I have recently gone here a few weeks ago and had the worst experience. My check engine light was on and my car was hesitating at low speeds so I was informed the service dept. They informed that the ignition coils needed to be changed and a few belts had to be changed, but the Asst Mgr Frank mis to informed that they sell the coils for $25.99 and charged me $63.99. The second issue was they charged me for 6hrs of labor but I live in the area and passed by numerous times and my vehicle went in at 12 and I picked it up at 330. I was charged wrong for material plus labor over a $500.00 mistake . This place misinformed me tremendously, they not only ripped me off but try to charge me for service that was not done. I highly do not recommend this place, it was one of the worst experiences I have been through. read more

I went Saturday to inquire on new tires, there was an offer for tires, buy 3 get one free. The sales person who assisted us was Maurice. He was very knowledgeable and honest on the timing it would take to get them done and suggested we come back Sunday morning. We made an appointment for 9am. Maurice did the paper work and gave it to us. He advised to come in the next morning and hand the sales person the paper work so there is no wait time. I arrived to pep boys and already there were 5 people in font of me. I was greeted by Jimmy who was very sweet and helpful. He kept me informed on the status of my car at all times. My car needed a little bit more than tires and this kept me there until 12:30pm! It was work my car needed so I could not complain. Once I got my car Michael the technical mechanic apologized for the delay and answered all of my questions which was helpful because I have to admit, when a woman goes into a male dominant business they tend to try to rip women off but not here they were all honest and even said "you can go price this elsewhere if you like" which is odd but i appreciated it. The only down fall is the wait time to get the paper work done. There should be more than 2 people at the area assisting customers and it should be more automated where there is no need for paper work. It would be ideal to have each work station in the mechanic area to have a computer monitor where everything is processed by a click of a button once things are entered at the front this should move things quickly. Also the waiting area should be bigger and more comfortable to accommodate those who have more than an hour to wait. Worst place. They rip you off and have one agenda- take your money. I shouldn't be surprised by a place like this that works on commission. Went for a car inspection. Two weeks ago and I'm still waiting for the sticker. I understand that I got a new battery and the electronic computer system of the car had to reset. However 300 miles of driving my car and I'm still waiting for their computers. One moron mechanic with grey hair says " drive to Ammityville Long Island then check back." I travelled to NYC and unfortunately I ran into a problem with my rear brake calipers. Went here as I needed to go home tonight. Them seeing the desperation happily charged me $600 in bad work. They didn't properly remove the calipers so the master cylinder just malfunctioned. Now they want another $335 to replace there mistake. They of course are not admitting fault, stating "hey this stuff happens". I specifically told them to make sure they properly install the calipers otherwise the master cylinder will fail. I swear I will never do business with pep boys again. It is a complete waste of $. And pepboys don't send some automated response after you stole $1000 from me. read more

Here is my assessment of Pep Boys in Ridgewood, in short STAY AWAY! I am keeping my 16 year old car alive by driving it not much and gently. Still cars need maintenance and attention, so I have been going to PB at different times over the last few years. If you need something like an oil change, wipers, parts and you know exactly what you need, you could try them if you get there early enough. I had been treated courteously but still the overall vibe isn't quite right. What they really did to piss me off was too charge me for a wheel alignment, and then I drive the car and it pulls to the right EXACTLY as before. I came back and complained and then they did it right (but this was a long ordeal). This last time I told them I thought I had minor hesitation and both the check engine and ABS lights on and that I MIGHT need a tune up. What I really needed was a diagnosis of these problems, but the (sourpuss guy that has been there for many years) just added up a bunch of 'tune up' services that somehow totaled to $450! Things like plugs and ignition wires (that I know for a fact are not the source of the problem. Walked out and never coming back. Pulled $400 in cash for the ATM, went to Willets Point and my problems were (mostly) solved with enough change left over for some food and hardware shopping. Pep boys is a large chain operation and they attract new suckers all the time who can be kept happy as long as their needs are simple and cut and dried. But anything requiring patience, thought, skill - go elsewhere. read more

THIS PLACE IS A JOKE!! Went in to get an oil change. I asked how long at the lady at the front desk. She said there were 2 cars ahead of me, so about an hour before they can work on my car. I said fine. Two and a half hours later, my car hasn't moved an inch from where I parked it. I asked the front desk and she said that she was sorry and she could give me my car key back. Went there to check on my engine rattle sound.. I also asked to check on the status of the breaks which were fine to begin with but since im there a good visual wont hurt. The guy comes back stating I have a cracked valve cover gasket thats leaking and that is the reason why my car rattles. I need new brake pads and rotors and I need new tires along with other things. 1500 dollar total.. they were like this needs to be done ASAP. I laughed and said take down my car... I went to another mechanic place a few miles down and the guy laughed when I told him what Pep boys said. My brake pads and rotors were fine, my tires were in great shape and the valve covered gasket is not the problem and its not even cracked. The problem was the engine mounts were worn out causing the engine to rattle. Problem solved! Dont waste your time with these franchise spots, there job is to make money to please the share holders. They will make stuff up to increase revenue. You go in for a tune up, youll come out with a 2,000 dollar bill. Never again will I step foot in Pep Boys!!! read more

Went in for a tire rotation. They ended up trying to trick me into buying new brakes for my car back in 8/2011. The manager/supervisor told me the pads were really thin. Which is impossible. First of all my car was practically new (1 year old) with only 10,000 miles on it. They said it would cost around $300-500 for new brakes. I declined their services. Within the next 2 years and several other 2nd opinions along with NYS DMV inspections and they all said my brakes were fine with plenty of padding left. Go figure. read more

I've been here 2X and checked on the form and asked "can you do a general check up and let me know if there are any issues?" or ever how they word it, and both times they didn't. They only do what you tell them to do. That is really unhelpful for people who don't know much about cars. I can't raise my car up in the street in Queens to look under the car for issues - I am not a mechanic. YOU are supposed to be the expert - my profession and expertise lie elsewhere. But the larger reason for the low rating is this - I got an oil change here barely 3000 miles ago, 99% sure that it's been less, because I don't drive much at all and that was only 4 months ago. Anyways, there is definitely no leak but I am already almost completely out of oil. Where did it go? This was the first time I've EVER had this happen, can't help but see a connection between this incident and the fact that I had my 1st oil change at Pepboys, and as a result, my crankshaft sensor broke, which cost WAY more than any $ I saved with Pepboys' cheap oil changes. I obviously don't think their was any malintent, but I do think that the people there aren't knowledgeable enough about cars, from my two experiences...........they need a senior mechanic to oversee things there read more

Love this place. These guys saved me and restored my faith in humanity. After someone backed into my car and lied on the insurance report I was left to pay for all the damages to my vehicle out of pocket. To make matters worse I found out I had a flat tire The next day. Today he organized their first car show and everything was top notch. The web site does not indicate exactly where to approach and who to contact in the store. I came at the appointed time, found where to go, stood in line for a single person for about five minutes. Then my turn came. Incredibly slow man behind the desk drove the whole five minutes into the computer about tire replacement and wheel balancing. Then he showed me the price, and it cost me $ 135, while on any other small service for it is the usual price of $ 80. Well, I agreed because I thought that maybe they would do better here. In addition, their price is listed in small points and I did not notice that it included in addition four rubber valve stem that I did not request. I asked how long it would take to replace the tires and balance it. He said about an hour. Although the real is not fast work here for half an hour maximum. I said I would come then in an hour. The clerk said ok. I came in an hour, of course, nothing was done, although there were not really any other cars. Their workers are just lazy and not in a hurry, but crawling. I had to stand another 25 minutes. Finally they did their job. Five more! minutes from the clerk, then a couple of minutes from the other. and finally i got my car back. They did not do very neatly - new tires became dirty from sealing on the sides and stained. In addition, the next morning I discovered that they had lost one cap from the valve stem. After work I had to come to Pep Boys and pick it up. The points: 1. Very expensive 2. Very slowly 3. Their employees do not meet deadlines 4. Untidy work 5. Lose parts 6. Include Unsolicited Parts in the Price 7. On the computer screen that shows their clerk can not immediately disassemble, for which the price and from which it is folded. I came here because my car was having trouble starting. They told me it was battery so they changed the battery. Next time I go to start the car; same problem. They never even bothered to do a diagnostic test, mind you I already paid for a $170 for a battery and installation. Now they do a diagnostic and they tell me I have to change 3 sensors. $440 in parts $406 labor and $47 other, whatever that is for a total of $973. Being very wary I took my keys and left. I went straight to my local who tells me it's only the camshaft sensor. He tells me the part is $120 for him to get the part today or I can oreder one online for $20. So I order one online for $20 and he charged $20 to change it, which took all of 2 minutes. FUUUUUCK THESE INCOMPETENT CROOKS. Instead of paying the $973 I paid $40 from my local mechanic but I still got overcharged for a battery that I didn't need and now looking at these reviews, apparently the batteries this places uses are shit and not installed right half the time. read more

Dishonest ...I would never step into a Pepboys for service but was in a jam cause my battery died and had it jumped so I could get to a place near my house. I went in for a car battery with free install per advertised, when I got the receipt it had a $9.99 charge on it for battery labor. I asked the mgr what is this charge and he said it's for all battery work. I asked him the install is free, so why the charge?, he mumbled something and I asked him what does this service include.."it includes cleaning battery post and cables on new battery(god knows why a new battery needs a cleaning for new post) and felt pads". Well, when I asked the service guy to pop the hood after the install to see the work...guess what, no felt pads!!. I went in and told the mgr and he said the guy must have forgotten to put them on....really I said, you told me this is done for every battery swap, shouldn't your service guys know that this was mandatory. After realizing he was caught trying to stiff me, he went back and put the pads on with me watching him to ensure it's done. I demanded he take the 9.99 off my bill, which he did, cause he knew he was dead wrong. Just another scam to rip off customers. I'm really disappointed in this place. Gave this place 5 stars last time but now I dont think I'll be back. I went in on a Thursday because my breaks were making a weird sound. I went in around 5 and didnt leave until almost 8... they didnt have the right part so they put the front breaks on but not then rotors ( Idk if I'm even spelling that correctly, my bad!) The gentleman said he's going to order it and get back to me in the morning.. fast forward to the following week on a Tuesday.. I received no call so I called and they said oh um we tried ordering it but the wrong size kept coming in... wtf?! Dont you specialize in cars?? Are you ordering the wrong thing?? So Tuesday evening the guy calls me and was like we got the parts do you want to come in. .. it was like 6 something I said no and I'll be there in the morning . Wednesday morning ( almost a week later) I dropped my car off at 7:56am the guy said you car will be ready in 45 minutes to an hour. I thought great, I'm gonna go workout and walk my dog and that will give plenty of time. Especially since it was pretty empty when I was there. I called around 11 because no one contacted me about my car. The guy said oh we had the wrong parts again so we had to order the right thing... at this point I'm like seriously?!?!?! My car was done after 1pm. This was ridiculous because I ended up late to a dental appointment. Then the price was so expensive. They ended up taking off a little but of money but it wasn't a lot at all especially because the week before I spent over $150 just for then to do a half ass job and not do the breaks and only put 1 part in... and now 65p something this time ... this place will no longer get my services. read more

You treated me like I was the only PerSon in the store and went above and beyond what I've experienced in the past. my car remote clasp broke ( yes its traumatic when it can't attach to the key chain) and he found a replacement (my car is old) and my crappy , my windshield wipers needed to be replaced and he put them on for me. I know that may not mean that much for most of you, but it did to me. I didn't ask for him to do it, he just did. And no, I'm not young and pretty. He just did the right thing for a customer. I went to Pep boys at the metropolitan location to get a wheel alignment on a 2000 Nissan pathfinder which cost me about 90 dollars. I rarely drive my car so after two to three weeks I notice my steering is getting looser and looser so I go back by the 4th week and ask if they can check whats going on with the steering because I did not experience any issue with my steering up until after Pepboys performed an alignment. So the manager tells me its been a month we cant do anything for you, your car is to old for an alignment and we would not do an alignment on the car. you need to get the entire steering fixed which will cost you 2000.00 So now my car is to old for you to do an alignment and yet you still had one of your guys do it. that does not make any sense and I feel that they were trying to rip me off completely. I was so disappointed with the way they tried "working with me by ripping me off" So I go to my regular mechanic he checks my steering and told me that the rubber pieces that make sure the movement in the steering is sturdy were literally almost gone he told me that if I would have driven like this for a few more days I would have gotten in to a major accident cause I would have lost steering. how much did that cost me you say. 140.00 now my steering is back to normal and I can actually drive my car without any issues or steering problems. I have to give pep boys less than one star cause if you tell me that you dont do alignments to cars that old why the hell would you do it in the first place charge me for it then try to get me to spend two thousand dollars. So you guys get negative 20 stars and I would never in my life ever go, purchase or even go near pepboys after that experience. Knowing that you care more about the money than the actual customer is really bad practice on your part Metropolitan ave Pep boys. I suggest any time they give you a quote on your car take it to a real mechanic that will give you an actual quote on whats really wrong with the car. read more

Took my 06 bmw there to have a diagnostic done the mechanic tightened the maf sensor and sent me on my way for $100 the code came back now they say I needed a air intake boot $75 plus $140 . Labor send me on my way code came back again now they kept the car for 4 days no update I call to see what's going on they say they cant fix it I need to take it to the dealer for a simple air leak any qualified mechanic can narrow down with an evap smoke machine and some tests. I also had a hood cable installed that cost me over $266 in labor alone! read more

I've used this location since I moved to Ridgewood 3 years ago and never had a problem. Went there this weekend to get my car fixed and was treated horribly. The worst customer service possible and the manager literally ran away when he saw me coming to the desk. They left my car there for an entire day without doing anything to it, never even apologized one time. Was also put on hold for 30 minutes while they "checked the status of my car", and when I arrived, there were 4 people behind the desk doing nothing. Absolutely Ridiculous. read more

It's a shame that I am even on here writing a bad review right now. I would travel all the way from upper Manhattan just to this specific pep boys because I liked the customer service and their diligent mechanics. HOWEVER, I am no longer feeling this way about this location or pep boys for that matter. In July I had made an appointment for my brakes (which were squeaking), they said my car would need new brake pads and rotors. I authorized the work to be done to my car. Got it back after 3 hours and the car felt and sounded great! Fast forward a week in time, the brakes start squeaking again.. well that's frustrating.. but I remember that the man told me I had warranty for the brakes so I could come back if any problem should arise. So I came back. They said it was most likely a factory defect with the brake pad but it would be no issue to replace. They had me and my husband waiting 2 hours and then told us they had to keep it overnight.. OK! so we did. we got it back, few days after its squeaking. I go back. They "fix" it again. I leave, a few weeks after its squeaking AGAIN now its September 3. I made an appointment this time for 11:30AM, I get there early and they DO NOT honor my appointment time. I ask to speak to the manager because of course I am fuming after my FOURTH visit to pep boys for the SAME issue. The cashier with red hair gives me a whole bunch of attitude and says "the manager is a busy man!" insinuating that his time has more value over mine. I continue to keep my cool as she rolls her eyes and leaves to get him. The manager, Shaun, comes and basically give me the runaround and tells me I would need to leave the car overnight but that he would be the one to work on the car this time. I leave pep boys because at this point I feel aggravated. I call him up and schedule for my car to be put overnight AGAIN! I pick it up the next day, this time I ask the Shaun why is it that this problem continues to reoccur, he doesn't give me a clear cut answer. Then I ask if there is anything I can do to prevent the issue because I am tired of having to return here especially when the team members working there are giving me sass, he literally tells me "it happens". I ask for my receipt and leave because I could no longer bare this conversation. This guys seems to lack the knowledge necessary for the job at hand nor does he seem to give a damn about the concerns of the customer. So I found me a new mechanic in Brooklyn. That will be the last time I give pep boys my business. A huge waste of my time and money! read more

Thanks to Petter & the team at this location for their wonderful service. I was able to get in and get out after the winter storm pot holes cause my tire to blow out. They recommend to change both back tires and they did with quick friendly service. They even checked for little minor car issues, informed me and fixed them.
