I did a lot of research on a few places and decided to settle on getting my Invisalign here for four reasons: (1) Positive reputation, (2) Experience, credentials, and knowledge of the doctor, (3) Consultation - The consultation was a great process...very easy on-boarding and they did not try to shove a contract down your throat.. Office is clean and super high-tech. The entire staff from reception to billing are fast, efficient, and very friendly. and the orthodontist is warm and knows her stuff; and (4) Best price in town. 5 1/2 months later I have perfectly straight teeth. I desperately wanted to trust Dr. Bukholts, but what was supposed to be three visits over 12 weeks turned into seven visits in seven weeks. Five resulted in undesirable movements, four of which caused significant pain and suffering. The most terrifying part was when I asked for a sincere acknowledgment--or even an apology--for these mistakes, she said, "I still don't know what I have to apologize for frankly." She stated that she didn't have to give me my $3,800 back because I had signed a form at the beginning of the treatment but that she really wanted to return my money so if getting my money back was important to me, I should do what's important to her: "remove reviews". As a consumer, as a client, as a patient, I depend heavily on reviews so I was completely caught off guard by the realization that it's possible that experiences like mine can be completely silenced by waivers. Following a second visit that left my teeth worse than ever (see image), my third visit - a 20m emergency appointment to correct the mistake - proved even more disheartening. Not for a single second did Dr. Bukholts acknowledge that the movements were unintended or apologize for the pain she had caused. Her general attitude during that emergency visit was kind, gentle, attentive, however, her outward demeanor did not align with some of her comments, which conveyed the opposite. For eg, when I expressed my concern that my teeth were now moving in the wrong direction, instead of reassuring me that she hadn't intended those movements at all and they were in fact mistakes, she spent time trying to convince me that there had been a slight decrease in the gap between tooth #9 and #10 and THAT indicated progress. Her insistence on this minor improvement felt dismissive given the misalignment of the other teeth and the pain I was experiencing. During that visit, she twice framed the situation as "a work in progress". When I asked about how long it could take to fix the painful shift of tooth #7, which occurred in less than 24 hours after the 2nd visit, she stated "if it moved this way in one day it can move back in one day. It's not really that big of a movement." That explanation, delivered amid my severe pain, left me utterly confused as to what her interpretation of the situation she was. This communication style persisted throughout each visit, leaving me uncertain about whether she was dismissing my experience. It only became clear during our final visit when she labelled my reaction as "hypertrophic" and insisting that "nothing negative was done to you". Then she positioned herself as the victim and accused me of not trusting her, and implying that my genuine distress--expressed in text messages--was harassment. Exacerbating my trauma by claiming she was "suffering too"! She further claimed that because of HIPAA, she couldn't defend herself against my online reviews. She accused me of not giving her the opportunity to move my teeth because of the way I had been responding to the misalignments and pain even though each corrective visit ended in another painful and unintended pull or twist. She stated that she had approached my care in earnest, never deliberately hurting me while I was deliberately hurting her by posting my "highly prejudicial" reviews of my experience. Ultimately, I couldn't tell whether she was blaming me for the painful twists and pulls or dismissing them as minor setbacks that I had overreacted to. Nevertheless, it's deeply disturbing that a professional can look at the attached progression photos, experience the pain and anguish of their patient and, while claiming there's nothing to apologize for, insist that a refund for an incomplete service be contingent on self-censorship and that posting my review is "not fair". So, she will not refund the money and I now have to go to another dentist. To ensure transparency, I am currently preparing a video review that will showcase my text messages, additional images, and a detailed timeline of events. Stay Away!!! This place is highway robbery. My 11 year daughter went in a year and half ago for braces. Dr Bukholts convinced my wife into doing a pallet expander first. For over a year and $4,900 later she tells us the expander didn't work. But she only mentioned this after all the payments were made. During all my daughters many visits she told my wife and daughter everything looks great and we're almost ready for stage 2 ( braces). Stage 2 visit comes only to be told my daughter needs to remove 2 teeth and it might not be 100% perfect. Dr Bukholt waited to tell us this after all the payments were completed with stage 1. This is truly dishonest and a horrible practice. The office reached out after today saying after they process my insurance and my wife insurance they'll only charge roughly $2,800 out of pocket wow the nerve. They never should of pushed the pallet expander to rip us off. Or Dr Bukholt simply isn't a good orthodontist either way. Do your research and stay away!! read more

I previously had a good experience getting Invisalign here. However... I called to ask if I could get additional retainers from my prior Invisalign treatment. It had been a few years, and I have since moved to Connecticut, so I wanted to check over the phone if that would be even be possible before taking a trip into the city on my day off. The receptionist said she "didn't have that information and I would have to come in and see the doctor." I'm like - are you sure you can't just let me know over the phone? So I get there and without even looking at my teeth, am immediately told I would have to pay all over again for a new treatment.... and, "sorry you had to come all the way here for that." Still don't understand why couldn't they just have told me over the phone. I found that to be really inconsiderate. read more

Dr. Buckholz is great during the first appointment. Then you do not get any communication unless a bill is unpaid. Their bedside manner is terrible, they recommended a treatment that was too painful and then brushed off any concerns. We had to start all over again and finally were able to get my child proper treatment. They never followed up and have no idea of the results, they just don't care once they are paid. read more

Doctor called after reading review, apologized and offered refund, which I declined. 3/26 I wanted to provide another update to anyone interested... I have since sought a second opinion from another orthodontist in Manhattan who determined that my open bite would be easily resolved via Invisilign 10, or possibly 5. My quote was HALF the price of this orthodontist and will take half the time. This doctor, by the way, took the time to review my X-rays, and spent nearly 35 minutes just discussing options with me, and patiently answering my questions. I happily signed on the dotted line. Doctor and team are great at making you feel comfortable and supported during your first appointment. Then they stop. Expect 5 minute appointments, poor bedside manner, and medical advice from the office assistant (unless you are willing to schedule a billable session to see the doctor each time you have a small question). They also forget to tell you important info about treatment during the informed consent process (maybe because of such short appointments?). I recommend going to another provider who offers full disclosures and more than a few minutes of their time before you get into a long term commitment with this office. read more

I went to see this doctor because I lost my retainer and wanted to see if another one could be made to keep my teeth from further separating. This doctor was not the doctor who made my initial retainer but said she could make one to keep my teeth in place. After using it for about a year I went to my dentist and he told me my two front teeth were loose! I told him about the retainer and he said without a doubt that was what made my teeth loose and that I'm lucky I didn't lose them all together. I would not recommend going to this doctor, do your research before you pick someone. I was not aware there were any risks with the retainer she made me and in my opinion it seems irresponsible that she didn't foresee or communicate the harm that could be done. read more

HELL HATH NO FURY AS A PATIENT SCORNED!! I went to see Dr. Olga Bukholts on a strong recommendation by a dentist. And I am SO sorry I did. My gripe with her revolves around two issues: 1) This scam artist charges a $100 "consultation fee" when most other orthodontists do it for free. Moreover, it wasn't declared at the time I made the appointment. Only after the "consultation" was over (all of two minutes of peering at my teeth) did the receptionist announce that a payment was due which I duly paid. Only later did I learn that NO other orthodontist charges this "consultation fee"! If this hasn't deterred you, read on. 2) After the initial consultation where we agreed on a payment plan, brace design, etc., this QUACK refused to return my phone call/email when I wanted to set up a follow-up appointment. NO REASON was given - I simply never heard from her again following the first appointment. I will say this - Dr. Bukholts bedside manner was nice, but how does it matter when she refuses to respond to you following the initial paid consultation? You're taking a chance on paying her $100 for the privilege of having her look at your teeth - something that most other orthodontists do for free. I am being altruistic to my fellow human beings and warning you'll off this CON! Next stop - The Haggler at the New York Times (The Better Business Bureau does not entertain complaints involving medical/legal work .. more's the pity). "Perfect Smiles"? I showed up practically in tears after seeing my oldest daughter's x Rays and she has immediately made me feel better by explaining the situation and the steps that need to be taken in a very calm, candid, and professional way. If you are ready to be scammed, then you have found your PERFECT dentist. Her receptionist is rude and patronizing and the dentist sets her prices depending on what she feels like charging that day. I have heard her complain about her current patients to the next patient on many occasions, mostly due to her overcharging with insurance. There's lots of orthodontists in Manhattan, go elsewhere. I went to Perfect Smiles Orthodontics because I was looking for an orthodontic clinic that is willing to continue my orthodontic treatment since I already have braces at that time from a different orthodontist --I moved here in NYC and had to find a different ortho but I don't want to start over with a new treatment. As treatment appointments go by, this doctor shows her true colors, she was not warm and friendly at all. Her bedside manner was very poor. She doesn't care about patient's comfort level at all. The way she operates on your teeth and jaw almost feel uncomfortable as she is not careful at all and do not consider how patient feels. She always seem like in a bad mood. After she's done with doing things she has to do to your teeth, she just ignores you as you leave as if you're invisible. A normal doctor with good manners will probably give some kind words after treatment is over. Even the front desk staff in this clinic, Paula, was never welcoming and rude either in person or on the phone. Every treatment visit, this clinic will never show they appreciate your business. Save yourselves the hassle and pain and please don't go to this clinic. Very traumatizing experience. read more

My niece is visiting us from Chicago and she had some kind of wire failure with her braces. The wire from her braces was somehow poking into her cheek and she was miserable and could not eat. We were worried it could turn possibly turn into an infection. We realized we needed to quickly find an Orthodontist in our neighborhood who could take her on a moment's notice even though she was not a regular patient. We surfed the Internet and found a bunch of orthodontists on the Upper West Side but nobody would take see her because she was not under their care. We called a friend who has a teen with braces and heard she was seeing Dr. Bukholts. We called the office and we were told that the orthodontist was gone for the day (it was after 6pm on a Friday) but the office manage said she would phone her and call us back shortly. A few minutes later we were told to bring my nice to the office and Dr. Bukholts walked in at the same time. We had the problem looked at, fixed and done, all in less than 15 minutes. All of Dr. Bukholts staff was also very sweet and kind and the office is immaculate. I could not be more pleased with the level of service and professionalism, and quality of results. I would highly recommend Dr. Bukholts. She did a wonderful job on my 12-year-old daughter's teeth, which now look amazing. Our experience was entirely positive.
