied to me several times and did an alignment that can be considered questionable. I will never return to this place, my advice stay away. read more
