Perilla has an incredible atmosphere and the food is wonderful. They have an eclectic menu of Korean fusion mixing some traditional dishes and incorporating some western flavors, as demonstrated by the brussel sprouts (a must try!). They also have a limited, though clearly well articulated and thought through, cocktail menu along with great choices of craft beers. The outdoor seating is very well designed. Especially during times where social distancing is critical, they have done a great job of ensuring you are able to have ample distance from other diners. What's more, your drinks are delivered, but otherwise a buzzer is used to indicate when your food is ready, and then the wait staff keeps your food distant until you come to claim your order. As for the food, the kimchi pancakes, chicken wings (especially with Yum Yum sauce!), and brussel sprouts were the highlight. The dumplings were just okay, although I'm a bit of a dumpling snob so it's hard to impress me on that front! The JJ noodles were great, but you definitely get a ton of them, and especially with the concentrated flavor profile of the bean sauce, you could not eat an order on your own. They guided us through the process and made the best suggestions based on our group's size. We ordered several apps and two of the preset combos of meat as well as two orders of shrimp. I cannot comment on the restaurant ambience or service since I ordered food for delivery. I got the stir fried glass noodles and added bulgogi. The food came hot, which was nice and always hoped for when you order delivery. The serving size was enough for me to eat two meals. The sauce had a slight sweetness to it, which was good. The glass noodles were cooked just right, not too soggy. The ratio of vegetables to noodles was good. I was disappointed that I paid more for bulgogi and only got a few pieces. I had to eat it sparingly to make it last across the entire serving. Next time, I will try dumplings and maybe the Korean noodles - I need to eat more items from the menu to give it a 5. I'm reviewing on behalf of of myself and my very traditional korean parents. We shared the seafood traditional pancake and it was pretty good! It had a healthy amount of seafood. I ordered the soy braised wagyu short rib () - this is traditionally made as a cold banchan. It was in the right kind of marinade according to my parents and served hot. I was a fan of the shishito peppers in it - it really gave the marinade depth! I wish it was served with rice and some acidic banchan to help cut the fattiness. My parents ordered seafood tofu soup () and they thought it was too light and not spicy enough. I have a low spicy tolerance and thought it was perfectly spiced but i agreed the broth was light. Though it wasn't 100% traditional, my parents loved the atmosphere. They wished for kimchi or banchan. Service and ambiance are great! My parents told me the hanging lanterns were attached to long sticks back in ancient Korea and used as lanterns. read more

We're in the hunt for new places to try for delivery during the virus and stumbled about Perilla. So glad we did! And when the place opens for customers, we will definitely stop in - especially since we don't live very far from it. We never knew this place existed! We got the Korean Fried Chicken, Sauteed brussels sprouts, and spicy chicken rice bowl. I was in awe that all dishes traveled well and were hot upon arrival! Bonus! The fried chicken was really good - very crispy and I loved the sauces to dip in. Plenty of meat on each piece. The brussel sprouts were also outstanding, and we would get those again and again. Lastly, my husband really enjoyed his rice bowl. And plenty of food for the next day's lunch. We were highly impressed by this restaurant - especially for delivery. YUM - there's not much more you need to know other than Perilla's food is so delicious and incredibly crave-worthy! I ordered delivery and it arrived quickly, correctly, and well-packaged. I ordered their Korean Meal Plate with stir-fried glass noodles (extra cost), pork dumplings, and the fire chicken as the entree. I also ordered a side of honey butter potatoes and a side of roasted broccoli. Everything was fantastic, but I'll start with my favorites. The fire chicken was incredible! I loved the smokey, fiery, complex flavor and the level of heat/spice was perfect for me. I don't eat spicy foods very often so this brought the heat for me, but it wasn't too much by any means. The dumplings/potstickers were also amazing - they weren't as crispy as they would be if I had dined in, but they still had a good level of crispiness. They came with a bit of dipping sauce that spilled a little in transit but no harm done there. I also really liked the honey butter potatoes. They weren't as saucy as I was expecting (they were actually mostly dry and crispy) but they were so good! I couldn't stop eating them even after I was full! I also want to note that the Korean Plate comes with some kimchi and a little salad with vinaigrette and they were both such a nice touch to the meal. The noodles and broccoli were also good, but they weren't AS good as the items listed above. I'd still recommend them if you're interested, but they aren't "must-try" to me. Delicious take out! Every time I've been back in town, the timing never worked out for me to eat here. But now that we're back in the city, I definitely pounced at the chance to get take out from here. We got the feast for 4 for 2 people, and we had enough main dishes for 2 meals and then some. Loved the way everything was packaged, especially the banchan. Everything was delicious. Extremely clean tasting, well-seasoned, comforting, but without being too artificially salty. I loved the kimchi and ponytail radish kimchi - both were very well fermented but again, not overly salty. The fire chicken was good, but still can't compare to dancen's charcoal grilled version unfortunately. The spam fried rice I could have done without. The fried chicken was really great though - "crunchy until tomorrow." Ordering was extremely easy - they have a little Korean market too, although a little overpriced for some of the items. This is the only Korean barbeque place I've been to in Chicago but I've been to multiple in New York, Boston, LA, and Seoul. I chose this place as my friends and I wanted to have Korean bbq and this place stood out due to its Michelin star status. *** DRINKS *** We ordered 3 drinks (Smoke & Spice, An Old Friend, and the Olympic Boulevardier). These were delicious and I really liked all of them. *** FOOD *** I had the Kimchi Silken Tofu Soup, Duroc Pork Belly, Marinated Short Rib, and the Four Star Mushroom. The tofu soup was good but nothing special. We had the Mushrooms first which were a combo of Oyster Mushrooms and Lion's Mane. It came with a dipping sauce (either Spicy or Sweet Soy). We chose the Sweet Soy. The mushrooms tasted fresh but were overall quite bland even with the sauce. The Pork Belly and the Short Rib were both good as well but it's hard to enjoy fatty meats without any additional condiments so we also ordered Banchan, Ssam, dipping sauce, and rice. The quality of the meat was actually pretty good. *** SERVICE *** The servers were all great and pretty attentive. I did have an issue however with the process. I was surprised that the server only started the cooking process but did not complete it. She did mention how long we should have it on the grill but it was mainly up to us to determine when to take the meat off the grill. Additionally, the short rib was quite large and required to be cut but we had to request for meat scissors to cut them ourselves. *** FINAL COMMENT *** Two stars. The grill items were pretty good quality, but given the price point, I was expecting that the food would be cooked for us or have sufficient seasoning. Additionally, I found it odd that there was a charge for the Ssam, dipping sauces, and side dishes as it is usually provided at Korean restaurants. I don't think it would be possible to enjoy fatty pieces of meat without rice or Ssam as it would be too heavy. The interior has a nice atmosphere and the grills had vents around them which provided excellent ventilation. I've gone to a Michelin KBBQ restaurant at a similar price point in NYC and while the meat was close in quality, the restaurant also cooked/served the meat as well as provided side dishes. Incredible food, beautiful ambiance and great service! First of all, I think the patio seating is one of the most beautiful ones I've seen in Chicago. The pictures don't do justice for how it looks in reality. My friend and I are not too familiar with Korean food but our waitress did a great job explaining and recommending dishes. We ordered the following items: - Korean fried chicken wings: there were a total of 6 wings and we got yum yum sauce and buffalo. Perfectly crispy but if you like your wings on the saucier side, I would ask for extra sauce on the side - Sautéed brussels sprouts: these were shaved instead of pieces, so it was good to have on the side with some of the spicier dishes - Fire chicken: by far my favorite dish we got that day. It wasn't too spicy for me but I ate it in between having the shaved brussels sprouts/garlic fried rice so it balanced it out. There is SO much flavor in it and I looooved the cheese on top. - Garlic fried rice: sticky. crispy. garlicy. yum. There was so much on the menu that I wanted to try but I was STUFFED by the end of the meal (and I still kept munching on the crispy parts of the garlic fried rice). I will def be back for the fire chicken and to sample other dishes on the menu. Stopped by here during restaurant week with some friends and to celebrate a birthday. The place is kind of off the beaten path, but totally worth the visit. Their decor inside is nice and updated, it's very modern looking and love their reflection/mirror wall art. Our reservations weren't quite ready when we arrived (and we were running about 5 min late), but the people were paying their bill or finishing up at least. They lead is back to the bar (which in essence is their waiting room). Note: The bill must be closed out there before being seated. It's a nice little area. We didn't have to wait too long before being seated, which was nice. The service was good and the staff was super nice. They definitely get 5 stars for that. We ordered off the restaurant week menu. And also got some soju and beer. Came in for a date night and had an amazing time! The food was stellar - they had such great specials including the scallop crudo and A5 Wagyu chobap. The mushroom risotto was nostalgic yet unlike anything I've had, and the grilled eggplant dish was a great addition to a partially vegetarian dinner. And drinks were delicious too! We had the jeju punch and an old friend, both super refreshing and unique. Finished off the night with the best espresso martini I've had in Chicago...seriously Service was perfect, super attentive but not too invasive, staff were all super welcoming and well informed. Love that I have a decent Korean option close to home. Perilla is a more modernized and approachable Korean restaurant with a trendy and casual atmosphere. Their menu has enough variety and the flavors are strong. Their presentation is nicer and the staff is polite and friendly when compared to the usual kbbq places. Prices are typical and a little pricey. Don't expect to receive a crazy amount of banchan. They only offer about 6 types and you have to ask for rice (which might be an extra charge) and the lettuce wraps. Everything I have tried has been good. And I've only tried their marinated beef options. Their ventilation system works very well and you won't go home smelling like grill smoke. Overall, it's a great addition to the neighborhood and is my go-to place for sit-down Korean food! read more

I love Korean BBQ but hate having to travel to the burbs or waiting at Cho Sun Ok. When San Soo opened this outpost in River West I was so excited because it was so close to home. However it was really inconsistent. In comes Perilla, which is opened by that next generation of Korean-Americans, so there's definitely still a level of authenticity but also an understanding of good service. This is a great place to go to get KBBQ for a first timer. Everything will be explained to you, they'll cook for you if needed, and most importantly you won't smell afterwards. I always get the chadolbaegi (beef brisket) here. It's one of my favorite cuts of meat at KBBQ. They cut it super thin here and it is delightfully fatty so it cooks and crisps up very nicely. Dip it in some sesame oil/salt/pepper, or in my personal favorite sauce, ssamjang, wrap it in its namesake perilla leaf (you may have to specifically ask for lettuce and perilla leaves) and repeat. I also love putting in some rice and the banchan (pickled radishes, etc.) into my wrap for some delicious contrasting flavors and textures. Note that you only get about 5 different banchan, so it's not quite as much as your typical KBBQ, but it's all quality (sometimes I feel like if you get 15 different ones they usually just get it from hmart or something vs. being made in-house). They have some nice apps and side dishes too, some of which are seasonal. The seafood pancake is always good. They have stews like soondubu and soybean stew which are both good as well. They used to have this asparagus dish that was delicious (it had onion purée and fish roe and the combo was amazing), but it is now off the menu. The ahistorical peppers are yummy as well. Most recently they introduced a new honey butter potato side on the menu that super addicting. My favorite side on the menu is their steamed egg. I grew up on Chinese style steamed egg, made in our old rickety rice cooker. Perilla's steamed egg puffs up like a soufflé and it gets bigger with every visit. It's always very busy in weekends, but they take reservations on Opentable and they have a bar area where you can grab a drink and wait. Definitely our go-to KBBQ around here, highly recommended! read more

We came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. We ordered a steam egg, seafood Korean pancake, kimchi stew and two meat dishes (along with some ban chans ). I love their korean seafood pancake and steamed egg. The korean pancake was crispy and not too thin or thick. The steamed egg caught me by surprised. It was delicious. So fluffy and flavorful. The kimchi stew was just ok for me. We were so full by the time we started cooking the meat. The server/manager cooked our food and cut them up for us. Very nice of them to do that. I've been here a couple of times in the past and really liked it, I'm reviewing today for the restaurant week experience since that was my most recent visit. I ordered the Hansik restaurant week menu, which I enjoyed, but I felt that the regular menu offerings (which are not offered during restaurant week) that I had before were better. The best course was the galbi and pork belly, the meat quality is great but the other courses weren't as good. The spicy grilled octopus had not a lot of octopus and instead a lot of potatoes, celery, and golden raisins. I really like the beverage offerings, I had the "an old friend" cocktail which was very good. I've had tea here in the past and really like their tea selection and the teapot/teacup they serve it in. However, we would have liked if there were dessert offerings (besides dessert drinks). Service was good, servers and staff are very nice but I did feel that the meal was pretty rushed - I consider myself a fast eater and was nowhere near done with each course before the next one arrived. There is a 90 minute reservation limit for 4 or fewer people, but they went so quickly that we were done eating in about an hour and felt like we had to eat and drink at a sprint pace to keep up with the courses. I definitely want to come back again and possibly update my review (and based on my memory, I did feel like I had a 5 star experience the other times I've come here), but knocked a star off this time due to feeling rushed and not being super impressed with the restaurant week menu. read more

It was the best restaurant among the restaurants where I had visited for 5 days in Chicago including all Asian and American restaurants when it comes to the foods, service and ambiance. It's beyond ordinary Korean restaurants in US. With the photos, it looks like common Korean bbq but the quality and taste are different. Yes, their meat might be more expensive than other Korean bbq but I like to have good quality meats rather than low quality with low price. Every bite of short rib was tender and delicious, Pork belly was really good too. My 5 years old son who usually doesn't like to beef and pork kept putting beef and pork into his mouth which was amazing! All the side dish and spicy soft tofu soup were also very nice and delicious. We quickly finished first bowl of Tofu soup and ordered second because my son wanted more! He barely ate his meals for last 5 days. So it was so grateful! Moreover, their service was good too. The host show the brightest smile I ever seen from restaurant host. Super welcome and friendly. All of the employees seemed to know what they are supposed to do. It was very quiet and smooth. Great to have this option close to downtown. I was in the mood for KBBQ and I didn't feel like going super far away from work and everyone's hotels and came across Perilla. There were 7 of us, so we ordered two of the large feasts and everyone left very happy. Some people in our party had never had Korean food before, and even I am used to having meat first then other food, so I think we got a little too excited about the dishes served before the BBQ hit the grill, but everything was delicious so no complaints. The beer menu could be improved. I think all of the beers were on the light side when we went. It would be great to have a more well rounded beer selection. I stuck to peach soju, which I was happy with, and my colleagues who ordered mocktails were quite happy with their choices. Solid Kr option that does not require traveling far. Koreans usually stray away from fusion food and stick to the authentic stuff, but this place successfully impressed my korean palate. My boyfriend (also korean) and I walked in and were immediately excited for a nice dinner. The decor mirrors that of a traditional suburban korean bbq restaurant with notes of modern trends- perfect for the vibe! We waited in the bar area, which interestingly was hidden in the back. We had to try the bbq feast just to get a little taste of everything. The brussel sprouts were not the best- I would've liked crispier brussels as opposed to creamy ones. The banchan dishes were perfectly tasty and authentic, and to its true korean form was refilled upon request. The pork dumplings were deliciously fried, and the korean fried chicken was amazingly meaty and tasty. The ranch is a great idea to cater to the "American" crowd. The marinated short rib was a very tiny portion, but delicious nonetheless. The service was excellent, and the concept amazing for the Chicago restaurant scene. It's definitely priced above the average korean restaurant, but that's reflective of the slightly more upscale atmosphere. I would say that the food is an American take on traditional Korean food. That being said we had a good experience here. Many of the dishes listed on the menu were things you would find in a typical Korean restaurant. There is Korean bbq that you can cook on the grill in front of you. We got mushrooms, galbi (short rib), brisket. We also got glass noodles (jap chae) and scallion pancakes. All of it tasted good, everything was flavored well and accessible to a working class West Loop/Fulton Market/River West crowd, but none of the flavors were authentic. As a Korean America who grew up with a Korean mom who cooks all the Korean foods from scratch to utter perfection, I have high standards for Korean restaurants. And I have to admit, Perilla does a pretty good job. Let me be clear, I do not think Perilla is a traditional Korean restaurant. It is just as they claim to be: a Korean-American restaurant. And I think they pioneer this niche cuisine very well. The dishes are just americanized enough to be easily accessible and palatable by people who have never had Korean food. The servers and friendly, informative, and helpful, making sure to explain each dish with as much detail as you need. The restaurant itself is clean and modern with a touch of Korea that completes the Korean-American flair. All the food tasted quite delicious ans authentic (MUCH better than say, some pretend k-bbq restaurants in Chinatown that I will not mention) and the overall experience of dining here made me itch to recommend the restaurant to my friends. Would I bring my Korean grandma here? No, she would be confused. But would I bring friends here to try Korean food for the first time? Pancakes - 8/10 Scallion and Kimchi - Both yum, the texture didn't hit for me. Little too mushy on the inside, I think I just prefer a slimmer cake but the crust on the outside was perfect. The Roasted Broccoli hit so hard. *chef's kiss* 10/10 JAPCHAE (glass noodles) - 9.5/10 My grandma used to make these for me. This was a close second. The flavor was so on point it truly brought me back. I think I'd prefer smaller cut vegetables only because Japchae is so known for its veggie prep. This place is really, really good. Perilla (formerly San Soo Korean Barbecue) is a cute little place on a corner in River North. It's really well-designed and pretty convenient to get to. The service is pretty great here - we dropped in and were eating in record time. The BBQ here is absolutely superb. The bulgogi is tender and well-cooked, the short ribs are ridiculously tender, and the banchan is spot-on. The fried dumplings weren't my favorite, but they were still pretty good. read more

We love love love Korean dramas and are currently deep into one of our new favorites, Hospital Playlist. Inspired by our current obsession, we set out to pick up a Korean themed dinner from Perilla to take home and enjoy while binging this really cute show. We were so excited because Perilla is a 2022 Michellin awarded Bib Gourmand and the menu is packed with many tempting yummies. We decided to order the Bibimbop with added Tofu, the Fried Vegetable Dumplings, the Kimchi Panckes, the Roasted Broccoli, the Honey Butter Potatoes, the Soybean Stew, the Garlic Rice, the Korean Fried Chicken Wings, a Banchan Set, and the Rice Cake Royale which, if we were all characters in our current favorite show, we would call Tteok-bokki. WOW! Everything was amazing! The bibimbop with tofu was really good with its rice, mild chili spice, perfectly cooked vegetables, topped with an egg. Yummy! The fried vegetable dumplings were nicely crispy and had a great flavor. The kimchi pancakes had a delightful tangy taste which was very satisfying. The roasted broccoli combined garlic butter, calabrian chilis and fried shallots with the broccoli and was excellent. The honey butter potatoes were crispy with a mild honey sweetness and were delicious. The soybean stew included zucchini, mushrooms, and tofu in a very flavorful broth. The garlic rice had a mild garlic accent which was nice. The Korean fried chicken wings was the one item that was not quite up to the standard of the other dishes we ordered. The pieces were crispy but the crusty outside had a blander flavor than we would have expected. The rice cake royale was spectacular with nicely marinated rice cakes cooked with a vegetable assortment. This dish was delightful in its sweet-spicy-savory goodness. While eating this dish we imagined we were eating in the cafeteria at the Yulje Medical Center with all our favorite characters from Hospital Platlist. In the show they love Tteok-bokki too! We will definitely come back to Perilla for more delicious choices next time we are in Chicago. read more

I pretty much stare all day at this place from where I work and figured why not? Perilla recently made the 2022 Bib gourmand list and I had to check it out! The Korean Fried Chicken was the star of the show! Drinks were good, try the my old friend, you won't regret it! This place is trendy and was busy when my party of three dined here for dinner. We had to wait about 15 minutes after our reservation time to be seated and service was sloooooow which is cause for concern when they threaten to kick you out after 90 minutes. The first warning sign came when the hostess asked us if we'd like sparking or still? I'll stick with tap, please. Trying to upsell you from the first minute. We ordered a drink that tasted like lemonade and the alcohol barely registered. Pass. The dumplings were OK but I think they sell them at Trader Joe's for $2.99. Pass. The scallion pancake was soaked in oil and tossed in salt. Pass. The honey butter potatoes were adequate. The fire chicken was rubbery and inedible. Pass twice. The wings were adequate. Second attempt at an upsell was when the waiter asked about rice and then mentioned the garlic rice. We'll stick with the white rice, thanks. Oh wait, but the white rice never showed up. The bill came and we paid it as fast as possible because we were ready to escape. Server had other plans and walked around with our credit card for the next ten minutes. Finally, he returned and we were able to skedaddle and not look back. Oh, and Thomas needs to take a trip to the nuEra so he can chill. Wow! This was an incredible experience... I came with my colleagues after a trade show, and wasn't sure what to expect... I looked at the menu and didn't know if it would be accommodating to a vegan/vegetarian like myself and my coworker as well... However I was more than impressed when we came to the restaurant! There were tons and tons of options for both of us, along side the meat eaters. We did the family style dining and had tons of dishes to try and each and every one was splendid. I really enjoyed the rice cakes and vegetables... And also the mushrooms that were cooked just for me... Lions mane and one other mushroom... The potatoes were splendid... Everything was amazing. Beyond this, the atmosphere was wonderful... The ambience was homey and yet rustic and yet modern... And the service was spectacular. I wish I got our servers name, but he was a younger guy with black hair... He was incredible and gave us so much history on the location... And the vision of the owner. He was an incredible server and treated everything with such care and such specialness. It will be a meal I will think about for a long time to come. You'd be doing a huge disservice to yourself if you don't try Perilla. Everything here is absolutely delicious. The melt in your mouth wagyu, bulgogi, fried chicken, garlic rice, galbi, kimchi, jajangmyeon, etc! Best quality of meat I've had anywhere. I went here last night to reunite with some former coworkers that I haven't seen since the pandemic happened. Most of them have never been to a Korean BBQ so I thought this place would be a good place to begin before they dive deep into old Korea Town. We started with drinks and everyone loved theirs. Two of my friends got the Smoke & Spice and I got the mocktail, Han River Sunset (I'm sober FYI). As for food, one of my friends is vegetarian and she got the veggie dumplings. The rest of the carnivores shared the Traditional Korean Fried Chicken. As for entrees, my vegetarian friend got the Brussel Sprouts - loved it. My other carnivore friends got the Beef Fried Rice and Bulgogi + Garlic Rice. So I was the only person that actually ordered something to grill, Short Rib and LA Galbi. I was so excited to show my friends my skills but things went south. I waited and waited for my RAW meat while my friends kept eating their food. Our reservation was at 6:00 pm and our drinks, appetizers, and my friends' food came in a timely fashion but I didn't get my RAW meat til 7:22 pm. At this time, I was hangry and I tried to be as polite as possible to my friends and the staff. What made it worst is that when the manager came with my meat, I thought I was going to get an apology. To my surprise, there was none and he proceeded to put my meat on the grill and tell my table that we had a time limit on our table. I went ahead and turned the grill on high and tried to cook my food as fast as possible and ate as fast as I could and ended up burning my tongue in the process. The food, drinks, and our server, Ian, were great. Management could use A LOT of improvement hence knocking off two stars. Will I go back? Maybe, if someone else made the reservation.
