Okay, when you have TWO unconnected friends with haircuts so good that you stop and ask them who did it and the BOTH NAME THE SAME PLACE... I don't know about you, but done & done - I had to go. Additionally both of these friends are creative professionals, chic, cool, and careful about what they spend money on. When I first went I was unable to get in with either of the named stylists but took a gambit and booked with Jeannie who was GREAT! I've been going to her ever since and never once thought "well maybe I should try Perry or McGrath" b/c I was so happy with Jeanine's work. Fast forward, I just booked an appointment and discovered the Jeannie is now a co-owner! So happy for her, and so not surprised as she does such great work! I was really broke and tries to save $ with a cheaper haircut... And I ended up going to Jeannie to fix it. It wasn't terrible... But it just wasn't "on point" - I didn't feel like me. Yesterday I went to this salon for the first time, what a wonderful experience it was! The place is super clean and beautiful and the girls working there are friendly and caring. My hair was to my shoulder but I was ready for a total change and Tamara took me outside asked me to remove my mask, took a look a my face and she went to work.....let me tell you, she totally transformed my appearance, my short, short hair is exactly what I wanted but beautifully done. She has this scrutinizing attention to detail and desire to understand your vision by asking plenty of questions and not rushing through the process. Although this salon isn't cheap, you will see the difference between the skillset (compared to cheaper salons) when your hair begins to grow out. Tamara! What a queen. I heard about this place from a friend with awesome hair and am so glad I made an appointment. I called and they were able to book me for less than a week later--the receptionist was cool and helpful. She gave me tips on parking that I promptly forgot, but I didn't have too much trouble finding (free!) street parking nearby. My hair was a hot mess after a busy summer of moving, outdoors-y things, and general neglect. I told Tamara I needed a clean up and was shag-curious, to which she confidently shared some ideas about and away we went. She is truly an artist and it was fun to watch her do her work--she consulted with me a few times about certain things, but for the most part I let her do her thing and was super happy with it. Her philosophy is "wash and wear" hair which I'm all about. I left with a fresh haircut that totally fits my lazy girl lifestyle. Added bonus: they do free bang trims! Prices here are standard/on the cheaper end for a nice haircut in LA (mine was $110). The salon itself is clean, simple, and charming. If you're like me you probably saw the one great photo of the girl turned into a brilliant copper redhead on their list of photos, and booked an appointment with the stylist referenced, Vanessa. She was nice, I explained I had an important event the next day and just needed a root touch up for my copper hair- over the phone I was told lower prices than I was given when I took off my coat inside the salon. Fine. Vanessa seemed nice- but one thing that should have caught my eye sooner was when we had a conversation about how I was charged for a "free makeover" at Sephora one-time. Vanessa said "they just take advantage of you because you're young". I laughed it off. She left me in the shampoo bowl for a REALLY long time- kept disappearing. I literally didn't see her again for a REALLY long time- at which point she had another girl finish off her entire job- shampooing, styling, and all. That girl was very nice- but she ripped my hair out as she curled it with a BRUSH under the heat of a blow dryer- it was a very bumpy blow-dry, and the style was not really great- more tangles than when I started- fine. By this point I had spent nearly 3 HOURS in all at the salon- the sun was down, the lights were low- my hair looked a little different than usual, but it seemed alright. Then I got home and saw my hair in REAL light. Vanessa turned my hair ASH GRAY/GREY whatever you want to call it- it was sooooo bad I had a major anxiety attack and actually had to go to the ER! I never wrote a review about it- but I feel like I wish I would have seen more reviews like this one before I spent way over my budget for a hair color that took HIGHLIGHTS and MORE COLOR to fix. You want someone reliable who won't take advantage of you? I could not recommend Rocco Salon in Eagle Rock higher. No BS with receptionists- he is straight up, he is the receptionist, cashier, color and cut. He has the best energy and he TOOK ME IN AND FIXED MY ASHY GRAY ANXIETY for a surprisingly affordable rate with such understanding and empathy to me having somewhere important to be and not a lot of money left to spend on hair. He literally got me in within 24 hours of this awful mess and fixed WHAT HE COULD of my extremely brownish/mousy gray hair...it was not at all a good experience. I was nice to her, I tipped her, but I felt so taken advantage of. She really just left me there and never came back...must have thought I was young and didn't have money worth losing. read more

Stylists and colorists at this salon are AWESOME. Vanessa truly works magic. I have been seeing her for a few years to work on my red hair, since the grays started appearing (started in my late 20s, actually; genetics, yay). I'm a natural red, and that's super hard to match. Vanessa matched it perfectly! I wanted to try different shades of red through the years, and she worked with me through different shades with such patience and touched up my roots perfectly every time. A few years ago on a whim, I decided to go a darker brown just to see. Vanessa, again, did such an amazing job! It looked so natural, and the color was beautiful. I stayed with that for a little over a year and then decided I wanted to go back through strawberry red to blonde. I'm sure I put her through hell with all of these changes, especially because I have long hair, but she was always so caring about it. I loved being brunette, I just wanted to get back to my natural palette while my grays came in with a vengeance. So with several sessions of lightening and highlights, I'm pretty much there. It looks fantastic and natural. I'm a teacher, and students are not afraid to tell you straight up how you look. All of my students this year thought I was a natural blonde! A friend of a friend cut my hair, and it looked like a total disaster. Ektarina listened to my needs/vision carefully and totally fixed the hair disaster and then some. This new salon is amazing! I had been going to Tamara and Vanessa at Gamine in Silverlake for a while and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they opened their own spot. The new space is beautiful and decked out in vintage furniture. Vanessa is a great colorist and she does a great hombre. I've been getting a deep red dye and blonde at the ends and always get compliments on the color. Tamara gives a really great hair cut. I have curly hair and tend to wear it natural and straight. The cut she gives always works well for both and she is a bangs maestro. She also gave me some tips to get rid of my pesky cowlick and now my bangs are always looking good. How much do I love Vanessa McGrath? To the moon and back again. Look, I'm an artist and grad student, so to say my funds are limited is polite. And in the years before I found Vanessa, I would sometimes find myself in the hair color aisle of CVS looking for Lightest Natural Blonde when my bank account reached a negative balance and my highlights looked like I never left Phenix City, AL. But never ever again. Vanessa has transformed my color, so that now when it grows out, it looks natural. No need for an emergency run to the drugstore or pawning camera equipment to get my highlights done. Also, the new space is really wonderful. A great vibe, really lovely and I think Tamara is pretty great as well. One last little thing...I have a great deal of hair and it means spending some time in the chair when I get it done.
