Probably one of the worst experiences we've ever had at a tire store. My fiancé made a 10am appointment, needless to say the car didn't get done until 5pm. No one called to notify us that the car was ready but we expected that as we had issues from the moment we dropped off the car. They arrived with my fiancé upon dropping the car off, the stories consistently changed as he spoke to different people. Then after picking up the car the tires were done incorrectly and the alignment that was supposed to be done is off. We will NEVER return here and please if you need tires go to ETD in butler they're customer service is awesome and we never have issues. We only went here because it was a company account. But man did they disappoint. read more

Before I start, please read all Reviews!!! I wish I did. Scheduled an oil change appt. on-line. First of all, there are no prices online as you are scheduling the appointment. It's broken down into different oil brands/synthetic etc. Also included with the oil change are numerous things including Tire Rotation. Once I got to my appointment and my car was taken, I asked Matt (front desk) if my tires were going to be rotated, he responded with "no", that I should have requested before my car was taken and that they will do that with my next visit. Then once my car was completed and I was ready to pay, I was told my oil change was $66.63 (and that's with a very generous coupon of 15.00 that Matt gave me) I was shocked, how did an oil change cost over 80.00 (without coupon). This morning I called to speak with Matt to advise him how unhappy I was with the pricing and Tire Rotation not even being done. He told me that Honda's take a special synthetic oil and that is why the pricing was high, I then told him that I've always had my oil changes done at the Honda Dealership and they charge my half that amount. I also asked him why that was not explained to me prior to oil change so that at least I would be aware of the price, his response was "you should know what type of oil your car needs and not his responsibility" His demeanor was extremely condescending. I brought my Subaru there for a basic oil change. Shortly afterwards, there was a burnt rubber smell inside and outside the car. Took it to the dealer, as it was under warranty. The culprit was whomever did the last oil change, I was told. They did not replace the seal properly and the oil filter was knocked out of place. If a mechanic is that lazy or that incompetent, he/she should be in another business. Won't return to Manny, Moe or Jack. read more

Simple. I needed to have (5) 35inch tires mounted and balanced. They got it done in about 1 hour. Recommended for the simpler jobs.

I am surprised to see less than stellar reviews for the Pompton Plains store. I was traveling back to Virginia after visiting in northern NJ when I realized one of my tires likely had a leak. I showed up without an appt. asking them to patch my tire. Jason was friendly, professional and courteous. I was in and out of there in an hour, on my way back home with a like new tire. Decided to do online process mainly bc I work night tour and I'm sleeping during day. I stopped in the day of my scheduled service to verify they had my Order. While checking my order status, manager noticed tired weren't in stock and there was a glitch with inventory and computer software. Nonetheless, John found a comparable tire to which I ordered and found one in one of the local shops and had it sent over for my scheduled appointment. The first company I thought about when I could not get an appointment at the Mazda dealer was Pep Boys. I came in for an oil change . I did not realize that my tires were basically done. Dave Peszlen was EXTREMELY HELPFUL. He was very pleasant and went out of his way to ensure that I drove off safely. Very rarely do you meet car repair personnel with such integrity and willingness to go the extra mile for customers. Made an appointment for an oil change here the day before, the clerk had told me it's a 5 appointment, but bring it in 4:30 and we will take care of it. He estimated it would take 45 minutes, however it went quite beyond that. I was in a cranky mood and some time concerns I expressed with the service rep., I believe her name is Paige. She went above and beyond to fix the problem. They are super polite here and really do work with their customers to make it right. I would come here again, hopefully to a slightly more pleasant experience. I will however deduct a 1/2 star (4.5) for work speed; however in their defense it's an incredibly busy location. Asked for a price quote on a tire for my Bmw and I what I thought was a very high price of $265 for 1 new tire. I felt like they were trying to take advantage of me by selling me a way overpriced tire. I went down the road to Firestone wayne and got a new tire for $125 a tire with tax and installed. I had two experiences here. First one was to mount and balance one tire. I was told 45 minutes. I can't back in a hour thirty...they never started and asked which tire. I told the guy, left front. 10 minutes passed he comes out and asks what tire again. Thirty minutes later I was done. Second experience. I went to have another tire mounted and balanced. I arrived and waited 5 minutes at the counter and was never acknowledged. I interrupted David the service manger whom I was standing 3 ft from and looking at and asked how long the wait was to have one tire mounted and he responded......one hour and thirty minutes. These employees need a good manger or owner who knows how to run a business to mentor their staff. Go to etd or sts up in butler. Less trouble and no headache. read more

Today is my birthday, and I can enjoy it because Dave and Micha came to my rescue. Before I drove to New Jersey from Virginia I had my car serviced by another shop whom I will not mention here. One of the services they performed was to rotate my tires. By the time I arrived in NJ, my front end was shaking. I had a client I had to see and spend a few hours with, so when I got back on the road it was early evening. The shaking was getting so bad I slowed down to a crawl and made my way down Routt 23, desperate to find help. I saw the Pep Boys sign and pulled in immediately. Dave heard my story, and even though it was late and he did not have to, he sent Micah out to test my car. All but one of my lug nuts on the driver side front came off in his hands! I also had a very bald tire that I had not been told about and brakes that fell apart in their hands! Someone saved my life that night, and that someone's both Dave and Micah! Sunshine :-) read more

These guys, especially the Manager Dave and his Asst. John were fantastic! I usually do my own repairs, but needed some equipment they have there (radiator flush). I've dealt with several local 'chain' repair places, and I'd Never go back to them. They always try to beat you out of extra $ for things you simply don't need. But these gentlemen didn't even attempt that. I trust Dave to be honest. A rare quality in their business. Went in for an oil change on July 4th 2015 at around 2:15 PM and asked how much it was at the front desk. Guy behind the counter shot me a blank stare and told me he "didn't know" how much it was twice in a row. He eventually quoted me 70 dollars for a synthetic oil change which is stupidly expensive. Do yourself a favor and get your oil changed at a place that actually cares about treating their customers well. read more

Went in this morning to get my battery replaced. I made an appointment last night to go in at 8 AM, and called this morning to see about how long it would take. John the manager told me I could head over early because they were not busy yet. Got there, and he took a quick look at my car, and then was able to get the car right in. He knew I was in a time crunch to get to work on time, and made it work! They also did a quick check of my tires, and noted that my back tire was low. I got a flat tire on Saturday afternoon. Not needing to use this vehicle immediately, I went home and ordered tires from this location online and also an appointment for install on Monday at 4pm. Showed up for my appointment and was not even in the computer for a 4pm appointment. Tires were also not in stock. Douche Manager John said he had to get them from the warehouse and he'd call when they were in. Next day no tires, next day no tires, next day no tires. I called customer service and they couldn't figure out what Douche John the Manager was talking about...there was no need to get tires from the warehouse because 5 stores within 10 miles of each other all had my tires in stock. When you hire high school flunkies that still live with mom + dad, fist-pump, and do Jagerbombs at Applebee's this is what you get. read more

I went specifically for a tire rotation and a oil change. I have an all wheel drive vehicle and the tires have never been rotated. I marked the tires with chalk to make sure the rotation was done, but when I picked up the vehicle, the tires were in the same position. When I went back in and asked for a manager, he said we can do that for you now. I told him they have already lost my trust at this point, I was going to bring my wife's car in the next day but once you lose my trust, you lose my business. I wish I had taken the advise of the reviewer who posted before me. This location is totally unorganized (they have no supervision it seems and have no idea how to schedule their repairs properly) and I have serious doubts about the quality of their mechanics. It took 3 days for my truck to be serviced (check engine light was on) and within 30 minutes of picking up my truck the check engine light came right back on. The truck also seems to be running rougher than when I dropped it off. Is it possible that in addition to not fixing my problem they actually made my truck worse...? The day I picked up my truck there was a lady leaving the office as I was walking in who was telling them she would never be back and that they had lost her business and the rest of her family's as well. Looks like my experience is just par for the course in that shop. In truth I should have known this would happen - the mechanic working on my truck appeared to be totally incapable of interpreting the error code for my engine and settled on doing a plugs and wires tuneup as a last ditch Hail Mary effort to try to make the code go away. Almost $400 and 72 hours of my life wasted for nothing. I would have gladly spent the money if my truck had been fixed, but this is ridiculous. read more

I don't know anything about cars but I do know a thing or two about customer service and this place is the perfect example of what not to be. Staff was lazy and unmotivated. I needed my car to be checked because the check engine light was on. I was barked at by two employees that all I needed was to add some over priced liquid into my gas tank. Sorry? Pretty sure I said I needed my car to be checked. When I insisted that it be looked at I got significant attitude that ended with "fine but it probably won't be ready today". The next employee then proceeded to take my information while telling me stories about his previous car accidents and how I should just total my Saturn so I could be like him. The level of unprofessional-ism was stunning. I should have known better then to leave my car with such hacks. They called me an hour later to tell me "we hooked it up to the computer and nothing happened and the light went out. We told you that would happen". At this point I wanted the experience to be over so I picked my car up, paid the 50 dollars without protest and left only to have the check engine light come on two days later. Needless to say AVOID this location at all costs. Nothing but shitty service by inept morons. Makes me question the entire pep boys brand if they allow certain locations to fall into such ruin. read more

Purchased 4 tires for my son, because prices seemed right with a rebate. First they messed up and duplicate charged us, and then our rebate was declined because we were missing a service necessary to get it. do you think as they handed us the rebate sheet they could have advised us we were missing one service? My daughter was on her way back to college when her car started making noise. She was nervous and afraid and I told her to stop at the nearest auto center. She pulled into PepBoys in Pompton Plains on Route 23 and spoke with the Manager. He calmed her down and they looked at the car. It was a simple fix and they had her back on the road. The manager had called me just to keep me updated on the car. That evening she called and told me that man who helped her was so nice and calming. I give her a lecture about her car all the time but I guess having it come from someone else means more. Thank you Pep Boys for caring so much. read more

My first bad experience with Pep Boys. Car engine was running a little hot. Brought to Pep Boys and new young guy behind counter advised would cost $89 for diagnostic. Left car there. About one hour later he called and said car just needed a coolant top off, wasnt going to charge me. Went to pick up car and still paid diagnostic, so essentially paid $90 for quart of coolant. Normal manager in charge would have just billed me maybe $20 for coolant. But he was off. This was my first bad experience with Pep Boys but I attribute to a young person not using common sense, just charging policy cost. Fine. But my prior experience at this location with John would have resulted in a more fair lesser charge. Now hesitant to go back unless Mgr John at location. read more

The absolute worst. Needed a simple tire charge... ONE tire... And it took FOUR HOURS! They said it would take one hour tops, I told them I had to be at work, they didn't care. I've been to this Pep boys location numerous times now and have had an excellent experience each time. The first time I visted was for new tires to replace the orignal set which came on my car. The factory Pirelli tires which came on my vehicle were listed as ultra high performance summer tires which were both more expensive than I wanted to spend as well as impractical living in Nj which experiences all 4 seasons and weather conditions. Josh the mechanic discussed this with me and helped me to choose a replacement tire which had comparable performance on dry roads as well as far superior wet and cold performance. Since then I have purchased two sets of tires as well as the installation and alignment. Prices were fair and length of time from placing order for tires to installation was as fast as anywhere else. When the A/C compressor on me vehicle went the dealership wanted 900 dollars more for parts and labor than I was charged by Josh at pep boys. Josh also changed the rear struts on my car and was able to beat pricing I found any where else. I am far from a novice in regards to vehicle maintenance and I always shop around for best pricing. The fairness in pricing, speed of service, honest and knowledgeable mechanics, and supurb management have made this my one stop auto care center. read more

Now that I'm a little older and have to travel the worst highway ( RT 23 ) in the country , I made up my mind that it would be better to get new tires 10,000 miles too soon than to break down on #23 at any time. I had gotten a screw in my Michelin and had it plugged locally. i decided since I had close to 38,000 mi. on my car now, ( bought it 2 years ago a 2014 and wasn't sure of the warranty ) that I would call Pep Boys in Pompton Plains. I had used the one in Parsippany years ago. Anyway since they like an Appointment, I made one for that Thursday , ( I'm retired ) at 7:30 a.m. and decided upon an Oil Change as well. I got there , plenty early , and the girl took the info and later they brought the car into the bay,I guess, I didn't see it leave . A while later, maybe an hour, or more , she came out and told me that although she ordered the 4 tires on the day I called and she told me they were there, that someone had sold two of them . Therefore if I wanted I could wait for 1/2 hour or more, for someone to go someplace to get the tires, wait for the tires to be taken off, reinstalled , balanced and so forth. ( They had done the Oil Change. ) I said, " No Way, " I'll be going home in the height of the Rush Hour . So I made an Appt. for Saturday , 2 days later. I went down , a new guy was there, and I had to park way around the building this time , out of sight. So I had no idea when the car was in the bay. I made that Appt. for 8:30 a.m. , time the girl said was open and no problem and so I waited. Well I didn't get out of there until 10:59 a.m. Guy feeds me the line that's normal time like I just got off the boat. Remember , this is with an Appointment and like your dentist they overbooked and they ain't fooling me. Anyway , I paid up , got out of there and went home. I was so mad, the tires could have been off the rims,and I wouldn't have known or checked anything . Later , I checked to try to see how much air to put in these tires when I needed to , but couldn't find anything. But I did find scratches all over my rims. I'm no mechanic , but I do know that the Machine they used to dismount the tires should be one that operates from the inside out , so as not to scratch your Rims. I checked and I hope they weren't bent, they don't feel like they are because if so, I'd have a heckuva time trying to prove to them that they did it. So, not figuring the gas I used to go and come from there twice when it should have been only once , I spent 5 hours all told just to get 4 tires, balanced and an oil change. If my old Mechanic had done it all by himself , I'd have been in his garage less than 1 1/2 hours . All by himself. But he didn't have the kind of Tires I wanted this time. So much for Pep Boys demanding an Appointment . If the time was open as the girl said the second time , how come the bays were all full when I got there , how come 8 or more cars were parked outside ( this place ain't that big ) and how come two guys were waiting when I came in ? This is the first time reviewing a business. This company lied to us and even charged us for work that wasn't done. Brought in for heat wasn't working and manager claimed when we picked it up it was blowing hot air the night before. Well it never blew anything but cold air on the way home. Called and complained that it didn't get fixed . After some back and forth and wanting them to actually fix it we decided to take it elsewhere to have it fixed. Received credit for parts they charged us. The pump was bad so nothing could of blown hot air like they claimed it was doing since the pump was bad and our new place replaced it and now the car is warm. Will never return to this business for they weren't honest and lied to us on a couple occasions. I fell we should of been refunded the labor as well for they didn't do the work they said they did. Run away from this place. Find a local mechanic instead. read more

have had many cars at this companies locations over the years especially with 2 teenage drivers and have always found the experience ok. my car needed a full set of tires, i ordered on line, made the appointment and had them installed without incident. as i pulled out and made the jug handle the TPMS light came on. the following day i returned and they put it back up and checked and said that the sensor on one of the tires would need replacing. they ordered the part and i was told i would be contacted. 2 weeks no call, i called to a totally new MGR Dave Peszlen. he asked that i bring it in and let them look at itwhich i did. now it was 3 sensors. he said they would order them and replace them all. they did just that but again the TPMS. called and told again to bring it back which i did. they tried everything to recity the issue to the point they exhausted everything and then made arrangements for a specialist to come in from out of state and he worked on it at a later date but to no avail. he did say that the issue may be with the type of sensor that there are 2 and that they would order the second. they did and arranged for me to come in today they replaced them and i now have no issues. many reading this would wonder why would you go back and not just go somewhere eles after all those visits. simply for the way i was treated and their continued effort to correct the issue. Dave was thrown into the middle of this during a management change over where the ball was dropped and he and his entire staff did all they could. rather than have me wait today he gave me his own personal car to go to work. what can i say?!! during my many visits there i could see that the treatment i recieved wasnt a random occurance.i saw the same for all that entered the establishment. the techs that i encounteed were some of the most conscientious i have seen and took pride in their work and in interacting with customers were they perfect no. did they make it right, absolutely. i'll be back! read more
