I have been looking for someone new after working with my previous hairstylist for 20 years. I looked around and saw a number of good yelp reviews for Perfect Gentleman, so I gave it a shot. When I arrived the staff was taking a group photo - and they all seemed genuinely happy and like they truly cared for each other. That was huge. Just to see them smile and have fun - and their vibe radiated throughout the shop. Reyna was available and what a wonderful surprise. She was kind and helpful and provided a great haircut. 3 star haircut but 1 star hair products. I called to set up an appointment. When speaking with a lady on the phone I specifically asked if there was someone there who could cut black hair, I get a fade to skin on the sides and short top along with a lineup. The lady in the phone said yes and we booked the appointment for a few hours later that day. When I arrived to check in a little before my appointment there was a lady at the front desk and another stylist working with a client. The place is very nice, clean, and has a great ambiance. The lady at the front desk asked if I wanted any kind of refreshment, I declined and she said hesitated at first but then said what I wanted haircut wise should be fine. I had a feeling at that point that there might be an issue, but I was on a time crunch to leave for my brother's wedding the next day which I needed to travel to. So I decided to get the haircut. Staci was the stylist available for the haircut. She was nice, talkative, and welcoming. She did say however that she is being taught how to cut hair by her boss, so she is still learning. I decided that was fine, we all have to learn at some point so went ahead with it. I told her what wanted while she was wrapping me in the gown and neck protector and she began. In my experience barbers typically use a pick on my hair first so that it's puffed out and you get a good idea of what it looks like and how long it is. This is not what she did, she just started cutting. She also, recommended not cutting it as short as I wanted which I said was fine. I was thinking maybe she isn't as comfortable yet since she is learning and I definitely didn't want her outside of her comfort zone while cutting my hair. She also during that time said I had a little bit of dandruff and asked about my shampoo, I told her she said it was a bad shampoo and said she would recommend some products when finished. I would say about 3/4 of the way through the cut, we stopped and went over so she could wash it, then went back to cutting it. Again without picking it out. She finished up applying some product and using a diffuser and that was it for the cutting part. Overall the haircut was fine, not exactly what I was used to but it was good enough. I touched up some parts of it when I got home to smooth it out a bit more and get rid of the strands that were noticeably sticking up in all directions. Usually the part a barber does at the end with scissors. She didn't really line it up the way a barber would except for the sideburns, around the ears, and the back at the neck. Anyway, we walked over to check out and she started recommending products. A shampoo, a conditioner, and an oil. She said they would help clear up the little bit of dandruff, but I needed to use them everyday at the same time like a medication. A bit strange, since I don't know anyone that washes their hair everyday. But I purchased the products anyway figuring she was a professional and maybe that was the reason I couldn't quite clear all of the dandruff up. Well my scalp has been dry and itchy like no other since I started using the products. So much so my wife even commented on how much more dry it's been. We both agree it's gotten worse than it was. So I decided to stop using them, and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Overall the facility is very nice and the people that work there are inviting, but the hair products didn't work for me and the haircut was just fine. I would expect a bit better for the cost of both the products and haircut. read more

Last Friday I went in for a haircut, and for the first time I had Tony. Told him it was an important cut and he said "I'm going to give you the best haircut you've ever had", walked out 45 minutes later with a 10/10 cut. I've been there 6-7 times now and each time, the person cutting my hair has had awesome vibes. Music's always good, they offer you a beer when you sit. A little pricy for a cut but at the end of the day, it's top quality and you get what you pay for. Shout out Tony for last week's cut, will be requesting him next time. read more

I have had bad experiences with barbers. Most of my haircuts my whole life have been bad. I was nervous coming here but the friendly folks made me feel welcomed and listened to. I got to explain my fears and my history and explained what I was going for and I learned a lot of helpful knowledge about hair care. The stylist was really friendly and professional, incredibly skilled, and quite pleasant. There was a party sort of vibe in the place, and everyone there always seemed to be in a good mood. I have avoided haircuts for years and didn't know what I was doing but now I feel confident I can come back here and get whatever help I need. They also did a nice beard trim too. As soon as I walk into the shop, I'm greeted by a lovely receptionist .She checked me in and offered me something to drink. She was respectful, attentive, and professional. Ricky took care of my beard. I'd grown it out not too long ago and wasn't sure how I wanted it shaped. Right away, Ricky shared his expert opinion and explained each step of his process. You can't get a better haircut in California than the one Marirose will give you. She's an artist and a wonderful psychologist. You can sit in her chair and tell her everything and she won't judge you...she'll just trim your beard, wax your nose and give you the best damn haircut you'll ever have while giving you an honest opinion from the female perspective. Excellent salon. I don't review much, but I must say the attention to detail from the shop owner Ricky is very noticeable. Place is clean and they take the time to listen to you, the style you want, and open to giving you suggestions and advice if you ask for it. A lot of hair salons lack proper communication. And lack of communication leads to subpar haircuts, or at least haircuts that are good but not your liking. Ricky is really good with this. And seems to be a master of what he does. Justin did a great haircut. So that should be respected. However: -The base price of the short men's haircut, before tip, was $70, which is a bit much. -The haircut took much longer than it needed to, and I found myself saying "I've got to go." And hopping up not fully satisfied at the 1.25hr mark. This is a short simple cut that took 30 mins with my previous cutter. -There was a young guy in the salon with a big camera who took pictures of me getting my haircut even when I asked him not to. Really not cool and really made me uncomfortable. -I showed Justin pictures of the haircut I wanted, on me, with my hair, from two months ago, and it came out differently. Different bangs. Different top. Not my request. -Justin was styling my bangs in a way that looked very different from the picture I had shown him. Still, a fine haircut by a fine person who I wish well, but I was a bit flabbergasted by all the perfect five star reviews this place has. If I'm going to pay $85 for a simple, short haircut, or whatever people tip above the base price, the experience should have been different. read more

I'm giving 5 stars because my barber AJ is very talented kind hearted funny and just a great guy to talk to about anything. There's only one thing that made me nervous and uncomfortable and that was a camera man who works for the barber shop to take videos of people. He didn't make me nervous himself but the camera staring at me the whole time did. I feel like maybe before and after a couple snap would be fine but there was a camera in my face the entire time. What was once a personal experience with my barber felt interrupted. I like to think of my barber as a person I can talk to about my day, my family and even personal issues that he'd give me good advice on. Almost like you would a therapist, personal trainer or even pastor of a church. They're the people we go to bounce back, feel better and even look better. AJ does all that for me but today with the camera I stayed quiet, closed my eyes and just felt nervous. I think the business should pay actors for that and not interrupted personal time before client and barber. It's an intimate and even sacred experience that was and can be ruined.
