This review is mainly about the pet wash -- Left feeling pretty dissatisfied with the wash station. My primary issue is with the dryer. It's not high velocity, and since I have a Havanese with a double coat I spent forever trying to dry him. I regularly wash my pup, and the dryer here is one of the worst I've used at any self-grooming station. I ended up using 2 tokens to get him dry -- which is about 50 mins of bath time. I always take ~30 mins to wash+dry him. Massive time sink to dry him fully. If you're trying to blow out your dog's fur, you also have to bring the dryer head super close to their skin, which not all dogs are super ok with. I'd rather go back to country pet wash, I'm spending the same amt of money (~$30), for half the time. I did try to address my confusion with the store attendants, but they just apologized and said that that's how the dryers work. read more

Today I went to use the vip pet express service , not only it's expensive, long line, not organize and rude customer service! VIP pet service basically run with no consideration of how it should work and. It does not care about pet are at stressed when waiting in a long line ! There is no line for nail cut because it takes really long time. There is no other line for service for people who do not speak English and hold up the service! So it takes about 40 mins to get a shot! On top of it, it is expensive! The girl is so rude basically telling me that is too bad! I have an old cat who is stressed out ! I've been to quite a few self service pet washes at various Pet Food Expresses. This one is so far my favorite. The baths were super spaced a part from each other and each bathing station had the floor leash accommodation. My dog gets quite heavy to carry, even worse when wet (she's not a climber nor does she jump so stairs are a no-go), so it was super convenient to leave her on the floor to bathe her. The soap here is also suuper sudsy that it took me awhile to rinse her off. I don't think I've seen as much bubbles at other places, but really appreciated the suds here because I could visually see her getting all squeaky clean. Would probably come back again!! read more

I normally get friendly, attentive service at this store. Not today. well, I brought my purchase to the checkout desk, Eric was engrossed in his conversation with two other employees. He never made eye contact with me never said a word to me until I asked for a receipt. Actually, he didn't even say anything... He just handed me the receipt. This is very unlike the customer service that I normally get from this store. if I see Eric in the store again, I will turn around and walk away. He may be a store asset at backroom stocking and inventory, but he's a disaster at point of sale contact. read more

Clean and pleasant looking store. It's small, sadly none to very little options for kitten for food. Went to get specific brand kitten food but don't have any. I did get some freeze dried chicken that's okay with kitten, just it's not specialized kitten food. I looked through meal, treats, canned food, 99.9% don't explicitly mention it's for kitten, and I don't have time to read through the fine prints. Staff are nice pointed out freeze dried food that's okay for kitten for me. He's 3 months old now, I will go back to get adult cat food once it's time, I like the adult cat food options there. otherwise, convenient location for other random things for the kitten for now. read more

A super amazing team. When I lived in the Mountain View area this is where I would always go for my pet needs. Now I live in the Santa Cruz mountains. So when I get to come back I can't help but smile! The staff are always wonderful. Today was awesome. I was a bit rushed and with the current shortage on honest food kitchen (I've got a picky husky) I was worried on what I would find. Guillermo (apologies on spelling- thought you had a y in there but couldn't remember where!) was so kind, helpful and thoughtful. I found some honest kitchen and he shared info on how I can call them and let them know what I'm looking for and they'll help order in the future. After looking at treats for a little while he told me about some of the current deals and shared which ones his dog liked. It felt really great to have someone who loves pets and knows the products. It probably took me longer to write this post than the time I was actually in the store but the experience was worth it. Their select is ample and staff is well trained to assist in selecting the right diet for our Labrador. They taught me how better to read and understand nutritional information so I can make the right choice. My Husband and I just did the Central Valley round trip to pick up two sweet dogs that were basically breeder dumps. I wanted to clean them up a bit, get them harnesses, leashes and sweaters (which they have NEVER had) before I dropped them off to the wonderful rescue that agreed to get them the medical care they needed then find them forever homes. I had been to this Pet Food Express (which is NOT the nearest to my home) for an adoption event. While it was the washing stations thats brought me back, it was the staff, and most especially Liam who will keep me coming back. Liam took the time to walk us through the washing stations, giving us hints and short cuts, assuring us that if we ran out of time he would put more time on the clock no charge. For anyone who has EVER washed their dog at home ... STOP IT ... this place has everything!! After we were fresh and not stinky anymore (well the dogs at least) Liam took the time to walk us through and get us fitted for harnesses and leashes ... again with the tips and short cuts. After that, straight to sweaters, all matching of course!! When we walked into Pet Food Express the dogs were frightened and cowering. They refused treats and their tails between their legs. When we got to the register both of these sweet babies were wagging their tails and begging Liam for more treats!! Liam, and staff, knowing that Mr. and Mrs. were heading to their new life, first stop foster home, loaded the up with treats, food and probiotics "on the house". Knocked off one star for a recent experience. However, recently I went to get a pet wash for my dog. I talked to Bobby on the phone to schedule an appointment. When I was checking out, I was standing at an empty register. He came over to the other register (not mine) and said "I can help the next customer in line." So I went over there to get helped. He then looked at me and proceeded to go back to the register I came from to help the next customer. I'm confused since I was the next customer in line who needed help. Why wouldn't he check out my stuff? Overall, this Pet Food Express was so supportive and great when I got my rescue dog in January. They gave me treat recommendations and a great harness recommendation too. They really helped my skittish rescue open up when she was scared to enter the store. What an amazing store! Good customer service and friendly people are hard to come by now days and it's a breath of fresh air when you are helped from start to finish when shopping. My dog has had horrible stomach issues and digestive problems with her food and come to find out I've been giving her wrong food all along! Chris the store manager helped me find the perfect new food for her! He taught me the benefits of all the foods and why it's way better than what I was giving her and helped narrow it down to find the best fit for her. After a few months of feeding her new food and supplements she is a changed dog and her stomach problems have gone away! This store is so clean and organized and it makes shopping so much easier! Products are well priced and worth the money. There is a huge variety of food, toys, supplements, etc. and you are greeted with smiles and friendly faces right when you walk in. When I go to PFE Palo Alto: at least 3x a month Why I choose this pet store: it's nearby my house, but more importantly, customer service is AMAZING :) Overall impression: The staff here is the warmest, friendliest bunch of people I've met working at a pet store (and I've been to quite a few in the area, including the other Pet Food Express locations nearby), and the selection here is also great. My dog Reeses loves this place, and once, we got there before they opened, and he sat and waited/whimpered at the doors (see photo)! More details: I go here for everything I need for both my dwarf hamster and mini pinscher pup. There's lots of food choices here, and all from trusted brands (trust me, I've done my research and asked many vets), and tons and tons of treat options. Things I appreciate most about this location include: - Knowledgeable, friendly staff: They know my pup by name and are always happy to see him! Additionally, they've given me great recommendations - from wipes to use for his tear stains to treats that are easily digestible and won't be chewed up too quickly - and it never feels like they're up-selling me. In fact, they've often given me the more expensive items at a discounted price whenever there's a "Buy xxx, Get xxx free" type of discount! - Wide selection of food/treats: I usually try to stick to the same kind of treats and always buy the same kind of food for my pets, but whenever I wanna get them a special treat, I know there will always be something equally healthy and novel (for my pets, at least) at this PFE location. - Lots of non-food items: I've also gotten my shampoo, bedding, leash/collar, and poop bags from here. Not only are there lots of brands to choose from, but there are lots of sizes as well, so I'll always find something that fits my budget/needs at that time. - They partner with Doggie Protective Services (DPS) and host adoption fairs once every two weeks! Great partnership, wonderful cause. I love the organized chaos that we find in the store when we're there on the same day as the adoption events. Pro-tip: I've never used it (because my pup is so small we just bathe him in the bathtub), but I know they have self-serve dog showers here! It's the most hilarious thing watching completely content and incredibly muddy dogs being dragged in by their owners to use these things. Came in for a pet adoption event, picked up a wonderful dog and ALLLLLLL the items necessary to keep him happy and healthy. It was a great pet adoption event and we wound up getting 20% off all of our purchases. Coming off a high of getting a dog, you're not thinking 100% clearly of all the potential things you need. Luckily there were plenty of thoughtful people there to help out. They had great suggestions, honest opinions of products and were sort of like my personal shopping assistant. The selection was amazing, and prices really reasonable. I realized when I had my last dog years ago before he passed that pet stores are really the way to go for variety of goods as opposed to some large chain megastores with their lame small selection of goods. I usually don't write reviews but I had to since this is by far one of the best Pet Food Express locations in the Bay Area. I dropped by the shop today to pick up my regular Stella & Chewy's kibble for my dog. Unfortunately, they didn't have the size I wanted so I asked the associates in the front (Guillermo and Ariana) if they would have any larger sizes coming in. Guillermo was super helpful and explained to me that they get shipments in on Wednesdays around lunch time and if I wanted, I could call tomorrow morning and reserve a bag and pick it up then. Rather than wait (my dog was out of food), I asked Guillermo for other recommendations similar to the quality of Stella & Chewy's (I have a diva of a dog) and Guillermo was more than happy to walk me through additional offerings from Nulo and Open Farms. He was very knowledgeable and very thorough in explaining to me not just the different ingredients and nutrient contents found in each kibble, but also how each of the brands processed those ingredients differently for quality. He even took the time to explain to me why he chooses to feed his own dogs Open Farms over other brands and went so far to explain how he connected with the brand's mission statement (and their way of processing their ingredients). That is quality service right there and not in a "sales person" type of way at all. He genuinely cared about what I was going to feed my dog and made sure I understood the ingredients and nutrient content before purchasing. I trusted Guillermo enough and went ahead with my first bag of Open Farms kibble! He even walked me through how to gradually transition between dog foods and offered supplements that may help with it (which again, he didn't have to do but did so because he cared!). After buying the bag, I went ahead and brought my doggo in just to meet Guillermo and Ariana and they were more than happy to shower him with treats - which of course he LOVED. As someone who sees my dog as family, I'm genuinely thankful to have a pet store with employees who care about their pets the same way. Wow.....I am so grateful to have such a wonderful pet store. Unfortunately, my husky and a backyard skunk met early in am and Kaia got not just sprayed but there were yellow stains all over her face and in her ears let alone her body. Of course she ran all through the house before we could catch her and bath her. It was 5 am and then I took her to Pet Food Express to buy the neutralizing "Natures Miracle" and give her a bath. I waited until they opened the doors and they immediately said skunk. They welcomed us in and immediately made us feel welcome. They had the de-skunk treatment and then off to the tub we went. Of course the husky Houdini slipped out of her collar twice and they were so great in helping me get her back to the parlor. Long story short, the people there could not be nicer. Every one of them genuinely cared about Kaia and about me. They carry by far the best selection of good dog food and the staff is very knowledgeable. A big shout out to Maddie who helped save the day. My doggo had severe diarrhea and ended up covered in it. I've always used Pet Food Express's washing facilities in SF then the East Bay when I lived in each. I had just moved to Silicon Valley when my pupper got sick. Thanks to driving first to the wrong location, the only location without washing facilities, when I arrived at the right location there were only 25 minutes to closing but Maddie saved the day and let me quickly hose my large smelly GSD down. Let me preface this by first saying I've been to a ton of different pet stores because of my new COVID puppy Lou and for my family dogs. It was something I didn't look forward to because you couldn't ever find that random homeopathic treatment or anyone that wants to help you let alone someone who even acts like they want to be at their job when you do track someone down. LSS, the game has changed since my mom shared her experience with me at this location. I was skeptical but when I stopped in to get more miracle spot, this nice guy Guillermo said, "Hi, and asked if he could help me find something?" Nope, I was just looking. Walked up and down the aisle, you know, shopping to buy kinda like what you do a Target. Since I was also looking to change Lou's food, I went that way. Guillermo noticed I had moved and asked what kinda dog and food I was shopping for. He found some common ground with his dog being similarly picky which made me open up about the food I might be looking for. He knew his stuff and took his time with me discussed allergies, items that rarely go on sale but were now, and treats. Needless to say, I walked out with a ton of dog food, treats, and more toys. What's important to mention is that I didn't feel upsold to, I felt like I was making an informed decision and it was thanks to Guillermo's patience and knowledge. He liked what he did and it showed. My bf and I are first time dog owners and were immensely appreciative of all the help, treats, and kindness the employees here gave us as we gave our rescue doggo her first shower. Not only did I find my puppy at an adoption they hosted, but they have taught me so many things about how to effectively raise and handle him since then. The staff really understands animals, and they are so compassionate and willing to share their bounty of knowledge. They also have some amazing deals. For example, when you buy 3 cans of wet dog food, you get the 4th one free. Even better than this is that if your dog doesn't like the food, you can come back to the store and exchange the can of food for a different one at no additional cost. I love taking my dog to Pet Food Express for her dog bath in the self service area. The place is always clean and doesn't stink like dog when you walk in. Store personnel is alway friendly, knowledgable, helpful and always offer Mamba a doggie treat $15 for dog bath. Pop in your token and its rinse, wash, condition, flea/anti itch application, good & smelly stuff, rinse, towel dry, air dryer, boom--done in 30 minutes. We usually shop around after Mamba's dog bath so she can sniff around before we leave. I've been to several other Pet Food Express stores in the bay area and I like the Palo Alto store the best. read more

We recently adopted a rescue (kudos to DPS for a wonderful job matching us up with the cutest puppy ever!) and from all the excitement, we simply didn't have our heads in the right place -- we didn't even have a "list". TBH we didn't think we'd be fortunate enough to be selected to be new puppy parents so quickly. Lucky for us we had Moses from PFE to save the day! Moses was kind and professional, taking us aisle by aisle throughout the store, giving us advice on what we needed to make the perfect home for our new pup. PFE is well stocked with a variety of products to pick from at reasonable prices, even Koa (our new pup) didn't want to leave!
