...our personal "coveted" home Fortaleza stash, with the Winter Blend still sealed ... hmmmmm
    Scott P.

************ I feel fortunate this idyllic establishment is still in business. I don't mind their idyosyncratic hours of operation ... fly by the pants ... see how we feel about being open or closed. They've earned trust by being honest, kind, humble and respectful of their guests. The owner was kind enough to allow my Corrales friends and I a chance to savor a taste of Fortaleza Winter blend. Ooogly Googly we all got ... OMGEE :) We asked if we could buy a bottle, he only had 5 total and sold us two of them (without marking them up) for $90 each. Today I see some shops requesting prices of $330 - $400ea. Regardless ... we had so much fun trying to predict who would open their bottle first, so we could visit their house and sample it :)) I am determined to show up here on a rented Mule/Burrow/Donkey like transport, and tie up out front to the hitching post. This will be the right way to enter and the proper way to exit this historic and wonderful establishment. We are lucky to experience this wonderful gem of a place in beautiful ABQ ... and I hear they sometimes open at 10am ... so Hannah and Nates for Breakfast, then walk nearby to rent a form of animal transport identified above ... then waddle, clop or other to the bar at 10am. Terribly unprofessional and undignified but a hellofalotata fun and perhaps a (blackmail?) photo or two. No photos today - you know what's in store for you if you visit. It's not about getting smashed, it's about absorbing the rich history with dignity, and respect ... and geez, truly appreciating this quirky genuine little town.

Loved this place from the moment we walked in!!! Outstanding service and food!!! I had not been there for close to 30 years!!! It holds the same "magic" Kudos to the Pereas for keeping the traditions Impressive bar!!! Very well stocked with not only the regular choices but many unique options! We had a birthday party of 20 and still had outstanding service!!! Lots of beautiful rooms/ choices to ea I can't wait to go back!!!

A must place to eat in Corrales...the best true New Mexican homemade cuisine in the ABQ metro area. The stuff sopapilla is amazing...with green or red, it's all good! And of course, the Huevos rancheros is a staple. Don't forget to ask for the garnish (lettuce & tomatoes) to round out your selection...and what the hay, add the onions & sour cream too! All entries are served with sopapillas or homage tortilla (both are fantastic). A local favorite for generations. The owner, John is inviting and personal. John knows all there is to know about beer, wine, and libations galore. And the staff are a hoot!

Been trying to get here for awhile now and finally came when they were open. We didn't get there in time to eat but did hang out in the bar and had some really good drinks. Service was friendly and prompt. We did have chips and salsa and they were delicious. Love the history of Perea's and would definitely come back!

John Perea, owner of Perea's Tijuana Bar, is the ultimate bar-owner gentleman who'd be cast in a movie set in the classic 1950's. He knows every customer's name and drink order by heart; knows the recent medical scare the older man at the corner bar stool had 2 days ago, and would welcome 1st-timers to his establishment with an on-the-house bottle of limited-edition Marble brew, if after some conversation he discovered that's your beverage of choice We were meandering through our little Village on a windy bike and wine tour when we last-minute decided to ride by Perea's to see if the "gates were open". To our great fortune, they were! (Note to the wise: the posted hours are a suggestion, definitely open at those times, but John, the gentleman, will stay open for the local peeps to continue their conversations and libations into the evening hours...) We were welcomed to a beautiful adobe building with heaters a-roaring and a bar top slightly too tall for our stools (just the way we like it) and the kindest staff you could find, very proud of their boss, Mr. John Perea. We all ordered frito pies, sopapillas, and tortillas (all homemade from scratch, as well as one green chile cheeseburger, because, well, why not? I felt like I was in someone's home, cared for, and cared about. You don't get this very often anymore in restaurant/bars. I was one proud Corraleña. Let me tell you. We were always checked on, taken care of, and our food was home cooked comfort at its finest. We cannot wait to go back! Look for the open gates!

Food: 4.5 We tried a variety of dishes that were all delicious. They had good balance of flavor and texture and do have a slight kick to them. Our favorites include the pork belly, aguacate frito, manchego frito, berenjenas, and gambas. Other dishes that we have tried include patatas bravas, shrimp ceviche, scallops, green chile chicken empanada, paella, lamb chops, and la mula (ribeye). The desserts that we tried were all delicious. Our favorites were the cheesecake empanada and crema catalan. Some of the dishes are a little expensive for the size and quality. For example, the scallops were tasty but unevenly sized with ones that appeared to be in a different size classes from others. Service: 3 I hate to take away points for service as our server was so kind and patient with our large group. Some dishes took very long to come out. They also appeared a little disorganized and some of our dishes/drinks were forgotten until they were reminded. To be fair though, we had a large group and ordered several times throughout the course of our meal which could have led to this confusion by the kitchen. Ambiance: 5 Mulas is a beautiful restaurant. I like how it feels very bright, airy, and open. There is also a nice outdoor seating area with live music. This would be the perfect place for a date night or drinks/tapas with friends.

I went to brunch on Sunday with a couple friends. It was my first time there, but my friends go…read moresomewhat often and they told me that Mula's must have been having an off day because they always have a better experience than we did. We were seated outside directly in front of the live performer's soundbar. It was nearly impossible to hear each other. There was a large birthday party behind us which made it even harder to hear. We asked to sit inside but were told there weren't enough servers. We ordered mimosas and were told there was no Prosecco. The server didn't offer any other options or alternatives. She was gone for a long time before coming back to take our food order. Two of us ordered carne asada tacos and were told there was no carne asada. I opted for the shrimp tacos, but my friend wanted chicken tacos and asked if it was breast meat or meat off the bone. The server didn't know. She didn't offer to find out. After a few seconds of awkward silence I asked her if she could ask the kitchen about the meat. She said yes and then came back to tell us it was white meat. Perfect. After placing our order, it took a while for the food to come. The live music was nice, but it was a bit too loud and we loved when the artist took a break. When the food arrived, I was surprised by the small portion sizes. I asked for a side of limes and my friend asked for lemon for her water. We got a whole lime sliced, but no lemon. The server eventually brought the lemon and said she couldn't hear the request over the music. It took a long time to get the check. We weren't offered dessert menus which was disappointing, but by that time we were ready to get away from the party people who had sung happy birthday twice and the performer had also sung happy birthday a couple times. It was a lot. The food was good. The outdoor space was nice. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back though. They need to work on their pricing. $19 for three tacos with no sides is insane. I live in DC and unless you order tacos à la carte, the plates come with rice and beans. And even then, an à la carte taco is like $4-5. The shrimp tacos were good, but $15-16 would be a more reasonable price with no sides. I actually left hungry and ended up grabbing a bite to eat on my way home.

The tacos and overall atmosphere definitely deserve 5 stars. That said, I do miss the old salsa bar setup where you could enjoy as many salsas as you wanted for free. Even with that change, the quality of the food and the experience keep me coming back.

The property just looks very culturally historic. Reminded me of my time in Mexico. As you walk in , there is a counter on the left to order your food. They offer fountain drinks as well as cold bottled beers. There is a salsa bar with maybe 10 salsas to try. I asked for recommendations, and was advised to try the taco 4 pack 2 pairs of meats of my choice. I got the carnitas and the barbacoa, with a side of rice and beans and chips , plus a fountain drink. The carnitas were absolutely fantastic. Tender, crispy and seasoned well. The barbacoa was juicy and tender as well. The chips were crispy but maybe not home made? Didn't matter, as the tacos were clearly the star. The beans were cheesy and the rice had carrots and peas and onions, and maybe corn. You get free refills on the fountain drinks. Mexican music played over the speakers and it was nice with it on or off. I feel like I found a gem. I didn't check the prices because it wouldn't have changed my mind. I later learned it was $31 for 4 street tacos, beans, rice, chips, and a fountain drink. Will I pay it again ? Gladly.
