I honestly don't understand the love this place gets. To start out, this place does not accept debit or credit cards. Yep...heaven forbid they accept a form of payment that has been accepted by virtually every other merchant for decades. I'm sure it's not because they cheat on their taxes, is it? As other reviewers have mentioned, the owner (and only worker?) of this establishment prides himself on being a grumpy German. There's even a sign on the wall proclaiming this "achievement". I guess a lot of people think this is charming and/or entertaining....kind like that character (the soup Nazi) from the old Seinfeld TV show. Well, I've lived in NY most of my life, and I can tell you truthfully that such an attitude would not be welcomed that city. The people there simply don't put up with unnecessary BS. If this owner were in NY he would have lost all his customers (and business) many years ago. Nonetheless, if you do dare to venture into this restaurant, order carefully. If you don't ask for the exact product you'll be met with a huffy attitude and disdain by the owner. The same is true when your order is ready. You'll be handed your sausage, without anything else, on a plain bun. You are then expected to know that you must cross the room and quickly add some of your desired toppings from a small bar...and be quick or you'll again hear his wrath. You then return the sausage to the owner and he'll list off the remaining choices of toppings that he will personally put on. At this point DO NOT say "Everything please." This will totally piss off the owner. Apparently you can have all the toppings, but you must say them all individually. If you make it to this part of your Gestapo culinary adventure you may thankfully, after paying in cash (and by the grace of God), leave. I must admit, the sausages are quite good, and for that reason I'll give the place 2 stars. But the owner is a first class ass-hat, thus putting the Pepper Tree on my "Never again" list. read more

Ron Swanson would love this place. That's all that needs to be said really. It's small, cash-only, and the owner has a reputation for being a grumpy German (or a sour Kraut -- wakka wakka -- no but seriously this joke is framed on the wall). All the meat and sausages are cut and made in back, and they're damn good. There's a little shelf with some random games and a small library of books such as "How to Fix Anything" and a cookbook devoted entirely to eggs and cheese. And the menu is pretty much devoted to meats and breakfast foods. If anything on the menu is vegan or gluten-free, I would bet it's only so by accident. read more

Ever since I've left Chicago I have been looking for good Chicago Italian sausage. I have finally found it here in Albany Oregon. The sandwich I had was just as good as those that i have in the south and west side of the city of Chicago.... I look forward to going back and having another one. read more

This is a small business owner who really shows what it takes to be able to do what you love. Although this may just be a small hole in the wall, this place makes great food! All handmade meats and just overall really tasty. I have heard bad things about the owner being rude and not nice. But you really have to understand how to read people and just know that some people are not being rude it's just who they are. The owner Michael is witty and has a sense of humor. Sorry if that offends you, but it shouldn't. He's funny and his food is amazing. We shared the steak & eggs and pork chop & eggs. Most tender steak I've ever had at a breakfast restaurant and smoked pork chop is the single best pork chop I've had in my life. Based on the reviews, here, we had to try this place out. It's tiny! One table and a short line of chairs at a "bar" around the outside. And it's busy. When we visited (Friday afternoon), the easy to identify from the descriptions here owner was at the grill, and a very friendly, jovial man was at the counter taking orders. The menu is a surprise. It's huge! We chatted a bit and finally settled on a Chicago Italian with marinara and cheese. The man at the counter said that was his favorite (I bet he tells that to all the customers), and there was a quick flurry of activity to identify if indeed they had marinara, as they often run out. They did. Whew. Ok let's cut to the chase: damn that was good. The sausage had great flavor, and perfect texture, moisture and a light spicing. And our experience was that the Cranky Weiner Man may give you some shit, but it's more like a bit of attitude with a wink on the side. Play along with him and the smile you get is genuine. Not only excellent quality, but healthy too. He uses locally sourced pork, no fillers AT ALL, and no preservatives. The bacon has minimal nitrates and is the best I've had in my life. Not to mention that he is an artist with flavors. I don't even know what to recommend- every single item I have gotten there (and I buy 2 packs of sausage and a pack of bacon nearly every week) has been amazing. Cannot recommend highly enough. I agree with all of these reviews! I used to not want to go there cuz I thought it was just a "Hole in the wall". But, my husband kept telling me how wonderful it is; he goes there for lunch and calls in and it's ready for him on his way to work. So, I finally decided to go with him before work one day. I hate to say this [again] but my he was right. Love the Sausage Natzi, the owner, and the breakfast burritos are delicious, hearty and affordable for what you get. I haven't been able to get in there and try other sausage items on the menu because I work in Corvallis, but maybe I will stop by and pick something up to warm up at the office later in the day. Since he's the only one that works there and needs to take a couple days off during the week, he is closed Sundays and Mondays. I really wish he was open on Sundays because after a Saturday night I really crave his yummy food. He does close in the afternoon so get there early. If anything, five stars is underselling the place. Two words: Home Made Yeah, a hot dog stand that has home made sausages. Think about that for a minute. No lips or rat parts and whatever else your latest documentary has you scared of in processed foods from huge plants. Just the best stuff, and believe me, this is the best stuff on a bun. Last summer I was introduced Pepper Tree and I can honestly tell you it was the best decision I made when it comes to Albany cuisine! Every time I order the Hot Combo with extra cheese. Delish. My favorite Chipotle Tabasco is always sitting among the other sauces, Mike "the Cranky Wiener Man" is the bomb, and the food- in the words of Nacho Libre: "IT'S THE BEST!" It sucks because the shop is closed on Sundays and Mondays-usually when I'm in town...Stop in if you've had a long night, fiendin' for some sausage or just looking for a quick breakfast. Admittedly, my experience with the Pepper Tree is fairly limited. During finals week my friend decided that, between classes, he really wanted to go to the Pepper Tree. So I went with him. We got breakfast burritos and they were fantastic, and not exorbitantly priced either. If I could ever wake up early enough to get in before they closed (which seems to be, to me, most of the time), I would eat here more often. I have not tried any of their actual sausages yet, but I would certainly like to. They also had a wide range of Tabasco sauces if I recall, which my friend was in love with. After living here for 2 years, finally made it to Pepper Tree, and I'm definitely not waiting 2 years to go back again! The staff could not have been nicer and the sausage was fantastic! They have tons of sausage options and I can't wait to go back and try more of them. I also purchased a couple of the steak pinwheels (wrapped with bacon), which were seasoned perfectly and at least as delicious as the sausages. Service and food definitely earned 5 stars, but I dropped a star due to not accepting credit cards. Along with an awful lot of people now, I don't carry cash, and having to go to an ATM just to pay for lunch is an inconvenience. I really see no excuse to not accept credit cards at this point, with so many easy options out there for businesses. I often just walk out of a place when I find out they don't take cards, and almost did here. But, despite my annoyance with the policy, the rest was good enough that I'll be back. read more

Wow! The smallest, coolest restaurant I have ever eaten at. 10 chairs and only one table. A case full of homemade sausages and bacon fills the small space. The smell is incredible.
